Reviews for Convention Center Courtesy Dock
Okay spot to overnight before going up the Tenn-Tom or down to the ICW, 2017-05-04
Captain: , Litte Rock (253)

Stayed overnight on April 24, 2017. Free courtesy dock tie-up, adjacent to Convention Center's four-level parking garage. Call security (251) 208-2165 before docking; guard will require you to show registration/documentation number and proof of insurance.
Approach slowly from downstream and determine how you want to position your boat relative to the dock's protruding rubber fenders and large, widely spaced cleats. Area is susceptible to logs, tree branches, and other debris. No protection from wakes, and there's a lot of tow and workboat traffic 24-7, but they passed by pretty slowly and we weren't waked uncomfortably. Wind protection from west only.
Dock area is fenced off; guard will unlock gate for your access to garage, Convention Center, and walkway over train tracks and Government Street. Guard also activates security camera. Fairly short walk over to restaurants and bars on Dauphin Street.
We had a Verizon signal, 4G with 2-3 bars.
Depending on height of your freeboard and whether you have any sort of gangplank, you (or your pet) may have a steep jump down or steep walk up.

Great free dock!, 2017-05-03

4-25-17 This is a great place to stop and visit Mobile. Call security to let them know you are staying overnight, cameras monitor the dock 24/7. We didn%u2019t experience rough wakes during our stay, even though we had ships and barges pass by. A short walk to downtown and the museum. Very informative guided tour bus can be boarded at the museum. Good food at the local restaurants.

Our third stop, 2016-11-09
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (270)

Love Mobile and could not imagine bypassing this free wall. This is the third time through Mobile and the Convention center gives you the ability to stop and be right on Dauphin street. We are hooked on Moe's bb-que and with bikes it's a breeze to get there.

Don't let the wakes stop you, just fender well and have two long spring lines ready (2 giant cleats are what you tie to) The worst wakes are from fellow boaters, not tows or tankers.
Again Thank you Mobile for having this free wall available to boaters.

Fender up cowboy. , 2016-10-24
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (728)

This is an outstanding free stop and only "dock" anywhere near
downtown. Spent one night here 10/24/16 and had a great time in town.
Our boat rub rail is about 4' off the water and it was an easy step off the boat. If your boat is shorter it will be a step up.
Traffic was polite and the only rocking came from a passing pleasure boat (go figure). Staff was very helpful with town information. Will stay here again for sure (free is always good)

Unbeatable location and price, 2016-06-28
Captain: , United States (3192)

We spent two nights here. You are right at the end of Dauphin Street, the historic main drag with several restaurants, shops, bars, etc.. We got a great free WiFi signal from the convention center, at least until they reconfigured it for a convention that needed it secured. Full-time security. Nominally a two-night maximum, but they said it would be no problem if we needed more time.

Contrary to previous comments, the permanent fenders are not concrete; they are HDPE. That's still hard enough to do damage, so if your rub rails are higher or lower than the fenders (ours are higher) you will want to have your own fenders or fender boards in place before coming alongside. And, yes, be prepared to use barge-sized cleats.

Great Free Downtown Stop-over, 2015-05-23
Captain: , Currently living aboard and cruising the Gulf Coast (260)

Pretty much the same as the previous review. Security people are friendly and excellent to deal with.

Thank you Port Authority for free wall., 2014-11-11
Captain: , Beaufort NC (500)

This spot is at the right past the Alabama port authority, look for the blue crane, you are close. Then on the north side of the convention center wall you'll see a half round you can tie up between the round and the north end of the wall. There is room for 2 boats, spring very well and use the biggest fenders you have and it's fine. There is traffic and if rocking and water slapping against your boat bothers you...skip this spot. It is a perfect location to go into downtown which has a bunch of restaurants and bars. Before you land call to get permission, they will want to see your insurance and youll fill out a form, it's that easy.

Extremely difficult to tie up, expecially in bad weather., 2012-10-29
Captain: , Mesa AZ (1609)

Not designed for pleasure craft. Water is extremely rough and the large cleats and cement walls will destroy lines. Dock space is long but runs right along river and freighters/tows move within feet of the dock.

Convenient place to stay, but difficult tie-up, 2012-02-06
Captain: , Marietta, GA (260)

Great convenience as located right at entrance to Mobile Bay. Arrived at sunset and docked to cross the bay the next morning. No water or power, but very safe and FREE. Be careful when docking as the teal cushion-appearing material at dock is actually conrcrete, and it is difficult to get on to the dock from boat. Lots of large ship traffic, but wake did not bother us.

Good "in town" stop., 2011-03-26
Captain: , baltimore md (644)

Two of us stopped on a blustery, 20 out of the south, day. We used most of the availiable dock space on the North side. We did call security 251 208 2165 and they said come on in. You need proof of insurance and fill out a form with your name and vessel registration. BIG dock cleats. Use some long spring lines to hold yourself stationary and use your fenders to ride on their BIG green/blue ones. We found it to be just a little bouncy from the wind and very little action from the commercial traffic. Very calm at night. We all enjoyed Veets Tavern and Royal Scam around the corner on Royal st. We stayed one night 3/23/11.

Mobile Convention Center, 2008-06-24
Captain: , Hite, Utah (15668)

This dockage is right on the ship channel and subject to wakes. It is within walking distance of dowtown Mobile. It is secure.

Convention center courtesy dock, 2008-01-20
Captain: , Braselton GA (226)

Directly on main ship channel, no services available but very convenient for transient space. Space is free; first come/first served. Space for approximately two 45-50 ft boats.
