No more tie ups for Dogwatch Cafe, 2016-09-18
Captain: , Niantic River (10)

They did allow free tie-ups for a few hours if you dined at the Dogwatch restaurant. They don't do that anymore. Apparently they had some bad guests rowdy etc. As usual a few ruin for the many. Dont blame them for cracking down. I ended up renting a mooring for the full rate of $46. That was OK as we had a nice evening. Staff was professional.

mooring again, 2016-09-15

good mooring field...great historic town! Marina staff was very helpful. Make sure you go to the Water Street Cafe for happy hour...half price...really good appetizers!

still a first class operation, 2016-09-07

stayed over Labor Day weekend 2016 waiting out TS Hermine. we agree with all past reviews especially how friendly courteous and professional the staff is. bathrooms were clean when we were there. great food at dog watch and water street cafe.

Great professional marina in lovely setting, 2016-09-01
Captain: , Macatawa Michigan (1074)

Stayed here for a couple of nights on one of their 113 mooring balls, this one equipped with one of their new floats with twin legged bridle lines which includes attached floats and pickup sticks. Even with our high trawler bow, I easily picked up the sticks and secured the bridle lines. Once finished with the mooring, you stick the floats in two holes on the top of the mooring float to keep the mooring line clean. These are new this year and 72 of the 113 moorings are now so equipped. Great free launch service. Clean bathrooms. Call Westerly Pump-out on Ch 8 to get a free pump-out. Household recycling collected. Good restaurant on premises. Quiet peaceful night. Great town.

Update 8/31/16
We received damage to both our bow thruster props in Cuttyhunk. Went to Newport and diver advised and reported the damage (related to pod thrust on the boat next to us, another story). Called Dodson, gave them our model identification and asked if they could haul us out and do repair. When we got there they hauled us, expertly performed that repair and placed a screen over our generator intake which we needed and back in we went! We stayed overnight in a hotel in Mystic, just so they wouldn't be unreasonably rushed and tied up to a mooring ball for the second night. Cannot emphasize enough how professional this yard is run and the outstanding quality of workmanship. Reasonable and fair price. Thanks Dodson!

Accomodating, 2016-08-30
Captain: , City Island, NY (120)

Took a mooring for one night in August 2016. Called the same day. Once at the office, told them that I had an issue with a failing headboard sail slide and was connected, at 4pm, with a sailmaker in Rhode Island. He was aboard the next morning at 7:30 and made the repair. Outstanding service.

Excellent Alternative to Mystic, 2016-08-25
Captain: , Cincinnati, OH (290)

After reading the reviews for Mystic anchorages and Dodson's we chose To give Dodson's a try and stayed 3 nights. Great choice! As others state, the Dodson staff were all very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The approach to Dodson's is straightforward, are the moorings easy to pick-up.

Stonington is a nice town to poke around for an afternoon. We used Uber to get to and from Mystic ($10 fare each way). In our view, superior to the reported cost and hassle of taking the boat into Mystic.

Our only disappointment was that the fuel dock was short and transient docked vessels prevented us (47' monohull) from getting in for fuel and water.

Great stay in Stonington!, 2016-08-09
Captain: , Fernandina, FL (428)

Stayed on mooring ball for one night July 24, 2016. Very organized mooring field with good guidance and easy pickup by free launch service. Dog Watch Cafe very good but expect a wait in season.

Very good service, 2016-07-26
Captain: , Bristol, Rhode Island (2664)

We arrived with 15 other boats from our (Rhode Island) yacht club's annual cruise. Mooring service was very good, despite fast and furious check-in with many boats arriving at same time. Launch service was very accommodating: several of us decided to stay an extra day because of weather, and the staff did their best to juggle moorings to ensure everyone's comfort.

Captain: , Yorktown, VA (67)

Made reservations for a 2 night stay in a boat slip. No mention of checkout times, etc. Arrived at 1100 am and no slip was available. Circled in the outer bay/mooring field while one young lady dockhand tried to resolve. Told the other dock hands didn't show for work! Short handed and no idea of what to do.
Approached the dock area to determine where dock slips were located. Dock lady told me, the former guest hadn't departed yet, would go there. Then, within 30 sec, told to move into this slip as they were now leaving. No, now they aren't leaving? Another power boat arrives and blocks the narrow fairway. Then the original slip occupier decides to pull out on our stern. Dock lady then says disregard that slip, back down the fairway instead and park behind tHe Dog Watch cafe. Lucky, I could drive the boat as weather and current were no issue. Dock lady still confused. Little help in tying up. Slip is along an open dock and next to the water taxi. Lots of noise! I'm not impressed as no one in authority to make decisions seems to be around on Saturdays. If planning on another visit will consider a mooring ball versus this ineptitude.

A gem at the ocean gate., 2015-10-12
Captain: , Boonton (75)

Great marina to time your passage to the Atlantic, on your way to Block Island or Newport.
Friendly team will make your stay a joy. And clean private showers and heads waits for you at the shore.
Do not miss the %u201CDog Watch Café%u201D. In my opinion: the best restaurant in the region.

Very good marina, 2015-09-29
Captain: , Swifts Neck Wareham, MA (222)

We stayed on a mooring for two nights in late July. The staff is friendly, the facilities are clean, and the nearby town is beautiful. Had a wonderful time.

Easy in, easy out and a beautiful town, 2015-09-09
Captain: , Lewes, DE (424)

We stayed here for 2 nights on our way south just after Labor Day weekend and had no problem getting a mooring reservation. Mooring field is very well protected and not lots of current. Staff i extremely friendly and courteous and run the complementary shuttle whenever needed. Stonington is a beautiful town and the Dog Watch Cafe an excellent place for meals or a drink. We took a cab for the short ride to Mystic today and had a little wait going over but the cab showed up on time for the return. Would definitely recommend this over Mystic. The cost of the cab ride to Mystic was less than the added cost of staying there.

Well managed and PROFESSIONAL in every way!, 2015-09-06
Captain: , Glen Cove, NY (281)

In my view, neither Dodsons nor Stonington can any longer be described as CHARMING! Everything is still FIRST CLASS/PROFESSIONAL and WORKMANLIKE! However, if staying dockside, be prepared to be gawked at and ogled by persons spilling out from The Dog Watch dockside restaurant. If on a mooring (outer harbor) you will be rolled by wakes from busy waterway. Launch service is excellent, but can be overwhelmed by the "dinner rush" or visiting cruises. Stonington Town restaurants frequently have waits for tables exceeding one hour! ETC, ETC.

Captain: , Scarsdale, NY (190)

Radioed late on a July evening for a mooring, told they were full up but said they'd see what they could do, called back in a half hour to report they'd cleared a slip for me, the last one in the yard. Friendly, helpful staff. Fine facilities. Don't miss touring the town (nearby on foot) and don't miss ogling the yachts that live at Dodson's. I'll be back.

Good Stop on the way to BI, 2015-08-21

Quick response on the VHF for a mooring assignment! Very good launch service which is included in the price of the mooring. Also good dining choices in town. Will return again!

Helpful, friendly, professional, 2014-11-02
Captain: , Amelia Island, FL (20)

My boat was towed to Dodson's on a Friday night, needing major engine repairs. Alden, their service manager, quickly assessed the problem, had the engine pulled out, and did the repairs, allowing us to continue almost on schedule with a delivery south. Alden was knowlegable, informative, helpful, and friendly. We felt grateful to have landed at Dodson's with such capable hands.

Nice Spot, Nice Stay, 2014-08-21
Captain: , Essex (50)

Did a two night stay here a couple weeks ago, came in on a Friday and could not believe how chaotic it was, myriad of boats coming in and did have to wait some time for final instructions...actually was surprised at how much it calmed down on the weekend! Was nice to have the Dog Watch Restaurant right there, excellent little historic town for walking, took the dingy around to Sandy Point and "owned" our own section of beach...only giving four stars, can live without cable for a few days, but they really need wireless. Will return

Professional staff, excellent service, 2014-08-20
Captain: , Stuart FL (478)

Classy operation with full service boat yard and parts store. Piers and canister-type moorings in great shape. Staff uniformly knowledgable and helpful. The only negative is the restrooms & showers need to be cleaned / disinfected once in a while. Stayed a couple of nights and there was no indication that anyone mopped / cleaned restrooms. Dogwatch Cafe is excellent and reasonably priced for CT. Stonington's a lovely town but no grocery / package store within walking distance.

a gem of a stonington stop, 2014-08-13
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

we've been here a couple of times last year and the marina is just as well run and clean as ever. The launch service provides immediate access to the shore so a mooring is a great choice at $45/nite. The town has nice restuarants but nothing for provisioning. Emergency provisions like canned soup, baked beans and spagetti sauce available at Tom's News but othe than that, nada. Best lunch spot for creative sandwichwes is The Yellow House, a 10 minute stroll into town. The library is phenomenol with free take away books and an extreamly helpful staff re town history and sites to see.

Dodson Boat Yard and Dog Watch Cafe, 2014-02-03
Captain: , Atlantic Highlands (73)

We Love this place, and have enjoyed for years! Top notch marina services, if you break down this is the place to be. Most enjoyable place to be as well for walking in a beautiful historic town with great cafes and restraunts. Serve yourself fishery near commercial port, Stonington Seafood Harvesters on Hig st. about only provisions available locally.
New town docks on starboard at entry.

Would definitely return, 2013-08-14
Captain: , Groton, CT (62)

We spent the night on a mooring here in late June and really enjoyed ourselves. $45/night which included launch service. Staff was very friendly, showers and bathrooms were clean. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Ditto on all the good remarks, 2013-07-12
Captain: , Wicomico Church, VA (524)

We have been coming to Stonington since 1976. Always a pretty town and good places to eat. And, yes, the seared tuna was superb at Dog Watch. Service delightful. The same for the folks at the boat yard.

Great spot, great town, 2013-06-29
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

We've stayed here many times and have enjoyed it every time. Dodson's is great with very friendly launch staff. But come early if you want to be in the inner mooring field as it fills up early. The town is one of our favorite. Charming old town with lovely old homes to see. And the restaurant seen is terrific. Don't miss Milagro on Water Street if you like authentic Mexican food. We are told the other restaurants are great too - but we can't stop going back to Milagro.

They appreciate our business, 2012-09-05
Captain: , Sea Cliff, NY (1022)

From the moment we made the reservation to the time we left, we felt appreciated. That's one of the most important things we look for in any place we stay. We were assigned a great mooring and the launch service was very attentive, always with a smile. Used the shower facilities which were clean and modern.
The town is delightful and an easy walk. At the time we were there they had relatively inexpensive diesel (Valvetech at that).
Ate at the Dog Watch Cafe, the restaurant at the marina. Excellent meal. The seared tuna was done to perfection. Good value for the dollar.
We will return. This is a first class facility.

Great spot, 2012-08-30
Captain: , Stamford (130)

Recently stayed on the fuel dock here. Was a very nice place, had a nice little bar with a fun nightlife. Be sure to make a reservation at the restaurants during the summer months, we ran into a 1 to 2 hour wait everywhere we walked. No biggie because there was a chinese restaurant that delivered right to the boat! The guy in front of us dropped his gas cap and the deck hand repeated tried to dive down and retrieve it. Very nice people work here. The 4 bathrooms were clean and usually available. We will return even though they didn't have Dark n stormy's at the bar.

Well Protected Moorings, 2012-08-26
Captain: , Niantic, CT (564)

Nice facilities at the head of a beautiful harbor. Well protected from wind, wakes, no current. Moorings are tightly spaced. Four heads on shore with decent showers. Nice walk up water street into town with quaint shops and a few good restaurants. Good restaurant on site. Train runs nearby but not loud.

Quiet Town/Great Boatyard, 2012-08-23
Captain: , Stuart, FL (909)

Wound up staying here for six nights to correct a watermaker problem. The staff is very courteous and helpful. The facilities are spotless. The Dog Watch Cafe was very good - not fine dining but very enjoyable and reasonable. Stonington is a beautiful town with great colonial architecture to stroll around and look at. We took the dinghy around to Sandy Point and enjoyed the. Each there on two different days. Stonington is highly recommended.

Great People, 2012-08-02
Captain: , Freeport, CA (30)

We spent twop weeks on the hard at Dodson's while the bottom was stripped and repainted. The quality of the people, attention to detail and the customer orientation made this an outstanding experience.

A beautiful harbor, 2012-06-12
Captain: , Rumsey Island (330)

One of the nicest harbors on the east coast! Dodson's is also one of the best yards in New England. Very responsive launch service. Great restaurant in Dog Watch Cafe. Lovely town.

Great yard, quaint village, 2012-03-09
Captain: , Pawtuxet Cove, RI (272)

We had a great weekend here and will repeat it soon. The yard and facility are great, with nice, helpful folks and the town of Stonington is fantastic. Very scenic as well, bring your camera.

Excellent Service and Great Eats, 2011-10-05
Captain: , Bridgeport, CT (548)

Came in for for a mooring, holding tank pump out, and getting diesel, water, block ice (off season, they still had it!!!), showers, laundry (wash/dry) and a great dinner. The dock staff goes the extra fathom to help you in. Mooring was a little expensive, $50 for off season.

Very Helpful and Easy to Like, 2011-07-27
Captain: , Marietta GA (416)

We took a Dodson mooring at the north end of the harbor for our 35' sailboat and enjoyed a quiet night, except for the occasional train whistle. Launch service was friendly and efficient as were the dockhands when we took on fuel.

Only downside was that the moorings were a bit tight and we kept eyeing the boats around us, wondering if we might bump in the night. Next time I'll tell them I have a 40 footer (include the dinghy davits) just to get some elbow room.

Showers were first rate: clean and private. Town is a short stroll and full of fun restaurants.

Terrific Experience over several days, 2011-06-28
Captain: , Mamaroneck,NY (46)

spent 3 nights here this summer. Dock staff was very helpful. Also needed a fast fuel filter change, and the yard staff did it almost immediately. Restaurant and bar right at the docks is a plus, and the shops in town are an easy walk. We look forward to going back again.

Mixed views, 2011-06-13
Captain: , Boston (60)

I stopped here twice in early June. The first time, I had a fantastic experience, great restaurants, friendly service, beautiful area. I was given a mooring just off the town docks with Hinkleys all around. At $47/night, it was a bit pricey but worth it. The second time I stopped here, I had a very different experience. It was late and the crew was tired. We were put on a mooring near the back of the mooring field. Waves that came broadside on to us made it impossible to sleep and we seemed to be an inconvience for the launch but this likely had to do with the late hour (10pm) on a cool windy Friday night.

If my only experience was the first night I spent here, I would likely rate it four stars or perhaps even five.

Super layover marina, 2011-05-16
Captain: , Jersey City (506)

Left the boat on a Dodson's mooring for a week while we took public transport back to NYC to work. Dodson's were extremely helpful and professional. The restaurant on premises was excellent although completely crowded (July 4th weekend)

Dodson's Boatyard took great care of me, 2011-04-13
Captain: , Pilots Point (466)

Was towed in last summer after losing the engine and west winds dind't allow sailing through Watch Hill Pass. Yard was terrific the next morning and the mechanic was excellent in getting me back underway and showing me the tools and techniques to fix the problem myself the next time.

Have stoped in Stonington a handful of times. The anchorge is filled with exceptional boats. Dog Watch Cafe, right at the marina has good food and lively energy. Other good restaurants in town too. Try the sweet Stonington Scallops, fished by the last remaining commercial fishing fleet in Connecticut. Also, Stonington Seafood Harvesters is a find; only 24 hour seafood store I know of. You get a craving in the middle of the night, head over to their outdoor freezers, shop and swipe your card...all on the honor system. Makes you feel kinda good that such a place exists.

Town is charming yet very upper crusty. You don't get a sense that they lay out the welcome mat for visitors. Don't be fooled by the quiet streets on a Sat. night though. You could roll a bowling ball down Main street and not hit a soul and think everyone is asleep. But open the door to any restaurant and you'd think that you just found a great party. In this village they like their revelry indoors.

busy place, helpful staff, 2009-08-12
Captain: , Miami, fl (3544)

pretty busy place, a little tight getting in with a large boat as the moorings are tightly packed but the staff is helpful. Walking distance of town, restaurant with live music on the premises.

Old School Quality, 2009-08-01
Captain: , Barnegat NJ USA (610)

Dotson BY is a throwback to the time when only the select few managed to get on the water. If you want to "boat watch" and breathe the same air as the upper crust, this is a likely spot. You know you're in fast company when there are this many masthead burgees to check with the binoculars. The facility itself is first rate, as are the prices. The village of Stonington is also a delight, however I would like to see something other than real estate offices next time through. Still, there are a sufficient number of the old proprietors to maintain a feeling of relaxed gentility. BTW, don't plan to ride out very rough weather in Stonington.

Not the best so far, 2009-05-27
Captain: , Fredericton, NB, CAN (477)

The mooring was $47.00, diesel was more than $3.00 / gal. Staff were not the friendliest. On the plus side - Noah's restaurent, a six block walk was super!

Several excellent eateries and small shops in easy-to-walk town. Launch service if needed or you can dinghy into town.
