Reviews for Deltaville Boat Yard
Good boatyard that offers reasonable storage rates and a well trained and talented workforce, yet allows DIY, 2016-12-08
Captain: , Chicago, IL (24)

We stored our boat for the past summer season after our return from the Caribbean to some needed maintenance. Work was done in a timely manner and reasonably within estimates. Work is high quality by experienced, trained technicians. This is the third time we have used this yard. Storage is reasonably priced and they allow DIY work. Town is nearby (1-2 miles) with many Marine ammenities such as West Marine, a sailmaker, a rigger, canvas shop. Rental cars available through Enterprise in Gloucester, VA with a shuttle during the week.

Maintenance at DBY, 2016-11-03
Captain: , Cobbs Creek, VA (20)

I have had great sucess using the folks at DBY. They stay on top of projects, and keep me posted on progress. Have had varying kinds of work done there, and always found the technicians and management to be first rate.

Great yard, great people, 2016-10-18
Captain: , Fowey (123)

We have used DBY since 2008 and are very happy customers. The yard is very professionally run by Keith and he is well supported by a team of skilled and highly qualified technicians. Over the years we have had electronic, mechanical, rigging and hull work carried out and have been very pleased with the quality. We would highly recommend DBY.
( Keith contacted us by email a few months after we had work carried out this year to check that everything was OK and that we were happy. This is what makes us keep going back)

creative solutions! , 2016-10-01
Captain: , Portland maine (81)

Our Ericson sailboat was losing her keel! From haul out to dropping the keel, Keith and his team were professional, and talented. Our project manager, Starr, arranged for a local machinist, Wes Summerfield to fabricate sleeves for the rusted bolts. They are a work of art! John and David worked quickly to rebed the keel with new backing plates, 5200, and fiberglass. The job came in under budget, is beautifully engineered, and our time here has been productive as we attended to diy projects. Deltaville boatyard and marina are top notch!

Fantastic Yard, 2016-07-28
Captain: , Occoquan Harbour (65)

If you are looking to have work done on your vessel this is the place to take it. We brought our Kadey Krogen Whaleback to Deltaville for an extensive maintenance period prior to full time cruising based on recommendations of other Kadey Krogen owners. We were not disappointed. Keith took the time to explain what needed to be done, what could be deferred, and some recommendations for system improvements. Bobby along with John were assigned to our boat and these gents know their stuff. Frankly I don't think I would want anyone else working on our boat. Starr the project manager ensured all work was performed to ABYC standards and stayed on top of the work from start to finish. Deltaville stands behind their work and ensured we were completely satisfied before releasing the boat as well as providing follow-on assistance as needed.

Great Work!, 2016-05-25
Captain: , Huntington, NY (10)

I recently had my new Kadey Krogen Expedition waxed and had her bottome painted here based on recommendations from fellow Krogen owners. I wasn't disappointed. The work was completed on time and very well done. Keith made room for me in his busy schedule on our trip north, while Starr kept me in the loop nearly every day with a progress report. The staff is professional, friendly and willing to please. They even attended to several minor issues that developed during the trip from Stuart. I've put Deltaville Boat Yard on my "Must Return" list!

Worked us in and got us going, 2016-05-10
Captain: , Jacksonville, Fl (245)

We developed a small oil leak on our Port engine. Keith came out and confirmed the leak location on Saturday then got us someone on the boat Monday morning. We were on our way after lunch.

While on the boat Saturday he told us about the volunteer fire departments annual oyster roast that night. We decided to go and had great time.

Great DIY boatyard and Nice people would definately recommend and go back, 2016-02-07

Complete New Nav System, 2015-11-08
Captain: , Deltaville VA (140)

I left my 2006 Kadey Krogen over the summer at DBY. (I'm too busy with work for summer boating.) Keith and his crew designed and installed a new Garmin 8000 Nav system. Additionally, Keith Ruse and his crew did a complete service and diagnosed and repaired an engine problem. It was done on schedule and allowed me to head to FL with confidence.

While DBY is not my homeport, it is my home away from home. I left DBY and Keith has inquired twice about my satisfaction.

Dedicated Long Term Customer Commitment, 2015-10-31
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1101)

UPDATE: October 31, 2015
I had a particularly puzzling problem with the drivetrain. Keith researched it, obtained confilcting recommedations from two representaives from the manufacturer, then researched a solution further over many hours before coming to course of action. Lots of time on his part with a measured response that made sense at minimal cost that worked Great job again by Keith Ruse, DBY owner.

UPDATE: September 12, 2015

The final chapter of the Balmar charging system played out over the last few days when the starboard engine start battery and bow thruster battery both exhibited near failure condition. The defective Balmar DuoChargers Deltaville Boatyard years ago, but replaced last year had apparently damaged these batteries and diminished their service lives. Keith stood behind his work and warranty and replaced both 8D batteries at his expense. I do not know of another boatyard where customer service after the sale is any stronger or more deeply committed to the highest ethical, quality, honesty, and safety standards. Keith Ruse is a man of his word, maintains a business model where he invests in across the board ABYC training for his staff, and pays personal attention to every customer to earn their total satisfaction. When Keith says he will do something, he does it. Period. That is why we keep coming back season after season.

In June 2010, Deltaville Boatyard installed six Balmar voltage management components - Centerfielder, Regulators, and Duo-Chargers %u2013 to include Balmar in-line fuses that came with them. Many, many months later, one fuse blew when a component failed and the fuse holder burned inside, though fortunately did not start a fire with adjacent fuses. Both DBY and I shared a safety concern should the other fuse holders similarly perform. In October 2012, using a new Blue Sea Systems Safety Hub 150 Fuse Block I provided, DBY removed all the fuse holders in question and rewired the components to the Safety Hub creating a far safer and reliable installation. DBY provided the labor, wire, etc. at their expense. This action demonstrates their commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction, values we greatly appreciate that keeps us coming back.

Great stop for transients, 2015-10-15
Captain: , Burlington, VT (20)

The facilities are great and the staff was skilled and helpful. After haulout we were placed right by an electrical outlet. A hose bib complete with double length hose and nozzle was also close by. A ladder was set up for us, and additional ladders were available to borrow. We had a hull wash and wax done, and also some work to get some oil out of the bilge sump. The technicians were conscienscious and pleasant. The Deltaville Marina shares space with the yard and provides convenient services for transients while the boat is hauled out.

excellent work, 2015-10-06
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (50)

When we came thru Deltaville north bound in the spring of '15 I set up a work order for Sept 22 to time it with our south bound trip. We arrived a day early, anchored out front and were hauled the next morning right on schedule.

We had the bottom cleaned, bottom painted, Zincs changed, hull waxed and prop/rudder painted on our Kadey Krogen 39.

We stayed aboard as were out for 3 days total. The service and workmanship was excellent. They met my expectations

Excellent Yard, 2015-04-19
Captain: , San Francisco, CA (211)

Starr and the crew at Deltaville outdid themselves in assisting with my purchase and setting up for truck transport to Florida of a Mainship 34 Pilot.
My son and my self were at Deltaville twice to complete the survey and purchase. Deltaville was there to facilate the various tasks. Without my presense, they prepped the boat for truck shipment to my home area, Stuart, Florida. The boat arrived in perfect condition. They did everything necessary to prevent transit damage.
Thanks & Cheers to the crew at Deltaville Boatyard

Lacking in Customer Service, 2015-01-23
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (333)

When my boat was hauled out to be shipped by truck, I decided to do the rigging. Immediately, the rigger gave me the impression that I would not have his attention. When they tore-up my cabin sole stepping the mast, the rigger paid no attention, his helper down below said everything is fine, and the project manager disappeared and just left my bill at the desk. I had to pretty much take over the project manager work get get the boat, mast and rollerfurler loaded on the truck.

I notified Keith the owner, and in two months have not even received a simple appology... no word at all!

Electric Repairs, 2014-09-22
Captain: , Norfolk (20)

I had a tricky electrical problem and Neal spent all afternoon hunting it down. It was simple to fix, but tough to isolate. All of the staff was friendly & accomodating. Thanks

Saved Money, 2014-09-15
Captain: , Officially, Freeport ME. (10)

Execellent knowledge, excellent mechanics. Competative price. They worked very hard to save me money on my repairs and parts. Great place to be laid up.

Great machanics, 2014-06-09
Captain: , Grand Haven (470)

I don't think you will find better machanics in the area. Keith is a hands on owner. We had our 454 starboard engine throw its main bearings. It was rebuilt at another location, However Deltaville pulled and reinstalled with close attion to detail. The schedule was a little longer than they had indicated.

Excellent Boatyard, 2013-12-13
Captain: , San Diego (60)

Hauled our Nordhavn 47 here in late October 2013. We had a lot of work done. Regular bottom job, they did a far superior prep than any yard we have used. They serviced our ABT stabilizers and hydraulic bow thruster. Also had a long list of little things that they addressed for us. We provided them with a list before we arrived, and they had the parts ready when we got there. Their mechanic was absolutely top notch. Their price was fair and as quoted. We were on a tight schedule, and they completed everything on time. 40 years of boating, and this was the best experience we have ever had in a boatyard. Highly recommend.

Very Good Boatyard, 2013-10-15
Captain: , Philadelphia (51)

Excellent service at competitive rates. Master mechanic very qualified and wasted no time in fixing 5 different items, one of which required new fitting and new valve. On board at 1pm and done by 3:15pm. No wasted time and very pleasant to converse with. Helps to send photos of what needs to be fixed so yard is ready with required parts. Service Manager very helpful ahead of time via email so crew ready when we arrived.

Great Yard, 2013-10-13
Captain: , Quantico, VA (261)

The staff are very friendly and excellent workmanship at a fair price. You will enjoy your stay here.

Good Value, 2013-10-12
Captain: , St Petersburg, FL (1233)

We came here for a DIY bottom job and hull wax. The haul out was tried aft in first but changed to go in forward due to stern arch clearances. However the yard was efficient at getting us out, pressure washed and blocked with no extra charges. When we needed help with the dripless shaft replacement they were available quickly and did the short haul and rudder removal then replaced the seal assembly with parts we ordered on line so no mark ups. They kept us at the service dock for 24 hours to do our shaft alignment at lay-day cost of $10. The haul out and lay days are very reasonable but labour can add up quickly. We had water and electric at our boat which we could use at no extra charge.

The boat yard allowed us to receive and send lots of packages not related to the haul out via UPS, FedEx and USPS and as full time cruisers this was very helpful.

The Marina is separate and we took 1 week for $39/person. The showers are clean and work. The laundry is not large so you may have to wait but it all works. The lounge has free wifi, free coffee and a courtesy phone for free local and toll-free use. There is an outside screened grill area with courtesy grills. They have free bikes and it's easy to cycle the 10 minutes to West Marine mega store, the hardware store or local grocery stores. There is a courtesy car for $1/hour but limited to Deltaville only and they only allow 1 hour at a time. Over all great value if using the yard.

Our over all impression was staff are extremely friendly and we had a very good experience.

Great work at a fair price, 2013-09-16
Captain: , Bear, DE (230)

We just finished a large yard job here. The projects on our steel boat included:

Replacing shaft
Removing rust from, then repainting all bilges
Replacing waste water system
Installing lead ballast
Replacing bilge pump system
Plus about a dozen smaller projects

We were very impressed with the professionalism and skill of the entire staff. The yard assigned us a project manager, who quoted most of the above work as fixed cost projects. This allowed us to budget what we could afford upfront. Most of the quotes were very accurate (a job quoted as 10 hours took 10 hours) and the few that ran over time were simply charged at the quoted amount, no more.

Because virtually every compartment on the boat was being worked on, scheduling each project became critical. We found the yard was usually very clear about what was happening when, and working around delays due to parts availability. They allowed us to source our own materials when we could procure them for less (for instance, on eBay or used.)

DBY staff are trained to ABYC standards on most processes, and always took the time to explain why they recommended a particular method or material to meet those standards. As far as we can tell, there were no "short cuts" taken on our boat.

The yard bills weekly, and because of how much work we had done, the bills were fairly complicated. This led to some minor misunderstandings that were quickly and cordially addressed. We never felt intimidated or nervous about discussing any of the work or billing issues.

During the final sea trial, one component of the shaft replacement was not working as the yard expected. They quickly worked to find a suitable replacement, and fixed the issue for no additional charge. They have assured us that anything else that might come up during our shake down cruise for the next several weeks will also be addressed.

All in all, we have a high level of confidence in the major work performed at this yard and recommend them highly.

great service from Deltaville boatyard , 2013-07-31
Captain: , Cleveland, OH (140)

In June I had major work done on my 36' MV in the boatyard. Just recently I needed to change an impeller, something I had not done myself yet. I called Mac, the mechanic who did my previous work. He walked me through the process via phone and I was back in business. These guys are the epitome of excellence and customer service. If you need marine service in the Deltaville area, choose the Deltaville Boatyard!

Great experience, 2013-06-26
Captain: , Outer Banks, N.C. (10)

Did a quick haul out and bottom paint. Chuck was over the top helpful and the staff did a great job. Had to get back in the water at 730 am and the lift was there waiting at 7:15. Nice place fun oookouts with other boater, the only weird thing is the connection with Delftaville Marina, which is a separate company, Call them to figure out the costs to use showeres, head and pool.

Knows more about maintaining sailboats than I do!, 2013-06-09
Captain: , Grand Haven Michigan (110)

Great experience having work done in June 2013.
Smart enough to recommend doing shaft/engine alignment 24 hours after putting boat in water, not same day!
Smart enough to check condition of cutlass bearing when boat came out of water.
Gel coat repair looks great.
Paid for great advice on teak finishing.
Deltaville also has good sail repair, good canvas shop and a big West Marine.
I will go to Deltaville Boat Yard again.

Excellent service, 2013-05-01
Captain: , Stony Point, NY (852)

Now on our way north on April 30, 2013, we smelled diesel and found that there was a leak on the forward end of the engine. Checked the charts and happily found we were just south of Windmill Point near Deltaville. We turned in and took a slip. The next morning first thing John the mechanic came and took a look, found a pinhole leak in one of the fuel hoses. He replaced it and all is well. Another excellent and timely job here.

Last fall - before Hurricane Sandy - We needed to have a seawater washdown system installed on our way south. We contacted DBY because we had some work dome in 2010. I had Defender send the pump to them and they did the installation. We arrived and on Mon. the head mechanic and the installer came out to the boat on the hook to look at the job and discuss what we wanted done. Tues. the pump arrived and we brought the boat to a dock. Wed the job was done. Couldn't be happier with how it works. Curteous and friendly staff from top to bottom. Not cheap, but worth it.

Avoid this place, 2012-10-22
Captain: , Eugene OR (133)

Do yourself a favor and steer clear of DBY. Way too much of a hassle getting work done to make it worthwhile. They never stick to their schedules. Workers will start a job and then disappear for days. They take forever to order parts. And the quality of their work is variable; you have to watch them closely to make sure they are doing things properly.

Check other negtive reviews for more details. Our experience was similarly bad.

Many headaches here, 2012-10-21
Captain: , Muskegon, MI (2982)

We came here for our annual haul and bottom job on the recommendation of some friends. First, the guys who actually do the work here are great people, and most of them I really appreciated. HOWEVER, while in the yard, we never had consistent power on the boat. We ended up having to run two different cords, one of which never provided more than 90 volts, while the other one would not produce more than 2-3 AMPS with any reliability. My inquiries with management were met with a consistent mantra that it was because of other boaters running electric heaters, and there wasn't anything they could do about it....which sounds well and good, but it was 75 degrees (with no one running any heaters) during the day and I still didn't have any power! Then it started raining, and neither outlet would remain operative...which is not indicative of anything but bad wiring or plugs.

Be aware that coming to the Boatyard does NOT give you access to the services of the marina...you will have to pay for the separately.

On arrival, I spoke to my primary contact (middle management) about getting Yanmar parts (this is a Yanmar certified dealer/service center). His initial response was that I should go to West Marine...I said "For Yanmar parts?" He then said, "Oh, for Yanmar parts, just complete a work order so I have something to work with." Which I did, that very day...2 weeks later, I still didn't have any parts, and finally went elsewhere (online) to get what I needed.

Then I needed 2 six inch aluminum welds done, so I completed a work order (after finding out who the welder was, and checking with him that he could do what was needed). After leaving the work in the shop, and waiting several days with NOTHING happening, I finally called a local shop and got the welds done there (for only $40...I can only GUESS what I would have been charged here).

On arrival, I also asked for quotes on getting some repair work done on my cabin sole, and some gel coat repair. I told them at the outset that I would only be here about two weeks...it took a week before anyone stopped by the boat to look at what I needed done, and at that point I was told that they wouldn't have time to do what was needed.

I don't have any real ax to grind, but there is something SERIOUSLY wrong when I follow the procedures that THEY put in place in order to get work done, and nothing happens. I don't need, or want, to go somewhere that I have to end up begging them to do the work I need done.

I got most everything done that I needed, but it certainly wasn't due to anyone's help except mine. There is a definite disconnect between management and workers here, and it is the boater who suffers as a result. As other authors have noted, they seem to have gotten so focused on working on megayachts (that they can generate megabills for) that they have forgotten what they are in business for. We may come back to the Marina, but we won't be back to the boatyard.

Get your estimate in writing, 2012-08-02
Captain: , Sioux Falls (35)

Had our boat hauled for a month to have the boatyard do some simple repairs.. I asked that all work be estimated prior work being performed.... never got the estimate. The work did get done .. all in the last week prior to relaunch.. but I never did see an estimate. I had been warned by others ... get a price in writing... and they were right! The work was well done for the most part, although one port light that they rebedded due to a leak still leaks...

Never Again., 2012-02-15
Captain: , Charleston, SC (10)

While moving my Hinckley Competition 41 from Charleston SC to Oxford MD this past autumn, on our way up the Chesapeake, the bellows on our dripless shaft seal ruptured, resulting in our putting in to Deltaville Boatyard to have the seal replaced. These folks are slick, and present themselves as well trained (check out the number of certificates hanging on the office walls). I was subsequently presented with a list of 22 items that needed attention, about 20 of which were bogus make work designed to run the bill up. I had them replace the shaft seal, which included additional work relative to the shaft seal replacement that was not necessary.

The two items on the list that I had them attend to were 1)to replace the hose from the deck fill to the fuel tank as it had a slight amount of chafe on it, and it was easy to replace with the engine out of the boat, and 2) to re-strap two large wire bundles with metal strapping in accordance with ABYC standards.

Five weeks and $8,000 later (the estimate was substantially less), we left Deltaville Boatyard and sailed up the Bay to Oxford. Prior to hauling out in early December, I wanted to top up the fuel tank. While doing so, the bilge pump cycled as diesel fuel was being pumped into the bilge rather than the tank. This was a result of the new hose being routed such that hub on the forward end of the Vee Drive snagged and subsequently ruptured the newly installed hose. While the folks at Hinckley were cleaning this mess up, they noticed that there were two large wire bundles in the engine space that were hanging from broken nylon hangers, hangers that were suppose to be metal.

I am not going to say any more about the quality of the work. It speaks for itself. The charges assessed by Deltaville were completely out of line with the scope of the work. The Hinckley Yard charged me $319 to re-reoute the hose to its original placement and clean my bilge the first week in December. Today, I finally received a refund from Deltaville for the very reasonable charges assessed by Hinckley to clean up the mess, almost three months after the problems surfaced.

I suggest exercising great caution in dealing with this yard. I am a 25 year 100 ton captain and have worked with many yards ranging from the US Virgin Islands and throughout the US east coast as far north as Connecticut on many refit projects as well as the usual maintenance and repairs. This has been the least professional and disturbing yard experience I have ever had.

Outstanding Yard, 2011-10-29
Captain: , Cape Elizabeth (461)

During a prior rudder bearing replacement project, a New England yard had failed to address a flaws in a prior owner's cobbled up rudder packing fix which resulted in escalating leaking and then failed to reinstall the emergency tiller connection, both which came to light just before a scheduled offshore trip. In the midst of demands of their regular customers, Keith and his staff came up with inventive solutions to both problems, allowed us to work alongside them, and got it done on time.

Probably not the cheapest yard, but if you have a difficult problem which absolutely must be resolved correctly then this is the place.

Be Carefull, 2011-07-21
Captain: , Northport, Maine (80)

Yard is now after larger yacht business. NEVER get any work done without a full estimate in writing. While I was there, many boaters who were in the yard had many complaints about price gauging and "sticker shock" to final bills.

Also be aware that "estimators" go around yard and try to find work on boats in storage. Some of those suggestions made to boaters have been unessary repairs. I personally was approached for a new cutlass bearing job. My cutlass bearing was brand new with about 100 hours on it.

For yard work in the Deltaville area, Zimmerman is the place to go. They are not "cheap" for hourly rate but most of the boat owners have said the work was done correctly at far fewer man hours of other yards.

Terrific Knowledgeable Staff, 2011-06-28
Captain: , Deltaville, Va (91)

Keith Ruse is the owner of DBY and has a terrific staff on hand to take care of all of your needs. They are thorough, knowledgeable and very friendly. Most have been there a long time. All work is performed to ABYC standards.

If you're looking for some place to do some quick cheap work, DBY probably isn't for you. On the other hand, if you appreciate exceptional service, attention to detail and an assurance of your complete satisfaction, DBY

Excellent Services but not Cheap, 2011-05-18
Captain: , Hampton, VA (10)

I have no prior experience with being "stranded" in my B423, as I just purchased her last fall and this is my first summer on the Bay, but I found myself in this position a couple of weekends ago.

I was taking a lazy week aboard, sailing up the western shore from my homeport in Tidewater, when I became concerned with a strange screeching noise coming from the engine room - I thought it was a bearing in the alternator. I overnighted in Jackson Creek and in the morning the Boatyard crew was ready to evaluate my problem. It turned out that the vibration dampener had almost come undone (4 of the 6 hex screws which hold it to the flywheel had come completely out, and one of the remaining was finger tight). Needless to say, I dewcided to have this problem addressed on the spot, thus essentially becoming "stranded" there.

Now I will say that the mariina was very accomodating, as was the boatyard, and the work done on the boat was done very well, but I have to say it was not cheap. My final bill for 4 nights tied up at a slip was almost $400, and the repairs worked out to about $1000 per day.

Oh well, what they say is true I guess - BOAT - "Bust Out Another Thousand"

went in to deltaville to get est on new 2nd fuel tank - talked with deltaville boat yd and one other - the other said they would call us back and visit the boat - that was in jackson ck- the next day - never heard from them - BUT - Matt at deltaville boat yard DBY - wanted us to bring the boat to their dock so he could look at it - after viewing he began to explore alternatives then came out to boat to look again - he presented us with alternatives and when we agreed on one --we come back in and they built a mock up of tank as space was very odd shape - Matt gave us estimate for tank and installation - we left and came back in 3 weeks when tank was ready - DBY installed the tank, moved primary fuel filter and set up fueling so either tank can be used - very professional job and as for cost - the tank came in less than the quote and the rest was right on quote - no hidden fees -- these are extremely professional and knowledgable folks who really know what they are doing - they are busy so have a bit of patience as when you are as good as they are they do get a lot of business --
they are now working with water maker companies to find us the best deal possible

My experience with Deltaville Boat Yard is that they really take care of their customers and go overboard to do what is right.

Boat Yard Cooperation - Negative, 2010-05-25

In the survey/sale of a boat, the yard was very uncooperative in giving the customer repair estimates. Didn't want to take the time to go look at the problems. Once purchased the customer moved the boat to get the work done elsewhere. Ashley
