Reviews for Compass Marina
Compass Marina is a delight, 2016-10-24
Captain: , Kimberton,Pa. (40)

We found Compass Marina while cruising south for the winter. The floating docks are well constructed and the grounds for this small Marina are tidy and provide a snug harbor for your vessel. The heads are clean though a stool would be nice in the ladies shower just to be able to place your clothes or shower supplies off the floor. My towel took up the hook.
The owner Keith is very knowledgeable and is an excellent host. He worked to ensure our stay was a total pleasure. He personally rotated our vessel to help in our departure from his tee head. Clearly he has done this before. You want to "high five the marks" as you enter or leave. The mud was showing during our departure but we had no issues with our 5 ft 3 in draft. I will hope we can include this stop next spring as we make our way north. Leslie and Clayton. s/v Tango

A Special Place, 2016-09-19

My wife and I chose Compass Marina as the final stop of our six-month cruise down the ICW and we cannot recommend it too highly. Keith is a great guy, the docks are excellent, and the marina is very well protected. We were couch surfing with friends in the little town of Mobjack (worth a stroll around) when a strong front came through...blowing a steady 30 kts for a few hours. I walked down to the marina and it was a mill pond!

We have kept our 37foot Tartan at Compass for almost 9 years and love the location and great service we recieve from Keith Jones. It is a little difficult to turn around in the marina when we have a NE wind, but I have learned how to make it work for us.

Water, water everywhere and you know the rest!, 2016-07-11

We splashed Shangri-La late this year due to my bout with Lyme disease and set out for our spring shakedown cruise on July 1 with full fuel tanks and 150 gallons of fresh water (plenty right?). Cruised from York River Yacht Haven into Mobjack Bay and then up the East River, anchoring off an old plantation style house purchased by George Harrison and Yoko Ono six months before his death (they planned to open a recording studio there but tragedy struck). Awoke Saturday morning to discover that a utility hose in the engine room had failed (and I had relied on the hose end sprayer rather than the source valve - lesson learned) and I had slept through the bilge pump emptying the 150 gallons of water from the boat. Not a drop of fresh water on board for our weekend outing. Checked the charts and found Compass Marina one mile away shoehorned into a small creek. After a phone call to Keith during which he invited me in to fill our tanks I opted to bring the tender in since the largest vessel into the marina before was a 47 foot trawler and I was not interested in setting any records based on the way my luck was trending that morning. Gathered a few containers and went in and was very impressed by the tidy compactl marina with great floating docks, a dredged 50' wide entrance channel and well kept outbuildings including a beautiful guest cottage, laundry, nice bathhouse and pretty grounds to walk. Keith walked down and welcomed me and introduced himself. We chatted for a while and then he gave proud a tour of his beautiful property. He fetched an extra 7 gallon water can and I filled that and our containers for water run number one to replenish our supply. On run number two Keith joined me for a tour of our Selene and he loved her. We toured the town of Mobjack, a very quiet spot with no real amenities, walked the roads which would be great for bikes, and enjoyed the water Keith had graciously shared. Our Selene 53 would have fit at the one T available for transients and smaller vessels would have more options. This is a beautiful quiet marina that will be a destination for us and our cruising companions in the future. This is not the place to go if you are looking for entertainment other than the above and what you produce on board, but is a gorgeous spot! The guest cottage is beautiful and could serve as a rendezvous center or gathering spot if a group were to visit.

I highly recommend Compass Marina if you are this part of the Bay and need a stop.

Very Peaceful, 2015-10-29
Captain: , Mobjack, VA (10)

We have had the pleasure of calling Compass Marina our second home for the past 5 & 1/2 years. The location is very peaceful and relaxing with easy access to the Bay. Keith and Martin are wonderful hosts always willing to help. The floating docks are top notch with pump-out connections available at each berth. The wifi connection is good and the bath house is neary by. If you bring dog treats, Alice the dock master will be your friend for life.

Perfect spot on Mobjack Bay, 2014-11-28
Captain: , Westbrook Ct. (10)

Our autumn trip down the Chesapeake was beautiful and included a stop at Mobjack Bay at the mouth of the East River at Compass Marina. We were assured by friendly owner Keith Jones that our 7' draft could get in and were greeted by him at the dock. His local knowledge put us in touch with Zimmerman Marina for a battery drain problem that had been plaguing us since NYC! Keith even helped to arrange transportation to town to purchase new starter battery.

We had the pleasure of also meeting Martin who so generously with us her just picked bok choy, kale and lettuce!

This is a must stop for the Southern Chesapeake and we will be sure to return.

Small but beautiful marina, 2014-11-25
Captain: , Washington DC (3034)

Keith runs a terrific little spot on the north side of Mobjack Bay. He even delayed his winterizing of the showers so we could enjoy a hot shower on land! The marina is in a very protected little cove, and has very nice facilities, including electricity, water, and pump-out station. If your boat is on the larger size, you should probably call ahead since it looks like anything over 35 feet needs to be on the one available T head.

A Simpler Time, 2014-08-31
Captain: , Annapolis MD (191)

This was a perfect stop for us. We decided to take a side excursion as we have a good friend who grew up in this area. We were not disappointed. The East River has a long maritime history. It is like we have known Keith for years. He was very attentive to our needs. This is a great spot to stop and relax. The floating piers are protected; the bathhouses spotless; pump out @ slip. Our only regret is that we did not meet the rest of the Compass crew. They will be a favored stop for us down the Bay?

Well Protected Location with relaxed setting, 2014-05-26
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (333)

We sailed to Mobjack Bay with the intent to stay overnight at Compass Marina after reading the reviews on ActiveCaptain. We had just purchased a new-to-us boat and wanted a short (4 hour) shakedown. Keith, the owner was very helpful; coming to the point of land and waving us closer to the markers and helping us into the slip. You won't find a friendlier or more accommodating marina owner.
All the facilities are relatively new. The floating docks were great, as this is what we are accustomed to on the Great Lakes and later found out how rare they are in the Chesapeake. The price is great! The service is high with electric, water, and pumpouts at the dock.
Keith even helped me test the AIS transponder which I was having difficulty with.
The channel is dredged. I arrived and departed at low tide with plenty of water below the keel. When coming or going, stay close to the green markers.
This was such a quiet, protected location, we ended up staying an additional night, just so we could get the boat better organized.
%u2026 and the receipt emailed to me had a picture of the boat%u2026 very cool!

Quiet, secluded place to get away from it all, 2013-09-08
Captain: , Seaford, VA (783)

Our two boats pulled in on 9/7/13 after a week long trip up the Chesapeake Bay and back, making this our last stop. What a great choice for a place to kick back and unwind. If not for the sailboat masts sticking up above the trees, you would never know this was here when coming up the East River. Even after you make the hard left turn (after Green 5 marker), you still can't see the marina! Keith guided us in (stay close to the green daymarkers in the entrance). It is a tight spot, but so protected that we both maneuvered easily into our slips. "Dockmaster" Alice is the friendliest dockmaster ever!
We hated to leave, but us non-retired people have to work sometimes.

Great Find at the right time, 2013-08-27
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (21)

Last fall, we were on a week's cruise and were planning to drop the hook upriver. Dicey weather was predicted so we tucked in here. Couldn't get anybody to answer phone or VHF. We docked there anyway and were called back by Keith, the owner later. He was absent for a family emergency. Nice facilities but a bit tight for maneuvering as others have related. Next morning our electric fuel pump was dead and we waited several days for new one in terrible weather. Very snug and protected. Never did meet Keith but left him a check. Overall, a good experience.

We stayed overnight here July 11, 2013 and found the small marina and friendly owner to be just what we expected. The owner came out to the dock to watch us navigate the channel and then assisted in docking. The facilities are faily new and well taken care of. Very peaceful surroundings.

Captain: , annapolis (391)

Lovely, isolated small marina. Hard to believe a marina coiuld be shoehorned into this cove but it has been done. Owner Keith is helpful friendly, obliging and a pleasure to know. How many marina owners send you a thank you e-mail after you leave? Very small town "Mobjack" to walk around; only can see well-kept homes, a church and plenty of water surrounding town. No shopping, good cellphone signal (both Verizon and AT&T) and free wifi service from owner. Pumpout right at dock.

Absolutely delightful experience, 2013-06-21
Captain: , Newport (131)

If you are looking for peace an quiet in a beautiful place this is it. Virtually new floating docks with a pump out at every slip. Owner, Keith, most helpful dockmaster I've met. Even came out on the point to make sure we were in the right part of the entrance channel.
Planned on one night, stayed two and would have stayed longer if time permitted.
Don't miss this place.

Pleasant stop, 2013-06-11
Captain: , Pasadena,Maryland (510)

Small marina, with all the basics. More like tieing up at someone's home. A little tight manuevering inside the cove. Most boats in are 35-40 ft. Might be tight for larger. Nice location.

Great Stop, 2013-06-03
Captain: , VIRGINIA BEACH (30)

We needed a pumpout so we pulled in. Keith (owner) was very friendly and did not want any $$ for the pumout. He even showed us around his property. They have a beautiful point of land overlooking Mobjack Bay.

Great rural marina, 2012-10-25
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (80)

If you want to get away from it all and sail in a great area this is it. While I have not stayed here I have visted the marina and it is all top notch. Bring what you need though as there are no stores near by. The owner and I spoke on the phone several times and he was always nice and prompt to answer a message

You gotta visit, 2012-10-06
Captain: , Kent Narrows, MD (200)

Compass is a first class operation in a small, secluded "pond" off the East River, Mobjack Bay. Keith Jones came out and met us by dink at anchor in the river the night before going in to the marina and was instantly like an old friend. The next two days in the marina were special, helping him go up the mast on his sailboat and enjoying the clean facilities and great hospitality. We had his truck to use for shopping and a lot of friendly discussion with the local slipholders. This is a 15 slip marina, with floating docks, and the owners living on the premises. In Mobjack Bay, you gotta visit Compass!

I loved this small rural marina. Great floating docks and bathrooms and the owner is really personable. Bring what you need on your boat (no restaurants or stores here) and enjoy the quiet rural setting. Mobjack Bay is one of my favorites places to sail on the Chesapeake.

Great port in a storm!, 2012-08-07
Captain: , Chesapeake, VA (253)

Great little marina! Easy access from Mobjack, just stay close to the wall coming in. We ducked in to get out of storm. Washers, dryers, showers, shore power. Perfect. Owner is very helpful. Call ahead, very small marina.

Another great stop, 2012-04-28
Captain: , Lake Ariel, PA (184)

We ducked into Compass Point to get out of another rough day on the bay. Keith was very specific and clear with his instructions to get thru the narrow but well marked channel into this beautiful, serene marina. The dockage was calm and the grounds were beautiful. It was our anniversary, and Keith not only recommended a top shelf restaurant, but loaned us his truck for two days to get to town. Very pet friendly and boater friendly. Free electricity and pump out at each slip.

Very cleand and well run, 2011-12-08
Captain: , Harveys Lake, PA (100)

Stopped for a single night to refuel. Wonderful staff with on-site security watching over the boats and helping you when needed. Keith was great with local knowledge and here is the plus factor, he came in to fuel my very small boat on his day off. That to me, says it all.

Compas Marina, 2011-08-15
Captain: , Annapolis (100)

Among the nicest docks and dock master we have experienced.

While cruising the lower bay a few weeks ago we anchored further up the river. We tied our dingy up to one of the docks at this marina to walk around this charming town. We were greeted by the dock master Keith. He was very helpful and gracious with his time and local knowledge. Later in the day I unexpectedly needed an Internet connection. Keith generously helped us out. We are very grateful. The marina and facilities are among the nicest in the Bay, and the setting is beautiful.

Its Perfect, 2011-02-02
Captain: , Mobjack, VA (10)

We have kept our 30' Cape Dory at Compass since 07 and love the ammenities including pristine bath house & free pumpout accessible to each slip, quality of other boats and knowledgeable owners. The private property is very well maintained and quiet, and the marina mascot, Alice is always eager to welcome visitors. With quick access to the four rivers, Mobjack and the Chesapeake there are always good destination points or just great daysailing from Compass Marina, making it just about perfect.

Compass Marina, Mobjack, VA: Quiet Rural Elegance, 2011-01-31
Captain: , Hampton Roads, Virginia (12)

I've stayed at Compass Marina, and have to say the owners (Keith and Martin) have gone out of their way to make sure your stay is wonderful. This marina is only a few years old, so everything is extremely up to date and reflects the latest technologies: Floating docks; pump out avaiable at every slip; electricity sufficient for any boat. Clean, bright showers . Wifi at the docks. For those who don't want to make the trek by boat, they have an adorable cottage (not really a cottage -- a very nice house, with full amenities, recently built) that is available for the weekend, week or month.

When your destination is Mobjack Bay (which is a weeklong discovery destination, minimum), Compass Marina should be your first stop -- it won't be your last at this great facility. It's rural, peaceful solitude with a completely modern marina.

Compass Marina, 2011-01-29
Captain: , Hampton, VA (2502)

I have not stayed here but have walked the docks and looked carefully at the pond holding the marina. The marina is situated in a well sheltered pond and has truly excellent piers and associated facilities. Though this marina is primarily used by long-term slip holders there are a few slips to available for transients. Turning within the pond is tight but doable. The location is fantastically scenic. Because Mobjack is at the end of the road with no stores, restaurants etc. this is a true get away from the rat race. If the owners could provide occasional transportation to the grocery or Walmart this would be a top pick marina.
