Reviews for Custom Yacht Service
A gem - with narrow focus, 2016-10-27
Captain: , North Carolina (10)

There this morning, for the first time. Could not have been nicer. Tied the dinghy up there to walk into Irvington -- one of the few, perhaps the only place, allowing dinghies to do this in this area. John Friday, the owner, and still a young man, has been in business here for 24 years. Judging from the boats in the yard and from talking to John, this is a first-rate boat yard. No bar, no restaurants, no (or little) transient docking, no fuel dock. But more than half the boats on land bore local hailing ports, and the rest were from this general part of the world. Most boats were quite classy, some even classic, with lots of teak and other upper-end accoutrements. John is not bashful about staking out his yard's claim to more high-end work, and my talks with several of his workers, while I was walking around the yard, confirmed that. These were serious career guys who could look you in the eye and get into deep details about their work with little effort. To top it all off, John lets owners do their own work here - except spray-paining bottoms. The previous comment about having a clear scope of work and clear pricing is always excellent advice. Bargain hunters may be disappointed here. But, from all the signs I could see, if you want a job done once and done right, on a boat that scores high on both performance and looks, with down-to-earth folks to deal with, this place should be near the top of your list.

Friendly marine services, 2015-05-28

Custom Yacht Service in Irvington has done work on our vessel on several occasions. The relationship between performance expectations and invoiced price has varied considerably from "right on the money" to "you've got to be kidding."

Set performance specs, timeline, and firm estimate before commissioning work.

Attention to detail, 2014-05-20
Captain: , Carters Creek (10)

Just moved our boat to Carter's Creek from NC. Had painting, marine head, and electrical work done. Job was on time, well done, and $ on par with local competitors. We like the personal attention and will undoubtably return for maintainence.

Nice yard, nice people, 2014-03-19
Captain: , Virginia (50)

I do not agree that this yard is over priced. I had a substantial amount of work done here recently and thought the price was fair. I also did some work myself and they were very helpful to me, even loaning me some tools.

Perhaps the previous poster was there before John took over the yard.

If you are going into this yard make sure that your banker knows that there will be a very large withdrawel from your account to pay them.

Nice facility and friendly staff. No transient slips. We've not been here for service ourselves, but they have a good reputation. They have allowed us to dinghy in and go for a walk into town.
