Reviews for Edgartown Harbormaster
The Best Harbormaster, 2017-08-06
Captain: , Longboat Key, FL (1089)

While they have 84 available moorings, I made reservations via Dockwa back in February for one of the two available slips. I appreciated the advance email the day before our arrival from the Harbormaster detailing the approach, arrival times and amenities. As we came into Edgartown (never been here before) we were given excellent instructions and assitance in docking. She did the same for those boats going to moorings. The harbormaster was so good on the radio that we ended up listening for a couple of hours as we settled in. The dock master could not have been more friendly and a number of times asked if there was anything we needed.

Restroom and shower facitlies are "okay" but since they are used by everyone including those on the moorings, they tend to get a bit skanky as the day progresses.

This is great location, first class town, and the perfect base to see Martha's Vineyard. Only downside was the docks are right at the edge of the no wake zone before the Chappy Ferry so you do get a fair amount of wave action during the day, but it calms down at night.

Great Mooring, Tough to Reserve, 2017-08-02
Captain: , Essex, CT (258)

Wed 8/2/2017. This year the Town contracted reservations with Dockwa. In such a busy harbor a bit off the beaten path, it is unrealistic to have reservations coordinated between staff on site and a computer server in who knows where. Nothing is listed as available for a week, but throughout the day we heard at least 25 boats without reservations accommodated. We got a great morning, in a very high class harbor, and routinely made to feel welcome. Pets are welcome most everywhere in town, an can be walked on the beach by the Chappy ferry landing. Take a dingy ride to Caleb Pond to see an incredible unspoiled area full of Osprey and other wildlife.

Captain: , Westbrook, Ct (30)

Awesome is the only way you can discribe this area. We reserved the mooring back in March and so glad we did. The Harbor Master were ready with our reservation thru Dockwa, so we were guided to our Ball with out a issue. Plus the Oldport Launch were awesome and could show any big city how to get people around. Easy town to get around in and find great food. Just awesome. Mad Martha Ice Cream and Bad Martha Brewery are a must to try....

This is by far the best place to dock in Edgartown, 2016-10-09

Always a pleasure to be here! Harbormaster is wonderful. Scenery is wonderful. Town is great.

Reserved mooring, 2016-08-29
Captain: , Mattapoisett (10)

I had reserved a mooring for my 36' sailboat about a week ahead of time. I arrived in the harbor at 5pm and requested my mooring assignment, which was Yellow 77 - as deep into the harbor as you can get. Along the way I passed dozens of empty white and yellow moorings and when I requested to pick on up i was told they were "all reserved". Reserved. And empty. So they sent me and my boatload of teenage boys to the farthest open mooring in the field.

Edgartown is a great harbor, but i quite don't understand how they make their mooring assignments.

Long time favorite, 2016-08-26
Captain: , Essex (140)

Well managed , beautiful scenery, great restaurants at re a sonable rates. There are fist vote moorings but need to get there in the am. Online reservations a good alternative if late arrival required.

Great mooring some distance from town, 2016-08-24
Captain: , Barrington, RI (31)

Very widely spaced moorings in the channel between E'town and Chappy. Some distance dinghy or launch ride from town. Dinghy dock was very congested and small. E'town is just great, full of shops and restaurants and well dressed people. Lots of white jeans. Happy time.

We love edgartown mooring field and the area. So picturesque and relaxing. The shuttle service is very responsive to get back and forth to town since we didn't have our tender.

Always fantastic, 2016-08-20
Captain: , Falmouth, MA (10)

We never get tired of our frequent visits to Edgartown. The reserved mooring field (yellow moorings) are a bit further from the dinghy docks in town, though they offer quiet, peaceful and beautiful experiences. Edgartown is a very boater friendly town as well. It's by far our favorite spot!

Overnight for the boys, 2016-08-20
Captain: , Marion, MA (10)

Harbormaster's office friendly and helpful with finding a mooring. Oldport Marine launch service was good and worked out well for us.

Morning loops are too small, 2016-08-19
Captain: , Portsmouth, NH (20)

We arrived in Edgartown Harbor and attempted to attach the mooring several times. Unfortuantely the loop was very small. I called Edgartown Harbor Master's office on the radio and asked for assistance and requested that they bring more mooring lines and help me. They sent out a 19-20-something young blond millennial to help. I explained my problem and his comment was. "well no one else has had a problem." When I asked about the extra mooring line he said, "you already have a line." He stood by on his launch and continued to act condesending and unhelpful. I finally got the mooring on (after hurting my fingers and pounding my fist on the loop.) If I could have fired this kid I would have. He and the Edgartown Harbormaster apparentaly don't know that they are in the customer service business. The first impression they give is not friendly or helpful, but rather condesending and an attitude that infers "you are lucky we are even giving you a mooring, so shut up and take whatever "*&$#" we give you.

Great destination, but services are slipping, 2016-08-15
Captain: , Newport (10)

Edgartown Harbor is one of the premier sailing destinations, but we visited twice this summer and there have been issues each time.

We arrived at 5pm on Thursday and we were told that there may be another boat on our assigned mooring. Sure enough there was another boat on the mooring and the captain was in his lounge chair on the bow. He was told via VHF that he needed to vacate the mooring, but after 25 min of waiting he didn't even have his engine started and he was checking his phone. Exasperated, we left and searched out for a blue transient mooring. The harbormaster should have had that boat off the mooring before we arrived at 5pm and should have sent a boat out to the mooring as we waited for the captain to get his butt in gear. In total we had to screw around for close to an hour to get a mooring.

On a previous stay in July we were placed between 2 power boats that ran their generators all night. Not exactly a pleasant experience. When we asked the harbormaster's office about the noise policy we were told that there is a policy of no noise after 10pm, but it doesn't appear to be enforced.

All in all Edgartown is still a great place to visit and the harbormaster's office does a great job dealing with so many boats (Mike Hathaway is awesome), but the incidents above could have been prevented

Edgartown Harbor, 2016-08-14
Captain: , Jamestown, RI (10)

As usual, had a fantastic stay at Edgartown Harbor. Easy access to town, restaurants and showers (which appear to have been renovated). Quiet, flat water which made for a good night sleep. Looking forward to coming back.

Limited dinghy access, 2016-08-14
Captain: , Wickford, RI (587)

This was our second time to Edgartown. We prefer to go ashore by our easily deployable dinghy, however for a very large mooring field there is very limited public dinghy access with a small dock in the center of town. The restaurants in town are just O.K. for the most part and generally expensive. The mooring itself was fine with plenty of room. The town has several groupings of moorings that are a good dinghy ride from the dinghy dock.

However, if you prefer to use the launch service, they are out continuously shuttling guests from the moorings to town.

Best run Harbor I've ever seen, 2016-08-11
Captain: , Marblehead, MA (10)

On this busy August Sunday afternoon the young lady Harbor Master Assistant assigning moorings was as busy as the control tower at Logan and yet she directed every boat to there moorings answered questions and even assisted the pump out boat! Never missing a beat!

Vineyard Fantastic / Bathrooms & Showers Lacking, 2016-08-08
Captain: , Patten Point Yacht Club, Long Branch, NJ (20)

The moorings and launch service were awesome. The Vineyard was incredible. Bathrooms and showers in the harbor were not at the same level which is a shame given how beautiful the Vineyard is.

First Time at Edgartown, 2016-08-08
Captain: , wickford, R.I. (222)

Usually stay at Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven - but mooring was good - lots of room - though the reserved moorings are at a distance from the town landing or a dog walking area. The unreserved first come first served are much more convenient. Water barge for refilling is a nice touch.

Beautiful harbor , 2016-08-07
Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1643)

Been here many times over the past 30 years. The moorings are very clean and very easy to pick up. The launch service is prompt and courteous as usual. The dinghy dock is crowded with many very large "dinghies" on short ties making access very difficult as usual. The only thing that changes are the prices in town, they keep going up as usual. A mediocre meal for two will cost $100plus tip.

Edgartown Harbor, 2016-08-07

Captain: , Stonington, Ct (20)

The Harbormaster and his staff work with Military precision. The mooring lines are clean and well maintained. Current was a bit stronger than I had realized, especially when coming up to the water barge. The harbor could utilize better and more convenient places to leave thrush and recyclables

Great place to visit for boaters. The island has it all. Great bus transportation system. Great restaurants, shops, etc. The harbormaster's office is very accommodating. Moorings are still $40. Take the launch ashore instead of the dink.

Captain: , Hull Yacht Club, Hull, MA (10)

We had a great time we were there for 4 nights and the harbormaster was very accommodating. We even extended our stay an additional night. Found the Dock was process ok. At first we could only get 2 nights but kept checking back in and the other 2 opened up.

Great Harbor , 2016-08-03
Captain: , Newport (41)

We hailed the harbor master and were promptly directed to our mooring (Yellow town moorings) . They are well marked and solid. They are very close to each other, however - so when a storm kicked up at night we were pivoting around the mooring such that we were getting quite close to our neighbors. Harbor launch was prompt and courteous . We will do this again.

Had to forfeit fee, 2016-08-02
Captain: , Jamestown, ri (32)

Had to leave because of weather. Had to forfeit fee for second night, No policy on using the reservation later this season. Will Avoid Edgartown in the future.
Dockwa was responsive to the issue with Harbormaster's Office and refunded us the cost of the the second night. Thanks Mike.

Edgartown Mooring, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Annapolis (20)

Easy entrance to navigate coming into harbor. Very attentive harbormaster hailed over VHF. They pointed us directly to a wonderful mooring just inside the lighthouse right along the main channel with plenty of boat traffic to watch. Easy dinghy ride into town with clean free showers. There is also a very well kept water barge deeper inside the harbor we used on the way out. Very nice town to walk around and huge area to explore with the dinghy. We will return.

too far for launch service, 2016-08-01
Captain: , Annapolis (10)

We only used your mooring one day because it was so far removed fron the launches that we almost didn't make the first race of the weekend due to getting the crew onboard with slow service in the remote mooring area. Thereafter we arranged a private mooring closed to the Edgartown Y.C.. Request a refund for the unused days. Thank you !

Very Boater Friendly, 2016-07-31
Captain: , Hampton NH (292)

It's best to make reservations with the harbormaster's office, especially for busy weekends. They will assign you a yellow mooring ball way down the field. When you come in to the harbor, first look for a blue town mooring which are much closer to town and are first come first served. If one is available, take it and notify the harbormaster's office. If not, you have a backup.
The harbor is very boater friendly but the dinghy dock is always overcrowded. The Dock Street Cafe, a local's place and across the street, is the place to go for a quick breakfast or lunch. The water dock is a nice and easy method of filling up, seems to work well and will take two boats at a time. The showers are near the harbormasters office near the fuel dock. There are three and they are very basic--just a stall, a mirror and a shelf. The shower curtains were in shreds and obviously haven't been replaced in a very long time. Curiously, the electrical receptical in the first stall that didn't work last year still doesn't this year. The showers brought the review down to four stars.

Stop over and visit of friends, 2016-07-30
Captain: , Milford, CT (20)

Brief one night stay on a mooring, walk and dinner in town.
Enjoyed night on the mooring

Beautiful town, needs more fueling options, 2016-07-30
Captain: , Westbrook, CT (40)

This was our first time in Edgartown. The moorings were very good. A terrific launch service. The town was cute yet busy with visitors, many of whom were a bit rude. Biggest drawback was that there is only one fuel dock with one very slow pump. Get behind a large motor yacht and you are out of luck. Note there is a fuel ock in Vineyard Haven which is only a short sail away.

Nice mooring, nice visit, 2016-07-30
Captain: , Occoquan, VA (456)

The mooring was fine...a little difficult to find. A system like Nantucket has where a launch directs you to your mooring would rais your rating to 5 stars...:-)

Great stay - harbor master was expecting us - no issues

Excellent moorings, but reserved field is far from dock., 2016-07-30
Captain: , Fremont, NH (40)

We have visited many times. The mooring field is excellent, but the reserved balls, versus the first come moorings are much further from town. We actually enjoy this as it quieter and more serene. The dinghy dock is very convenient to town, but always crowded. This is our favorite Martha's Vineyard mooring field.

Edgartown Harbor, 2016-07-28
Captain: , East Greenwich (20)

Reservation went smoothly. When extra night was requested it was promptly accommodated. Harbor facilities are convenient and well maintained.

Captain: , Garrison, NY (10)

we had reserved 28 Jun - 1 Jul for a mooring thru DOCWA. The Harbour Master's office was cordial on the VHF radio assigning us #52 in the "yellow" field. A very good launch service ("Old Port Launch" ch 68) picked us up and our dogs (two black female labrador retrievers) promptly each time we called.
On the morning of 30th June we were bringing the dogs back from their morning beach romp in the dinghy and I slipped on the boarding ladder and severed the quadriceps tendons on both legs. The harbour master came steaming to our rescue with four burly health-care workers who whisked me to the hospital.
The Edgartown Harbour moorings had been overbooked for the 4th of July weekend but by some miracle they permitted us to stay due to our emergency. We finally got a delivery skipper to pick up the boat and take her to RI to be chartered for the summer.
Harbour Master Charlie Blair and his assistants Will and Will were patient, cordial, helpful, and forgiving in our plight and went out of their way to accommodate our unexpected challenges.
Of course the harbour itself is beautiful, the town is fascinating, the hospital excellent, and the surroundings as scenic as they can be.

Great Spot, 2016-07-28
Captain: , Port Lavaca, TX (451)

Getting a mooring ball was very simple and quick through Dockwa. Edgartown is, in our opinion, the nicest spot on the island. Will definitely be back.

Great Stop!, 2016-07-28
Captain: , Barrington RI (536)

We entered Edgartown Harbor as part of an ASA sailing class. We did not know that the Edgartown Regatta was in full swing... The harbormaster asked us to hang out for an hour or so, and found us a mooring without a reservation. No problem Mon!

The entire crew enjoyed the (small) showers, and walking the town. We had a great dinner ashore, and returned to our boat by Dinghy.

The next day, Sunday, we intended to leave the mooring by 10:am. Unfortunately an impeller failure as we motored to the pump out dock caused us to have to overstay our reservation to wait for a part to be delivered from the school (non in town?!) We left after 9:pm on Sunday night, and they did not add insult to injury by charging us for an extra day.

Edgartown Harbor, 2016-07-28
Captain: , Bristol, RI (10)

Excellent visit. The Harbor Master was always available for directions to the mooring and a pump out was easy to obtain. Oldport provides launch service to 1:00 AM which is great. This is also a quiet harbor so there is very little motion at night. Definitely going back.

Egartown mooring, 2016-07-28
Captain: , westbrook (30)

Had a nice stay on the mooring. Town was great as was the launch shuttle. Great meal at the Terrace restrauant. Only thing to comment on was when entered harbor and contacted harbor master they told us the mooring number and described where it was but that was it. They never stopped by to say high or
answer any questions or provide any info on things not to do. In this respect Nantucket was better has they showed you to the mooring and stopped by to say high and answer any questions.

A little close quarters, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Marion,MA (10)

We were on yellow #68 mooring and had plenty of room until a 44 foot Beneteau with a 12 foot Zodiac on a 10 foot painter moved from their previous mooring nearby to #63 just astern of us. When swinging the clearance between our two boats was minimal (only a foot or two) which was a little disconcerting during the wind and electrical storm which occurred on Saturday night. There needs to be more attention paid (by the harbormaster) to size and boat placement, and perhaps the positioning of the moorings themselves.

Otherwise we had a great time, and enjoyed our stay. Nice to have the launch service so we can have dinner ashore instead of trekking in and out in our Zodiac.

Bob Hampson, Rochester, MA

Great moorings and service at a great price, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Vero Beach, FL (10)

We have gone there twice in one week. The moorings were ready and in good shape. We had a storm with 40 mph winds and the mooring held just fine. The only negative is that they do not seem to update their availability very often. They showed nothing available one time, but when I arrived once on a last minute deal they had 3 available when I called on the VHF. Good for me but they lost business if anyone looked in Dockwa and assumed the website was correct.

Edgartown Harbor is one of the most picturesque settings in the east coast. And no doubt the Harbormaster staff is the the very best. We love mooring in Edgartown---20 years of wonderful memories!

Great protected harbor. People at the desk would not help us extend a day when seas were very rough, it was not likely incoming would arrive and there were open spaces. Computer reservations (Dockwa) worthless in season and no person to talk.

Everyplace on the Vineyard is nice, but Edgartown is really special -- and
the town moorings are fine. With Oldport handling the launch, there is really is very little to complain about.

Locating the specific mooring was easy using their grid pattern numbering system.
Launch service was readily and cheerfully available.

Easy to plan a return here.

Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, 2016-07-27
Captain: , CT Shoreline (10)

Edgartown is a lovely harbor to stay on a mooring. There is a water barge that makes is easy to wash your boat down on arrival and replenish water supplies. There were many visibly empty moorings each day yet we were constantly told they were all booked and we could not move moorings. The town is busy and fun to walk around in with lots of history and a great bus system to get around the island. Stop and Shop is easy to walk to for groceries. There is a launch service that is nice but expensive to use consistently. The only real challenge to this port is the dinghy dock. It is WAY too small. Even at 7 am you can have trouble finding a spot and often have to climb over other dinghies to get to the dock. There are often dinghies up to 20' long at the dinghy dock which seems ridiculous when it is such a small dock to begin with. The only other challenge is that there is no place to put recycling...only trash which in this day and age seems pretty strange. That being said, there is so much to see in Katama Bay and we loved our visit to Edgartown.

We had an excellent stay. The harbormaster is very accomodating. The only reason we didn't give it 5 stars is the chaos on the dinghy dock. Some boats permanently tied up and one was cleat ed and locked tied side to with three painters. Enforcement of dinghy dock rules and courtesies would make everyone happier. Great stop, though!

Edgartown Harbor Moorings, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Wickford, RI (21)

The last three times we reserved a mooring in Edgartown we ended up on the farthest moorings from the town. One mile away to be exact. This is despite the fact I reserved on the day reservations opened for the year.
I contacted the harbor master all 3 times asking if they could move us if a closer mooring opened up. The reply I received was that they have no control over that. I would have to contact Dockwa.
When we did get to Town, the dinghy dock is so small often time dinghies are three deep. This hasn't changes in all the years I've gone to this port. This year however, I left my dinghy there all day and when I returned in the evening it was trashed from people walking in it all day and someone must have smashed into my outboard because the handle area was cracked and the shut off switch was destroyed.
It appears the Town is more interested in our use of the launch service than they are in providing us FREE access to Town.
The only reason I gave this a 3 star as opposed to a 1 star is that the port is beautiful and a trip to the beaches along Katana Bay is well worth the ride.

Edgartown Town Moorings, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Noank, CT (20)

Dockwa allowed for an easy reservation for Edgartown. This is a very busy harbor and having a solid reservation really puts you mind at ease.

The yellow buoy reservation mooring field is way out in the harbor so either plan to take the launch or be prepared for a wet dinghy ride is there is chop.

There are showers and head facilities at the Harbormaster's Office next to the Chappy Ferry on the fuel dock. There is a small dinghy dock right there to tie up at. The showers are just that: showers. There are three and in fair condition. The heads have toilets and sinks with mirrors for other ablutions.

We came to visit this power island and took a mooring since it didn't appear there was great anchoring options. Turns out there are several options for anchoring. The mooring was easy to reach, the instrucitons from the Harbormaster were accurate and there was adequate swing room. Fairly long dinghy ride to dinghy docks which were very crowded. Did get a pumpout which was free and the harbormaster's office was very helpful.

We stayed here over the 4th of July weekend on the Town Moorings. Showers are locoated at the Harbor Master office. EYC offered us reciprocal launch service, which was really nice. Great area for swimming, fishing, shopping, and eating.

Professional Well-Run Operation, 2014-09-16

I'm in and out of Edgartown all summer long since most of my charter pick-ups are here. I really enjoy interacting with the Harbormaster's team. They are always helpful and professional. Even when boaters are completely unreasonable they maintain their cool and figure out an acceptable solution.

The solid blue mooring balls are first come first served, are located to the East of Greem#9 and may be reserved with a dinghy. Yellow moorings are by reservation and the field is beyond Green#9 Southeast. The dinghy dock is in front of the Boathouse Club to South of Edgartown Yacht Club. Showers available at Gas Dock and travel-lift.

Finally, a harbor run the way it should be, 2014-08-24

Ever wonder why many (most?) harbors / marinas don't let you reserve a mooring? I mean, they actually make more money if they manage it right. And, you as a captain have the security of knowing your mooring will be there when you arrive. Well, Edgartown Harbormaster allows you to do this - and with a convenient Website too. The mooring fee doesn't break the bank (40 bucks) and the moorings are really well maintained.
This harbormater is the ONLY one in all my years of sailing that mails you a paper confirmation of your reservation complete with instructions for contacting them when you arrive, launch information, and even local interests.
If every harbor was run as efficiently as Edgartown cruising would be a lot less stressfull for everybody.
