Additional info:

The entrance is well marked, but should be approached with caution with a strong southerly wind, as we are open to the ocean. There is plenty of water and has a very sandy bottom on approach. Stay between Half-Mile rock and the Knubble and mind the tide. It trips through here and can catch you off guard.

The entire channel was re-marked by the Coast Guard in 2001, so the numbers will differ from any of the older charts.

Reviews for F. L. Tripp and Sons, Inc.
Fine Traditional Yard, 2017-09-16
Captain: , Barnegat NJ USA (695)

The Tripp name is a bit legendary in yachting circles, and there's a reason for that. We "stopped" in here after the diesel quit offshore in the summer of 2016, but it's almost impossible to navigate the entrance under sail with a fould tide so ...

Following a short tow into the harbor and up to a mooring, the yard quickly diagnosed the minor issue: the starter realy. We decided to sit a bit and enjoy tghe nearby beaches, the walking, and the good hospitality. Very friendly, capable, and competent, and highly recommended.

June 7, 2017 - Don't miss the Beach & Back Eddy!, 2017-06-09
Captain: , Milford Ct (105)

Stayed one night on a Tripp mooring to enjoy a warm sunny day on Horseneck Beach which was easy to get to from the marina.

Everyone had advised not to miss the excellent food at the Back Eddy and sure enough - the Tripp launch driver suggested they could easily drive us down for dinner.

Cheryl, our bartender, was the best! They have an outside deck to enjoy a view of the river & sunsets.

Tripp is not a fancy frilly marina but offered all around great service from everyone we met. We fueled, pumped out & added water very easily. The showers are hot & they were clean. Washers & Dryers were also available.

Friendly, old school boatyard, 2012-12-09
Captain: , Wickford, RI (386)

Tripp's has been here a long time and the somewhat convoluted ride in is worth it! There is a lot of current that runs through here so be prepared and note the direction of the flow.
They have moorings as well as their docks and the back lot has lots of intestering old project boats.

Excellent Yard, 2012-11-14
Captain: , Pilots Point (466)

Sailed into yard summer 2011 with issues in the ignition circuit. Yard quickly diagnosed problem and as a quick fix, gave me a short length of wire to short out the starter, enabling me to start the engine and be on my way. Left next day only to find engine was overheating. Returned again to Tripp who again diagnosed and fixed problem quickly--clogged raw water thru hull. Was so impressed with mechanic that helped both times that i asked for a quick assessment of boat's mechanical systems. When we were through I knew more about the boat than I had ever learned from my home yard and now knew that we had a whole range of issues that would later need attention. This really was the start of my learning about boat systems and I'm lucky I landed at Tripp.

BTW, if you stay on a Tripp ball in Westport Harbor, be advised that the balls have no tether on the top. The ball lifts up and out of the water and onto your foredeck and the tether is on the bottom of the ball.

Unspoiled harbor, friendly people, 2012-10-13
Captain: , Westport Point, MA (391)

Another reviewer commented on the difficulty getting into this harbor...perhaps that's why it's retained its old New England character for this long. The town of Westport point is unspoiled and the harbor is clean and beautiful.

The Tripps people, and pretty much everyone else, are friendly, helpful, and have a great sense of humor. The store stocks many supplies at prices as good as the big stores. Ice, prompt $1 launch service, and ll the advice you need.

The Back Eddy has superb food, drinks, and atmosphere, and while it isn't "cheap," it is only a short dinghy ride from your mooring. The WYC next door to the marina usually has food coffee, and snacks. The scenery is excellent, the fishing's great, and there are lots of places to dinghy or kayak. Look out for the current when the tide is running.

This place is what every New England harbor would be like if wishes came true.

Wonderful people and Beautiful Harbor, 2012-08-06
Captain: , charleston (80)

Got here mid day Saurday on our way to a Birthday party in Westport. Arrived with no gifts or transportaions. Asked George the launch operator about shopping on the way to shore and he said "I get off in half an hour and I'll take you to my favorite store". He waited patiently whille we purchase gifts and then said he would take us to the party.
Really made for a nice day.
Great stop.

Good full facility, 2011-10-29
Captain: , Biddeford, Me. Saco River (90)

Westport is gorgeous and the river is as clean as any I have seen. Get a license to dig clams and feast on the best you have ever tasted. Free cleanout facility. Launch srevice is free with a gratuity to the launch operator. Some good rest. nearby, but found the best deal to be at the Westport Yacht Club. Excelent seafood and service open to the public 7 days a week lat May to Sept. Horseneck Beach is fantastic if you like to body surf or swim in the waves.
The moorings were $60.00 nightand all private. The tieing up process can be a struggle especially when the current is ripping out.

Very friendly and great service, 2011-03-20
Captain: , Byram, CT (708)

I agree with other reviewers about the area. Beautiful and worth the stop, but the entrance can be treacherous so skip it if there is a large ocean swell or strong southerly wind.

FL Tripp is full service, with all the facilities including laundry. We had an accident in the river and needed fiberglass work, they charged a reasonable hourly rate and the guy was definitely efficient and only charged for the time he was actually working on my boat (none of that coffee break charge stuff).

I've got to say we were teated very nicely at FL Tripp and the work quality was first-rate. They knew we were on vacation and put us ahead of the work queue to enable us to move on in a few days, yet the guy didn't "push" the layup schedule allowing for temperature and cure times so the structural integrity of the repair would not be a question. They even made the dock space no-charge while we were there for repairs (I thought was very nice, as I expected to pay). They also build boats there. If I ever needed major (or minor) repairs in that area and could get my boat there I'd go back again without hesitation.

Out of the way, but worth it, 2011-01-26
Captain: , Barrington RI (536)

Many people pass Westport on their way to Newport, the cape, or the islands, without stopping. Westport is a little out of the way, and the channel looks a little daunting. However, once here, it is worth the detour. This is a nice quiet marina, with lots of services, and two beautiful beaches (ocean or harbor). Friendly and helpful staff. Good dining, or cheap dining, right nearby.

Beautiful River stop, 2010-07-12
Captain: , Plymouth, MA (245)

We stayed at amooring ($42), a long way from the marina, down river about 1/4 mi. The launch service was prompt and professional and they had a good marine store. We visited the beach (too cold to swim) and the excellent restaurant a 10 min walk away. They promised to hold the launch past the 8pm closing for us if necessary (it wasn't). Evening and morning fishing boat wakes were annoying, but not a problem. Great spot for transients.

Very Nice Area, 2010-07-07

Very friendly people and beautiful moorings. Down river moorings are across from "dinghy beach"on the backdside of Horse Neck Beach - one of the prettiest in New England. East and West forks of the Westport River are great for extended dink exploring. "Back Eddy" restaurant is great, relaxed, good food,

Quiet stopove, 2008-07-07

Moorings in beautiful spot, marshlands and birds nearby. 'Town' a brief walk away, few restaurants. Good place to dink around on the river.
