Reviews for Coecles Harbor Marina and Boatyard Inc.
extra kind, 2017-08-12
Captain: , Panama City, FL (645)

Many thanks to marina staff for their kindness when we had to take our boat kitty for her last ride to the north fork vet. We were grateful for the quick cart rental to ease her last ride. They have a beautiful facility made even better by their kindness.

Captain: , staten island (551)

As a spot to just relax , enjoy the scenery this place was great .Dinner at the Ram inn was good , and few little resturaunts and farm stands , had the best fruit Ive ever eaten
Marina is out of the way and renting a golf cart was a must in my opinion , ours went dead ,but as wife said naturally I had to push til it ran out of power 1//2 mile from dock , lol , Ive been known to push the envelope sometimes ,,, Ok all the time !
Dock Hadnds where apologetic and said I was first to ever get stranded , Hey another first! no big deal quick ride back off again
Marina was clean well maintained and recomend to anyone that wants an unspoiled hideaway

perfect place, 2016-10-13
Captain: , Westport CT (554)

Have not been here in 15 years so was a little nervous as to what to expect...they did a great job! First the location is perfect...a little quieter than west neck harbor and with a lovely view.

Deckhands were very helpful and facility first rate. They were very accommodating in driving us to a later dinner reservation. We will be back.

Short stay at Coecles, 2016-08-15
Captain: , Bluepoint, NY (10)

The staff at Coecles were fantastic. From the Dock Hands when yo arrive to the staff at the from desk being helpful and informative to the service department & mechanic's being professional & knowledgeable, I can't say enough good things. I had an issue with one of my engines and the mechanics repaired the problem, educated me on the issue, and completed the job in a timely manner.
The ladies at the front desk directed us to places in town, the facility is kept clean and enjoyable. The pool and BBQ's add a great extra, and they provide "golf cart" rentals which you can utilize to get around the island. We look forward to making another trip trip Coecles next year !
Thanks for an enjoyable stay !

Quiet marina in a nice harbor, 2016-08-15
Captain: , Patchogue (10)

Coecles is a nice quiet marina that has all the necessities a boater needs. The pool was clean and cool given the 95 degree heat wave we had while visiting. The staff was attentive and the service techs were more than happy to give some advice to an engine problem I was having. They provide car service into the nearby town or you can rent 2 or 4 person electric car and tour on your own. We did the later and had a great time touring around Shelter Island.

Love this place, 2016-07-28
Captain: , Bristol (10)

The staff is wonderful,, and the facility is great. We love the pool, laundry and showers. Next time we will reserve one of the electric cars ahead of time so we can tour the island.

Cruise 2016, 2016-07-28
Captain: , Falmouth ma (10)

The other boat that was cruising with us had a fuel filter issue. It was after hours and one of the yard employees opened up the shop and lent us a vice and tools for us to complete the job! Can't tank them enough. We would definitely go back there again

Perfect Family-Owned Marina, 2016-07-26
Captain: , Charlottesville (265)

We favor smaller marinas, and this had just about everything we like - certainly enough to overlook any minor imperfections. Excellent dock staff. Nice showers (but not air conditioned), small ships store; kid-friendly pool (adult, full-time lifeguard); so-so WiFi without our Island Time, but Netflix streaming with it. We didn't rent the bikes or their electric cars, but they looked nicer than anything we've seen at other marinas. They have a free shuttle (service ends at 6:00, so a cab ride back from dinner). A serious, working yard, I'm convinced they could address any mechanical issue you have. We draw 6 feet and were told to come in on a rising tide, which worked fine; we entered the inlet a little more than an hour before high tide and never saw less than 8 feet the whole way in. We were told to hug the fuel dock (north side of entrance) to avoid shoaling to the south.

Great quiet little spot, 2016-07-06
Captain: , NYC - Liberty Landing (236)

We pulled in for a few nights around July 4th and had a great time. Primarily a (30'-40') power boat marina, but half a dozen hinkleys there too. We draw a hair under six feet, so when sitting at the slip (#26) we were on the ground from 45min before/after low tide. But its soft and we had no issues.

As the other reviews hafe said, you have to be careful getting in/out, but if you hug that north beach at the cut, then stay centered in the rest of the markers you will be fine. We are on a 48' sailboat and saw 14' of water hugging Reel point. It does get shallow, so we only came/went within 2 hrs of high tide, but really had no issues. Saw at least 6.5 feet of water at the most shallow part and there was still 18" of tide left to come in if we had waited longer.

Not too much to do on the island, but very quiet/quaint. Marina was extremely friendly. Rent the electric car to drive around. Take the ferry over to Sag (south ferry), but don't freak out at the uber prices once you get into proper hamptons :)

Good overnight stay, 2015-09-10
Captain: , Hingham, MA (317)

My wife and I arrived after "winning" the beach on Gardiner's Island. We came in late, and Coecle's was nice enough to accommodate our request for side access (as opposed to med-moor) by permitting us to spend the night at the end of their fuel dock. We came in late, and Gary greeted us, helped us get tied up and wired for power. Good showers, four washing machines, four dryers. Really beautiful spot, made all the more beautiful by a couple of Shelter Island 38s on the dock.

Coecles Harbor-Awesome, 2015-08-17
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, FL (70)

Spent nearly two weeks here, to visit family and friends, plus a little boat work. We had a haul-out to touch up bottom-paint and to fill a boo-boo on the stern, as well as replaced depth transducer and engine maintainence. Peter and John Needham run a tight business and their staff is top notch and extremely friendly and they all treated us like we were family, it was hard to say good-bye!

Long July Weekend 7/22 to 26, 2015-07-27
Captain: , wickford, R.I. (222)

Our second annual visit - this time on a mooring. The moorings are amply spaced and provide great privacy and are very quiet. We continue to be amazed at the amenities for such a small marina - pool, grills, coverd dining area, nice showers, bike and electric car rentals and shuttle service to IGA and restaurants.

Easy isalnd to bike and the harbor is a great place to kayak, SUP, or cruise in the dinghy.

Very nice staff - we'll be back next year.

Get thin going in, 2015-07-20
Captain: , Liberty landing marina (60)

Coecles is a lovely, quiet and secluded area. The Marina closes pretty early (5 on weekdays and 4 on weekends) and there is no launch service. We just grabbed an open ball when we arrived and paid in the morning. That seemed fine but we were ready to drop off the ball should an owner return. SPECAIL NOTE: Be very attentive to charts and depth when coming in, especially at low tide. We draw a tick under 6' and amd were centimers from the bottom. Also, there are areas inside the cut that are shallow. You need to pay attention. Inside, my depth sounder was bleating relentlessly but I do suspect there is a forsst of sea grass that caused false bottom readings. The same is not true of the channel.

First Rate, 2015-07-16
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (420)

Great spot. Came in with a dinghy steering problem and Skyler, the service manager, was very accomodating on short notice during a busy period. the electric car rentals are well worth the price if you haven't beeen to Shelter Is. before.

Very Laid Back!, 2015-06-26
Captain: , Branford ,CT (220)

A very clean well run marina! The staff could not be more helpful .Nice pool/patio/BBQ grills! This is a hidden gem of a place that you can't wait to come back too!

quaint sheltered cove, 2014-07-27
Captain: , Bayou Bonfouca, LA- Great Loop Cruiser (708)

If you're looking for quaint and protected, this is the place. They have a swimming pool and small ships store. They even rent electric cars to sightsee.
The $4.00/ft seems high, but I'm finding "welcome to NY" a theme for higher prices.
They only offer 30 amp pedestals, but do offer 50 amp splitters.

Great spot!, 2014-07-16
Captain: , New London, CT (51)

Returned to Coecles Harbor Marina for the second time in three years and loved it. Stayed on a mooring for three nights. Beautiful, peaceful spot. Facility is great, kids loved the pool and Nancy at the front desk was so nice and helpful.
Only suggestion I have would be to extend the pool hours beyond 5pm.
Apprecaited the van service into town. after a few hours, we called them for a pick up and they were thre in 5 minutes - nice!
We will be back!

The Full Package of Marinas, 2014-03-12
Captain: , Coecles Harbor (301)

Coecles Harbor is the complete marina of a package. With a pool, barbecue/picnic area, complementary van, bike & GEM car rentals, laundromat, and an immaculate room of heads & showers. The dock crew is very professional and willing to do about anything to accommodate. In recent years the docks have been replanked. The marina seems to also be making changes to make their facilities better. This is my all-time favorite marina and I look forward to returning every year.

Great Great Great, 2013-08-27
Captain: , Wantagh NY (601)

Clean, well run and really nice restful location, if you need a lot of entertainment this is not the place, actually I dont think anything on Shelter would do for that, but you really cant beat this place, very nice pool and free shuttle to town.

Extremely Friendly, Helpful, Quiet Marina, 2013-08-22
Captain: , Stratford, CT (86)

It would be nice if there was more in the immediate area to do, but that isn't necessarily bad either. The marina staff is great and facilities are nice. Mooring price seemed a bit high, but with use of a pool and a ride to town it makes sense. We had a slight mechanical issue and they were more than willing to help. Nice place.

Pristine harbor and marina, 2013-08-21
Captain: , Groton (26)

Quiet harbor, full service marina with very helpful and great crew. They have a van that will take you to town. Tip only! Will come cack again!

Pleasant place and pleasant people, 2013-07-31
Captain: , Milford (530)

Took a mooring and spent a very enjoyable day and night in this very protected area - much more protected than the anchorage at the other end of Coecles. No launch service but the staff is so helpful they'll find a way to get you around. I would have swum in warm water but the water was full of jelly fish - careful of the orange ones.

Delightful spot, 2013-07-13
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

Can't find much not to like here. Quiet, beautiful surroundings, nice people..... Only knock is no launch, but the dinghy ride is a stones throw.

Great facilities, helpful staff, 2012-10-29
Captain: , New York, NY (470)

We arrived late afternoon in late September. Nancy gave us directions to a mooring by phone, she left us a map with directions to walk to a pizza parlor, land left the lights on in the bathroom for us. The facility is spanking clean, great showers, clean laundry room. We just had a quick overnight, so we didn't get to explore much of the island, which looks lovely. Very short dinghy ride from the moorings to the dinghy dock.

Very friendly and thoroughly professional..., 2012-10-19
Captain: , Mystic CT (130)

If your in the harbor you most visit and see for yourself what they are able to do with a picnic boat.

Coecles Harbor, 2012-09-19
Captain: , Bay Shore, NY (550) of the golden oldies of boatyards. They still do things the old fashioned way; especially building boats. Billy Joel and company build them here and they are BEAUTIFUL! The painters and varnish guys are top notch; it is a pleasure to walk the docks and see old fashioned craftsamanship. The marina is the same: clean and neat, well run, low keyed, and a very knowlegable and helpful staff. Moorings also @ $1.50/foot. Ram's Head Inn still a short dinghy ride across the harbor.

Beautiful spot, 2012-07-17
Captain: , Branford CT (10)

quiet mooring field; very well protected; clean showers; bicycles to rent; good people; no launch service; shuttle van into town for provisioning and to restaurants/beaches; very lovely

Great place, 2012-06-28
Captain: , Charlestown (946)

Helpful staff, clean restrooms and a great location for touring shelter Island. A bit of a distance to the stores to get food and supplies but the staff at times can take you if you want or there are taxis available.

Nicest Place on our trip, 2012-06-27
Captain: , Doylestown, Pa. 18902 (414)

Loved this place, calm helpful staff, some of best showers I have seen lately. The marina will drive you to a restaurant of your choice at an arranged time. The ride home from the restaurant is on you. Nice store the boatyard does legendary quality work both motor and sail. Very understated they build very special 38' motor boats here. Bike rentals available off season rates before July 4th were 2 dollars a foot. The town is a long walk but very nice try eating at a place called Sweet Tomatoes near ferry dock.

Restfull, scenic, & convenient., 2011-11-06
Captain: , Noank, CT (128)

A quiet marina that is maintained to the highest standards. Secluded beaches or downtown streets are within a short bicycle ride. If you get lost, you won't care - the island is that scenic. Cabs and a shuttle are also available. Great moonrises!

quiet and perfect, 2011-05-17

Very Quiet & Peaceful, 2010-07-22
Captain: , Sea Cliff, NY (1075)

Rented a mooring for the night at $1.50/ft. Seems expensive, but it gives you access to Shelter Island. The marina facilities are kept in excellent condition, and as others have noted, there is transportation to the ferry dock to go to Greenport if that is your thing.

But why would you go to Greenport? We rented a couple of bikes ($4.00/hr.- ouch!) and spent time riding around Shelter Island. There are some hills, but it is all good. Be sure to pedal along Shore Road for an up-close look at the high-end houses and properties. The tiny town of Deering Harbor is a good ice cream stop along the way.

A few things: The dingy dock is on the north side of the marina. Second, if you do rent bikes be sure to check them over before leaving the marina grounds. I had to repair both bikes during our ride. Third, no one answered the VHF when we called as we approached the marina. So be sure to have the phone number ready.

And finally, it is shallow near Red "10". The Coecles Harbor Marina web site has a printable navigation aid to help with the approach. Mid to high tide is certainly a better choice if possible.

Very very queit, 2009-07-21
Captain: , Lindenhurst, NY (161)

This is out in the middle of no where but sometimes you want that. This is a nice marina.
Very well protected.
Decent docks.

Great spot!, 2009-07-21
Captain: , Old Saybrook, CT (1021)

It ain't cheap, butr we're in "The Hamptons" after all. Transportation to groceries, the ferry to Greenport, etc. and a very quiet marina run by the Needhams, who sail their own classic wooden sailboats around the harbor,. maintain an entire fleet of gorgeous Hinckleys (remember, we're in The Hamptons!) and build some spectacular motor yachts.

Nice Marina, 2008-02-10
Captain: , Mount Sinai, NY (6)

My wife and I spent a weekend at Coecles Harbor Marina. It is shallow in the harbor, watch the sounder. We stayed on a mooring. Friendly and helpful staff, clean bathrooms and showers. Beautiful harbor and scenery, explorered with the dink.

Peaceful easy NY state of mind, 2007-07-12
Captain: , Norwalk, CT (90)

The home of the Shelter Island Runabout and Commuter, this quiet marina has what I like. 12 Transient slips dozens of moorings a dinghy dock and vacancies. There is a nice pool and small variety store. Bike rentals are available and the Needham family will drive you into town if you want to get the ferry to Greenport. Shelter Island doesn’t have much which is just fine with me. A quick ferry ride for a buck will get you to Claudio’s in Greenport for all the noise you want. The marina is situated on the west shore of Coecles Harbor, if you get into a westerly or north blow, you will know it. There isn’t a great deal of water anywhere in this harbor so watch the sounder. But unlike Connecticut shorelines you can count the rocks on one hand (most of the live just north of the transient dock), OK, two hands but not many. There is a fuel dock on the T and the dockhands are always willing to help you get moved around. If peace and serenity are on you menu for the weekend, this is the spot.
