Reviews for Deaton Yacht Service
Great response time and quick repair, 2016-10-17
Captain: , Vero Beach, Fl (30)

We had been running our engine hard and motoring for two long days and the temperature gauge had been reading higher than normal. Checked strainer and was fine. Wary of doing much else in an anchorage with our old Kadey Krogen Manatee. Decided we better get some help to deal with issue and decided on Deaton Yacht Yard from Active Captain. We called at 10am on a Friday and asked if they could help us that afternoon. Spoke to Eric and he said they had room and could work on the problem that afternoon. We arrived around 2pm. Eric immediately came to boat to assess. Mechanic Gary was on the boat by 2:30 and by 3:30 problem was solved. We needed a new impeller which was what we were hoping. We were very impressed by their response and service and as well as their very reasonable price for parts, labor and dockage. We would definitely head to Deaton again for any other work we may need when in the area again. Added bonus was a loaner truck to make a run to Piggly Wiggly.

Helped us out!, 2016-07-01
Captain: , Little River SC (365)

We had an air conditioner fail on 4th of July weekend and although they could not help us, they referred us to someone else that was johnny on the spot and took care of our issue. It's rare when boatyards refer others. Thanks Deaton for your southern hospitality!

Dissatisfied , 2016-06-12
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (173)

The owners and staff are nice. The rigger who works there is very competent. Their other work quality and attention to detail is extremely poor, bordering on unsafe. Their lack of thoroughness resulted in serious contamination of our fuel system that resulted in the need for a full rebuild of our filtering system and some inconvenient engine stalls that resulted in some hull damage. Overall, I was very dissatisfied with the quality of the work and can't, in good conscience, recommend them to anyone. They did end up giving us a 15% refund after about six weeks of our documentation of the items that were an issue. That didn't prevent the lingering fuel system problems that haunted our cruising season. We would have preferred to pay full price and had the work done more thoroughly, since it took more than the refund to fix the items that weren't done right the first time and repair the damages.

Best Service & Location, 2016-05-22
Captain: , Eastport (30)

For the past five years en route south and coming back home, we've been stopping at Deaton's for work on our boat. From simple fixes to very complex systems, the staff has been remarkable. John Deaton knows everything about boats. The location is also excellent. The yard is a short walk to town and there is a courtesy car available if it's raining. We always recommend Deaton's to any boater with a draft that can get into Whitaker Creek.

It doesn't get any better, 2016-04-22
Captain: , Woodmere, NY (20)

Have only great things to say about Deaton's. Great customer service, warm and friendly folks.

Simply The Best, 2016-01-23
Captain: , McLean, VA (10)

We repowered here. These guys did an absolutely great job. Not everything went perfectly, but they always went above and beyond to make everything right. (In fact we had the owner, John Deaton working on our boat for several hours on a pleasant Sunday morning). It has been more then two years, and they still respond to my questions within 12 hours. Gary the service manager really knows his stuff, and it is clear that all the employees are treated well, because they all seem very happy to be there. I would sail far out of my way to have my diesel work done at Deatons.

Great experience on a bad day, 2015-10-11
Captain: , Longboat Key (110)

We had engine trouble going up the Neuse and called Deatons. They took us in right away, had the issue diagnosed in about 90 minutes and a planned worked out with us shortly after. They were great to work with and got us fixed the next day in spite of it being a complex repair. The mechanic (Steve) was exceptional and professional. He walked us through trouble shooting for the future and went above beyond the immediate problem to fix little things as well. All of the people at Deaton's we dealt with were great and they made an unpleasant situation better than we could have hoped. We thought the price was very reasonable for the work that was done. We would definitely stop at Deaton's again for work.

buyer beware, 2015-09-30
Captain: , new bern, nc (60)

** update
after waiting 4 months, with no feedback from deaton in spite of numerous phone calls and emails, we got a response from them indicating they accepted responsibility for the initiql failed repair and would reimburse me for the re-repair. they sent me a check for the part of the repair they felt responsible for.
i would not say i am satisfied, but believe the event is closed.
we had work done by deaton, installing a diaphragm on a sail drive. they were very professional doing the work, which was performed over a 2 day period. after i put the boat back in the water, i found that the repair was flawed, an o-ring was misinstalled and failed, causing water to leak into the oil. i imediately had the boat hauled and repaired at Jarrett Bay. after 2 months, Deaton has yet to acknowledge responsibility or take any steps to reimburse me for the repair caused by their mistake. unless you can verify their work yourself, i recommend you use a different company as they do not stand behind their work.

Crazy Good, 2015-08-17
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, FL (60)

Hey, if your boat has a Yanmar engine and you need repairs, do not even think about going anywhere else. This place is the best, John Deaton and his crew were exceptional, very friendly and they know what they are doing! Several places to visit and eat close by and with the courtesy car we could resupply on everything we needed for the next leg of our journey! Simply an incredable stay!

Got 5 star service without even stopping!!, 2015-06-17
Captain: , cruising (591)

We were anchored at Cape Lookout enjoying great weather except the heat index was high so we had genset running for AC). It suddenly stopped running so we checked the obvious; impeller, strainer clean and water coming in ok, fuel and filter were ok, checked ground wire, and shut off breaker. Called Deaton since we were heading north and Gary took our call and Deaton is a Northern Light dealer. We were planning on staying at River Dunes for a couple days and Gary said he could come to our boat but we would have drive time and $. He reviewed what we had checked and kindly talked me into checking the water supply again. I doubled checked the hose to the strainer and then jumped in with a mask and checked the through hull and there was a piece of plastic blocking 1/4 of the opening causing the auto shut off to trigger and kill the engine (just as Gary had predicted). I called back to thank Deaton and tell them I was not going to need their service. We have had friends break down here and got the same red carpet service. I hope the next time I have problems I am close to Deaton for their service!!

Eased our mind, 2015-04-23
Captain: , Knoxville, TN (10)

Our experience with Deaton's is limited, but good. We needed an expert opinion on the condition of our dripless shaft seal. We called Deaton's and sent Gary, the service manager, a photo. He came within half an hour and set our minds to ease. No charge for the service.

First class marine service, 2015-03-12
Captain: , Ottawa (303)

Just left the yard today (12-03-15) on our way south after 7 weeks at Deaton's. They treated us like family and did first class work from changing worn engine hoses, rebuilding the engine injector pump and installing new injector lines, replacing our upper/lower instrument panels and harnesses, installing a propane stove and stern thruster, popping in a new fridge, diagnosing electical issues and redoing the bottom paint. Deaton's allows you to help and do as much or as little as you wish. A great community spirit. They loaned us a vehicle to use anytime. They have very fair rates and their attention to detail is beyond reproach. Can't say enough about their cheerful and helpful staff. They made our stay a pleasure.

Excellent Mechanical Work, 2015-02-20
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (745)

We had developed a raw water leak on the Dismal Swamp Canal. One of the boaters rafted to us looked in our engine room and partially diagnosed the issue. We had a leak in the heat exchanger which was fixed by a mechanic from Edenton, NC while in Elizabeth City, NC. We thought we still had a leak in the raw water pump. Deaton was recommended by our first diagnostician. Eric, the Yanmar certified tech, found we did not have a bad r/w pump. Just a couple of loose hose clamps. Eric replaced the bad hose clamps, flushed and refilled our cooling system and fixed a couple of other issue with our engine. He did a great job. All of the Deaton employes we had contact with were very customer oriented. They cared about their work and appeared to do a great job. If I ever need any boat work and I am in the area Deaton will be my first choice.

Deaton's - Above & Beyond, 2015-01-20
Captain: , Grace Harbor River Dunes, NC (20)

If attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and communication are important to you then this is the last place you need to look while in the area. Care was taken to prevent tracking up the vessel while repairs were made. Additional work was always communicated for approval prior to execution. Fair prices on all parts consumed.

Great, inexpensive and very quick, 2015-01-04
Captain: , Santa Maria CV (415)

We hat to call TowBoat US because of a broken waterpump and were helped out very quickly. All our repair we could do on our own, we got the support and tools we needed and a lot inputs what to do. The team cares your problem to be done as soon as possible. They are great and the Marina as well. Thanks to Matt, Garry, Ashley, Rita (the nice german Lady in the office & her family), John, Tanya and all the rest of the great crew. Thats the place you want to end up with work to be done fast.
New washer and dryer, shower and little lounge and also an courtesy car is available. There are several shops arround to get everything you need.

The pizza at Silos Restaurant is very good an tuesday you get the second cheese pizza for free or any other pizza for 3,99$

A nice cafe in town is "The Bean"

Also the small shops in Oriental take care for what you need.
We can absolutely recommend that place.

Over and Above and Honest!!!, 2014-12-02
Captain: , Chapin, South Carolina (410)

Our ranger tug lost power in the midst of the Neuse River. Deatons sent Boat US immediately. The Boat US Captain was fantastic and was able to dock us smoothly at Deatons. Gary and the owner were great. They looked at our boat and discussed what needed to be done and they walked us thru the steps and we were able to repair the boat at the dock. They checked everything when we were done and we were on our way. They did not charge us for the time they spent with us or checking the boat. They also didn't charge us for the hookup to power or water. We were at the dock several hours. You could not have asked for a more personable, knowledgable or honest yard to take your boat!

the Best yard around!, 2014-03-28
Captain: , Oriental, NC (139)

we have had work done at Deatons for over 15 years. They are true professionals and both the owners and employees take great pride in their work. they have a very well stocked parts store, a small lounge, washing machines and a courtesy car.
we have cruised for years at a time and have never had problems with work that we had done at it when things are done right the first time.
I sometimes hear that they are "more expensive" than others, but we have compared prices and do not find this too be true. Maybe it is because they keep a nice, neat yard so it looks expensive!

Mumbo jumbo at Deaton, 2013-12-15
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1081)

We arrived at Deaton%u2019s at 1:00 PM, Thursday, Oct 24, with a failed Imtra windshield wiper motor. Deaton had a Vetus unit in stock that looked just like our motor and installed it, but it quickly overheated. Bad motor. Deaton%u2019s advised Imtra no longer made our motor, so ordered a second Vetus on Friday and it arrived Monday. Once installed it would not rotate, only hum. A second bad unit. Deaton%u2019s told us another Vetus unit was on the way, so we waited for that motor to arrive. Deaton%u2019s installed it late Tuesday, but the motor only ran at slow speed. A third bad motor.

At 8:30 AM, Wednesday, Oct 30, I called Imtra in New Bedford, MA, and learned they had 164 exact replacement motors in stock! Deaton ordered one overnight shipped and it arrived Thursday, Oct 31, at 10:30 AM. Once installed that afternoon it ran fast and cool. Success. It was late so we left Friday morning.

Deaton did not charge me for three failed Vetus motors, associated shipping and miscellaneous butt connectors, and two of the four installs, but did charge me for the third install of the slow motor despite my protests. Deaton also charged me five days live aboard fees. Had the parts department done the same five minutes of minimal research that I did with Imtra we would have left Monday afternoon and been on our way. Finally, to add insult to injury, I had to scrub the heck out of the white deck over the forward cabin outside the windshield because one of Deaton's workers wore black carbon sole sneakers.

When we left at 8:00 AM, Friday, Nov 1, Gary from Deaton spoke with us at the dock and helped us shove off. Five minutes later I ran aground dead center in the Whittaker Creek Channel and I draw only 4' draft. Gary came out and pulled us off to the red side and told us to hug red as we left. Fortunately, we sustained no damage, but why didn't he mention to us to stay red before we shoved off since he is the TowBoat operator?!?!

Total cost to replace the windshield moter was nearly $700. Ridiculous. My subsequent email to John Deaton requesting reconsideration brought silence. We will not be back.

Worked above and beyond to get us back underway, 2013-11-06
Captain: , Annapolis, Maryland (88)

Our first trip south and we developed a fuel leak on both injection pumps. After having a couple of mechanics look at it the consensus was that the injections pumps needed to come off and sent out to be fixed. Tried to continue manage the problem without fixing it until we got to Oriental NC when I decided that we'd just have to bite the bullet and get the taken care of.
Gary at Deaton Yacht service looked at it and suggested that we try to fix it in place before going to the extreme of pulling the pumps. He managed to fix the problem in a couple of hours and get us back underway saving us about two weeks of down time.
I would trust these guys with any maintenance issue anytime.
Thanks, Deaton Yacht service.

Great Yard, Great People, 2013-06-07
Captain: , Palm Coast, FL (20)

Fantastic, ver professional work, facilities, people! My "new best" yard anywhere in this part of NC. I'll not hesitate to return and will go out of my way to have future work accomplished here (Need a 10-star catagory to do them justice.) USM Captain, 50 Ton Master.

Good boatyard, 2012-11-14
Captain: , Oriental, NC (90)

This is a good yard for boat repair or work. They recommissioned the 34 foot cutter we bought in Idaho. The Tow Boat US franchise is located here as well.

Wonderful service, 2012-10-18
Captain: , Toronto (40)

We had a fuel leak which, at the time, did not seem too serious, however we decided to stop and have a professional investigate. We called on the phone, and even though the Yard was busy, and they could make no promises, we were welcomed in on Tuesday. It is now Thursday night, and we are "good to go". The issue was worse than we thought once John Deaton got in to take a look. The leak had compromised some coolant hoses, so not only was the offending clamp and hose replaced, John looked after the cooling hoses as well. In the process, he investigated both engines, and made some other minor, but preventive, improvements, and patiently talked us through everything he had done, observed and noted for future service. He, and the members of his company have gone above and beyond to help us and get us back on our journey. Thank you!

Absolute BEST work we've ever had in 15 years of boat ownership!!!, 2012-09-22
Captain: , Northport, MI (20)

First time we used this yard, we were towed in when our v-drive sheared off due to bad alignment. Even though we (obviously) hadn't scheduled this work, they were prompt, and very knowledgeable. Also courteous and small-town welcoming. Prices were very reasonable and work was well done. Smart professional touches, like the owner photographing our hull while we were hauled and annotating our file for future reference, had us planning to come back. Last spring we scheduled to have them do the 1000-hr service on our Yanmar, and attend to some other issues we were having. Gary the mechanic practically spent the day giving us a personal Yanmar-maintenance seminar while he worked on the engine and did sea trials. They found and fixed an annoying squeak in the rudder that neither we nor any other yard we'd visited had been able to diagnose. Eric spent a lot of time coming up with creative solutiions to an upgrade we were contemplating for our diesel heater. All in all, we were there about a week, not charged for the slip and a courtesy car was available. Now they are just about our first choice for work whenever we can arrange it to coincide with the spring/fall migration.

Deaton's Yacht Service, 2012-08-01
Captain: , Grand Island, NE (240)

Deaton's personnel were professional / courteous / and always communicated (for authorization) following evaluation before proceeding with service. I appreciated their attention to detail and cleanliness. s/v 'Someday' was well cared for.

Solid work, 2012-06-15
Captain: , New Bern (318)

Needed a new exhaust mixer for my Yanmar. Stopped in without appointment with the disassembled current system and a new mixer, which I had ordered online. They disassembled the old system (exhaust elbow, valve, mixing elbow), sandblasted and primed the exhaust elbow, assembled the new mixing elbow and re-twined the valve's fiberglass cloth for a total of $40. At one point had 3 people looking at it during the course of the hour I was there, including the owner who came by and confirmed that the current exhaust elbow was still serviceable.

Solid work.

Brought it back to the boat and did the rest myself.

I love this place!, 2012-06-07
Captain: , Middle River, MD (354)

Stopped at Deatons for help with a fuel pump leak. I came in contact with 5 or 6 people the during my short stays (one headed south and again returning north a few days later). Every single person was very friendly and helpful - especially Tanya in parts and Gary the mechanic. They helped me troubleshoot my pump issue and ordered a new pump. I stopped there on my way back north, the pump came in. They offered to let me stay in a slip overnight but I got the pump installed and got going. The facility was very clean and neat - I would not hesitate to have them work on my boat.

True Professionals, 2012-05-08
Captain: , Saint Michaels (300)

Deaton's people are competent and friendly. We thru a fan belt on a very rough trip down the Neusse. I sailed to a place I could anchor and called Towboat US which came from Deaton's. Matt towed us to a dock and helped me finish the installation of the a new belt. On another trip they did repairs very nicely -- good quality work. I would trust them to do anything.

Full service repairs, 2011-12-01
Captain: , Lewis Creek, Md (1214)

I have been having generator problems and a small colision with branch in Dismal Swamp. They took care of it with speed and good work

Emergency Stop, 2011-11-30
Captain: , Sodus Point, NY (678)

Our mast snapped in the Neuse River just 3 miles out from Oriental. Once we had it tied off, I jumped on AC to see where to take our broken boat. Deaton had the best reviews. I can see why. They were waiting for us at the travel lift dock and immediately went to work on removing the broken spare and boom so we could enjoy our evening. The next morning, they removed the remaining piece and we tied to a dock for 2 weeks of the insurance dance and estimates. I can see why everyone stops here when things are at their worst. It was a truly an exceptional experience during a trying one. Eric, Buddy and Wag listened to our concerns and helped us make sound decisions on what to do next. I would stop here, not only for any repairs or maintenance, but also just to say hi. Only advice, if you draft 5.5' or more, is call ahead on the best route in the channel. We bumped on the way in, but no problems coming out, Stay to the red side and remain around 30' away from the greens as you turn port towards Deaton.

Above and Beyond Our expectations, 2011-11-10
Captain: , Stuart, FL (167)

After hitting a submerged log on the Alligator River, this was the recommended yard for haulout and repairs. John Deaton and his staff provided professional, expert repairs in a timely fashion and managed to do so under budget. Great folks, who make you feel they care as much about your boat as you do yourself! Nice new shower and laundry and a very short walk into town for supplies and restaurants. Really surpassed any other expereince we have had in our 30 years of boating!

Captain: , Whitfield Estates, Sarasota, FL (928)

We were towed in because of a major oil leak. They found that the after market banjo bolt in the base of the oil pan in our Yanmar 6LPA-STP, 315 hp diesel engine had rusted through. They had the bolt in stock but because of the extensive corrosion on the dip stick tube that it attached to the bottom of the oil pan we had to wait 24 hours for it to be overnighted from their supplier. They had two excellent mechanics, who knew more about Albins than I do and I have owned the boat 10 years. They put the boat on their lift and drained the bilge and cleaned it. They fixed the stuffing box by repacking it with gortex. Before this we were leaking a gallon of sea water into the bilge every hour at the end of a 12 hour run. We would retighten the stuffing box every night. After they fixed it we ran another 1,100 miles with no problems. Also, they added three gallons of oil to bring the level back to full and after 1,100 miles of running the oil is still clear. My starter relay had gone bad and they found this problem too. They encourage you to have things fixed right and not just patched up.

Not cheap, but excellant work., 2011-02-21
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (521)

Once you get into the place, the entrance channel can be a challenge, especially in a southwest wind, you will find a well sheltered area. All of the people are friendly and easy to work with. They can handle just about any repair project. They allow you to do any portion of the work that you want and do what you do not want to tackel for you.

This is basically a repair and maintenance yard. Facilities are limited. There is no fuel or food and it is a long walk into the town of Oriental. Cruisers looking for overnight tie ups are better off elsewhere.

Great Service, 2010-11-20
Captain: , Muskegon, Michigan (10)

We pulled into Deaton's with a broken mast and damaged front roller furler. Although we hadn't decided what to do - Deaton's willingness to allow us to work on the mast and assist when needed convinced us to rebuild the mast in their yard. They provided transportation, when needed. Karen and John were very supportive and their staff knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend Deatons if you need quality service done.

Deaton Yacht Service Review, 2010-07-21
Captain: , Oriental, NC (130)

We recently had a lot of work done at Deaton's. I did a lot of it myself, and the crew at Deaton's did a lot too. I found them to be very professional and honest. I was happy to see that they were as particular about my boat as I am. I trust them 100%. They made a tiny mistake. When they found that this had happened, they took care of it immediately and without hesitation. John, Buddy, Wes and Wag were great to work with. I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting high quality work done on their boat. I will return there next time I need something.

Compitent Service, 2010-02-23
Captain: , Memphis TN (977)

In May 2008 had them do service in a slip at Oriental marinia and then had the boat pulled and had a new transponder installed. They were professional and reasonably priced. I made it inot there faciilty with a DeFever 49 with a draft of just under 5'. Ask for their entrance instructions.

Second opinion, 2007-02-01
Captain: , Minnesott Beach NC (81)

Deaton family has opperated this busness for all the 15 years I have lived in the area. They are compadent, professional
and hourly rate is competive. Work done has never needed a redoing.

Beware, 2007-01-19
Captain: , New Bern, NC (102)

In my personal experience and opinion, this complete repair facility gouges its customers. Those who have a positive view have two things in common: lots of money and not much knowlege. Go to Sailcraft next door - an ethical outfit. They handle power boats too.
