Reviews for Dark Harbor Boat Yard
Best ice on the coast of Maine, 2016-07-05
Captain: , Freeport (40)

If like us, you lack refrigeration, finding good quality ice is a tall order. Typical ice is nothing more than compressed snow and it melts quickly.

Dark Harbor Boatyard's ice is da bomb!! I generally go for the blocks, which seem to be frozen on site in battery boxes. The ice is so solid and clear that I swear you can read a newspaper through it. No compressed snow here.

Additionally, the shower and laundry facilities are good, and the staff is great. I don't know if the two Black Labs are still there, but they kept us entertained for a time while we were there.

Lots of moorings available, 2015-08-19
Captain: , Yarmouth, ME (192)

There were lots of moorings available here, so it it a good option. The showers and heads are clean, and there is a W&D also. There is a store for provisions about 1/2 mile away we were told, but we did not visit. A plus is that they recycle trash, which we wish more boatyards did.

Excellent Moorings, 2014-07-18
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (970)

This is the place to hang off a mooring if you have run out of anchoring options, run into bad weather, or just need a break.

Big moorings are very widely spaced and ensure a comfortable and secure night. A few small boats come and go to or from the boatyard, but things are mostly quiet.

Enjoy stretching your legs on 700 acre island or just chill out.

Very pleasant on the mooring, 2013-08-08
Captain: , New Castle, NH PGI, Florida (310)

We picked up a mooring here after being unable to anchor off Warren Island. There were several available, so we chose one just off the dock, which is the best protection from wakes out in the main Gilkey Harbor. We arrived after 5:00 so nobody was around; the showers and laundry were accessible but we didn't use them. We have been to 700 acre island before, and there are miles of unpaved roads to walk and an interesting old chapel not far from the marina.

Great Place, but lot's of wakes, 2013-07-28
Captain: , Bristol, RI (139)

What a wonderful spot. Beautiful, well protected, and the staff are great. But be prepared to rock and roll from the wakes by all the boat transiting Gilkey Harbor and by the yard's work boat

Great Service, 2012-09-05
Captain: , Wolfeboro Falls (40)

After numerous attempts to get our ourboard fixed in the Rockland area, Dave had the parts and got it done in about an hour. What a great staff, we'll make this a regular stop from now on when we are in Maine.

Best local jam anywhere, 2012-07-24
Captain: , Milford CT (648)

This is mainly a boatyard, a good boatyard that will go out of thier way to help. The ships store has some nice jams and shirts, hats etc. the island has dirt roads and no real destinations but we like the people and the safety of the mooring field.
Sorry to say , no more jam. the cook is 85 yrs old.
Moorings $30 still a great yard.

Congenial Facility, 2011-09-21
Captain: , Deer Isle, Maine (514)

I stopped here in mid-September to fuel up and take a mooring for the night. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. The showers and bathrooms were clean and functional. The mooring was well cove was well-protected from the southwesterly wind that began to blow over night. Spent an hour or so exploring the dirt-track main "road" of the island and saw nothing but woods and fields. Quite a contrast to Islesboro Island!

Moorings, 2007-02-11
Captain: , Georgetown, Maine (144)

Moorings avail for a reasonable fee. Very well protected. Often windjammers anchor nearby.
