Reviews for Freeport Marina
Expensive for what it is, 2016-11-28
Captain: , Alameda (667)

This is the only real option for a marina on Daufuskie Island. The depths on the inside of the outer dock was 14'+. Exposed to wakes from the ICW and no rubber rails on the wood docks. Current and wind can make it tricky to maneuver here.

The phone for the marina was out of service when we arrived, and there was no answer on Ch 16 through several calls. The Daufuskie tour company got me in contact with the general store at the marina through their cell phone.

The marina suffered moderate damage after Matthew. The ramps to the docks were thrown off but are now recovered but not secured with some broken metal. There is no water or power on the docks.

Ashore, the restroom is next to the general store. There are no showers. Did not ask about laundry.

Dockage was $2.00/ft.

People are quite friendly. The restaurant and bar are decent. Daufuskie Island has very nice beaches and a couple of other nice restaurants including Marshside Mama's at the public dock on the other side of the island. You can rent golf carts at the marina but they are expensive. $100 for overnight which is necessary if you want to have it for dinner. The island has one paved road and many dirt roads which are easily walkable, but it would be a very long walk to the beaches, historic area or Marshside Mama's. About 15 minutes in golf cart to the other side.

In November it was quiet but still restaurants can fill up. Marshside Mama's needs reservations.

Overall, Daufuskie Island is a fun stop. Visit the rum distillery here - check hours first. They are open Wed-Sat. But I would anchor out and dinghy to the public docks on the other side of the island unless I specifically needed to bring the boat in.

Great day stop, 2016-04-29

Stopped here 4/27/16, had lunch and rented a golf cart. The food was great and reasonably priced. The island is very interesting, well worth the stop. Call ahead and make reservations as there is a tour boat that can be crowded.

Another must stop!, 2015-05-04

Free day dockage to visit the island.

A taste of the islands without going to the Carribean, 2014-07-09
Captain: , Fernandina, FL (428)

A lot more rustic than Hilton Head but fun too. More set up for small boats coming for lunch who dock themselves. Asked for docking instructions and they said dock where ever you like. Sherman did come down to help. Outside new floating dock beyond ferry dock. New docks and pedestals now have 30A and 50A although fresh water faucet didin't work. Only outside shower with little privacy. Bathrooms OK. Fun outside bar. Things settle down once the 5:15 ferry leaves for HH. Nice change from HH. Staff all friendly and helpful. First bag of ice was free.

rustic, but fun, 2014-05-09

new floating docks with another 250' coming. 30 amp and water. Nice outdoor bar and the restaurant is good with reasonable prices. Small general store with the basics. Golf carts are $60 for 3 hours and that is about what it takes to see the island.

Rustic and low key, 2013-09-09
Captain: , Beaufort, SC (70)

Rustic spot to stop. Edgar runs the general store. Once you purchase something, his demeanor and attitdue become much more friendly. Need to call ahead to rent a golf cart as none were available for us. We did have our bikes, but the sandy roads were hard for the kids (age 5 and 6). Would recommend golf cart rental. Try to time your arrival as far from the ferry arrivals as possible. It gets crazy with the influx of tourists and the roads turn dusty.

Rude golf cart man really turned us off, 2013-01-22

Edgar or Ernest in General Store wasn't real helpful when we wanrted a golf cart. No customers in store and he felt like we should have called ahead for cart. Went to bar and another guy came down and said our cart was ready. Once away from Edgar all is great on island. I would suggest you deal with Bloody Point golf course/resort - they want your business.
A real fun place to visit and bar hop via golf cart three bar/restaurants on island.

Rustic stop on the ICW, 2011-01-29
Captain: , Savannah,GA (376)

Has a small store and a fun restaurant. Docks are rough, best to dinghy in if you have a boat over 30'. Can be a fun restaurant at night with live music and locals. You can rent golf carts to explore the island at the store.

Good stop. We dinghied over from the New River Anchorage (10 minutes) to have lunch and a beer. Place was rocking with a live band on Sunday (Fishing Derby). Golf carts for rent, nice little general store, and real friendly folks.

John Hill is manager and will do anything to assist your marina visit. We were able to tour the island with Roger Pinckney, well know author ("Reefer Moon") & resident of Daufuskie. Golf carts are also for rent. Try Deviled Crab in restaurant. Most interesting visit. Read Pat Conroy's "The Water is Wide" before stopping.
