Reviews for DeTour Marina and Harbor of Refuge
Great marina in every way but their internet, 2016-08-06
Captain: , St. Joseph, MI (814)

I would give this marina five stars, if they would fix their internet service. I really needed it (teaching an online class) and it wouldn't work worth spit. I was berthed within spitting distance of the dockmaster's shack where the router lives and it wouldn't work. They suggested I sit at the door of the shack; it wouldn't work.

Otherwise, a great marina: great docks, great bath and shower facilities, fuel, pump out, electricity, water, great staff, everything is superb. Except that darn internet.

Convenient and Friendly, 2016-07-29
Captain: , Ashland, wi (120)

They've everything you will need. The wifi is best by the fuel dock office.
Groceries and other stuff within a short walking distance.

very nice marina and town, 2015-09-06
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (780)

new marina with excellent modern facilities and a great, helpful staff. town had a decent grocery, hardware store and restaurants within a few blocks. good location for springboarding to mackinac area the next day.

good stop after checking into USA, 2015-08-26
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1663)

Stopped here after checking in at Drummond Island. Better protected than Drummond, newer Marina in a nice small town. Loaner bikes. Drummond was a more park like setting but more isolated both are good choices.
This is a standard new State of Mich Marina, very nice and well run. Several good restaurants in town.

Great marina -- very quiet town, 2015-08-11
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

So the marina is very nice. Easy in, great protection, good docks and facilities. The only slight negative is the town isn't really a town. But if you're looking for a nice safe overnight -- this is your place.

Great location and service, 2015-08-09
Captain: , Pittsburgh (513)

We stopped to top off the tanks before heading to Canadian ports and were so pleased with the staff and facilities ended up staying the night. A good experience however if you need Internet ( and we all seem to now) you have to take your computer, tablet, phone etc to the fuel dock to get a signal.

Entry Very Confusing, 2015-07-11
Captain: , Vandalia, Ohio (168)

On the Loop--first time here. Stopped for 7/4/15 fireworks and entertainment. I am ultimately to blame since I failed to read Active Captain reviews--that I do almost always--so when I became confused when entering- I called harbor and asked the young girl if I was to honor all the greens---yes was the answer--wrong--rocks!. Keep red on break wall to starboard on entry and all those shallow water markers to you port. The last green and red on port is for the launch ramp on your far port,. Sounds simple--but I screwed up, but being male I have to share blame with the dock girl. Great stop, nice marina, town and restaurants.
Next day I talked to neighbor boater in Mackinaw City that did the rock routine too. Maybe the harbor should address issue and keep us from having to call Sheplers Marine for repair services.

Stopped here Multiple Times, 2014-12-27
Captain: , Milwaukee WI (547)

2014 was the third year we stopped to/from the North Channel. The first year we had to come in under sail to the old dock system - and the dock hands did a great job greeting us. Now we easier enter the harbor and dock at the beautiful new facility. And the staff is still as good.

Marina facilities are great as are most Michigan DNR run sites. Grills and picnic tables are available both in the open and under a shelter. One year there was a band concert on the hill between the marina and the road so we got free entertainment.

The Mainsail restaurant offers good food. ice cream and bar service. Check out the decor in the bathrooms.

The IGA is in walking distance with good stock of supplies. There is a marine supply store slightly further up the main street with charts and fishing gear, as well as DeTour sourvenirs.

The bonus is watching the Lakers on their way to/from the Soo.

Great marina on return from Canada, 2014-09-09
Captain: , Fort Myers Beach, FL (361)

After checking through customs on Drummond Island we are pleased we made the short trip here.
Beautiful new marina with all well maintained amenities. It had everything we needed.
Viewing the occasional passing ships was interesting.

beautiful marina, 2014-09-07
Captain: , Naples, FL (1096)

Entrance was tricky. You need to ignore the second red and green markers that are for the ramp. Recommendation: please deep clean and regularly scrub the restrooms.

Village is modest but we found local IGA could stock up refrigerator. The gift store Timberdoodle is owned by four retired women and is full of neat and practical gifts seen in a long time.

Super Nice Docks! , 2014-08-30
Captain: , Grand Haven, Michigan (200)

Brand new sturdy docks. Nice grocery. 2 bars/restaurant/ice cream within easy walking distance. We tucked in here due to bad weather, it was plenty protected in a severe t-storm, dock staff was very helpful. Clean showers & restrooms.

Beautiful new docks, 2014-08-27
Captain: , Big Torch Key, FL (1956)

Great new docks to accommodate most all sizes of cruising boats. Completely protected harbor to wait out any blow out on Lake Huron. Fuel does seem to be priced higher than all the other state docks in the area, but if you are headed to Canada, fill up as it is cheaper than any you will find there.

Great, new docks & shore facility, 2014-08-11
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6425)

New, wide docks, lots of room at fuel dock. Restrooms/showers very clean. Restaurant, grocery store only a couple of blocks away. Coming from Canada, we called in to US Customs and did not even stop at Drummond.

Great Stop to Jump Onto Lake Huron, 2014-08-09
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1380)

8-9-14. This marina is immaculate and brand new in every area. Our 65 ft MT layed up nicely against the post on the big boat fixed docks. Floating docks, no posts. Huge cleats as well. Wide finger piers and very wide docks. Staff very helpful. Watch the Big Ships go by in the DeTour Passage This is the place to get any early start right onto Lake Huron. Why stay at Drummond Is. Yacht Haven when you can stary at De Tour Harbor Marina.

Great marina, 2014-08-07
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (986)

Brand new docks & really friendly dock hands. Not much of a town, but grocery, liquor, and good restaurant close by

Excellent stop, 2014-08-06
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1897)

This marina is only a year old and therefore in excellent condition with wide docks, wide slips and super clean.
The staff are some of the best we have seen they are proficient and work very well together both fueling docking and signing us in. They also know how to clear the line and work a boat into its slip.
DeTour is a neat little town and this whole area is definitely a place could spend the whole summer.

Good Michigan Marina, 2014-07-30
Captain: , Tarpon Springs (983)

Stopped in for two nights after clearing Customs at Drummond Island. Clean, modern and efficient with a long fuel dock on the East side. On the late approach there is a red/green pair of boueys just South of the red on the end of the breakwater. These you honor. There is another, slightly smaller pair to the left and just beyond these - they are for the boat ramp and must be ignored. Some boats have apparently not done so. The IGA supermarket 500 yards South on Ontario Street is well stocked.

Really nice!, 2014-07-13
Captain: , Montague, MI (140)

We stayed here on the way back from the Soo, very nice place! Very helpful staff and small town has most everything including groceries and hardware store. Marina is new with great docks and great scenery with the ships passing by! We will be coming back.

Best Michigan marina we has seen since Cedar Point, 2014-05-30
Captain: , Milwaukee (651)

This is a top notch marina. Completely redone last year. Fuel dock has 3 sets of pumps, so fueling is quick and easy. With the purchase of gas, you can dock for free to go into town and eat or shop. The Detour Inn is a bar with great breakfast.

Nice Place of Refuge, 2013-10-16
Captain: , Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH (300)

We had depth and it was great to get back to US and some cell service.

Great Place to Start or End Your Trip, 2013-08-19
Captain: , Portage Indiana (503)

7/2012. Found marina and staff to be wonderful. Great little town with a front row seat for the big Lakers coming through. Can't wait to see new renovations!!

New updated docks and buildings, 2013-06-30
Captain: , n o n e (127)

Just reopened this weekend. Multy million dollar fixup. Lots of new docks ect. Still the same great people. Great place to start or end your North Channel trips.

Beautiful Marina, 2012-06-30
Captain: , Portage, IN (50)

Very nice marina with good depth and protection. I found the slips easy to get into and out of with lot of room.

Ditto past comments, 2012-02-28
Captain: , Olcott, NY (2536)

DeTour Village is a great small port.
Laundry is just outside the marina and the place is clean and the machines were newer in 2010.
Our bike made the town visit much easier.
They have an awesome little July 4th parade down mainstreet.
We have always enjoyed our visits to DeTour.

quiet calm, 2011-11-03
Captain: , Newport, R.I. (644)

Good place to stay before heading out to the North Channel.

Good Service in a well-protected harbor, 2011-10-15
Captain: , Algonac, MI (1659)

Staff was very helpful with our lines, check-in and directions. Marina is very well maintained. Showers and bathrooms clean, but a bit of a walk. Good place to provision before heading out to the North Channel.

Excellent marina, good breakwater., 2011-07-22
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Much calmer than Drummond in N/W winds. Small village ammenities. Good restaurantbar near marina for WIFI (wihch is one marina negative). Good dock staff.

myboatfruition, 2011-04-01
Captain: , Hammond Bay (1841)

Excellent marina with helpful and courteous staff. If your draft is 5 feet or more make sure they assign you a dock on the east side, away from the shore. Gas, diesel, and pump outs available. Good place to provision. Grocery store, hardware outdoor outfitters store within walking distance. Multiple restaurants within a short distance. Great place to enter the north channel but you can not clear customs either entering or exiting here. You have to do this at Drummond Island Yacht Haven where the owner is a customs agentl.

De Tour Marina, 2011-03-09
Captain: , Macataw, MI (435)

Stayed here for a night on the way up the St. Mary's in route to Lake Superior. Great people and the singalong group at the water front restaurant absolutely made the place worthwhile.

DeTour Marina, 2011-02-20
Captain: , Destin, FL (492)

State run marina with very helpful staff. Be patient when paying for fuel, etc.- CC approval is via a dial-up connection. Logical place to buy fuel and pump out when proceeding from Mackinac Is. or Les Cheneaux Islands to the North Channel. Fuel is cheaper than at Meldrum Bay.

BEATS DRUMMOND, 2010-12-03

Another nice michigan marina. Floating docks in good condition. Small town walking distance. Lots of freighters going by and its a good place to watch them.

Nice people, and good place to receive mail and prescriptions after Canada. Grocery store, liquor store, and hardware store.

Inexpensive Marina, $1 ft. in o9, shopping, liquor store, a couple resturants, gift shops, and a bar. Stayed here 2 days wating on weather.
Laundry , WiFi in town at coffee shop

nice facility, nothing to do ashore, 2009-07-13
Captain: , White Bear Lake, MN (102)

Great place to stop, but don't bother leaving the marina. No place to eat to speak of and the locals are a northern version of Mayberry.

DeTour Village Marina, 2009-06-13
Captain: , Clear Lake, TX (694)

Nice marina. Friendly people, clean showers & restrooms. Coin operated washer & dryer in both restrooms. Docks seemed nice to me but they are going to replace them next year. Docks are right on channel and you see freighters go by on their way to Sault Ste Marie.
Small town within w alking distance with auto parts, sporting goods/general store & restaurants.
