Reviews for DuSable Harbor
Great Stay!, 2017-09-21
Captain: , Georgetown, SC (100)

We just left DuSable after staying four nights. Great facility and close to everything. Ask about direction to a nearby fantastic grocery store and dog park. Many tour opportunities and I highly recommend a Segway of our highlights. Very strong pump out, open the valve slowly if using the universal fitting to prevent blowback...saw one person get splashed.

Central location, 2017-09-12
Captain: , Britt, Ontario, Canada (101)

Wow! So close to many things. Secure facility. Restaurant, shopping withing walking distance. Did not check the facilities though. Easy to enter and close to the 1st lock.

Handy to the Chigago loop area and Navy Pier, 2016-10-19
Captain: , North East, MD (385)

All Chicago marinas seem to charge the same rate, and this is the closest to the downtown center. Restaurants are as close as a half mile and go on forever. Navy Pier is a mile walk. A self-rental bike rack is near the marina. Each pier has a combination gate, so it should be safe; but dozens of non-boaters have the combination and like to walk out to the end to sightsee. A free self-pumpout station is at the end of E dock. Bathrooms weren't bad.

The Marina is top notch and Bathrooms are always clean! The location to downtown is perfect!!

Loved it here, 2016-09-27
Captain: , Bedford, NH (775)

We arrived on 9/3 for 2 nights. It was Labor Day Weekend. Staff very helpful upon arrival. Had our slip assignment ahead of time so knew right where to go. Called on the radio as we entered the basin and staff was waiting at our slip to help. Location can't be beat. Can walk just about anywhere you need to go. Our slip was the first slip down the ramp, so next to the wall. I loved the activity in the area and music from the restaurant there. Wifi was great. Facilities were somewhat industrial but clean. Didn't have a need for the laundry so not a problem for us that they don't have one. One of my most favorite places to stay. Would rate it 5 if it had laundry.

Staff was terrific, 2016-09-18
Captain: , Cincinnati (10)

Staff was very, very good, spent a lot time with us talking thru many questions we had

Nice marina., 2016-09-16

Very convenient to all needs. Pump out at slip would be nice.

Location is everything.....this marina would not survive without it., 2016-09-14
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (2206)

8-29-16 Location is everything%u2026.this marina would not survive without it. This marina is as close to a do-it-yourself marina as they come. You have to make reservations online, when entering the marina, we could not get them the answer the radio or phone. We docked ourselves with assistance from another boater in windy conditions. When another boater we knew came in an hour later, I helped them into their slip on another pier%u2026no staff in site. I called a week ahead to confirm mailing address to have mail forwarded. My mail did not arrive and my tracking number indicated the address was undeliverable. Other than the marina staff experience, the docks are great, free pump out (do-it-yourself which I have no problem with) and an easy walk to downtown or take a train to see other areas of the

Stay at DuSable Marina, 2016-09-13
Captain: , Cleveland, Ohio (64)

Location to downtown Chicago is amazing. Within walking distance to many tourist attractions including; The Navy Pier, Magnificent Mile, John Hancock Building, Millennium Park, and Columbia Yacht Club. Only 7 minute walk to Mariano's grocery store, an amazing two story grocery store. Rest rooms at the marina are industrial but clean. The boardwalk along the river is beautiful.

Chicago's Best Location!, 2016-09-06
Captain: , Litchfield (10)

Such fun within a few blocks of this marina. Easy walking to parks, shopping, museums and restaurants. It's a great stop!

great location, nice place but no laundry, 2016-09-06
Captain: , Hallowell, Maine (240)

For transients a washing machine is pretty important. The place was fine, the staff very pleasant and helpful nd the view wonderful .Internet pretty spotty, but that is sadly the norm.

Location is the key, 2016-08-28
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2870)

We second the previous captain's review, except that the Wi-Fi was not good at all for most of our stay, but that was on Fri-Sun and perhaps it just got overloaded.

If you plan to be in the city at least 3 days or more and explore the main attractions, check out the CityPass. It saved a lot and gave us VIP entry. The boat architectural tours are also really neat on a nice day.

Great Marina - Downtown Chicago, 2016-08-27
Captain: , Mystic, CT (190)

Marina is downtown Chicago. Large marina with wonderful location to access all the sights and resources of downtown Chicago. Marina adjacent to lock entering Chicago River and about 10 miles north of Calumet River. Marina well protected from weather on Lake Michigan. Security a plus. Groceries within 10 minute walk downtown. Harbor walk adjacent to Marina. Bike rentals at several strategic locations near marina. Restrooms and showers can be a bit of walk depending on dock location, but adequate. Wi-Fi good, laundry nearby in downtown area. Marina staff very helpful. Really enjoyed our stay.

Great location , 2016-08-26
Captain: , Frostproof Fl (260)

Location was great. Restrooms were clean but bare concrete walls a long way from f,g, and h docks. Good security. No laundry is a minus.

Close to Everything, Service Stinks, Do Not Have Packages Sent Here, 2016-08-17
Captain: , GLOUCESTER VA (30)

This is a large marina with a young staff who know virtually nothing and are apparently not interested in learning. I had to make the reservation through Dockwa on line, they would not take it over the phone. Upon arrival, nobody answered my hailing, I finally had to call on the phone. We were promised dock help to tie up, they finally showed up about the time we had gotten tied up by ourselves. I had two packages ordered to be delivered during our stay. UPS did not know where to deliver, but I found out later that by dumb luck he had found the office and three different people looked at my package and shrugged their shouders, they didn't know what to do with it even though it had my name, my boat name, and I had told the office to expect it. The driver finally called me and met me at my dock at 7:45pm with the package, otherwise I would not have gotten it. The Post Office apparently does not know where they are either as they "tried" to deliver a package but reported that the office was closed. It was not closed and in fact I was at the office checking for my package at the exact time they claimed they were trying to deliver. I never got that one. On the plus side the marina is close to the major sites like the Navy Pier, and the Field Museam, and Uber drivers are plentiful in the area.

Great location , 2016-08-11
Captain: , St,marys (10)

The best marina to visit. If you want to enjoy the lake and the city

Good area but bad experience , 2016-08-06
Captain: , Portage, IN (10)

Slip was occupied upon arrival. No answer on the radio, finally answered after 3 phone calls. Extremely loud party 2 slips down until well past 3am made sleeping impossible. H dock is way too close to non-marina area, I'd advise against it.

Overall disappointing.

Not cheap but great location, 2016-07-31
Captain: , Naples, FL (682)

Excellent location right off the Lake inside Monroe Harbor and within walking distance of most of downtown Chicago - Navy Pier, museums, parks, riverwalk, Michigan Ave etc. Also very close to the lock for an early start to beat the tourist boats.
For the high cost however, the facilities are utilitarian to say the least. Heads and showers facility, while secured for exclusive use of marina patrons (and there are many), is very much like a public toilet block in a park that can be hosed out - concrete floor and walls with curtained shower stalls. The main public concourse that provids access to each locked off marina pier is dirty and covered in goose droppings, loose gravel etc. Okay for a lakeside path (which it is with numerous joggers and walkers) but not for an expensive marina concourse.
There is only one cafe in the vicinity next to the marina office and shower facility.

Customer service is awful, 2016-06-10
Captain: , muskegon mi (225)

have been trying to make a reservation for a slip for over a month... called a half dozen times and was told every time someone would call me on ever called me back. i was finally able to get a hold of the harbor master after calling every 5 minutes for two hours, he was kind enough to inform me that the dates i wanted had alreaady been booked solid the week before. when i explained that i had been trying for over a month to make the reservation and asked if there was anyting he could do.. he stated there was nothing he could do and stated i should have called earlier...

Chicago is one of our favorite cities and this was a first to visit it by boat. Since we've been to the museums before, we just enjoyed riding our bikes and walking around. A great place to people watch, eat, sight see. Great biking and walking trail that goes for 18 mi. along the waterfront. Friendly helpful staff. I had made a reservation in May to assure we'd have a spot right in the heart of the city. A highlight on the loop.

Lacking many amenities, 2015-08-11
Captain: , Orange TX (130)

I was very suprised that a marina of this size and price did not have laundry facilities or fuel available even though these items are listed as available. The WI-FI did not reach our location. Other than that, it was as described. Close to many attractions but a cab ride was required for most areas. Visited some blues clubs and Wrigley Field. The train system is nice.

Within walking of most everything, 2015-07-07
Captain: , St Louis (320)

Navy Pier, restaurants, pharmacys, a grocery store, Columbia Yacht Club, Chicago Yacht Club, Grant Park, and downtown are all within walking distance. Nothing fancy about the marnia, but it has what you need; pump out (at end of docks), showers, bathrooms, etc. It is in very good condition and very clean. The staff if very friendly and helpful.
Make sure you get your docks gate code, or you'll find yourself unable to get back to your boat if you leave.

Great stop!, 2014-09-18
Captain: , Penetanguishene, ON (162)

We stayed here for a few days to visit Chicago. It is a very convenient location close to everything. Using the city's online cycling guide we used our bikes to see the attracions. The free Wifi is now up and running great! Speedy and easy to get onto. We were chatting to the guy as he installed it beside our boat today.

Closer to everything, 2014-09-11
Captain: , Grand Haven, MI (684)

While very costly, electrical is an extra charge. The older harbor is close to resturants, Navy Pier, Museums, and the Chicago River.
For someone coming into the city for a first time it's worth the price. We arrived on Sunday 9/08/14 and planned to stay a couple of nights. After hearing of closures occuring down river we only stayed 1 night and the marina refunded for the extra night without a problem. Sunday was a Bears game and a lot of tailgate parties were going on the docks. With smaller docks it almost seemed claustrophic with all the people and boats. Everyone was pleasant and even though the Bears lost most were in good moods.
I did notice that it seemed that some of the staff were more accomodating than others but that is a human resource problem.

Great location!, 2014-09-04
Captain: , Venice, Fl. (949)

Great location near restaurants, shopping, grocery and all attractions. We stayed 6 nights when family came up for Labor Day. Long walk from some docks to restrooms.

Best choice to see the city, but temper your expectations!, 2013-08-06
Captain: , Bloomington, IN (176)

We have stayed at DuSable twice, and would do it again due to their proximity to downtown. The good - If you want to be walking distance to many of the downtown attractions, including Navy Pier, DuSable is your ONLY choice without a taxi. Very nice walking paths to these attractions and Michigan Ave shopping. Security is good. The bad - The bathrooms and showers are minimal facilities and poorly lit. We have stayed here on two different occasions on two different years, and they have had a HORRIBLE smelly mildew problem in the men's showers both times. You would think they would have heard of bleach! Same showerhead that didn't work last year, STILL hasn't been fixed! Internet service was HORRIBLE both visits! I was one dock away from the marina's wireless transmitter and could not get a signal! I could have thrown a pop can and hit the thing from our slip! I was reduced to sitting at a table on the sidewalk directly under the transmitter, squinting at my screen! This has been a known problem for the last two years at least, but staff just shrugged their shoulders in typical big city apathy! No effort has apparently been made to fix the problem over the last year+! All this for twice the price of other Lake Michigan marinas - get used to it, this is Chicago! So, DuSable is your best choice, if you want to see the city, but be prepared for a gritty experience!

Location, location and great docks, 2013-07-02
Captain: , Upper St-Lawrence, QC, CA (38)

We were pre-assigned a dock two weeks in advance; we came in in the middle of the night and didn't call in. All was perfect, we checked in the next morning.
Toilets and showers are minimal; three showers (per gender) for 400 to 500 boats but they were clean at all times.
Security on the docks, several rounds per night.
Fireworks Wednesday and Saturday nights.
We were there to visit Chicago... this is THE place to be. Walking distance to everything you may think about. Better still if you have bikes, fantastic bike paths to your hearts content and bike routes within the city.
This was a fantastic stay in Chicago and DuSable was an important part of it.
The cost of living in Chicago was under 100$ a day for two couples including car parking!

Big dissapointment, 2012-08-29
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (4188)

Good and bad
Good - great location. Floating docks.
Bad: Most expensive marina so far on our Great Loop trip. Made a reservation in advance, but they dont confirm the reservation. Cant send you an email confirmation. We arrive with a reservation and i call them 4 miles out at the Four Mile Crib Light. They should be expecting us. When we get past the breakwater, I call them on the radio. 16, 9, 67. No one answers. Call again. No answer. Call on the phone. Answering machine. Repeat the call several times. Finally someone answers. I tell him I dont like the slip, not enough room, can we grab a T-head instead. OK we can. But no dock hands come out to help us or greet us. They are completely oblivious and gives me the impression they dont care. We arent demanding but for $130/day for a 41 ft boat, we did expect more. Oh yeah, the wack you $20/day for electricity !!!!! There is trash on the docks that looks like its been sitting here for days.
Cant wait to leave Chicago-land.

great view, walkable to alot!, 2011-10-03
Captain: , Key Largo (5457)

walked to Navy pier, and museums, and majic mile. $2 plus a foot in 2000
No laudry, no Wifi, Ships store is a jokie, No locat info, no dock hands, small tight docking, but where elst can you go?
saving grace is the locatioin.

Best for Location, 2011-09-13
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4307)

For the restaurants, sights, and attractions we wanted to visit in Chicago, DuSable is the most convenient location. Great floating docks with locked gates, free pumpout at the end of D dock, and new showers/restrooms.

DuSable just before Labor Day, 2011-09-03
Captain: , Lake City, MN (517)

I agree with most of the positive reviews. Price seems out of line to me. There is no fuel or mechanical service on property and the shower facilities are only fair. However location is fantastic!

DuSable Great, 2011-08-31
Captain: , Fort Myers, FL (101)

Great marina but pricey. Downtown and easy access to everywhere. Wide slips, wide fairways. Dock hands helped tie up; however, took off before could get fully tied up. payng for location here.

Great Location in Chicago, 2011-08-31
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

It is hard to beat this location. But do not expect the same service one receives from smaller marinas we are used to. The onshore restrooms are fine, but nothing special. However, the marina is right in the middle of all that Chicago has to offer, and that is so much. You have to spend many days here to do it all. Chicago is well worth the visit.

DuSable Harbor, 2010-09-17
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

Expense but you are paying for location. Walking distance to downtown, navy pier, museums, etc... Still cheaper than most hotels in the area.

In reference to previous comments, there is free wifi now. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained if a bit on the industrial side. Slips don't appear to be any smaller than normal. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Greatest location in Chicago, 2010-09-04
Captain: , Collierville TN (977)

Walk to Navy Pier, or Mich Ave, or museums. Good taxi pickup. Watch fireworks out front. Great view of city.

Great Location, 2010-06-20
Captain: , Grove, OK (337)

No TV, No wifi, we did have dockhand help, very little information available about Chicago from office, tight docking but nice doks. This is the place to be, though, for great access to Chicago. Walk to Millenium Park, Navy Pier, Cab pickup at Marina entrace is great! Just don't expect a lot of help from staff. Bath facilities not great.

DuSable Harbor, 2007-01-30
Captain: , Spring Lake Michigan (79)

Beautiful docks, close to the magic mile. Easy cab service. No cable TV and lousy showers and restrooms.
