Reviews for Franklin Lock Marina and Park
W. P. Franken Lock and Dam Update, 2017-08-20
Captain: , Apollo Beach (211)

August 20, 2017: The north/ up-rive/ freshwater campground and marina is currently closed including the boat ramp. I spoke with the caretakers at both this and the southern park, which remains open, and are told the Corps of Engineers is doing work to the sewer system and some minor repairs. No work is scheduled for the marina but it is roped off. None of this was confirmed with the Jacksonville Office of the Corps. The basin anchorage is available as are the dolphins but the caretaker asks that captains do not access the facilities. I'm told the repairs have been stalled since June and I have learned that October reservations were canceled however they are taking November reservations. This info was relayed with little conviction that the repairs will be completed and this skipper recommends having a backup even if you can secure a slip. The good news is Charly the caretaker is doing an exceptionally job at sprucing up the place, it's looking better than ever. On a related note with the lack of activity the wildlife is returning to the basin. We saw baby gators, limkins hunting snails, and many other species.

Docks all posted and taped off as CLOSED, 2017-08-03
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2870)

I have yet to find the time what happened, when, and why, but I stopped here after a long day westbound to find the docks all unavailable. I was able to tie bow and stern to the nearby dolphin pilings and had a nice rest overnight.

Great bargain, 2017-06-23
Captain: , Ocean Springs, MS (132)

We stopped at Franklin park for the night to wait for the morning lock opening. Nice docks with power and water, clean restrooms and showers, and a very clean campground. All of this for only $30.00, great bargain and a great place to stop over for the night.

Nice quiet stop, 2017-05-09
Captain: , Sanford, Fl (218)

Spent the night here on 5/7/17 while crossing Florida. Very quiet little campground adjacent to the lock and also very rrerasonable price, $30 with water and electric.

Great place, 2017-03-26
Captain: , Venice, Fl. (949)

We have passed here several times but never stopped. Glad we did this time. Upgraded docks with good electric and water. Deep channel coming in with good depth in the slip. I draw 4.5' so only pulled in 2/3 rds of the way. Very peaceful & quit. Clean restrooms.

Great Layover, 2017-02-09
Captain: , Hampton NH (292)

Made the mistake of calling the 877 reservations line and after a very long wait got a person who was of no help whatsoever. She finally gave me the local number which is 239-694-8770 and noted on the top of the %u201CGeneral%u201D page. The woman (volunteer) who answered was most welcoming and told me all but two docks are first come first served and all but one was empty. We found the docks had been upgraded and in fine shape. Water and electricity and good showers are readily available for the $30 fee ($15 for senior card holders) but nothing else which was fine with us. The location is remote and a five mile drive to a small store I was told.
But the birdwatching was wonderful (the limpkins are especially interesting to watch feed) and it was very quiet except for an occasional screeching bird. The next morning I called the lock attendant from the slip and he set up for me as I left the dock. All and all, a delightful stay and wonder why boaters pass up this nice quiet spot. Rating it four stars for the ambiance.

a hidden gem, 2017-01-25
Captain: , Spruce Head (582)

Linda answered when I called, said reservations not necessary. Easy tie up and plug in. Then walk to the office to use our Senior Pass for a $15 slip fee. We almost always back into slips, but not here. This is definitely a bow first sort of an arrangement because simply too shallow near shore. 6' 6" about mid-dock. There are showers, bathrooms, laundry (take credit cards) and most everything one would want at a Marina with a 14 day limit except a pumpout and Wi-Fi. A wide variety of RVers, which were fun to visit with. Beautiful sunset and a beautiful sunrise. We will be back.

Great Stop, 2017-01-09
Captain: , Mobile (50)

Called earlier in the day and Betty told me she left at 5:00. Called back later when we were running behind and she stayed till 5:30 to get us checked in. Wow. I think the office is typically open from 9-5.

well maintained docks and facilities, 2016-12-12
Captain: , Gulfport Fl usa (342)

grate place to stop off and rest campground and 8 slips $30 a night good deal

great place to stay for a few weeks, 2016-11-12
Captain: , Key West, Florida (120)

Pull in out of the wake of the river and at a dock. 30 a night unless you have the National Park pass. Then its 15. The only place close you can get the pass is at Ding Darling, park on Sanibel. Well worth it. Can stay up to two weeks. Fishing here is killler. Snook and Tarpon come up on the other side of the dam. Nice showers. But a long way from no place.

Little bit of Heaven, 2016-04-23
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1191)

We've stopped here before at the small marina on the east side of the lock and dam. We returned because it is quiet, well maintained, and scenic, just as before. We'll be back.

Surprise location, function, and beauty surrounding this US Park Facilities, 2016-03-03
Captain: , Moyock, NC (1054)

A federal park with a few great docks. Plenty of depth at 6-1/2 feet for our 40' trawler. Two larger 16' wide reserve slips on each outside. The inside slips are for smaller boats, two on each side for a total of six, which sat empty. Excellent power and water, included in the fee. Senior US Park 1/2 discount was great. The boat slips are in the lessor populated RV area. The whole end adjacent to the boat docks has picnic tables, shelter, beautiful grass lawn, and palm trees. The basin is clean with nice homes on the opposite shore. Although there's not much surrounding the park, it is a beautiful place with very nice clean facilities.

Update to prices, 2016-02-29
Captain: , Ft. Walton (10)

Great stop. New/repaired docks. prices up. $30 now. Still 1/2 for golden age. Stay to east of the no wake buoy otherwise lots of water. Lots of rv campers. Snook season opens tomorrow. Public launch so will be more traffic to quite setting. Saw a Lumpkin.

Nice remote spot, 2015-12-20
Captain: , Point Edward (459)

Well-kept facility. Count on other boaters to help with docking as no assistance from park. Laundry takes credit cards or coins. Very clean washrooms and showers. Friendly staff and campers. Nice fishing pier next to dam.

Amazing find! We will return and stay longer! Thanks Army Corp of Eng., 2015-11-21
Captain: , Bay City, MI (730)

There are 8 docks along with the campground. The docks are well maintained and have new tall pedistals. 50 or 30 amp. We reserved online as instructed. When we called 40 foot docks are good for long boats as well, but you have to keep under 40 feet in the form online. We had help at arrival by two nice guys. Campground is really clean and neat. Bathrooms are clean and simple.
Cost is $12 if you have a gold card or $24 for full price. You can stay two weeks. Amazing pricing and amazing place.

Ortona Lock Marina all fixed up and back on line in 2015!, 2015-09-23
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

As of 09/15 marina is back on line!

Cheap good dockage, 30 and 50 electric, water, showers, and laundry. Nice Park setting, overlooking damn. Rv sites also, $12 a nite golden pass for seniors (62)Nothing near by.

Nice Trailerboat Ramp, 2015-06-21
Captain: , Charleston, SC (267)

We like to splash here because it's freshwater and good security for leaving your trailer overnight. If you take a slip instead of a campsite you'll have to sleep on your boat. We've also just styed on the hook in the little harbor off the ramp/docks.

Marina closed but good anchorage , 2015-05-08
Captain: , Knoxville, Tennessee (230)

Stayed here May 3, 2015. Super nice anchorage. Pulled all the way past the boat ramp and had plenty of depth for our 43' trawler which draws 4-1/2'.

Docks still closed, 2015-02-12
Captain: , Cocoa FL (670)

Called ahead and found out that contract for dock repair is still not out so repair work has not yet started. Docks remain closed. Park spokesperson informed us that is was OK to tie to dolphins or anchor, either with a 24 hour limit. We arrived just before sunset and anchored far in between park boat ramps and homes on opposite side. Nice spot, gave "Ave" rating due to dock closure.

Pleasant dock with facilities when moving thru. closed, 2014-11-17
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

The docks have been closed for rebuilding. We tied to the large dophins in the basin and had a stern line around one of the dock finger pier end piling but a "volunteer in the park wearing a straw hat with a corps patch advised us we were treaspassing and to remove the line? Rather then argue I did and dropped a stern anchor. This person has no actual real authority, but in return for collecting camping fees etc, he gets to keep his camper there for free. He can only call in the real authority. Annoying rude and pathetic. This is a good anchorage depth was 10' 11-15-14 Easiest is to place a stern line on a dolphin then drop a bow anchor. These dolphin are 70' apart? well 3g. You now must dinghy to the nearby ramp to dispose of trash or walk the dog.

Docks are closed, 2014-10-31
Captain: , Solomons, MD (232)

Om 10/31/14 the docks are closed off with yellow tape as they are in too poor condition. However we have anchored, plenty of room for several boats and about 9 feet depth beyond the dolphins, a little more closer to the docks,
Totally calm despite norwester outside.

Cheap and friendly, 2014-08-11
Captain: , philadelphia (440)

Like others have said, no dockmaster, but other boaters will usually help out. Reservations can't be made same day and the first and last slip are reserved. But the middle 4 are first come first served, and, if it's full, you can anchor nearby. But stay if you can, it's a tight knit community that's fun to be a part of for a day or a week.

great stop super price, 2014-07-04
Captain: , Port Arthur, Tx (516)

called to get spot from park attendent and was told no space available to accomodate our boat with 24' beam so left my phone number if something opened up. a short wile later they called with slip available. pulled in about 5:00pm after a long day and the park attendent had waited for to help tie us up. there is only 4 slips but we tied up on outside pulled bow up to grass and never touched bottom. 50 amp power and water. no other services but everything great.

Beautiful Spot, 2014-05-17
Captain: , Punta Gorda (66)

Call for a reservation as the marina has only 8 slips and some people park here weeks so space is limited. No dockmaster but park attendant and other cruisers hellped us dock.

Enter between the white buoys as water is reported to be shallow near the point.

Great park in the middle of nowhere, 2014-04-20
Captain: , Carefree Arizona (30)

Stopped at this Army corp of Engineers maintained park on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 on my 44' DeFever. Beautiful spot in the wilds of Florida complete with a variety of wierd birds, squirrels, and I'm sure lots of fish. Could have set the hook but for $12.00 you get a bow in dock with a 40' finger pier, 50 amp service, water and very clean showers. Since it is just above W.P. Frankin lock there's plenty of water and you can stay for 2 weeks.

One of the last great values, 2014-04-11
Captain: , Wanakena, NY (749)

$12 per night for those with a senior national parks pass. Including electric and water.
It is clean, pristine and pleasant.
No restaurants, grocery, etc. About 8 slips and you can reserve online.

Great Bargain, 2014-03-23
Captain: , St. James, NC (253)

A well protected bargain stop. For $12 per night with a senior pass this is a real value. Nice views of the wildlife all around. Restrooms and laundry are clean and well maintained. Slips are narrow.

Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1633)

Stopped here for 1 nighht and was pleasantly surprised. Pulled bow in with plenty oif water and our 47' LOA fit perfectly. There's no one to help, and no nearby shopping, but for $12/' with a senior pass it can't be beat. The anchorage looks great too.

Peaceful Overnight, 2014-03-16
Captain: , Palm Coast, Florida (311)

Corp of Engineers RV campground and boat slips. Clean restroom with shower room. Saw lots of wildlife including manatees swimming under the boat. Within 72 hours shows all slips booked and they can only be reserved by calling the park directly. Before that, slips must be reserved on line or using a toll free number. A real value which includes electricity in the rate.

Beautiful Stop!, 2014-03-07
Captain: , Satellite Beach, Fl. (125)

We have stayed at US Army Corp of Engineers facilities in our RV but this was our first at a marina and we are very happy with the marina and facilities here. Very quiet, peaceful and scenic setting, docks appear new but they are very slippery when wet so be advised. We would definitely return in the future. Sprint WIFI OK, a few over the air digital stations for TV.

Quiet stop, 2014-03-04
Captain: , Pasadena,Maryland (510)

Located just east of Franklin Lock. If you make reservations, they are made through Mostly RV park with eight slips. Showers, bathrooms, picnic pavalions. Great stop.

Great Stop Over, 2014-02-14
Captain: , St Augustine,Fl (182)

We stopped here on Active Captain recommendations. The docks are fixed, about 40' and well maintained. There is water and electricity for the cost of dockage which is $24 or $12 if you have park pass. The restrooms/showers/laundry are clean and the scenery is lovely. There is no nearby facilities or wifi but we liked it so much we stayed a week!

Great, simply great, 2014-01-22
Captain: , Edenton, NC (887)

Great facility, very protected, good power included. Very clean. Slips aren't too wide but if you're wide you can use the outside of the first and last finger pier. Can't get better value. However don't expect help with docking, there is no wifi and there isn't shopping close. But if you're looking for a great place to stay on the passage across Florida this is it. We stayed two days.

Cheap, clean, well protected., 2013-11-28
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, Fl (440)

Only thing to watch here is the depth at the slips - we saw 5 ' when we arrived Nov 2013. No paid dock help but the other boats come out to catch lines. If you have a senior park card it cost $12.00 night including electric.

Super Deal, 2013-05-23
Captain: , N Fort Myers, Florida (516)

This is a great little marina and campground, with 8 slips. Four are researvable. There are clean showers and rest rooms. The place is kept immaculate and the fishing is great. We are here in the off season, but is 3/4 full. The management are great.

good kayak launch, 2013-05-11
Captain: , Punta Gorda, Fl (960)

Easy to park and launch kayak. Nice park.

A favorite stop, 2013-04-28
Captain: , Aquia Harbour, VA (1177)

Mainly an RV/motor home campground with 8 boat slips. Except for slips B-1 and B-8, the remaining spaces are intended for 2 boats each. Although many quides advise that reservations must be made no earlier than 3 days in advance, we called the same day as our arrival at 239-694-8770. No problem. This was our second time there. Space seems to be normally available.

Great Stop, 2013-04-01
Captain: , Westport CT (311)

We stopped here 3/20/13. Great place to stop. Quiet and peacful. The docks are in very good condition and the park is lovely. Friendly staff and nice, clean facilities. At $24 including electric, how can you pass it up. No shopping or restaurants around, but very peaceful.

Great Stop, Friendly, 2013-01-22
Captain: , Southport, NC (120)

This is a great stop for $24 ($12 with sr. pass). Other boaters helped us tie up, friendly people at the park.

Excellent stop, 2013-01-08
Captain: , brewerton ny (303)

Very clean, nice well run marina/campground. Not much around cep some nice folks.

Nothing to do here but that is good sometimes, 2012-12-19
Captain: , Athens, AL (641)

Sweet little spot. They allowed our 44-foot trawler. Really quiet, took advantage of nothing to do and got some PMs done. Can't beat the price. Had a manatee swimming behind the boat.

Great stop at a good price, but not much in the area, 2012-12-07
Captain: , Algonac, MI (1659)

Check-in staff very helpful. Great place to stop along the waterway, but bring eeverything you need. Very peaceful. One shower shared with campers.

Great place to stop on Lake O, 2012-08-18
Captain: , Cape Coral, Fl (838)

You gotta love $12/night with a Golden Pass. Open bay behind the slips with plenty of room to get in the slips. Water and electric + showers in the campground. Nice place to sit out an watch the boats go by and watching the birds and wildlife. We thoroughly enjoyed this stop.

What a Gem, 2012-06-16
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

Can not beat this for serinity. Staff great. Could fit a larger than 40' boat in slips. Bow in since you are close to shore. Sure wish it was possible to walk across the lock though - that would have been fun

Good place to tie up for the night., 2012-04-18
Captain: , Naples, FL (1096)

The price is right ($12 with Eagle pass). There is no current or tide. It is secluded and no shopping or stores nearby. The Park is full of RV's. It is a good place to stop for the night.

Use your National Park Service Golden Eagle Pass!, 2012-02-05
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (250)

What a Deal! With pass it is $12 (includes water and electric.)
8 slips, come in bow first. 40 foot finger piers Slip 1 and 8 are the widest (good for Great Harbours)Call Park Service# 877-444-6777 for reservations-slips book up fast.
Open bay behind the slips could also accommodate several boats overnight.
Marina is before the lock, so a great place to stage for next day locking.

This a a nice place to stay on the way through the Okee waterway, 2012-01-19
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (334)

I have stayed only once, but it was well worth it since the Franklin Lock was cycling at 10AM and 3PM during the drought. I recall the slip fee is only $24.00 which includes electricity and water. Be aware that you must pull in bow first. Your bow will nearly be sitting on sand once you are tied up.

Wonderful quiet & worthwhile stop, 2011-12-21
Captain: , Galena, MD (1856)

Plenty of water and long piers. Easy entry and exit and right next to lock. Relaxing place to hang out and the price is right. Nice area for walking the dog and covered pavillion with picnic tables and charcoal grill available in front of docks.

Marina is open, 2011-12-02
Captain: , Branford, CT (1003)

The marina and campground are very much open. Better phone numbers to call are: 877-444-6777. This seems to be a National Park reservation center. We called 239-694-8770 which I believe is a local number at the park. They will accept boats larger than 40 feet and with beams wider than 15', but only in slips 1 & 8. By calling locally, I was able to make a reservation without the quoted 3 days notice. This would be a 5 star spot if there were nearby on shore facilities. Slip 8 is the first one you come to, 8 is the last.

Approach bow first as it gets shallow toward shore.

Franklin Lock Marina, 2011-05-31
Captain: , Wickford, RI (1637)

Marina out of service in May 2011. Talked to lockmaster in AM on phone and was told to make reservation with National Park Service. Since NPS web site showed that none were reserved we went ahead only to be told on radio that marina was closed. Anchored in basin near docks for a very pleasant night.

great stop (Closed for 30 days after 4/25/11 for lot paving), 2011-04-26
Captain: , baltimore md (644)

A great stop @ $12.00 with Golden age card, $24.00 w/o. There are 8 slips with 1 being the furthest in the cove. Slips 1 & 2 and 7& 8 are the ones used if you reserve. 3-4-5-6 are first come first serve. The very nice camp host can give you updates on availiable slips. The ranger said May 2011 is the clousure for the repairs. Good air card and air tv here.

Franklin Lock Marina, 2011-03-01
Captain: , Morehead City (390)

We spent 2 nights here and really enjoyed it. The price was great even withour the discount. Nice shower and restroom facilities. Beautiful area. We enjoyed meeting both RV'ers and boaters. We saw manatee, birds, gators, all kinds of wildlife. We took a dinghy ride down a creek to a totally different Florida. We were in a wandering waterway with waterlilies, turtles, and gators. The scenery was beautiful with a differnet view around each bend. We traveled about 4 miles down and enjoyed the ride. Would recommend this to anyone in the area.

Great Stop on the Okeechobee Waterway, 2011-02-23
Captain: , Marathon, FL (458)

We were headed East and were going to stop for the night but we enjoyed the peaceful setting so much we stayed two. $12 a night with a Golden Pass with water and 30/50 electric. Can't beat that price.

Excellent Cheap Dockage and Scenic Campground, 2010-11-11
Captain: , Panama City, Florida (521)

Nothing here but well protected, excellent deep water slips in a park like setting. A very peaceful, pleasant place to spend the night or a day or two. Did I mention cheap? Full length docks, power, water, trash, bathrooms, and showers. Lots of birds. Maybe a few alligators too.

Turn north and enter just before the Franklin Lock. Easy approach on a windy day. County water and 50 amp service. $24.00 per night including electric power. Very nice area to stop just before arriving into the Fort Myers Area.

Nice Place, 2009-02-08
Captain: , Jacksonville Florida (125)

On the east side of the dam north. Really nice place and darn cheap $24 or $12 with Golden Access pass. Fixed docks with 30 and 50 amp hookups. I watch guys catching snook from the pier by the dam. No supplies here.
