Reviews for Dataw Island Marina - Destroyed by Hurricane Matthew
Fantastic!, 2017-08-22
Captain: , Dallas Bluff, Georgia (80)

I can't remember the last time a restaurant imressed me this much! Though the marina is closed, and the "walk to" docks are really shallow, they sometimes allow folks to tie up at the outer docks. Well worth the dinghy trip in.

Nice Alternative to Beaufort, 2016-05-03
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (1234)

We were southbound from Charleston and could time the Wappoo bridge opening and high tide for White Point, but not for the Ashepoo Coosaw Cut further south on the ICW. We decided to take the alternate route south towards St Helena Sound for deep water. That put us on a favorable route to Dataw Island Marina that has gotten great reviews under new ownership.

We arrived on a Sunday, so didn't get to try their acclaimed restaurants, but their docks were solid, the staff very friendly and competent, and the facilities were very nice and clean.

But what impressed me the most was the fact that the dock master responded to a report of a section of someone's floating concrete dock adrift in the current on The Morgan River - going out, finding it, bringing it in and securing it. That shows their care for the safety of fellow boaters. Props to Dataw Marina for their actions. I would be happy to give them my business in the future.

Management response:
Thank you for posting you glorious 5 star review! The timing of your arrival at our dock coinciding with our Harbormaster leaving to retrieve the rogue floating dock just amplified the reason to retrieve it. It feels awfully good to be caught doing something right. Thanks for noticing and sharing with others. We hope your next visit is perhaps not as dramatic, but that you can stay with us longer to discover the beauty of Dataw Island.

Beautiful views and a very nice restaurant on site, 2016-02-04
Captain: , Hilton Head Island, SC (365)

I live and keep my boat on Hilton Head Island and this is a wonderful marina for a "weekend get away". David rates a "6" as a dockmaster and is helpful and upbeat. Yes the transients are on the face dock, great views of the environment, but with a bit of rocking in the fast current flows. It has never been an issue. The facilities are excellent, clean and well maintained. Sweetgrass restaurant on site is now under a new chef anf the dinners are excellent. Actually celebrated New Years eve 2015/2016 there and it was perfect.

Fueled up. No Boat US discount, 2015-11-29
Captain: , South Freeport (750)

Only Stopped to take on fuel. Easy. Person who assisted us was very helpful and pleasant.

However, they Do Not provide a Boat US discount as stated. This should be corrected

Management response:
First, I want to say "Thank you" for taking the time to review our marina. For years our "Specials" have been the same for all memberships that we are affiliated with. The discount that we offer thru Boat US is the same as what we offer with Active Captain. Our fuel discount is $.10/per gal with 100+gal. We do not offer a discount beyond that with Boat US. I'm sorry if that was not communicated effectively.

A Beautiful Spot, 2015-10-26
Captain: , MV Red Head (3106)

This was our first time visiting Dataw Island Marina and what a special place. The facilities are beautiful and there is so much to do! We took advantage of the free bikes and toured the island. It's about 3 miles around. There are wide paths to walk or ride that wind through lovely streets. A must stop is the Tabby Ruins, the remains of an old plantation located at the clubhouse. You can also rent a golf cart to take the tour or visit the clubhouse and other amenities that are available.

There is access to golf, tennis, swimming and other services at the clubhouse, as well as restaurants.

We found everyone we met, whether at the marina or as we rode around the island, to be very friendly and welcoming.

The canine crew enjoyed a romp in the field next to the playground and a long walk along the paths. And a treat from the office!

Add beautiful scenery and haul out and repairs available right on site and this is a stop you need to make.

We found access with our 6 foot draft to be very easy and straightforward. Whether coming in from offshore through the deep and well marked inlet or coming right off the ICW, it is an easy stop for a night but you'll really want to stay a spell and enjoy all it has to offer.

Great Place, 2015-07-25
Captain: , North Charleston, SC (752)

We stopped on our way from Savannah to Charleston and spent two nights. The docks are sturdy, the staff is helpful and friendly, the fuel (diesel) price is reasonable and the restaurant is excellent.

One of the marina staff drove us to the golf club where we were able to rent a golf cart for the day and see the island and a connected uninhabited island.

We we will return, probably with others from our marina and enjoy the facilities.

We stopped here again in June 2015 because it was just too hot to anchor. We only spent one night but everything was as good as it was the first time we stayed.

Off the brsten path, 2015-06-04
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1244)

This is a very nice marina and well worth the five mile run from the ICW. Sturdy floating docks in good shape, with solid power. Restaurant at head of the dock. The marina is located inside a gated community with golf carts at the primary transport. No shopping near by. One negative is long fetch could make it rough in a storm. Strongly advise asking for slip on one of the inside floating docks.

Peaceful and Friendly , 2015-03-18
Captain: , Cape Cod, MA (203)

Arranged to stop here after leaving Charleston around noon. Took about 4 hours. Well constructed and maintained docks, nice showers and laundry, and good restaurant (closed Wednesday). The island is gated so there are no codes or passwords. 30A service wasn't available at my dock so Dave the dock master lent me a 50A splitter. Bikes available if you want to explore island. Definite stop on our return.

We love it here!, 2014-03-24
Captain: , Oxford, MD (810)

We agree with all the previous comments except for those made by Chip about Marsh Harbor. This is our sixth visit. The marina staff couldn't be more accomodating. When we inquired about procuring a taxi to take us to rent a car, Rett put out a message on the community e-mail and several residents responded with offers for a ride. Marina Manager, David, and dock hand, Tad, couldn't be more helpful. When we needed to replace a bulb in our starboard nav light, David produced two for us "on the house"; why two? because if the starboard had just blown, the port side probably wouldn't be far behind. Restaurant is great, coffee bar and sundries, laundry and heads are all above the average for marinas we have visited on the ICW. We are sorry for Chip's bad experience with Marsh Harbor. We have enjoyed great service from Trisha. We hauled out at Dataw and left Santorini for two months this winter. Marsh Harbor staff are as others have said, competent, caring, on time and at great rates. We will return here again and again -- they make everyone feel like family. Only criticism (there has to be one). They used to have a courtesy car and wish they would do so again so that boaters could get to Publix, West Marine, etc.

Dataw Island Marina, 2014-03-03
Captain: , guilford CT (40)

dataw Island marina is quiet, well maintained and safe. staff is very helpful and prices are good
The restaurant is outstanding

I would have rated it higher, 2014-02-26
Captain: , morehead, city (40)

BUT, their affilation with marsh Harbor Boatyard brings their rating WAY down. The marina fokes are very nice. however the boat repair people are rude and in need of some customer service schooling. Use caution when using their services. was ripped off.

Dataw Island Marina, 2013-12-21
Captain: , Lake Burton, GA (150)

Left Broad Creek at Hilton Head, stopped here on the way to Charleston. Very nice staff, easy docking and competitive fuel prices. Clean and quiet, protected, very nice docks. Restaurant, showers, laundry etc. Would definitely stop here again.

A regular stop for us, 2013-07-01
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

People, facilities and docking, even in strong current, is easy to do on face dock. If winds are strong, or predicted to be strong, you may want to ask to dock inside floating docks. Monitoriing the VHF is spotty, so have your cell phone ready. The docks are in excellent shape. I do not know why the previous poster would say that. It appears they had an ax to grind.

Setting the Standard?, 2013-06-24
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (986)

6/17/13 The reviews and Dataw's website say "Setting the standard in marinas" - this "vision" was a far cry from our experience. Not sure how you hail these folks - only answer on 68. Had to call on phone to find this out. Three MV's arrived with what we thought were reservations after confirming arrivals 2 weeks prior. Our arrival was a surprise. Web site indicated "bikes, WI-FI". Nope...all bikes had flat tires and in disrepair...WI-FI never worked. Docks were in overall lousy condition with a constant raw sewage odor. Very poor lighting. Overall a disappointment for a marina that once was very nice that has been allowed to slip into disarray. On a good note- restaurant was very nice with great food.

this marina was a pleasant surprise, 2013-05-16
Captain: , New Bern, NC (171)

The only issue we have with this marina is the fact that the harbormaster goes home at 4pm, so no help getting into the dock after that time. We made out fine with assistance from some other boaters already at the long face dock.
After we arrived, everyone couldn't have been more welcoming. Facilities are great, with very nice showers and rest rooms. Good restaurant and bar, and coffee bar serving breakfast in the morning. We needed some service done on the engine, and a very knowledgable mechanic from the boatyard was at our dock waiting for us before we got back from the office. Very reasonable rates. We stayed another night - and will come back...

Sweet Grass Grill at Dataw Island Marina, 2013-04-23
Captain: , Tiverton, RI (60)

Just stopped at this outstanding marina and experienced a fantastic dinner at Sweet Grass Grill.
In the past the resturants at this marina were marginal at best. Not this one. The Sweet Grass Grill will keep us coming back to Dataw Island Marina. They are teamed up with the marina. With a two entre purchase you get a free bottle of house wine and in the morning there are muffins available.

Great over night or several days, 2013-03-26
Captain: , Callawassie Island, SC (20)

We like to go to Dataw Island Marina at least 4 times a year. It's about 6 to 7 hours cruising at 7.5 kt from our home (Callawassie Island).
Several minor problems: (1) They don't monitor Chan. 16 and sometimes it is very hard to contact them on Chan. 68. (2) In the off season Winter and early spring they close up shop at 16:00--there was no one to meet us when we arrived at 16:30. We had called ahead at 11:30 and left a message. They called back and confirmed our resevation. The next morning the dock manager was somewhat confused that we arrived the evening before--why the miss communication is the question. When we went in to pay in the morning after we arrived they did not charge us for 30 amp power.
Now that I have said the above, it's a great place to stay overnight -- super dog walk area, ok showers, SUPERB resturant "Sweetgrass" w/ a bottle of wine if you spend the night as a transiaent, and the most friendly people arround.

Good place to stay a night or two, 2013-02-13
Captain: , Pensacola, Fl. (136)

We stopped here 2-13-13 on our way south. We are new to boating and stay on the hook 95% of the time. We needed showers and to do laundry. We called ahead on the phone then hailed them on ch# 68 and there was two dock hands to help us tie up at the diesel pump. Don't stay overnight on the face dock, we were going too until the wind picked up, moved inside thier floating concrete docks to a nice quiet night. Two thumbs up

Enjoyed our stay here, 2012-12-21
Captain: , Bristol, RI (431)

Stayed here Dec 8, 2012. They did monitor channel 16 that day, but we always call on the phone if there is no response on the vhf. Lightly staffed, especially in the slow season. Tied up to face dock, which can get bumpy, but we don't mind. Bathrooms clean, nice tile showers, but they should have put a shelf or two in the shower stall. We took advantage of the free bicycles and pedaled around the island to the rins of the original plantation house. This marine is in a gated community and everyone we saw on our bike ride waved or said hi. Lots of wildlife here - we saw a flock of wood storks and a few alligators. Had a nice dinner at the restaurant on-site.

Call on CH 68!, 2012-12-11
Captain: , St. John, VI (90)

Please note that this marina does NOT monitor CH 16 AT ALL! We arrived at 2:00 on a Sat. afternoon & hailed the marina on CH 16, no response. I tried calling on the phone & got a message stating their hours (they were 'open'). Next we tried honking the horn but still no dock hand appeared. We prepared to dock ourselves in strong wind & current, but thankfully a young couple working on their boat at the dock came to lend a hand. Once we were secure, the dock hand ambled up saying "I knew you were coming, just not what time." I asked, since he was expecting us, had he not heard our horn or noticed us drive back & forth several times? He just laughed. While this is no laughing matter it should not deter you from visiting here as the marina itself lives up to the reviews. We met a great group of people at the docks & felt warmly welcomed by the friendliest folks since the Bahamas! Also enjoyed a lovely walk on the wooded paths & a delicious dinner at the restaurant. Just call on CH 68!

Great stop., 2012-11-17
Captain: , Ophelia, VA (849)

We realized that we would not make Beaufort, SC heading south and thanks to Active Captain, I found this marina with a great rating. We normally would not go that far off the ICW, but the first mate wanted power for the night as it was cold.

The marina was super, Sweetgrass Restaurant provided a great meal, and showers were first class. Secure gated community. We did find out that 2 markers are missing in the river, however, the river is wide and deep enough so we encountered no problem. Charts book says the markers are privately maintained, but dockhand said that the coast guard had been notified of the missing markers. Sounded like a conflict there.

We will stop again if passing through.

Great Stop-well woth the 3 miles off ICW, 2012-11-02
Captain: , Hollywood, MD (142)

Very friendly marina. Restaurant has fantastic food and atmosphere. Good stop for sailboat headed south after 0900 Wapoo Creek Bridge. Strong WIFI on face dock. One of our favorite marinsa.

Nice place to stop., 2012-07-21
Captain: , Sanford, Fl. (887)

This is our first stop here and we have really enjoyed it. They are running a pay for 2 days and get the third day free special. The Sweet Grass Restaurant has really good food at reasonable prices. We walked the bike path all around the island (4.3 miles according to our pedometers) it is really a nice place. Marina is friendly and in good condition. Easy docking on face dock.

Nice marina, 2012-07-15
Captain: , Little River, SC (443)

This is a really nice marina about 3 miles off the ICW. Excellent Sawgrass Restaurant with excellent food. Excellent crabcakes and wide menu. Marina staff is friendly and helpful. 500 foot face dock for easy access. Would definately stop again.

First Class Marina - Another Visit, 2012-05-26
Captain: , Charleston (105)

Below is my earlier posting. After another visit this week, it all remains correct. The food may even be better.

The restaurant, Sweetgrass, is open and has great service, very good food, and a delightful atmsophere.

We found everything to a very high standard. The private shower rooms are a real plus. The dock staff is very competent and they have to be with the current in the Morgan River. It is an excellent value and we plan to return.

Great Marina, 2012-05-22
Captain: , Grand Haven (470)

We planed to stay only one night, however tropical storm Alborto changed our mine. We found this to be a well protected marina.
Don't plan on any retail, but the marina had bikes that we used to tour the island--great ride!! The staff and the local resturant sold us on this stop.

Quiet stop, 2012-01-22
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (386)

We stayed here for 2 weeks prior to traveling north on ICW. All reviews are honest and accurate. In addition, Marsh Harbor Marina in Beaufort has expanded its boat yard services to Dataw Island Marina and can provide excellent help with repairs.

A few extra miles but worth it., 2011-12-17
Captain: , Red Lion, DE (712)

Stayed here 2011-12-16. All of the previous reviews are on the money with five stars. My only complaint was that the marina suffered a major power failure to the docks that morning but did not tell me that there was no power when I made arrangements to stay overnight. It wasn't told until we were tied up to the dock, (at 4:20 PM). Since we were having generator problems we sat without power until 8:20 PM. We were not charged for power and were told that our next stay would be free if we chose to stop there again - which we probably will.

nice marina, Great Restaurant, 2011-05-31
Captain: , n o n e (137)

Marina is in the process of building and upgrading. There will be a small store onsite by the end if the year. The SweetGrass restaurant is great !! We were there the day after the 3 day holiday weekend and the place was packed. Always a good sign. Helpful friendly staff. Easy access just south of the ICW. We will try to stop there on our way south this fall.

great stop, 2011-04-14
Captain: , Westport,Ma (710)

very nice marina in a gated community, with super helpful dockhands and great office staff. Excellent onsite Resturant (Sweetgrass) make reservations in advance as it is small and popular.

Off the beaten path, 2011-04-02
Captain: , New Orleans, LA (671)

We've stayed there twice; both times, we were the only transient vessel at the dock. Both times, we were treated like an honored guest. The facilities are spotless, and the on-site restaurant is excellent. This is the marina for a private island golf course community development, and it has a different feel from other nearby public marinas. As pointed out in the other reveiws, there's not much to do besides walk the golf courses and look at the river. We enjoyed the peace and quiet as a result.

Very Nice Marina, 2010-12-24
Captain: , Detroit, MI (160)

Very comfortable and clean marina. The staff was very helpful and nice. Clean and modern heads with hot showers! Onsite restaurant is good but very small. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely Area But Car Is Needed, 2010-12-01
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (326)

We spent several months here in '08. We liked walking the 'links' at off golf times (there are two courses on the island). The mechanics are excellent and dock staff is as well. To provision a car is essential. Current is strong, but the long face dock lets you hook up for a comfy any inexpensive evening. The restaurant is good and ships stores will tide you through. This is a super place to spend a day or so off the waterway with excellent cement docks and lovely folks to help out.

Excellent Service and Staff, 2009-11-09
Captain: , Northfield (39)

The staff was wonderful as we had made it in after 75MPH gusts in the river approach and lost our entire bimini. Conrad was especially helpful, driving us into townand assisting with everything we needed, The restaurant /bar had excellent food. Best fried shrimp, very clean laundry services and facilities. A marina not to miss.

Great Place to Stay or Visit, 2009-06-23
Captain: , Hattiesburg (36)

We have spent the Winter here and the entire staff is very friendly and most helpful. The ship's store has recently expanded and the entire marina is maintained to a high standard. Bicycles are available and free use to tour the beautiful surroundings of Dataw Island.
June 2009 update -- The restaurant on site is now reopened. The food is above average and they have a bar. The ship's store is also expanded with more food, boat stuff and deli sandwiches.

Good stop, 2009-05-13
Captain: , Carolina Beach, NC (391)

Stayed for 3 days while front blew through. Very friendly and helpful staff. Since we were staying through the front they put us inside where it was very protected for 20/25 kt winds. Nice atmosphere, beautiful setting, we look forward to our next visit. Only drawback is it is 3 to 4 miles off the ICW and too far to walk to anything not on the marina premises.

Beautiful facility, but isolated, 2008-11-20
Captain: , Sag Harbor (24)

Great docks, beautiful showers, gorgeous dockmaster's office, very friendly and helpful people who are determined to make your stay comfortable. Arrive with provisions onboard for dinner, though. No restaurant yet. Once the restaurant is open, if it's good, this will be a first-class stop if you don't mind the 3+ mi. detour off the waterway to get there.
