Approach

From the North Channel: After traveling along the north shore of Drummond Island, you will round Chippewa Point southward, entering Potagannissing Bay. The marked channel begins between Bruce Point and Propeller Island, starting with G21 to starboard and R22 to port. Continue on a southward course, following the green and red markers between Bald Island to starboard and Grape Island to port followed by Quarry Island to starboard and La Point Island to port. G11 to starboard, south of Quarry Island, marks a change in course heading westerly toward Rogg Island. Continue west to R8 to port which marks a change in course southward. Staight ahead, you will see the marina, brown buildings with silver metal roofs and a large American flag. At this point, you should see the privately maintained navigation aids (smaller green and red buoys) guiding you into the harbor entrance. Please note at this point, the change from green to port and red to starboard. G1 to port and R2 to starboard begin the fairway to our harbor. The entrance to the harbor is at the east end of the long, wood pier. As you clear the wood pier, stay to the west (right) of the floating dock system with a yellow flag at the end (attached to a large, brown boathouse). The fuel dock, marine travel lift, ship store, and boat ramp are all to the west (right) of that dock system. The floating fuel dock is straight ahead with a red flag at the end with both starboard and port ties available. Call us on channel 16 for further assistance in navigating this approach.

From the west: Heading north, in the DeTour passage, along the west end of Drummond Island, you will find R2 to starboard northwest of Dix Point which is located on the northwest corner of Drummond Island. From R2 to starboard, head west between Bow Island and Surveyors Island finding G1 to port. Continue east, south of Gull Island, to G3 to port. Still on an east course, you will find G5 to port and R6 to starboard, both located north of Wreck Island. G7 to port is south of Howard Island and from there you will see the privately maintained navigation guides (smaller red and green buoys) starting with R1 to your starboard and G1 to port which begin the fairway to the harbor. Heading south, staight ahead, you will see the marina, brown buildings with silver metal roofs and a large American flag. Call on channel 16 for further assistance in navigating this appoach.

Reviews for Drummond Island Yacht Haven
Great place to stay and check into customs, 2016-09-14
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (1652)

8-15-16 This was a great stop returning from Canada to check into customs. We called the marina and they contacted customs to greet us at the fuel dock. Very friendly professional officers. The marina staff was very helpful. The laundry is huge, several washers and dryers and clean restrooms.

good stop over night, 2016-08-19
Captain: , Fort Myers (700)

was planning to clear customs and go anchor, but at $1 ft for loopers including power, and 10cents off fuel, I too thought it good to give some business to this family owned marina. Nice people, good slips. great Wi-Fi. commercial type laundry machines on site with reasonable prices and big enough for sheets and blankets.

Friendly, hepful people, 2016-08-15
Captain: , St. Joseph Island, Ontario (189)

Denny and his staff are very accomodating. Good marine store and customs clearance on site. A great place to spend a day or two.

Came in for customs and stayed, 2016-08-12
Captain: , Portsmouth (432)

Most Loopers seem to come in, clear customs and leave. We stayed wanting to give the marina our business. We found the staff friendly and the marina clean. The Customs agents were professional and courteous. I recommend stay for the night.

New Discounts for Loopers, 2016-07-22
Captain: , N. Myrtle Beach (343)

Effective today, July 22, Loopers have a $1/ft rate and $0.10/gal fuel discount.

Docks are in good shape and the staff is very knowledgable and helpful. Plenty of water for our 5 ft draft boat. Cars are available for rent on site for $12/day. Easy place to check in and the agents come to your boat. Wifi varies with the number of users but is mostly accessible. Cell phone service comes and goes.

If you like Mexican restaurants, make sure you get by Esters in the village. There are also a number of other restaurant options. Heated winter storage is available and the facilites for this are new. An additional storage building is under construction because of the growing popularity of the service.

Beat expectation, 2016-07-18
Captain: , Wilmington,NC (290)

Based on previous reviews, I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. We came here to clear customs to enter the U.S. Did this at the fuel dock, topped off the diesel and had a pump out, all expeditiously. Kaitlyn did a great job helping us with this and handling lines. Ended up staying two nights due to weather. Nice sturdy docks. Clean albeit not fancy showers. Strong wifi. Not much on site, but they will rent a car for $12. A few miles away is a fancy white tablecloth restaurant (Bayview). It didn't do much for me but my wife liked it after many previous meals of pub food and on boat dinners.

Excellent, Friendly Family Marina, 2016-07-15
Captain: , Halifax (30)

Great facility for clearing into the U.S., with very helpful CBP officers onsite. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Newer docks are good. Loner cars for nominal charge to drive to restaurants.

Remote and basic but very friendly, 2016-07-12
Captain: , Naples, FL (682)

We stayed here, after crossing the North Channel from Blind River, to avoid winds and chop that developed after noon and made going onto DeTour Village an uncomfortable prospect. Our SVRS float plan had authorised our entry point as DeTour Village with phone clearance. In the event, we cleared with the CBP officer at Drummond Island (who came to our slip) faster than I could have done by phone.
The marina is showing its age. The head/shower is a long walk through a gravel carpark. The laundry has 10 washers (of which four were broken during our stay) and several huge commercial driers.
The wifi had a strong signal but kept stopping and starting. Marina staff had no answer for this problem except to say we were the only guests who seemed to have a problem. There was no Verizon phone coverage at all and weak AT&T signal.
The few shops and restaurants are two and more miles away and the marina will rent a vehicle for $12 per single trip.
In summary, if you have SVRS pre-clearance and have your customs decal, don't bother stopping at Drummond Island.

Update 12 July 2016. My review initiated a fruitful discussion with the sales manager, Joe DePaul, where I was able to outline in more detail the reasons for my comments. Joe was keen to accept my comments and suggestions on improving the materiel issues I observed and more importantly, on introducing processes to elicit and manage feedback from transients.
Joe advised that a substantial amount has been spent this year on upgrading the marina wifi and additional work was done following my feedback.
Drummond Island marina is conveniently located to offer a safe and welcoming haven after crossing the North Channel. The CBP office on-site makes for an easy entry process to the USA.

Rustic but Friendly, 2015-10-20
Captain: , Rockford, IL (614)

The marina and facilities are little rustic, but US Customs is onsite to add to your convenience. Some distance from town, but loaner cars are available. Their diesel mechanic finally got our engine problem sorted out.

Good Stop to Check In, 2015-08-23
Captain: , Little River, SC (1967)

Nice family run operation. Customs was quick and courteous. Not much to do here and the restrooms are quite a distance from the docks. Doing it again I would just check in here with customs and then stay in Detour Village or anchor out

Family run Marina, 2015-08-17
Captain: , Fort Worth, TX (450)

Be patient as this is a family run business. They truly want your experience to be great. If they take a while to be of assistance quickly it's because they are busy with customers and won't forget about you. Customs on premises and clear you quickly and professionally. Fuel prices were competitive. Friendly staff.

Great stop for customs and a rest, 2015-08-17
Captain: , Portland, Oregon (496)

We purposely arrived here just at the time customs was due to open for business and were quickly processed in with all the paperwork completed by the customs agent. We decided not to go on to Mackinac Island as it would have been pushing it to get there without a reservation so we stayed overnight. We met some great people (both locals and transients) and had docktails to get acquainted There were two young women running the radio and docks and they were very competent and efficient. Many boats arrived throughout the day and they were quickly serviced, berthed, inchecked by customs, and, for those just passing through, sent on their way. We would definitely stop here again.

Great stop, 2015-08-07
Captain: , Solomons Island Md (397)

We never expected our US Customs check in to be so easy. The marina staff was excellent and they actually play air traffic control for the customs agents, letting them know who is next. The facilities are good and the dock hand are fast and helpful. We rented a Ford Excursion for $10 and six of us went to Esthers for Mexican, it was great! The IGA is well stocked with food and booz for provisioning. The pump out is the most powerful rig I have seen to date, very fast.

Postive Review, 2014-12-27
Captain: , Milwaukee WI (657)

I'm surprised at the negative reviews. We have found the staff at Drummond to be extremely helpful. Our first visit, we needed repair of our Autopilot, which they accomplished efficiently in a short period of time. Our second visit, there was a storm on the Bay and we got shelter and accomodations for the night. There was no charge for the rental car to the restaurant. Our third visit was because we had Garmin ship a part to us, held at the marina for several days until we got there from the Soo.

In all cases the staff (and the customs agents) were courteous and welcoming. While the docks may be older vintage than the Michigan DNR marinas, they are substantial and well kept. I have heard favorable reports from people who store their boats or have repairs done there.

Perfect Stop Heading Into & Back From The North Channel, 2014-09-09
Captain: , Los Angeles (10)

It is a great marine. You can tell it is family run and they provide great service. It was blowing pretty hard for a couple of days and they took care of us here. Set us up with golf, dinner and even rented us a 1980's Mercedes Benz for $18 for the day, so much fun!

Customs check in, 2014-08-30
Captain: , Grand Haven, Michigan (200)

We came in here just to check into customs, woman working in the morning was very sweet, she gave us the wifi password and showed us where the restrooms were & coffee shop while we waited for customs officer to arrive (10am) He was also a pleasant man. We moved on after checking in

DIYH Response to Past Reviews, 2014-08-27
Captain: , Drummond Island (66)

Hi Bob and others,

We at the Drummond Island Yacht Haven appreciate your feedback regarding our facilities. Due to the way ActiveCaptain's site is set up, this is the only way I can give a public response and it requires that I give a rating. My intention is not to skew the rating system.

We have taken your advice and are now bringing boats in need of U.S. Customs inside our harbor to our fuel dock or other floating docks for customs clearance. Sometimes, we are too full to accommodate this, but we will try to do our best in getting the boats inside to our newer docks.

We understand that it may seem more reasonable to have U.S. Customs in DeTour, MI., but there are several reasons why they are located on Drummond Island. First, there is an airport which requires the Customs agents coverage. Second, there is a stone quarry which international freighters enter and need customs clearance. Lastly, in the winter there is an international %u201CIce Bridge%u201D which snowmobiles use for travel between the US and Canada. We provide, at no charge, an office for the Customs officers year around.

Please understand that we are a privately owned and family run facility that has been around since 1945. We are not State funded, nor do we get any help from the government, and we pay a lot of taxes. It is hard (though we do try) for us to compete with the six million dollar plus renovation the DeTour State Harbor received from the tax payers last year. Drummond Island Yacht Haven also offers a full service marina. We have a team of certified mechanics, a 75 ton travel lift, indoor heated storage, towing service, ship store, recreational water sport rentals, swimming beach and play set, lodging and many other services that most State harbors do not offer. Drummond Island, as a destination, has two golf courses, recreational opportunities and rentals and over ten restaurant options. Though most are not within walking distance, we offer rental cars for $12-$18 dollars. Our service rates are competitive and our fuel prices and dockage rates are below those at DeTour State Harbor.

We are Commander level sponsors of the American Great Loop Cruisers Association, which means we donate a lot of money to the support of the %u201CLoopers%u201D website and events. I do not believe DeTour State Harbor donates anything.

Please consider our situation before recommending all boats continue past our facility. You are attempting to drive business away from us (and our local and State economy which help pay for the State harbors) with a very narrow view of our facility from our outer Customs dock.

The U. S. Coast Guard buoyed the channel between DeTour Passage and the North Channel which includes a jog to the west. This may seem confusing when you can see our marina straight ahead of you, but it is well marked on the charts and staightforward to navigate. Over the past few years, we have petitioned the Coast Guard to add more buoys and have been successful in our attempts. We are right off of the buoyed channel with privately maintained buoys marking the fairway to our marina. As with approaching any new area, be cautious and pay close attention to your charts. We are always available by phone or VHF (channel 16) for help with directions or navigation clarification.

Sincerely,

Joe DePaul
General Manager
Drummond Island Yacht Haven

Excellent marina & support, 2014-08-27
Captain: , Galena, MD (1826)

This is a family run facility and they were very helpful with directions coming in and they also scheduled customs and immigration, who were waiting for us at the dock upon arrival. Denny and Gay, the owners, will go out of their way to help you. Joe, the manager is the same way. Their dockage rate is extremely competitive. Docks are in good shape and easy in and out. Laundramat is wonderful, reasonably priced, pleny of machines and the dryers effecient, so says the Admiral. They have several rental vehicles to choose from, so previous comment about not having a vehicle available is very confusing.
They have heated winter storage available as well.

Customs Checking Only, 2014-08-09
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1380)

We took the advice of previous review to keep on moving which was good advice. We did after a Customs Check in to U.S. It was way out of the way and tough to find. The custom dock is rough so be careful coming along side. We went to DeTour Harbor Marina like 95% of the boats who stopped for Customs. Customs should be at DeTour Harbor Marina which is right on the De Tour Passage with immediate access right into Lake Huron. You can not phone in to customs unless you have a NEXUS Card. They did not accept a U.S. Customs & Border Patrol I.D. we had like they do in returning from Bahamas into FL. Chief Engr Bob Onboard ALLEZ! MT50

Customs Were Very Good, 2014-07-30
Captain: , Tarpon Springs (983)

Just came onto the outside dock to clear Customs inbound back to the US. The lady was very efficient and pleasant. The dock is very rough and you need to try and choose your spot on it as best you can.

Good Customs Check Point..., 2013-08-19
Captain: , Portage Indiana (503)

As others have stated don't try to take a shortcut to the entrance, we followed a sailboat in who grounded trying to cut across. The marina is a good customs check point but if your heading to the US consider Detour as a better overnight alternative after you check in here. Your miles from anything here and they use that to nickel and dime you every chance they get. We rented a car to go to dinner and reprovision at the grocery store only to find out they double booked it and the other couple hopped in it first. Kind of frustrating when your dressed for dinner, the staff is gone for the night, you have no food left on your boat, and your miles from anything!! We grabbed their bikes which they rent for a ridiculous amount of money only to find 4 flat tires. Not a good experience had here.

Will return here., 2012-09-27
Captain: , Conway (145)

NOTICE: The approach to this marina is important in low water level times. Some chartplotters will say there is a channel that will allow safe passage through a channel directly in front of and into the marina. (we were hailed by the marina staff to "turn right or left immediately and go around the small islands" " to avoid the shoal.
Nice dock hands, marina staff etc. Ships Store was very well stocked. Showers were OK.

Horrible Experience, 2012-09-14
Captain: , prospect, ky (405)

I recently completed the loop, so I have been in a lot of marinas in the last couple years. This one was my only really bad experience. It is convenient to check into customs, but my advice would be check in and keep moving. They will overcharge you for everything! $12 to use their courtesy car for a 2 mile trip to the only grocery; $20 if you go a little further. I was quoted a price of $336 to pull my boat and $110 per hour labor. They pulled my boat without incident, spent 45 min. putting my spare props on. When I went to pay my bill I was charged $110 per hour ea. for 3 mechanics $330!One of the "mechanics" a teenager only watched. When I told the owner Denny that I was not told that it was $110 per "mechanic" he said tough. They needed three men because it was windy. Were they afraid the props were going to blow away? Then they charged us $380 to drive us 1 1/2 hr. away to the closest rental car in the area. Upon arrival at the Pelston Airport we found out there is a livery svc. for $180. Overcharged again! I will never go back!

Good spot to clear customs, 2012-08-28
Captain: , LeClaire, Iowa (449)

The entrance to the marina is tricky. Do not try to cut across - use the channel markers. It was a bit windy and we would have like help docking, but other than assigning us a slip, no one came. The customs agents were prompt and courteous. They came on our boat but did not look aroundWe were there on a Sunday in August and the restaurant within walking distance was closed.

Its a good marina, 2012-08-16
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1777)

Call ahead to reserve. (They are not part of the Michigan DNR system.) They have limited number of slips. The other reviews got it right by saying it is "rustic" (aka "old") but thats not so bad. The slips are fine. The docks are old-ish but very sturdy. A bit on the shallow side but doable. The marina team is excellent. Techician Brent came on board for a minor plumbing issue and had it fixed in no time. They charged for only time involved, not a minimum hourly rate.
Michigan DNR reservations notes - Most of the marinas in Michigan take their reservations over a state run camping and harbor reservation system. You can call in or reserve online. The telecenter is a pain. The online system is much better. They say they do not take same day reservations but I'm not so sure this is accurate. Marina operators are saying that during the week you could just show up. As I write this we are in Machinaw City Marina. The State Strait marina is next door and it is empty. You could call the marina directly and they could point you in the right direction.

Good Place, 2012-07-20
Captain: , Cincinnati (1810)

Checking into customs is very convienent and quick. Marina is rustic but clean and has laundry on site. There just is not much else there on the island within walking distance. Staff is friendly and prompt with assistance when needed.

Good place to check in, 2012-07-15
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1328)

Somewhat rustic and isolated. Customs checking in is very convenient. Two miles to grocery and restaurants. Marina has rental cars but we did not rent one. Rest room and showers very basic. Nice laundromat on marina premises but locals use it too so it is very busy.

Good service but expensive, 2012-06-30
Captain: , Portage, IN (50)

Their staff was very friendly and helpful. I just found them to be somewhat expensive.

Just stopped for customs, 2011-10-15
Captain: , Algonac, MI (1659)

Customs was friendly and efficient. The marina let us tuck in for a couple of hours at no charge to wait out a passing line of thunderstorms.

Nice, but expensive, 2011-09-11
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1101)

Stopped for repairs; had to stay a week. Very helpful staff all around, but expensive. Grocery, restuarants, shops all required renting a car at $12 a pop sometimes $20 to go a few miles further. Renting a car to go 120 mile round trip to doctor cost $100.

Good place to clear US Customs, 2011-08-17
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Came here after 3 weeks in Canada. Well run and clean. Dock hands very helpful and knowledgeable of local restaurants.

Pleasant entry to the US, 2011-08-17
Captain: , Bay City, MI (609)

Be careful as you navigate to the marina, but after you are into the marina, you will find a friendly and helpful staff. Cars for rent to get groceries or go to dinner. We shared a car for dinner with two other couples. Total cost was $12, so $4 each couple. Lots of bike riding roads with some wonderfully challenging hills.

Custom agents awaited and made it easy for boaters to check into US.

Check In here, 2011-08-11
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

After a month in Canada, this was a very convienent marina to clear back into the US. Nice folks, who were very helpful. Docks are getting the worse for wear, but all in all a good stop.

Fast customs clearance., 2011-07-22
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Excellent marina, ship's store, some food, gas, diesel, mechanics, hull and body work and haul-out. Also Dennis, the owner, is a customs agent so you can clear customs here.

Very Helpful, 2010-08-24
Captain: , Cleveland (2083)

Staff was very efficient and helpful. Dockage was just under $.90 a foot which was a welcome relief from the North Channel! Facilities were clean. Customs meet us at the dock - very easy entry back to the US.

Nice welcome back to U.S., 2010-07-25

Drummond Island Yacht Haven, 2010-07-11
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

Nice place to spend a few days. Appears to be a fairly random mishmash of smaller places they bought up and combined.
Friendly helpful staff. Great place to go out for day trips as the islands provide protection from almost any area.

Courteous Custom Agents, 2009-08-25
