Reviews for Demopolis Yacht Basin
Affordable and comfortable. Drive or bike to stores and services., 2017-03-08
Captain: , North East, MD (385)

Note that this and previous reviews apply mostly to Kingfisher Marina, since the Demopolis Bay marina is silted in and closed to larger vessels, except for the fuel dock. Nice concrete floating docks. Friendly helpful staff. Loaner car. Very clean comfortable clubhouse with washers/dryers and several showers per bathroom. Large screen TV and rockers. Covered open air deck on second floor. Vacant downtown 1 mile. Supermarket 2 miles. Wal-Mart and other stores 3 miles.

Great place with some communication issues, 2016-12-10
Captain: , Ft. Collins, CO (331)

We arrived at the fuel dock and were greeted warmly and promptly fueled ($2.38) and assigned a slip. No pump out that late afternoon due to freezing weather coming that night. Ann Marie and Terry got us in to our slip and tied up and hooked up. The docks and facitities are new and in great shape. Ann Marie gave us the number to a local car rental who picked us up the following morning and we were able to leave the rental at the marina when done.

The four stars come from having trouble contacting staff the next day. We were here for two nights and the first day we left messages at the fuel dock several times with no call back. Ann Marie, who stays on channel 11 did not answer several calls.

Over all a good stay and we will be back.

Great Fuel prices , 2016-11-18

Great price on fuel $2.38 gal. and very helpful friendly staff.

New Marina - Nice Folks, 2016-07-14
Captain: , Harrison, tn (10)

New concrete floating docks. Power 240vlts (which is not a given anymore). Terry, the dock master is very helpful. Had a fuel issue after taking on 500g, with fouled racor. Not sure it came from here, just might have kicked up some crud.

Much nicer than pricer (Legacy - Destin). If your going down the Tombigbee, it's a must stop.

Very thirsty Marina, 2015-12-08
Captain: , Ontonagon MI (10)

My boat arrived with flybridge removed, and despite having an 18't lift with adjustable straps, Ed said he would have to call in a crane service to set flybridge on boat, who charged Ed $300 (their minimal) and then he charged me $400+$255 for labor to put straps on skid, and remove straps from skid, once on boat. For $100 above crane service fee and $255 labor, they should have been able to remove flybridge from skid(about 15mins) set flybridge properly on boat, and could have built a staircase from the leftover skid material, since the whole lot is gravel with poor drainage, and they palced my boat in a huge water puddle that was at least 3"d. Ed also owns Eastern Shore MArine in Fairhope AL, and must be accustomed to overcharging for halfassed work.

Demopolis Yacht Basin, 2015-10-14
Captain: , Red Wing, MN (55)

Stoped on Oct 13, 2015 for the night and fuel.
New basin has floating docks, most covered, brand new laundry, boaters lounge, open air covered deck with tables and chairs above laundry.
Hug gas doick coming in - shallow to side - back out.
Stay in center of entrance to new basin.
Restaurant is closed.
2 hour loner car.
Nice stop - friendly people

Great Staff, 2015-10-08
Captain: , Mobile, AL (30)

We stopped to fuel up and the guys at the fuel docks were above and beyond friendly and helpful. This was the best time had fueling up on the Tombigbee! Great job!

Diesel @$2.69/gal., prices go up north of here by ~$1.00/gal., 2015-06-29
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (462)

Cheap fuel but watch the entrance; hug the dock when approaching the fuel dock there is a shoal 75 feet off the tip of the dock. Ask the attendant for specifics.

Dempolis Yacht Basin is primarily just a fuel dock now, 2014-12-21
Captain: , Aurora, KY (146)

Kingfisher Bay Marina next door is the new facility all transients are directed to now (see reviews of Kingfisher). The DYB is primarily just used for refeuling due to the extreme silting of the old marina. There is a good restaurant onsite, a ship's store, repair facilities and a motel. Good staff and cheap fuel prices.

Not so good, 2014-11-29
Captain: , Bay Springs, MS (120)

This was our worse stay on the Pickwick to Mobile run. We were here a week and two days due to weather. The last two days we got charged two different rates. The man at the docks explained that, "That's the way it is." When asked if we could talk to the owner, we were told, "Not really." The town folk were super friendly. We walked all over the historic district. There was even free wine tasting at the "Vine & Hoof".' Loaner car was available for 2-hour runs. Employees were indifferent to any needs. The shop manager was rude to us and to his workers. WIFI did not work. We would never stay here again.

Longer stay than planned, 2014-11-13
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1997)

We pulled in this Fall for 3 nights and enjoyed catching up with old friends. the marina is safe secure and very functional.
We had to return for a week of repairs after an anchor trip line incident. The yard pulled us and did the repairs we needed we also had our bottom painted and the bill was fair.
Fred is great he really cares about this marina and it shows that said the repair side of the business that has recently been leased out needs some help...

The New Basin is First Class, 2014-05-14
Captain: , Kettering, Ohio (250)

Demopolis Yacht Basin, new section is a class act worth the stop.
Excellent facilities, staff and courtesy car. New docks, Cable, and all and now a pool. Fred also offers a travel lift with a staff that makes a person welcome.

Stopped for Gas, 2014-04-04
Captain: , Jamaica Beach, TX (180)

Friendly professional staff. Easy to get into and out of. The fuel docks are SOUTH of the marina entrance about 150 yards.

Newly expanded, 2013-11-11
Captain: , Meredith, NH (638)

Skipper Bob suggests they do not have a lot of room for loopers but we found they could accomodate many transients & they did while we were there for 2 nights. There were 10 - 12 of us & room for more & they are expanding more. Beautiful town clearly trying to self improve.

Average Marina with Below Average Restaurant, 2013-10-26
Captain: , Dataw Island, SC (290)

Stayed here 1 night in the older marina. Would not answer my phone call or VHF call until my boat was almost at the fuel dock. Main emphasis when they do contact you is to sell fuel. They ask which marina you want to stay at - old or new - but give no further info. The restaurant food was terrible with service to match.

Rate is for Kingfisher (see other listing), 2012-10-29
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Same owner as Kingfisher. Just get fresh deisel here at low price then dock at Kingfisher.

Facility getting old, 2012-10-04
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1896)

Got diesel here at 3.869 on 10-3-12. Lots of debris in basin. Water depth good, repositioned to basin to the north for overnight dock.

Two Marinas, 2012-09-18
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1448)

There are now two marinas. The old Demopolis Yacht Basin (which is rather long in the tooth) and the new Kingfisher marina (a brand new well protected marina in a separate basin with floating docks, excellent heads/showers/boaters lounge/pool). The two marinas are related somehow but we did not determine exactly how. You go to the DYB fuel dock to register for Kingfisher. We bought fuel there for $3.68/gallon. You can use the DYB courtesy car even if you are staying at Kingfisher. There is a golf cart available to travel between the two marinas.

Improved Facilities, 2012-05-27
Captain: , jackson, TN (884)

Showers and laundry completely remodeled and vastly improved. Docks in need of attention. Courtesy car. Good fuel prices.

First Class!, 2012-02-06
Captain: , Marietta, GA (260)

Kingfisher Bay Marina is first class. Brand new with power, water and pump out at every slip. Very friendly and helpful staff. Keith at fuel dock was great, as was Fred, who gave us great advice on travel down the waterway. Beautiful clubhouse with a landry room nicer than ours at home. Pristine bathrooms and showers. Great people and great place to get stranded (stuck there for a week b/c of flooding). Fred gave us a great rate due to being stranded.

Better times are coming, 2012-01-20
Captain: , Chattanooga (220)

Since their fuel dock pumps 200,000 gallons a week into tugs, you are assured of fresh fuel. The harbor has silted up and I ran aground 30 feet from the fuel dock (October 2011). There is a new basin under construction, so the old one is being allowed to deteriorate. The restaurant is O.K. The laundry and showers are clean.

Great place to stop, 2011-12-10
Captain: , Earth (561)

We spent a night and used the courtesy car to reprovision, the staff was extremely helpfull and friendly. There is laundry facilities at the end of the dock, and the showers were the nicest we have seen. wifi was very spotty.

New marina is OPEN-Kingfisher Bay, 2011-11-15
Captain: , Mystic, CT (382)

Everything is brand new, the restroom building opened only 3 weeks ago! The laundry area includes multiple washers & dryers and a large flat screen TV w/cable. Golf carts are provided to easily get you to the office. Electric, water & pumpout is located at each slip, no charge for pumpout. Courtesy car provided, 3 grocery stores located nearby, including a Wal-Mart

Demopolis, 2011-11-10
Captain: , Stillwater, MN (287)

Beautiful new docks. This is a must stop. Everythig for the extended, fuel dockside pumpout.

Better All the Time, 2011-11-02
Captain: , Seabrook, TX (323)

We had stopped here on our trip north a couple of months ago and found it adequate, but find it much improved now since the new floating docks have opened. There is a brand new building on the new docks with wonderfully clean restroom and showers with good water pressure and lots of hot water, as well as numerous washers and dryers and a large flat-screen TV. Fred is very helpful, as are the fuel dock staff and Kim at the office, and Fred has big plans (including a swimming pool) that should make this even more of a must-stop on the Tenn-Tom. He has provided golf carts for zipping over to the fuel dock, office, ships store, and courtesy cars (which are adequate). Demopolis has its share of lovely old homes, and, of course, a Walmart.

great stop heading south, 2011-11-01
Captain: , Brookings (308)

Very accommodating. courtesy car available. New restrooms, laundry are done very well. Invited to join the evening happy hour as we were docking. Friendly atmosphere.

Captain: , Fort Myers, FL (141)

We arrived in time for the opening of the new facility and laundry/restroom facility. This place is GREAT now. They still have some landscaping to complete, but this is an up and comer!

A welcome stop., 2011-08-18
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, FL (603)

Update August 2011. The new marina is open. Barely. Appear to be some nice covered slips but there are NO amenities yet. I am looking forward to staying there in 2012 but not in 2011. Southbound Loopers after Joe Wheeler should check ahead. Really nice people here who try hard.

By no means is this a resort marina it is a working marina. Good fuel prices, competent staff, ability to handle whatever comes at it. (There was a 180' cruise ship at the fuel dock overnight.)

Docks are tippy but fine. Think of this as an interstate truck stop and not a Marriott resort.

OK if you need to stop, 2011-07-29
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (539)

Basic marina, on the rough side. Overpriced, but an acceptable stop. Ancient courtesy car runs but always seems trashed, probably by other cruisers. Supplies available a few miles away in Demopolis.

Demopolis Yacht Basin, 2011-06-08
Captain: , On the water (1501)

Great Marina with very fine staff. There are now new bathrooms/showers and laundry room! The new marina should be open around July 15th with limited services untill all the plans are finished. Good food at on-site restaurant. This marina has a do-it-yourself boatyard complete with power and water. Tow boats fill up at this marina so there is always fresh diesel. Fred and his team will go out of their way to help cruisers!! Tell them Lifes2Short sent you if you stay at the dock!

Very helpful staff, 2011-05-17
Captain: , Port Aransas, TX (1453)

Stayed 2 nights waiting for severe weather to pass. Staff very helpful with anchorage suggestions and contact with lock tender for current info on flooding (Steve at Demop Lock was fantastic! He fielded our questions by phone, then recognized us when we lock through and chatted with us beside our bollard while the lock drained.)
Laundry facilities were clean; wifi signal at transient (fuel) dock was very weak, but had 4 bars on Verizon air card. It was recommended we walk dog behind the motel and repair yard where there was a large grassy area. The fuel dock was very busy with several large (huge) push boats stopping to refuel and provision, all night and day - somewhat noisy but very interesting.

We needed A/C repair and marina arranged service on short notice with local contractor. Work was done quickly and at reasonable cost.

Demopolis Marina expansion in June 2011, 2011-05-14
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens (605)

Stopped again on way north, 5/11/2011 and learned that a totally new marina is planned to open in June 2011 with docks to 70 ft long. The marina depths will be 14 ft throughout inside and is in the first phase of a development. Marina enterance will be just north of the fuel dock.

No service, 2010-11-19
Captain: , Montreal (201)

No service at the fuel dock you are left all by yourself and definitely overpriced with horrible docks. If do not mind anchoring, get the fuel and carry on for an anchorage.

ripped off, 2010-10-18
Captain: , Nokomis Florida (70)

Came here on purpose. arrived late and rafted next to a huge power boat. Couldn't get off our boat to use any facilities or shore power. We still had to pay the overpriced 1.25 per foot. never again.

I Came Here on Purpose, 2010-08-25
Captain: , Las Vegas, NV (143)

I was moving from Florida in 2007 and needed a safe place for long term storage of my sailboat. DYB provided me with a solid facility for storage that is well north of the Gulf's hurricanes.

Their staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They seem to really care.

Their marina and ancillary services are kind of weak, but that will probably all change once the new marina is finished.

I for one am very thankful to have a place such as DYB. There was no way I could have afforded the fees or the stresses of leaving my boat in Florida.

DYB, 2009-12-16
Captain: , Perdido Key Florida (460)

Demopolis was OK. Fuel was expensive at 3.09 per gallon for gasoline. The dock at our slip was very wobbly. Restaurant was good but closed on Sunday. Friendly staff was very helpful in getting us to our slip and fuel dock.

Demopolis Yacht Basin, 2009-11-28
Captain: , Solomons, MD (1915)

We planned to stop here to have the boat hauled so we could paint the bottom. The yard provides power and water when one is on the hard. Yard is gravel; vice concrete pads. A bit dusty with the local traffic. A courtesy car is available. The staff is accommodating. The owner passes along local knowledge as needed depending upon the conditions on the river. A new marina is in the works with a planned opening date in late 2010.

What a dump, 2009-10-11
Captain: , fairland (2653)

Good things: courtesy car, cheap fuel, last place to provision before Mobile
Bad things: docks are about to fall apart and are very slippery, no help with tie up, baths are scary, too expensie for what you get. Restaurant closed on Sunday. Laundry is expensive.
Do they think they are in Florida?

What can you do?

Nothing fancy, 2009-06-09
Captain: , Jacksonville FL (94)

Arrived at this marina on April 21, 2009. The diesel price was $2.18 including tax. The staff was very good and knowledgable especially with tips on where to anchor. The dock area was fine. We were on a face dock with our 44 foot boat which draws 3 feet. The laundry, shower and toilet house leaves a lot to be desired. The shower room and toilet area reminded me of a old broken down motel room circa 1960.

Demoplois Marina, 2009-02-19
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

I thought it had the same level of scruffyness as Midway Marina. But again, the staff and other boaters were friendly and helpful.

Yes, they do fuel the tow boats, but inside the marina, it's a couriosity to watch not a problem. The tows do not enter the marina.

Oasis on Tombigbee, but posh - not, 2009-01-26
Captain: , Knoxville, TN (1788)

Perspective is relative - if you are traveling North from Mobile Bay, this is a welcome oasis; if you are traveling South and have already stopped at other marinas (like Midway Marina, Fulton, MS), you will most likely be disappointed. To call this a working marina, is an apt description. Think of it as floating truck stop. Commercial traffic and barge crews predominate.

Restrooms: yes - 2. Showers: yes - 1; Courtesy car - yes. Pets welcome: yes, but NO grass for dogs; laundry: yes; restaurant: ok. There is a nice park with playground 1/2 mile walk along the highway, but worth it (this is the ONLY thing for kids to do in the area).

Good stop , 2008-12-22

Good place for repairs, a decent restuarant and secure dockage.

This is a real marina, 2008-07-11
Captain: , Starkville, Mississippi (58)

This is a "working" marina and services most all commercial tow boat traffic on the river. A pretty good marina resturant, excellent security and they can fix most anything on most any boat. Very large travellift.

Demopolis Yacht Basin, 2007-04-21
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (141)

This marina is a welcome site after the long 215 miles or so from Mobile, AL. This is a full service Marina with boat yard and restaurant. A good place to fuel up, do laundry and restock before continuing on up or down the Tenn-Tom Waterway

Great Transit Marina, 2007-02-22
Captain: , Snellville, GA (162)

Going South or headed North this is your only choice from Mobile to Columbus. AND not a bad one either! Most any repair needed can be done and the people are VERY friendly!

This is a nice marina with a decent restaurant.
Very helpful staff and a boatyard with lift. Great diesel prices!!
Also the last marina before Mobile.
