Reviews for Frankfort Municipal Marina
A free night, 2016-10-02
Captain: , Ft. Collins, CO (285)

We arrived about 5pm and had been told by the marina on the phone that if we got in after they left and departed before they came in the morning, the night was free. The marina will close for the season on 10/6/16 and the fuel dock is closed now for the season. Frankfort is a delightful town with grocery, hardware, movie, and several good restaurants within a 15 minute walk. We will return here next time by.

Great marina close to town, 2016-09-14
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (1642)

8-19-16 Very helpful staff, and clean facility. The marina is subject to water surging into the marina from the Lake Michigan inlet with strong westerly winds. This is a great town to visit with shops and restaurants.

Great marina, great people, great town , 2016-08-30

We thought this marina was just great! Close to everything but most importantly, awesome staff! Helpful and friendly. We really hit it off with Kim and Mark! Great guys! Highly recommend this place!

Great Municipal Marina, 2016-08-17
Captain: , La Pointe WI (201)

We enjoyed our 4 days stay at this marina. The marina manager, Jeff Mallory, and the assistant manager, Mark Held, were very professional and helpful. It is accessible to everything in this nice little town. We tied up right in front of the library which I loved. Nice market about 3 short blocks away and the laundromat was 2 blocks away. Movie theater is right downtown as with Storm Cloud Brewery which serves great pizza. Nice bike riding around town and the beach is terrific as with the stately old houses on Forest & Lelandau Streets. We got a free pumpout when leaving which was great. I highly recommend this marina.

Great place to spend a day or two, 2016-08-15
Captain: , La Crosse, WI (627)

Super helpful and friendly staff. Clean restrooms and showers. Nice bike path to Elberta and the lifesaving station across the bay. Busy down town area. Docks face a city park. I was concerned about noise, but it was dead quiet by 9:30PM.

Friendly, helpful, adequate, 2016-08-06
Captain: , St. Joseph, MI (814)

The docks are a bit old and rickety, but all the other facilities are just fine. Staff are friendly and helpful. Special kudos to Mark. Internet wifi actually works! A first among all the marinas we stayed in this summer. (Well enough that I can post this review and all the reviews of all the marinas where it DIDN'T work!) Nice town. Lots of friendly folks and lots of community events. Grateful for your business.

If docks were upgraded and a laundry installed, I would give it 5 stars. (Laundromat a short hike away, but not open evenings.)

Nice Facility for a Stay, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Mystic, CT (190)

7-31-16 Great stay. Stayed a few days additional due to lake weather and some much needed R&R. Marina staff very friendly, helpful and attentive. Park like setting, clean and upgraded. Marina is just off the downtown main street. Shops, restaurants and a beach just a block or two away. Groceries a five minute walk. Farmers Market on Saturdays. Able to get mail using the Town Hall as an address. Enjoyed our stay.

Great location, 2016-07-22
Captain: , Naples, FL (682)

We stayed here for two nights on 16 & 17 July 2016. This marina is on the waterfront park adjacent to the very quaint but vibrant downtown. The slips are easy in and out right of the waterway. The head and shower facilities are in good shape and kept very clean with controlled entry available only to marina patrons. The wifi is good.
Jeff, the marina manger, is ex-coastguard and runs a friendly and professional team. The fuel price is very competitive for this part of Lake Michigan.

Fantastic stop., 2015-09-02
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

Stayed the night of 8/28/15. Easy walk to downtown (very vibrant with neat shops); library at the end of the dock. We ate on boat, but plenty of restaurants/pubs nearby. Even had a dixieland band playing in the bandstand.

Nice & Economical, 2015-08-23
Captain: , Little River, SC (1967)

Docks are older finger piers and unfortunately we got the one furthest from the restrooms. Nice town for walking. Grocery is about 3 blocks. Nice clean facilities.

great stop after 65 miles from Nortport, 2015-08-16
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

the fuel price is $2.67
dockage $45 for our 36 foot trawler with 30 amp power, have long power cords or borrow one, its more than 50 feet to the pedistal

clean and staff very friendly

Great value and location, 2015-07-23
Captain: , Green Bay, WI (400)

Stayed 4th-7th July 2015. Very helpful dock crew and new manager even grows peppers, tomotatoes etc and gives them to cruisers! Bathrooms and showers closed 11am to noon for cleaning and are immaculate. Stayed at the resort marina next door last year which was also very good but a lot more expensive. Great town and people, very dog friendly including dog beach just north of main beach. One of the shortest Lake Michigan crossing points from Sturgeon Bay Canal WI to MI 46 nm. We'll be back here for sure.

Easy in and out, but not very protected, 2015-07-13
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1120)

Good help from 2 dockhands who met us on arrival. Slips go directly in to a rock embankment--a bit unnerving and a long reach to shore power stations located on the shore (note to management: just because they are called that doesn't mean you have to put them there!) Nice town, pretty beach with tall dune access, and the Betsie bike trail leaves right from the sidewalk in front of your boat. Decent and plentiful bath facilities.

Frankfort is great little town, 2015-06-30
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6484)

2 dock hands helped us in. Town shopping, restaurants one block from Marina. We were in last slip so wi-fi from the library was fine. Clean restrooms, showers.

Update 6/28/2015: Marina improved slightly from 4 years ago. Sllips recently dredged, marina now has their own Wi-Fi & working very well.

Watch out tfor the strong west wind, 2015-03-19
Captain: , Rick61 (30)

Great muni marina. Helpful staff. Great location. We stopped there to get off the big lake when the winds gusted to 30kts for 3 days. As a result, there were 1' waves washing past the docks that bounced us around....a lot. Love the marina.....in light wind.

Careful with west wind, 2014-09-12
Captain: , Galena, MD (1826)

Ducked in here to wait out gale on the big lake. Early winds from the south east did not present a problem, but when the wind turned to the west, north west, the surge in the marina presented a real problem. Winds were 20-30 mph with gusts to 48. The surge at the marina was up to 3 ft. Very uncomfortable. Sailboat a few slips away sustained damage to SS rails and scratches and dings to hull. We deployed every fender and line we had aboard and managed ok. Just be careful if wind has west component that is above normal.
Town is very nice and another brewpub located here. Stormcloud Brewing has been opened about a year. Great venue and wonderful brews. They had 15 of their brew on tap. And again, they support local businesses, farmers for grain, hops and local cheeses and meats. Great stop. Brewery gets 5 stars.

Frankfort Is A Nice Area, 2014-08-29
Captain: , Gregory, MI (60)

Our first time in Frankfort and we enjoyed the marina and the town. Everything you need is here, except for a marine store. If you need a replacement part it's about a mile hike. Plenty of shops and restaurants, a theater and Glen's Market for groceries. The only thing the marina needs is a day area to sit when the weather is bad and a laundromat. The marina is clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Good marina, 2014-08-18
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (1156)

Good marina, close to town. Has everything you need. Would chose this marina over all the others because of the price. This marina has wifi, the expensive marina down the block doesn't.

One of our favorites!, 2014-07-10
Captain: , Montague, MI (140)

We really like Frankfort Marina! The only thing they don't have is laundry facilities but otherwise everything is covered. Docks are nothing too special but nice staff and a great little Michigan town and setting. Also have a local bald eagle that would fly over the lake and catch his dinner about the same time we were eating, looked to nest across the lake. Very fun to watch!

Good marina, 2013-10-16
Captain: , Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH (370)

Would choose this over other local marinas - good access to town, easy access to power and water.

More than we expected, 2013-09-10
Captain: , Castine, ME (59077)

The town has a lot to offer. We thought it would be a small Michigan town with a couple of stores and a pizza place. Instead, there's a nice Main Street with a lot of shops, restaurants, a movie theater, a hardware store, and more.

We ate at Storm Cloud, a microbrewery. It was fantastic.

The docks were a bit high for us and the finger pier is narrow. The configuration with power and water way off the bow on land is the strangest I've ever seen in any marina we've been at. It seems unusually dangerous to drape the power cord over the rocks. We have a 50 foot cord with power off our bow and our cord barely reached the power station. We literally had to move the boat 5' foward so the cord would reach. It is very poorly planned and should be replaced with something much more normal.

The dockhands were all friendly. As typical with these Michigan municipal marinas, don't expect them out of their office though. It's quite odd that there are 3-4 people working here and yet they have to close the office from 12-1 for lunch. And staying completely consistent, not one cleat hitch was tied properly on arrival. For heaven's sake, will someone in Michigan show these dockhands how to properly secure a boat to a cleat? Here are some references:

Captain: , Milwaukee (60)

Typical friendly and helpful Michigan staff, older facility but very clean and well kept, ate at Dinghy's very good!

Great stop, 2013-07-30
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (445)

Agree with prior postings Good fuel price. Found new restaurant Cru Bistro, first class and reasonable. Had to stay 3 nights due to wind. Surge in basin due to west wind component, very uncomfortable as the docks are perpendicular to the wave action. No laundry on site but good laundromat past library about 1/2 mile. Docks are 4 feet above water so don't put out fenders until docked. If stern in still a long way on dock to power.

Convenient, accommodating, pleasant, 2012-12-29
Captain: , Union Hall, VA (60)

One of our regular destinations along NW Michigan's coast. The slips are easily accessed, and generally immune to wave action except in a strong S blow. The restrooms are clean and well maintained, the staff accommodating. Enjoyed the proximity of the library near the E end of the marina.

On one occasion, one of our crew required medical attention, and the care at the Paul Oliver (Munson) Hospital was second to none.

Shopping and good restaurants are also convenient. Quite a bit of fishing boat traffic at times. Nice Lake Michigan beach a few blocks west of the marina.

Basic but nice, 2012-10-14
Captain: , Evanston (50)

To be fair we didn%u2019t use the facility as we had a place to stay on Crystal Lake, but it was a basic place that worked out fine for us. The staff helped us docking as the wind was blowing us off fairly hard, but besides that we didn%u2019t really see them around all that much.

Very good stop for a night or two, 2012-08-30
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1777)

Confirming all the previous reviews. The only problem you might have is getting close enough into the slip so that your 50 amp cord set can reach the power stand. Great staff, clean, all is aok.
Ludington is nice enough but is a "Well-I-walked-up-and-down-the-main-street-and-seen-it-all" kind of place. Dinghy's is a pretty good restaurant. Not a great provisioning port. But this is still a positive review.

Convienent Stop, 2012-07-27
Captain: , Cincinnati (1810)

Older docks but are clean and well maintained and in great shape. Half are fixed and high, 4 or so feet off water, and others are floaters. There are some 50A but also double 30A. We were all the way down on the last dock and still had assistance, in the rain, getting into the slip and tied up. Town is very close by with many shops and restuarants. It is also easy in and out to Lake Mich. but yet a protected harbour.

Nice marina for relaxing, 2012-04-05
Captain: , indiana (331)

Great marina for relaxing and taking in the sights. Great staff and facilities. Close to town.

Frankfort Municipal, 2011-11-26
Captain: , Grand Haven, MI (674)

Dock hands helpful, wife had injured leg and one of dock hands brought a wheel chair from home for us to use. Woke up to a car show in the park in front of the dock and farmers market closer to the public lauch. Sunday local High School Football Team had a fundraiser BBQ dinner under the canopy. Fuel was priced competively and help comming into dock was abundant.

Very cute town with services shops etc., 2011-09-27
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

Docks have high fixed finger piers as the floating dock have been removed for the winter. No dock master on duty must call and then may come down. Bathrooms very nice and clean. The fixed docks only have 30amp 120vlt but separate phases so will make 240 with a smart "Y".

Good stop as you move up or down the Lake, 2011-08-16
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

Long day from Northport, but well worth it. Dockhands very helpful, although slips are narrow. Town is a block away and very nice. Bathrooms/showers are clean. Well protected harbor. Lots of walking and biking trails around Crystal Lake.

Frankfort Municipal Marina, 2011-07-13
Captain: , Lake in The Hills, Illinois (542)

Staff was very friendly and helpful with tying up. Diesel was reasonably priced and pumpout was available at the fuel dock. Dock hands will assist with fuel fill up and will conduct pump out while you wait. The town is a few blocks away with several restaurants and small shops. Restrooms were very clean and well maintained.

Great Town with a German Heritage, 2011-06-28
Captain: , Oriental, NC (1148)

This marina is very resonable in pricing. It's a straight forward entry with very little current. The staff is accomodating and s/by for the tie up. Virtually a one street town within 6 blocks. Slips are narrow.

Frankfort Municipal Marina, 2011-03-09
Captain: , Macataw, MI (435)

An annual stop for more than 20 years. In the center of town with lots of great restaurants. Friday nights all summer are events right in front of you and the Chicago Shakespeare company across the bay behind you. Wi fi at library at end of dock. Stay East for deep draft, West for fishing boats.

Enjoyable stop for all ...., 2011-01-25
Captain: , Chicago IL (133)

Look for the minks (black) in the rocks where you dock - shocked me but was an unusual sight - there is a fountain always running of well water up (north) on the hill from the marina (yes you can taste the minerals in it) and it is ICE COLD! library right in front of slip when we docked there - OK to anchor out but you may have a hard time finding a place to land the dinghy ..... good holding ground right off (south and a little east of) the muni dock - if you get in late, just drop the hook and save a night's mooring fee. Good shopping and beaches .....

Great town to visit, 2010-09-04
Captain: , Memphis TN (977)

The town has a lot of activities sheduled for the boating season. Docks are fine, power good. showers clean. Right down town. Can be rocky in a SW breeze.

Great place to hide from the storms!!, 2010-08-13
Captain: , Tellico Marina (290)

Town close to marina, facilities clean, staff very helpful, great dog walks

Frankfort Marina, 2010-07-28
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

Made up of a row of docks along the lake shore. Nice faciliites well maintained. Cute little town. Strong SE winds make it a little bumpy at the docks.

Close enough to Wisconsin (Door County) for long weekend, 2010-07-12
Captain: , Quarterdeck Marina (117)

Closest crossing point from Door County (Wisconsin) ~ 52 miles. Clean restrooms and showers; eager staff willing to take care of you. Shopping, restaurants and groceries close by. Excellent sand beach with shallow water; Breakwater is great sunset walk. Also, walk north 1 mile along beach and climb the sand Betsie Bay bluff for amazing view (and good workout!) Ride around Crystal Lake by car/bike is also beautiful.

Nice Enough, 2010-07-01
Captain: , Grove, OK (337)

Good, convenient, access to nice downtown. Baths fine. Did not use showers, but looked Ok. Reasonable pricing.

Frankfort provided lots to do for entire family. Boats, Beaches and Bars...sounds like an album name. Paved walking/biking trail from marina many miles inland. Library with internet, even found a car rental for CHEAP, (ask at the gas dock) to explore neighboring Traverse area. My son Ian (12) even gives it "two thumbs up" plenty for kids to do.
