Reviews for Cracker Boy Boat Works - Riviera Beach
Total disregard for customers' property, 2016-02-27
Captain: , United States (2386)

We walked through the yard to scope it out for some work we need done (haulout, bottom, paint touchup, etc.) while staying next door at RBM for a month. Before we made a decision on yard work, an incident occurred convincing us to keep well clear.

We responded to an AIS "Man Overboard" alert that we eventually discovered was coming from this yard, starting late at night. After satisfying ourselves that it was not an injured person who set off a beacon (on land) and speaking with the on-site security, I returned the following day to speak with the office about it (the alarm was still going off, one message every four minutes).

After a few minutes in the yard I could tell it was coming from a very expensive (and award-winning) Cookson 50 racing sailboat on the hard. Since these MOB alarms are immersion-activated, I suggested to the yard office that some compartment on the vessel might be filling with water (we'd just had a very large rainstorm) and that they should notify the absentee owner.

Their response? Literally this: "We can't possibly call every customer any time an alarm goes off on their boat."

So take note: if you leave your boat here unattended, and an alarm goes off, the YARD WILL DO NOTHING. Might as well just disconnect them all, so they don't run your battery down.

(Postscript: I tracked down the attorney for the LLC that holds title to the boat, in Rhode Island, and informed him of the situation. The alarms stopped about an hour later.)

Great customer service, very knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices. Will return here whenever we need a haul or need work done.

Great yard, 2014-11-12
Captain: , Fort Pierce City Marina, FL (420)

We had our 48' boat at the yard a number of times in 2014 for some pretty major repairs - new 100g fuel tank, repaired props, replaced drive shaft, etc. Oscar & crew are competent and very attentive in spite of their busy yard. They were always willing to either help or point me to the right people to get the job done. The ladies in the supply shop were always kind and helpful. Thank you!

Horrible Customer Service for cruisers, 2014-09-19
Captain: , Boca Raton (50)

Coming from the great lakes, this boat yard clearly does not appreciate the business that comes from cruisers or better said boats under 40'. Upon checking out (I had my 37.7' there for approx a year) I and asked for some minor thing that I needed and is irrelavent and never having any smiles at this place, mentioned "I am spending over $15,000!"... to my surprise the answer was "We have bills over $50,000!". Leaving the money issue aside... what kind of an attitute is that? The ladie that manages the place is horrible. Always has been and will never change. I pitty the owner who still employs this terrible employee! BAD BAD BAD people skills. She shouldn't have a job!

Do it yourself, 2014-06-29
Captain: , San Diego (300)

Resonable rates on haul outs, about 8.00 a foot. lots of marine supply stores nearby. knowledable staff if you have questions.

Competent but!, 2014-05-29
Captain: , Oregon (60)

As newbies to the yard experience, I was not impressed with assistance. All work was done competently and as scheduled. No smiles could be found on any staff and only questions answered, no helpful hints or suggestions. A holding tank valve could have been fixed sooner if help in identifying the problem rather than just complaining about the smell and insisting on pump out. Could have solved problem not just the symptom. Will not return for future work.

Good boatyard, 2014-03-31
Captain: , Annapols Md (20)

Had problems after wrapping line around prop and hauled out at Cracker Boy to fix the damage. Staff very competent and helpful in scheduling a timely haul out and in maneuvering boat into slip despite current. Oscar, the yard manager, and Bill were really good. It is a very busy yard, but well managed. Clean showers and restrooms. It is a do it yourself yard and there are a variety of marine services available nearby.

Great service, 2012-05-20
Captain: , Kingston, Ontario (1880)

Lots a blade of our prop coming across the gulf, sailed in to anchorage, towed into Cracker Boys. Very professional and yet friendly staff. Haul out crew were amazing, very helpful. Used Eagle Eye to resolve prop and cutless bearing issue , excellent work (pricey) and very accomodating with good advice. If broken this is THE place to get fixed IMHO.

A rare find, 2012-04-14
Captain: , Nyack, NY (556)

We had multiple recommendations to use Cracker Boys. We needed our engine rebuilt and they found the contractors who could do what we needed. We stayed on the boat for seven weeks while the work was done, and did our own bottom work. The staff made a difficult time less so. See other reviews. U.S. Customs is across the street. Bathrooms and showers are clean and neat, Lots of hardware on hand, and Boat Owners Warehouse is nearby.

Very Friendly and helpful. Good STORE for Marine supplies, 2012-03-20
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (203)

We had our propeller shaft come out due to rope, and they were able to get us in with the coordination with TowBoat US. Very good marine store. You can do your own work, or they have a great list of professionals to help. They service many expensive and large yachts, but welcome small ones too.

Cracker Boy, 2012-03-15
Captain: , Toronto (40)

Had the boat lifted and prepared for trucking back to Toronto. Excellent yard with experienced and curteous staff. Power and Water included in the daily rate. $1.00 ft per day.
Stayed on the boat. Not much else in area. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy. We would go back in a heartbeat.

I love Cracker Boy Boat Works, 2011-07-30
Captain: , West Palm Beach (111)

This is a great yard particularly if you are a do-it-yourselfer. We do all our own work. They rented us a sander attached to the shop vac for a very reasonable price--I wish all yards did this and allowed more of us to do our own bottoms. The bathroom was clean. The store well-stocked. We brought everything ourselves and all that was required was that we buy the bottom paint from them which I thought was fair.

The current is quite formidable (sideways to the travel lift slip) so plan accordingly, Oscar the foreman is extremely knowledgeable and helpful--very professional.

The neighborhood is NOT safe--plan to get a rental car dropped off or take taxis everywhere. There is a Boat Owners warehouse within a mile--but I don't recommend that you walk it. The only exception would be to walk to the Tikki Grill for lunch next door at the Riviera Beach Marina.

When you are done you can anchor in the lagoon and use the Riviera Beach marina dinghy dock until you are ready to leave--but it's $10 a day--

Good Yard, Contractors Iffy, 2011-01-05
Captain: , Panama City, Florida (511)

We had a good experience with the yard. We were here for a bottom job. Oscar is the yard manager and he and his crew did a fine job on the bottom. The office staff was friendly. Clean showers and bathrooms so you can easily stay onboard during the haulout, but the neighborhood is a little rough. There is security at night.

The yard allows do-it-yourself or you can choose from a list of contractors that are available. We used Blake to compound and wax the topsides and he did a great job. We hired Alan to rework the keel to hull joint and he did a crummy job, then copped an attitude. I would never let him work on my boat again.

So four stars for the yard, but you're on your own with the contractors.
