Reviews for Downeast Diesel
First rate diesel mechanics, 2014-07-29

When you want help with your Lugger or John Deere engines or your Northern Lights generators, Doeneast Diesel is a top choice. In the SW Harbor area, you take your boat to their dock or they'll come to you. Owner John Spofford has been working on diesel engines and gensets for decades and knows his stuff. Not only that but he's helpful, friendly, and always manages to find time to help customers new and old solve their problems. First rate!

Need to get rid of your used oil? Bring it by and dump it into John's tank. They use it to heat the shop all winter. A little hard to find by land: go past Hamilton Marine (on the right) and Downeast Diesel is on the left just before Beall's lobster pound and the Coast Guard station.

No Help for Alternator Problem, 2010-08-07

Stopped by to get help w/ overheating alternator. Was referred to Kramp Electronics who never returned my phone call.

Eating my words!, 2009-09-12

We have had persistent minor oil leaks with our John Deere since Day 1. Several other authorized John Deere mechanics have been unsuccessful over several years in solving the problem. Jerry Stewart from Bell Power in Essex, CT sent us to John Spofford, assuring us he would correct our problem leaks. . I was extremely skeptical, but I'm happy to report that I am glad to eat my words "What can this guy do that all the others haven't been able to do?" The reason?-- they take care of hundreds of the local lobster fleet, so they know what they are doing and they do it right the first time! John and his mechanics are true professionals.

This is where transients should go for mechanical repairs, 2009-07-28

Downeast Diesel is the best. They are the only mechanics we have consistently used for anything with our John Deere engines. They are certified John Deere mechanics but know other engines and anything mechanical. They do excellent work, work hard, and get things done quickly. I have been going to them for almost 6 years and can only think of positive things to say about them. John has always been available for my phone calls when I've had questions. They've done welding work to repair exhausts and have kept our engines running in tip-top shape.

When we started ActiveCaptain we had the idea that people unfamiliar with an area should have the ability to hear from locals about really good establishments and really bad ones. Downeast Diesel is an example of a really good one. Use them if you're cruising along the coast of Maine and need help.
