Reviews for Cooper River Marina
Friendly and helpful, 2015-06-15
Captain: , Norfolk Va (40)

I was here in 2014 for 9 months in 2014 and got to know the staff very well, Matt, the Harbormaster is a First class guy who runs a tight ship. The WiFi is working fine at the transient dock, Very clean facility. There was a boating accident involving a speed boat on the river a couple of days ago and I was impressed by the diligency of the staff and especially Austin who is a certified ist responder to revive an injured woman before the EMT arrived.

Great facilities and staff!, 2015-04-11
Captain: , Charleston (10)

Super friendly staff - always helpful. Clean and well maintained facilites. Update - wifi is now working! Strong outgoing current w large ship traffic - bring your large fenders and stout dock lines. A few miles to town.

Marina to Stay with Reasonable Price, 2015-02-02
Captain: , Toledo, OH (40)

I spent one month at the end of 2014 in this marina. Everything works well and the staff is really friendly and efficient. My special thanks to Dick Brannan for taking care of my transportation needs; nice guy and even showed me my first alligators - wow! The current is really strong so you had better enter near slack.

The only negative thing was non-working WiFi and I was told by the marina staff that they had asked the responisible entity to fix the problem; they were still waiting.

Excellent Value, 2014-12-19
Captain: , Dover, DE (101)

We left our catamaran at Cooper River Marina for a month, and spent several days living on the boat there too.
The staff is very accommodating and helpful. They have a book of local service providers but be prepared that you are out in the boonies at Cooper River. Unless a service provider knows you're in North Charleston, and at Cooper River, they may have a hard time finding you. North Sails did have no problem coming to pick up and deliver back a sail we had repaired, and we were able to find someone to clean our boat who lived right at the marina.
The marina store has food, beer and ice and some fishing and marine supplies.
The marina itself is a bit removed from stores and restaurants, but there are a Costco and grocery stores, including Trader Joe's, within a 20-30 minute drive and the staff is willing to drive you to West Marine if you need a lift. Big plus for us is that the airport is only 10-15 minutes away.
The current can be over two knots on the transient dock so be aware of that, there are also a couple unlighted buoys to the south of the dock if you approach at night. Now that the naval base has been repurposed the traffic is limited to small tugs, recreational boaters and the occasional barge. The live-a-boards we met at the marina were very helpful and kind.
There is no wireless at the marina. They have a broken antenna that hasn't been replaced, though cell coverage was good.
The marina is near a paper plant that emits a strong and unpleasant odor after dark.

A Wonderful Marina, 2014-10-31
Captain: , Visalia, CA (350)

We found this spot through Active Captain and all the good reviews were correct. A very friendly and helpfull staff, Matt the manager stayed late to make sure that we were settled in. It is much quieter than other major marinas in Charleston.

Excellent Service, 2014-10-17
Captain: , Charleston, SC (57)

The guy saw us coming and was at the fuel dock to meet us when we got there. Shows they take initiative. Good people here!

Great overnight stop if you don't care to see CHS, 2014-08-13
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (210)

We didn't care to visit the town after already visiting in May so we looked for a cheap marina. Cooper River fit the bill. The dockmaster helped us tie up and brought an electrical extension cord.
Just be aware there are no facilities nearby.
WiFi did not work at the boat.
Friendly and helpful staff

Great Stop, 2014-04-23
Captain: , Everett, Washington (824)

We were here for 9 days in April and chose it because of the moorage rates and the closeness to the airport. The staff is outstanding; universally helpful, pleasant and will stretch themselves to help out. There are no support services near this marina as it is out in the middle of no where. Biking is out of the question. But, the staff took us to places we needed to go as part of their daily errands. We did a store run, got propane, and they took us to the airport and picked us up. The transient dock is exposed to current, wakes from the nearby industrial wharf, and wind. Matt, the manager, was able to move us into a vacant marina slip because we are only 30 feet long and it was wonderfully quiet and the live-a-boards were a nice group.

An excellent facility with great staff!, 2014-04-03
Captain: , Yorktown, Virginia (391)

We were bound from Honduras to Virginia in March aboard the schooner Alliance, and popped in to Charleston to duck gale force winds around Hatteras. After trying to drop a hook a couple places, these guys took us in. The staff is amazing! They caught lines, gave us an awesome rundown of the marina and area, and even shuttled crew back and forth to the grocer's, the car rental place and the train station. The marina offered great protection from the weather, and was a welcome respite for the crew. Thank you guys so much! We've added Charleston and the Cooper River Marina to our port info book for the next time. Thanks again!

Great People, Nice Docks, 2013-12-03
Captain: , Wickford RI (200)

On our way south in the fall of 2013 we left our boat here over Thanksgiving while we went home for a break. Dock master and dock hands could not have been more helpful. The price was worth the trip up the river (less than half the monthly at the downtown marinas), and it's closer to the airport as well. I would have given it the fifth star if there was a place to provision neàrby. Concrete floating docks in excellent condition, nice showers and laundry. Well run, clean. Just kinda' removed from the attractions of downtown but a great alternative.

Love It Here, 2013-09-05
Captain: , Charleston (40)

We keep our boat here, so we are biased. We'd rate it a 5 star if there were nearby stores, etc. Marina employees are really super and go out of their way to help in any way they can.

Out of the way, 2013-07-03
Captain: , Charleston, SC (135)

Stayed there for a month in the spring 2013. I have a 47 ft. sailboat and they put me on the "daydock" which is a little closer in than the long dock way out on the river where large transients normally go. The current can be quite strong but it is a very easy approach so it was pretty easy getting in and out. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. The small ships store has a few important items that can save you a long trip to West Marine. The bath facilities are clean but small. The biggest problem is the location and the length of the pier. It is exactly 1/4 mile and you are out in the middle of no where. If you dont have a car you cant get to anything. There were almost never any dock carts on the transient dock and the WiFi is sketchy. Price is good and I would probably stay there again as long as I had transportation.

Best value marina, 2013-01-13
Captain: , San Francisco (10)

Reasonable rates and very helpful staff. We left the boat for 2 weeks. When we returned, they gave us rides to grocery store. All clean and modern. Internet service spotty. Ask them if that is improved.

Helpful and Friendly, 2012-11-13
Captain: , Norfolk VA (53)

Even though they had a fair number of transients, they were able to fit us into their "Day Dock" area for two weeks. Everyone was friendly and helpful. This is an isolated spot: 2 miles to the nearest bus stop. Since we had bicycles, we could ride to the bus stop and take the bus downtown. They'll gladly take you to the grocery store.

Great Place To Be In a Storm, 2011-09-15
Captain: , Kemah, TX (612)

Sept-Oct 2011

We have been here at the marina for a month and have been allowed to stay another month even though they repeatedly state you are only here for 30 days. I think that gives them the opportunity to evaluate you while you are here. We are on the transient dock. As we are 42', they recommended moving to the corner slip where they had much more support in the event of a storm. So after a few days, we left for Spain, during which hurricane Irene and tropical storm Lee decided to pay the area a visit. Although they recommend leaving to go farther up the river, we were gone. They kept an eye on the boat, added a few extra dock lines, and kept us informed via email of her status.
Now this place can be a bit rolly when a ship passes by, we enjoy that feeling and sleep well through it. Now the storm passing - the boat saw 50kt winds without any difficulty. We like the fact we are up north of the actual harbor and not nearly as exposed as the Charleston Harbor Yacht Club.

Although the marina is out of the way, when we have needed to go somewhere, they have obliged us as long as our needs were during working hours 7am-7pm. They have driven us into Charleston, and picked us up when we were ready to return. When we needed to pick up a few things in North Charleston, they stayed with us so we had a return ride immediately.

These guys here are nothing short of GREAT. We really enjoy being here.

Deep, well maintained, friendly staff, 2011-07-28
Captain: , Charleston, SC (50)

Excellent marina, deep water, quiet location, about 11 miles drive to Charleston. Excellent facilities include hot showers, washers and driers, and a small chandlery with boating supplies, coffee and snacks. Well maintained by the Charleston County, it is a public park. Entrance not marked at night.

Friendly and Helpful Folks, 2011-04-06
Captain: , Pensacola, FL (675)

Great modern Marina. Nice ships store and facilities. Great captains lounge and good washers and dryers. One negative issue is large wakes from passing ships. Another is that the location is very isolated and hard to get to any stores or other shopping.

Best price in Charlestown but need a vehicle, 2010-06-29
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

Get very secure Marina with geat prices if you are visiting a local resident or are a resident. Very clean and nice bathrooms handicap accessable. Excellent staff. Great place to leave the boat for a month. Not close to anything so you need a car. Very safe as long as you don't go in to the adjacent neigborhood which is 3 miles from the marina thru the Federal Center.

A 5 star facility in a 2 star location, 2010-04-12
Captain: , Block Island (1679)

What a fabulous marina! Everything new, clean, fresh. Showers, docks, electric, lounge and staff all first class. What a shame that it's out in the boondocks of North Charleston. If you have a vehicle available, this place might be an option for an extended stay, but don't expect to do much provisioning otherwise. The dock staff will give you a ride to the store if they have time. If you're hoping to do some sightseeing and shopping, go to one of the downtown locations instead.

Other issue is the wakes. Even on the inside of the transient dock, occasionally wakes can be very bad. The large floating dock does make a breakwall of sorts. I stayed for a month in 2009, and survived without a scratch; use plenty of fenders. Don't rule this marina out based on the wake warnings, just be prepared. Current runs ~ 2-3kts on the ebb.

Their transient rates and tight security do make CRM an attractive choice if you need to leave your boat for an extended period, and if you're gone, wakes don't matter. Due to the location inside a gov't compound, this may be the most secure marina around. Also, generally more proteced from bad weather than the downtown factilties.

Nice marina, ships store, well built floating docks, very isolated., 2009-03-18
Captain: , Key Largo (5330)

Lots of current, some ship waking traffic, but exelent floating docks. Surrounding neighborhood sucks, but with Enterprise, you can avoid it.

Check the price before you go, 2008-06-12
Captain: , Whitehall, Mi (1754)

We were looking for a place for a month:
Skipper Bob showed $10/ft
Thier web site showed $12/ft
When we called they wanted $15/ft

Not recommended for just overnight, 2008-01-21
Captain: , Oriental, NC (231)

I agree with the other reviewers on all points. The marina itself is excellent, but it is not convenient to get to from either the ICW or the ocean. Worked out well for us our one stay because we needed a two-day overlay to do some minor maintenance, and it had the best transient rates in the area. Fortunately, our ship was well provisioned so we had no need to go ashore for supplies. Can't say enough about the profesionalism of staff.

Great Stop!, 2007-08-20
Captain: , Oriental, NC (244)

The facilities are excellent and the staff makes you welcome and are very helpful. If you are a transient you will need a rental car to be able to get around as the marina is isolated. It is much less expensive that the other Charleston marinas. Trasients should ask to be tied up inside the Mega dock to avoid the wakes from the river traffic. We have stopped there a number of times and have always enjoyed our stays.

6/2007 visit, 2007-07-30
Captain: , Scituate, MA (5)

Great people and access, BUT very difficult to find by car and a long way from anywhere. ALSO downwind SW from a cement plant, very dusty/dirty.
I'm 12th on their list for a 40' slip, probably 2 years.

Difficult to review properly..., 2007-04-20
Captain: , Castine, ME (59120)

We stayed here as transients for a whopping 9 days in April, 2007 (including a very bad nor'easter clocking winds of 70 MPH). It is very difficult to rate this facility with one rating. Instead, here are the good and bad things:

The good:
- the facilities are exceptional and new including a lounge, showers, bathrooms, etc.
- the staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful
- the prices are very good

The bad:
- it is right on a very commercial river (see below)
- there is nothing around the area at all - if you go anywhere, it is by taxi
- there is no WiFi available (the management told me it is coming)
- incredible outgoing current

This part of the Cooper River has ships, tugs, and other commercial traffic going back and forth 24 hours a day. The marina has excellent large concrete docks that act as a breakwater for boats *inside* the float. As the marina gets full, they put boats on the outside of the breakwater. I wouldn't suggest using this marina as a transient if you are put on the outside. Request to be on the inside when you make a reservation. It is very, very bumpy on the outside all night long.

This part of the Cooper River has significant current during the ebb/outgoing part of the cycle. It can be 3+ knots in speed on the outside of the transient dock. It is much better on the inside but it is still strong. Every transient that was there with us made their departure plans around the tide because it can be so difficult. If possible, try to dock with your bow up river so the major part of the current comes against your bow.

We stayed on the outside for 2 days and asked to move. They allowed us to move to the inside and it was much better. Thankfully we were on the inside during the bad storm.

Great Marina, 2007-02-13
Captain: , Charleston, SC (14)

I have been here since 1996. The Navy gave it over to Charleston County Recreation who currently runs it. Great staff and dock crew. Good prices. Plenty of water under docks. Nice docks and facilities. Take care with the current. At times it can be a if you don't know what it is doing.
