Esperanza theivery and scams, 2015-03-18

Was rammed in a dingy by a guy named Chase that claimed he was the harbormaster. Told us the DNR morring we tied to was damaged and that we could take one of his moorings for $25.00. Contacted the local police regarding the ramming of our dingy by " Harbormaster Chase" and discovered he was a scammer, not the harbormaster, and all DNR bouys are free. We were warned that crime was really bad, thefts and robberies were common place.
If you visit here, do not leave your dingy or vessel unattended or out of sight. and do not let self appointed "harbormaster Chase" scam you into renting one of his moorings. Pick your dingy out of the water when not in use. I would speculate "Harbormaster Chase" is the leader of a theft ring . Before we called the police, we asked several locals about the moorings and nobody knew nothing.......

We ate at "Bananas " restuarant. Food was good, service friendly. This would be a great place for stopping if it were not so high risk.

Great town, watch out for theft, 2011-04-10

Over a period of two days we know first hand of one friend that had a gas can stolen from his dinghy and another that had a dingy and engine stolen from the boat. The dinghy was secured to the boat with a cable and lock. The cable had indications they tried to cut it 6 times and gave up then were able to cut the lock. These guys were persistant and stole the dingy while the occupants slept so it's pretty scary.

I'd give the town six stars and the anchorage 3 since it can be rolly and theres a serious theft problem and the dinghy dock could use some repair. Tradewinds is a great restaurant!
