Reviews for Charlevoix City Marina
Great Place, 2016-09-27
Captain: , Bedford, NH (625)

We stayed for one night Aug 16, 2016. We are a 50', 15' beam and 3.5' draft vessel. The fuel dock is actually next door but no problem. Dock hands met us at the slip to help with lines and power hook up. Dock Master came down a little later to check to see if we needed anything else. Right in town with a park along the water. Had music at the amphitheater in the park which was nice. Didn't really use the facilities but were very conveniently located. No problem with the wifi and we were on the end at a T.
Would definitely come back again.

Very nice marina, 2016-09-14
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (1522)

8-17-16 Very nice marina with very helpful staff. Grocery and easy walk and you can use the grocery cart to bring provisions back to your boat. Nice restaurants and a pharmacy close to the marina.

Great protected marina, 2016-09-02
Captain: , Blanco, TX (420)

Stayed here 08/18 thru 08/22/2016, longer than expected due to weather, great place to ride out bad weather in the lake. Very nice marina with excellent facilities and staff. The town has a lot to offer, great farmer's market on Thursday, had concerts in the park adjacent to the marina, beautiful neighborhoods to explore, loved the town and marina.

Great Marina at Neat Town, 2016-08-18
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4015)

This town Charlevoix and the city marina know how to do it right. The beautiful marina, boaters lounge, and showers are fisrt rate. The marina is a part of the waterfront park. Many opportunities for shopping, groceries, restaurants, and history.

The marina staff knows how to do it right - they handle your lines correctly, not just catch it. And, they know how to tie a cleat hitch, a rare occurrance. All staff members are enthusiastic, helpful, and knowledgeable.

The farmers' market has many local vegtable and fruit farmers, and specialized baked goods. So many beautiful and delicious choices that decisions were difficult. If you can plan your stay in Charlevoix to include a Thursday - do so!

This review is written on the marina's internet. It has worked for us, on multiple devices, but at times had periods of slow, jerky performance. Our concern is that there is no password protections, which opens up security problems and also allows anyone in the park to connect, overloading the system and slowing performance.

We find Charlevoix a wonderful place to visit and the marina makes the experience even better.

Captain: , Manitowoc (72)

I spoke with Hal the manager who basically DID NOT CARE. They refused to do anything about it. They refused to discount the rate (even though internet is advertised it is NOT OFFERED).

Never EVER had this bad an experience in ANY marina ANYWHERE.

Bad internet costs a star, 2016-08-06
Captain: , St. Joseph, MI (814)

This is a primo marina in every way: wonderful staff, great location, excellent service, great lounge, close to town, everything anyone could want in a marina - BUT NO INTERNET! Couldn't get it on the docks. Couldn't get it in the boater's lounge. Talked with other frustrated boaters trying to get connected with a variety of iPhones, iPads, Macs, Windows, Androids - nobody could get on.

I will revisit and happily give five stars when this is fixed.

Excellent experience, 2016-07-14
Captain: , Sault Ste Marie, MI (240)

I won't rehash all the previous highlights because they are all true. One thing we found was that in a NW wind we and eveyone else were bounced around a lot. I also didn't read every review but the landscaping around the marina is exceptional. There are two ponids with very large lake trout, and an observation deck overlooking the marina and Round Lake. Special thanks to Hal letting us stay another night when I had a medical emergency. Everyone was very helpful. Make your reservations early!

Great Location, 2016-07-07
Captain: , La Crosse, WI (627)

Hal and crew will take care of you . Grocery store an easy walk. Farmers Market on Thursday. Take your bicycles and ride to Pigs Eatin Ribs: an outside picnic table Smokehouse- one of the best BBQ places that I've ate at. Try the Pig Marbles...

great marina and anchorage, 2016-07-06
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (85)

Spent July 1st here, great marina and staff , excellent location in this interesting town which has great restaurants.

It doesn't get better than this, 2015-09-06
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (780)

new docks and power, professsional friendly staff (thanks Hal!), very wekll protected from wind, current, waves and wakes, a beautiful new park running all along the marina all in a charming small town with plenty of shops and restaurants. There may be other places with all these qualities, but none are better. Way to go!!

One of our favorites, 2015-09-02
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

Stayed here nights of 8/19-20-21/15. Good protection from high winds on the lake. Immediate easy walking access to downtown, which was great - even had a movie theatre, along with plenty of shops/restaurants.

Wonderful City, 2015-08-31
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

Had a terrific time in Charlevoix. The town is charming -- don't miss the mushroom houses! Great restaurants, bars, easy provisioning with everything within an easy walk all make for a delightful stay. Marina is VERY popular and several Loopers we were traveling with were unable to get a slip so call early if going in the summer. This was true even for a mid-week stay. FYI -- we used Bergmann Marine to do our 250 hour oil and filter change. They were fabulous. Were waiting at the dock when we pulled in and was incredibly efficient and thoughtful. Highly recommended.

great marina in the heart of town, 2015-08-29
Captain: , Bayou Bonfouca, LA- Great Loop Cruiser (708)

This marina was a great spot to wait out several weather days. The harbor master, Hal, took good care of us and the dozen other loopers staying.
Make sure you take the 3 mile trip to Castle Farms.

Great City & Marina, 2015-08-23
Captain: , Little River, SC (1967)

We made reservations online for one night but liked the place so much we wanted to stay another night. You have to go at 8:00 AM to the office and put your name on the list. Then they will tell you later if you can stay. Kind of a pain. We were greeted on the dock by the dockmaster and sevral other marina personnel with a most enthusiastic welcome. They seemd to be genuinely happy to see us. Charlevoix is as good as it gets. Great marina facilitries. Good Restaurants (Try Terry's), A great Fish market (John Cross) and the mushroom houses must be seen. Highly recommend a visit here.

no better than this, 2015-08-22
Captain: , Ft Myers, Florida (1663)

As good as it gets. Beautiful marina right in middle of very cool town. Clean facilities , shopping, bike riding, walking, dingy exploring, great restaurants, golf nearby, Enterprise rental cars available M-F.26 mile bike trail to Petowski and Harbor Springs starts at North end of town. Beautiful beaches and lots of Ice Cream!

Marina and Crew are Exceptional, 2015-08-22
Captain: , Vandalia, Ohio (168)

We spent Aug 6 with our family onboard. Perfect spot. Just jump off boat and everything is close All marina facilities very nice and maintained. Dockmaster and staff were great and hooked me up for a quick repair on an oil pressure guage.

Great town and dock, 2015-08-18
Captain: , Port Huron Michigan (180)

Great marina, dock for lunch? No charge if they have the room. Staying the night? Tap rooms, restaurants, ice clean and pastries, groceries, and a three screen movie within two or three blocks of the marina.

Great Place to Visit, 2015-07-09
Captain: , Racine, WI (515)

Gave excellent directions on radio on how to locate slip. Bridge will only open every 1/2 hour. Everything in easy walking distance.

Kids and wife loved it..., 2015-07-07
Captain: , St Louis (240)

Do try to time your arrival to the bridge at the top and bottom of the hour. Call the bridge on the radio or use a horn, one long and one short to gain passage under the bridge. If you show up early you can tie to wall, on the lake side, or hover in the inlet.
The docks and staff are first rate, very helpful and nice. The rest rooms and showers are very clean. You can watch TV while doing your laundry, but bring change as there is no change machine.
Lots of restaurants, shopping and a grocery store are within walking.
Fuel and pump out are available next door at Ward's.

Gregarious Harbormaster and Crew Make This a 5*, 2015-07-06
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (909)

Hal is the most friendly and helpful harbor master I've met. We came in on July 4th at the height of the season for 2 nights and he and his crew gave us a great welcome and even guided us into a more favorable slip after the initial assignment. Facilities are clean. Wifi is so-so. It's a quick bike ride (or dinghy ride) to Irish Boat shop if you need any supplies. In town there are many places to provision and to dine. Terry's Place was superb, but I hear 1hour waits are typical. This is a pretty tony town - even a $8MM boathouse on Round Lake. Google it!

Beautiful marina in the heart of the town , 2014-09-04
Captain: , Grand Haven, Michigan (200)

Hal the dock master was incredibly helpful, although we found it weird they only monitor channel 9 (not 16)

The bathrooms were clean, the boaters lounge was great.

There is a park (also beautiful) between the marina and the Main Street of town so we didn't have any problems with noise just the perk of being so close.

The bridge opens every half hour.

Buy one night get the second free right now as it's after Labor Day!

Great brewpub stop, 2014-09-03
Captain: , Galena, MD (1826)

After Labor day the rates are 2for1, pay for 1 day, stay two.
A new brewpub has opened near the bridge. It is not a brewing facility, but serves only microbrews. Bridge Street Tap Room has over 30 microbrews on tap, along with a few sodas. All the brews are from Michigan microbreweries and are available in 4oz, 9oz and 16oz, along with Howler and Growler fills. They have a flight sampler available of any 5 beers or ciders for $10. Also have a light menu. The local cheeses, sausages and fish dips are great. This is a great stop.

Right in the Center of Town, 2014-08-29
Captain: , Milwaukee, WI (358)

Similar to the other reviews, Charlevoix City Marina is a great facility in an excellent location... I'll be back. When we pulled in on a random Thursday afternoon in August there was live music playing at the park a few steps away... good music, too!

Great marina in a great town., 2014-08-25
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, Fl (410)

Marina very clean, town across the street, beautiful park with concert pavilion located next to the marina. The town is charming. Staff at the marina excellent.

Unique and Excellent, 2014-08-25
Captain: , Tarpon Springs (983)

Truly unique town with the marina right next to the main street. The marina facilities are excellent, but the proximity to the park, concerts, and restaurants adds to it considerably. I was there for 11 days while my wife visited home and can recommend Tony's Pizza and the blackened whitefish at the pub opposite the marina. Loved it all. The only stress point was having to seek an extension for each day after 7, never being sure if you would have to leave or not, but that is apparently part of the Michigan system.

Very good marina in great location, 2014-08-18
Captain: , Palm Beach Gardens, FL (1897)

Our one night here was not long enough for us, but enough to review the dock staff who were professional and attentive.
The marina office and restrooms were super clean and looked rather new, the wifi also allowed streaming on Apple TV with only a few interruptions during peak usage.
We had 38' of depth at our slip the most ever.
Will definitely return when more time allows as this is a magical place.

very nice / quite busy, 2014-08-17
Captain: , Saugatuck MI Cape Coral FL (193)

Use DNR reservation site to book reservations. Wanted to stay extra day so instead of putting request in at 8:00 am Sunday morning (too get on list) booked on internet Saturday night / worked great

Great marina & town, 2014-08-15
Captain: , Massapequa,NY (986)

We loved this marina & great town right across the street. The marina is super clean & right next to a park. Concerts, movies & yoga right in the park. Great farmers market on Thurs. our favorite town on Lake Michigan

Nice docks, helpful staff, super-clean facility, 2014-08-11
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6425)

Great location in the middle of downtown Charlevoix. Dock staff very helpful getting us in and during our stay. Probably the cleanest restrooms we've used, nice boater's lounge with laundry right there. 2 blocks to grocery, Ward's ship's store, downtown shops and restaurants. Take a look at the "Mushroom" homes. We'll be back next year.

True five star marina and stop as town is also, 2014-07-01
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

First class with wonderfull local attractions (homes designed by Earl Young. Extremely protected and new floating docks. Inseason get a reservation to assure dockage.
Here again in 06/31/2014 and met by two dock hands who waved us in and tended lines. Ha the dock master, runs a tight ship and if anything is wrong he wants to be told immedaitley.
I still consider this a 5 star marina.

Great Marina, 2013-10-16
Captain: , Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH (300)

Good depth, 2 for 1 rates, plenty of dckage and a beautiful view. Easy walk uptown to great shopping. Can walk (long) to Walgreens and Walmart, grocery stores. Great place to unwind for 2-3 days.

it's a great place..., 2013-09-09
Captain: , Castine, ME (58572)

We had planned to stay in Charlevoix for 2 nights. Weather had us there for 4. It was a nice place to be stuck.

There's a lot to do - movie theater, restaurants, shops, mushroom houses. It's all convenient and fun. Charlevoix is a wonderful destination. There's a fairly nice supermarket just 2 blocks away across the street from the movie theater. We did a full week of grocery shopping there.

The marina's WiFi connectivity is a bit bizarre (hidden SSID? seriously?) but was incredibly fast - 12 mbps. I'd bet that half the people who try to connect, can't. Perhaps that's why it's so fast.

The facilities are 5 star - all in excellent shape. The other boaters, both long term and transient, we're friendly and fun.

For September is was stay-one-night and the-next-night-is-free. That was a wonderful deal and made it easy to stay.

Characteristic of other Michigan municipal marinas, don't expect much in the way of service - it's such a shame. They're quite pleasant and nice. But none of the personnel are going to do anything you'd expect at a commercial marina or break a sweat providing much of anything except sitting behind the counter. I wish I could come across just one Michigan municipal marina dockhand who knew how to tie a cleat hitch.

Charlevoix Reimagined, 2013-08-05
Captain: , Elk Rapids (100)

A number of years ago Charlevoix was an iffy stop with few and poor docks and an apathetic air.

That has changed.

The new harbor has much more space and the last few years the staff has become accommodating and friendly. (Thanks Hal!)

We visit several times a year as a day trip for shopping and dining. Where before it was chancy about finding a place to tie up, now the staff activeley help arrange it. This has to be helpful to the town's shops and restaurants.

I can see where the harbor might stay noisy into the evening with the road right above it, but I would not hesitate to put in for a night stay anyway. Running A/C and/or a fan would easily block that out.

Awesome marina, 2013-02-06
Captain: , Lakeside Yacht Club (250)

One of the Friendliest staff on Lake Michigan. New floating docks, crystal clear water, downtown across the street. Lots of shopping, dining and plenty of repair services in town. Top notch facility and a must stop for anyone in the area.

Our Favorite Marina on Lake Michigan, 2013-01-19
Captain: , Portage Indiana (503)

We enjoyed this marina so much on our 2010 trip that we cancelled other stops and rerouted our trip just to stay a little longer! The facilities are very modern and everything is spotlessly clean. The Harbor Master Hal is possibly the nicest we have ever met and his staff takes great pride in their job! Everyone seemed to be so happy here, so be prepared to constantly say hi to perfect strangers you pass on the street.

The marina is located in the heart of downtown and don't miss the farmers market right outside the marina. We even watched a symphony perform in the bandshell next to our boat while the sunset over the downtown...simply magical! The City has plenty to do and see within walking distance with the exception of a good grocery store for provisioning. There is a nice beach within walking distance and Lake Charlevoix is a short(5min)boat ride away. Don't miss this stop!

Perfect marina, 2012-09-23
Captain: , Grosse Pointe Farms (260)

Great location in downtown Charlevoix, one of teh most beautiful boating cities on the Great Lakes. Plenty of "old money" cottages & houses to see on the water. ROund Lake is a true GEM!!!

Great spot to stay and located right in downtown Charlevoix. After Labor Day, you pay for your first night and get your second night FREE. Great reason to take a lay day in a beautiful city.

Best Stop on the Loop so Far, 2012-09-02
Captain: , Wilton, CT (70)

We've come from CT, and this is a really great stop. Beautiful municipal marina, on a park, across the street to restaurants and provisions, great location. You willl be beat by the time youc ome through the Straights and down the coast, so give yourself a treat. A definite multiple-night stop.

Excellent Marina and locale, 2012-08-20
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1696)

This is quite possibly the very nicest marina we have stayed at on our entire travels from Florida. (others would be St. Augustine Municipal, Whitekers in Oriental, Gore Bay CAN, Mackinaw City Marina) New everything: Docks, lounge, washrooms, showers. Great staff. In the heart of town. As mentioned in other posts smack dab in the middle of things. Great boat watching.
Drawbridge routine: There is a sixteen foot drawbridge a short distance into the inlet. The operator does not respond to radio except to commercial traffic. Only opens on hour and half hour. To get through loiter outside the inlet until about 5 minutes till then head in slowly. He will see you and open.

First experience with Michigan Harbor system, 2011-08-17
Captain: , Warsaw, Ky (875)

Good place to stop after Drummond Island. Well kept and clean. Knowledgeable staff.

Eventhough this is our first experience with the Michigan Harbor system, we muddled our way through it. We were told we would probably have to leave due to incoming reservations the next morning when I went to extend our stay.

Still like the marina and the top notch facilities.

Charlevoix City Marina, 2011-08-04
Captain: , Green Bay, WI (20)

It doesen't get any better than this. The marina is right in the heart the quaint little village of Charlevoix. Great marina facilities and staff. Sailing the inland twin arms of Lake Charlevoix is worth the trip.

Charlevoix City marina, 2011-03-09
Captain: , Macataw, MI (435)

Once a very difficult place to get a slip, the new and dramatically expanded City Marina is absolutely the top marina spot on Lake Michigan. The bridge opens on the half hour so plan ahead. Dozens of great restaurants and clubs to choose from. Great shopping as well. Ultra modern new faiclity.

Great Place to Get "Stuck", 2010-09-21
Captain: , Belle Maer Harbor (166)

Got "stuck" here for a week in June, waiting for repairs and crew. This is an exceptionally well run marina with supurb, new facilities. and you are right in town, one of the Michigan summer hot spots. What a great destination or a place to get stuck. In fact, try to arrange getting stuck here!

As a municipal marina, this deserves 5 stars, but gave it a solid 4 stars when comparing to the full set of Michigan marinas that have additional facilities, like a pool, tennis courts, a club, etc. But don't let this stop you from using this as a great cruising destination.

Check out the Weathervane restaurant, slightly pricey, but excellent menu and food quality. Worth it!

Great place to get stuck, 2010-09-11
Captain: , Newport, RI (10275)

We got "stuck" at Charlevoix for a week due to gales. We had a 1 day chance to move elsewhere, but we decided to stay as we couldn't imagine a better place to get stuck. The marina facilities are 1st rate, there are lots of shops and restaurants to visit. The town is delightful.

We strongly look at renting a car and exploring the area. There are 2 places that rent cars. We managed to put on 800 miles in 5 days! Be sure to check out Sleep Bear Dunes if you do rent a car.

For restaurants we highly recommend the Grey Gables for a fine dining experience. We had a mixed bag at Whitney's Oyster House. Scovies had great soup and was very reasonably priced. We ate at the Argonne Supper Club, but can't recommend it.

On Saturday there's a great farmers market. Get there early (9 AM) as the nest stuff goes fast.
