Reviews for Charleston Maritime Center
Closed till the end of the year (2017)., 2017-06-27

Called them again today (6/27/17) and they hoped to be open by the end of the year. Still closed still due to damage

Hurricane Mathew damage, 2016-11-17
Captain: , Cape Cod (10)

Nov 2016: This is a wonderful place, one of our favorites. Crystal, one of the staff members there, has informed me that there was lots hurricane damage from Mathew and they won't be open till next spring.

Update regarding fHurricane Matthew Damage, 2016-11-14
Captain: , USEastCoast (664)

Update: Maritime Center closed indefinatly due to hurricane damage. We love this place, have stayed on a number of occasions. Excellent access to downtown Charleston, 5 minutes walk to Harris Tetter and great local dining. Free laundry with the best view of any laundry! Their fuel dock went through some maintenance and is now open.

Downtown close by, 2016-09-17
Captain: , Port Everglades (595)

Again a great place to stop for a few days. Prices have increased a little but still modest compared to others in Charleston. Great staff, walk to Harris Teeter, local hardware bars and restaurants.
A little rock and roll in the daytime .. especially late afternoon when there is lots of traffic on the Cooper River. Reasonably calm at night. Fabulous selection of first class restaurants within walking distance, bicycle or pedicab. I highly recommend Saffron Cafe & Bakery.

ARRIVE AT SLACK tide / current.
Obey instructions from the very competent staff ... there is a shoal in the middle of the marina.

Be sure to visit the South Carolina Aquarium just north of the marina.

Rockin' marina, 2016-06-23
Captain: , Lake Champlain (10)

And not in a good way. Close/easy walk to Historic district which is excellent, but I'm not sure I'd stay here again. No way the others I've read about near here rock and roll as much as this one does

good Marina, tough currents, 2016-06-13
Captain: , Kemah (73)

The Marina here is clean and very close to all Charleston's sights. Although we had been warned by previous reviews, we were still taken by surprise by the currents. They were just under 2 knots when we arrived, but what I had not expected was that there was a component that came from port to starboard when came bow in to the North end of the marina.
A dockhand was there to help us with the lines, and took our bow line, but when our stern started to swing out towards an adjacent boat he dropped the line and jumped onto the other boat to fend us off. As he had not tied us off first this meant that we were then drifting in a 2 boat slip.
My partner had to jump off the bow and make the bowline fast. She then ran down the boat and took a midship line I threw her. Unfortunately we had already made contact with the other boat and damaged his cap rail.
Ultimately the fault lay with me as captain of the boat so a lesson learned there.
Do try to arrive at slack tide and if you and your crew are not confident enough to dock in those circumstances do not rely on the skill of others to make the difference.
If you can arrive at slack tide then this is a nice marina although it is choppy due to passing traffic outside the marine

Great Marina and close to town., 2016-05-05
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (2206)

5-2-16 Stayed 2 nights, great location to walk to town or walk a block to catch free trolly and go anywhere in town. Awesome grocery 2 blocks away.

The marina is a little "Rocky Rolly" when the big ships pass.

awesome downtown marina, 2016-04-29
Captain: , Point pleasant (20)

We stayed here for a week after crossing over from the Bahamas. The staff couldn't have been friendlier nor more accommodating. They met us at the docks to help tie up and then again were there to help when we left. Free laundry was a plus. Close to all restaurants, shops, and grocery store. Would stay here again for sure!!!

Location, Location & Location, 2016-04-20
Captain: , Hobe Sound, Florida (480)

The good news is the location of this marina within easy walking distance of both tourist attractions and boaters' needs. The bad news is the location of this marina adjacent to the main shipping channel of the Port of Charleston. You will be aware of passing ships - day and night. Reasonable rates for dockage and fuel for an in-city marina.

Good Location Location Location, 2016-04-18
Captain: , Chicago, Racine, Fish Creek,Wi (3189)

Stayed 4 13 2016 Close to downtown and groceries at Harris Teeters. Charlestown is very nice city to visit with lots to see and do. Staff frendly and helpful. Nice floating docks and OK washrooms/shower. The bad is it is If winds are lowing out of the E NE SE or ships wake you it is unpleasant. The winds were picking up so could only stay one day or suffer. Some of the slips are better then what I was in.

Very nice Marina, 2016-02-22
Captain: , Fells Point, MD (98)

Good access to the city. Docks are in good order. Two problems: very rolly at times. The Doris Moran really rocked us. Cupboard doors blew open, glasses and dishes flew out and generally made a big mess. The other thing is the on-again off again wifi. Hard to stay connected more than 30-45 minutes at a time. Staff says everything is ok. Not out here. We stayed Dec-Feb and enjoyed our stay and will return.

nice Marina with a great location, 2016-01-17
Captain: , Rock Hall, MD (110)

We stayed for an extra day due to weather. The marina staff assisted in suggestion for dinner: never go to a restaurant with a coupon...About two blocks to a large food emporium, "Harris Tweeter". The old town is just a few blocks stroll. There was a strong wing blowing on the dock and fenders were needed. I intend to go back on the return trip North. from the islands.

Captain: , Sandusky, OH (370)

Super convenient to town Harris Teeter grocery 1block away free washer and dryer great dockhands can be bumpy as it is open to the harbor

Great Charleston location, 2015-12-01
Captain: , South Freeport (750)

We draw 5 ft. Concerned about other's comments about depth inside the marina, we circled (on Thanksgiving Day - one of two days a year -also Christmas- there is no staffing) trying to raise marina for local knowledge. With 30 kts of wind, and serious waves/troughs at full moon low tide, we were concerned about depth of entrance. Finally, a fellow transient (Brian on Naughty Island) hailed us, checked his depth sounder reported 10 feet and a slip next to his. More assured, We came in the entrance with depth to spare.

The marina was comfortable. Very good staff. Good showers, (very slow washer and dryers) and very easy access to Harris Teeter Grocery as well as small hardware store and historic/tourist part of Charleston.

Another Nice Overnight , 2015-11-16
Captain: , Aurora, Indiana (100)

We stayed overnight on 11/14/2015 during our passage south. This was our third stay there within the last 12 plus months. Once again, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is perfectly situated for a walking visit to the market and downtown attractions.

Great place to stay to enjoy Charleston, 2015-10-25
Captain: , Newport (490)

Location is perfect, close to a beautiful city, 1/2 mile from Harris Teeter, free laundry. great rates and a friendly staff. The only disadvantage is a single shower, though we never had to wait. Also there are lots of oysters on the pilings and stangely enough, they can be very noisy! Nonetheless we enjoyed the marina for 6 days!

Great Staff, but; fuel pump broken, 2015-09-01
Captain: , Seven Oaks, South Carolina (245)

FYI: Gasoline pump broken. Deleted by active captain. Call first.

Staff has been very friendly and helpful. When we needed gasoline for the dinghy and their pump was broken, they offered to bring a jug for us the next morning.

Unfortunately they do not enforce the no fishing rule and usually that is no problem, but today there was a group all day long, till after sunset, fishing next to our boat. The fishing was not the problem, it was the drinking and day-long swearing and shouting the group exhibited; the general public which ususally walks to the end where we are did not do so today. I suspect they were intimidated by the rowdy and boisterous behavoir, and with the language it was not a place for family.

Nice small marina close to town, 2015-08-18
Captain: , Newport Beach, CA (420)

We stopped planning to stay a week and decided to stay a month... If you're going to stay for stay for more than two weeks, the monthly rate may be a better option.
Close to town and restaurants. Best marina WIFI we've found on our trip. Occasional surge at all hours due to ship traffic and weekend pleasure craft. Locals tell me that all marinas in Charleston experience surge at times.

No Shoaling Where Boats Moor, 2015-08-12
Captain: , Hollywood (462)

The minimal shoaling is against the seawall bulkhead and not in the slip area. Some large freighters do create a little rocking but nothing bad. Very convenient location and great rates.

Hands Down, the BEST Dock Hands & Service , 2015-07-26
Captain: , Chapin, South Carolina (410)

This week we stayed at three marinas in the Charleston area. Without question the staff at Charleston Maritime Center are the best. When you radio them they quickly answer. They are at the dock ready to assist before your boat gets to the Dock. They are very knowledgeable and personable. If you are in the Charleston area, this is the marine to choose! Good protection. Great location. Very good free wifi and free washers/dryers. Shower is also very clean and easily accessed from the docks. And great prices!

wonderful place, 2015-05-25
Captain: , Alabama (252)

close walk to city market, or take free trolley from the aquarium. harris teeter within walking distance. marina nice, wifi good, view of york town across river

Rocking and rolling, 2015-05-03
Captain: , 100 Mile House, BC, Canada (50)

Nice marina, friendly/helpful staff, close to downtown and all amenities, overall a great place BUT brutal wakes and any wind from SE or S and even worse.

Great Place Wonderful Staff, 2015-05-01
Captain: , Toronto (270)

Knowledgeable staff that cares about you and you boat.
Fuel was easy to access (George and Jeff are awesome) the entire crew go out of their way to make sure you're taken care of from upper management to George on the fuel dock.
Short walk to groceries and restaurants or take the water taxi to the aircraft carrier across the harbour.

More than 5 stars!!, 2015-04-25
Captain: , Ludington (100)

This is a fantastic marina...had no problems with current or wake from large boats in the area. The shower and bathroom were spotlessly clean, the washer and dryer (2 of each) were FREE and even located in a room with big windows overlooking the harbor. Free laundry with a view! How could it be better? This was a wonderful place to stay, and very much under-rated in some of the previous posts. We would recommend this as a top stop in the Charleston area. It's a short walk to catch the trolley for the trip downtown.
Patriot - Ludington, MI 4/25/15

Great Downtown location, 2015-04-23
Captain: , Vero Beach, FL (235)

Easy walk to downtown, Harris Teeter market, hardware store, vegie store, etc. Strong currents can make for interesting docking at times, and shoaling is a bit of a problem for deeper draft (5') boats in other than the outermost slips. We stayed for a week (they charged for 5 days and gave us 7 days) and spent 1-2 hours in the bottom ooze around low tide. Facilities are good with one shower, heads and free laundry. The dock staff are great and used to wrestling boats coping with the tidal currents. Location, location, location!!

Quiet but near everything, 2015-03-22
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

we stayed at the Charleston Megadock our last visit but much prefer this place for loacation and size. Jeff Davis and his staff, particularly George, could not have been more welcoming and accomidating. This will definately be our port of call everytime we return to Charleston. A Harris Teeter, free laundry and really excellent hardwatre store are just a few of the local services within an easy walk. Took off a half star from perfect as there is only one shower for all transients.

Great place and friendly, 2015-03-19
Captain: , Blackbeard, New Bern NC (138)

We stayed for a week and enjoyed it very much. Next to the SC aquarium and an easy walk to the free trolly into Charleslton. great place for playing ball with the dog, and free laundry.

Right in Downtown, 2015-03-06
Captain: , Hampton, VA (271)

Leawst expensive downtown Charleston marina. Clean restrooms and showers.

good position to explore the City, 2015-02-08
Captain: , Santa Maria CV (415)

We wait here for a good weather frame and had a good time. not a lot of movement in january and we got a good price. Very friendly and helpful staff. The current in the marina it selfs is not so bad as other writhe. If you wait for slack time - you will not have any problems.

Rock and Roll is Correct!, 2014-12-05
Captain: , Little River SC (586)

Great location to downtown. If windy conditions, I would go somewhere else. Dockhand was very helpful tying up, but the rock and roll was the worst I ever experienced, and it went on for two days nonstop.

Rock and Roll!, 2014-11-10
Captain: , Southport, NC (523)

This is a nice place to dock for a few days to explore Charleston. Close walk to the farmers market on Saturday mornings and close to everything Charleston has to offer. The dockmaster is super nice and there are not a lot of boats in here. Downside is one shower and shared bathrooms with the public using the Maritime Center. You do get a lot of swell in here from the shipping channel and from winds. Can't beat the free laundry and how close you are to groceries and the hardware store. A little tricky to dock in here both coming and going. Be very conscious of the current and wind. It is tight to turn in here and the wind and the water at certain times can make it interesting. Call ahead and the dockmaster will help you. You will be glad you had help.

rockin and rollin, 2014-09-14
Captain: , Cape Coral Fl (12354)

nice place small not to crowded friendly staff, down side little or no wake protection large ships comming to the port dock just upriver from here go by frequintlyu causing heavy wakes that send you bouncing about every 2 hours.

friendly service, 2014-07-23
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (70)

the rolling isn't great at times, but the serice and location and price make up for it. I will return!

Good location but not in a strong east wind, 2014-06-14
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (282)

Stayed for a couple of nights in early June 2014. First day was really a rock and roll time with a strong east wind blowing right into the basin. Second day got better as the winds shifted. Very good location for touring the city. If you are a biker, jogger, or walker you can take East Bay St right over the Cooper River Bridge and then catch the Water Taxi back from the other side of the river. Nice round trip as the Water Taxi will drop you off at the Maritime Marina.

Best place for visiting Charleston by foot, 2014-05-10
Captain: , Sanford, Fl. (887)

We stopped here again 5/2014 and stayed a week. I upgraded my start count. The ONLY real draw back to this marina is the rolling but that is offset by the closeness to everything and the quality of the service from the dock workers like William who go way out of their way to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable.

We stopped here again 10/21/2013. This is still the best deal going for visiting Charleston. We highly recommend Molly Darcy Irish pub and East Bay Deli for some really great food. It's a shame they don't dredge this so that the entire area could be available for for boats.

We stayed here for 2 weeks October 2012. It is excellent for visiting Charleston by foot. Very close to a very good grocery, plenty of restaurants etc. The marina is very shallow in some places where they dock you. It is extremely rolly due to heavy river traffic we could not have stood another week. But Charleston is well worth visiting and we will be back.

Convenient to Downtown, 2014-05-10
Captain: , Little River, SC (2037)

Stayed here again in May 2014. My previous comments still apply. Great friendly place close to downtown.

Nice facilities w/ floating concrete docks in good condition. The single shower facility is somewhat inconvenient but clean. The free laundry is a nice service but as you can imagine everybody wants to use it. There is a frequent line. As others have noted the marina is subject to periodic swells and wakes making it somewhat uncomfortable during the day. We found it OK for sleeping at night. Will stay here again when we visit Charleston. Dock people are extremely friendly and helpful in tying up the boat. One even drove me to the U-Haul center to get my propane tank refilled.

Nice stop close to downtown., 2014-05-04
Captain: , Port Sheldon (421)

Staff is very helpful. Downtown is an easy walk with alot of things going on.
The only down side is the marina is open to the Bay so you get bounced around alot. We will not be back unless they put in a sea wall out front.

Charleston Maritime Center, 2014-04-27
Captain: , Visalia, CA (380)

Close to down town, walk to a very good food market. Good resturants and historical district easy walk. Very nice people.

Not the calmest basin, but it's RIGHT DOWNTOWN, 2014-04-16
Captain: , Muskegon, MI (3132)

Great people work here, and it is so close to downtown that you can crawl there. On the downside, there's only one shower...but it's still my first choice in Ctown.

A great stop!, 2014-04-10
Captain: , new bern (317)

We found the wind, wake, and tide issues quite tolerable and enjoyed our stay. We were on a 38 foot sailboat. Smaller boats and power boats may feel the bumps more, but this is where we want to be when we are in Charleston!

Right in downtown Charleston., 2014-02-14
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (531)

We have been here for 2 weeks. Docking was a bit difficult as we pulled in on a windy day with the tide running. The staff was at the dock to help us with the lines so it turned into a non-event. This place is within walking or biking distance of a number of restaurants and attractions. Plus their is a free trolly that stops a block away and goes to the Visitor's Center. From there you can go anywhere. The rates are reasonable and with a BoatUS discount, they are downright cheap. Pumpout is free but you will have to move to the pumpout station, no in slip available. Free washer and dryer during office hours. Only a single shower, but with water available we just showered on the boat. WiFi signal was excellant.

Everyone here is very helpful. We had some mechanical problems and the dockmaster gave us a list of recommended mechanics to call. We picked one at random and he was there the next morning to fix us up.

Now for the bad news. This place is pretty much wide open to winds and wakes. Bring a lot of fenders. Everyonce in a while a really large set of wakes will come out of nowhere and rock the crap out of you. This is especially upsetting in the middle of the night. If you leave the boat, be sure that things are secured, if not you may return and find most of it on the deck.

If you don't mind the occasional wakes this is the place to stay. If it was not for the truly horrible wake problem, I would have given this place 5 stars.

Something of a Disappointment, 2013-12-02
Captain: , Whitby (400)

Spent three nights here at the end of November, 2013, based on the recommendation of a friend.
When we arrived, we were told we couldn't take on diesel as there was a boat at the fuel dock. The staff had docked a large catamaran at the fuel dock. I suppose the dock fees were worth more than the lost fuel sales.
The free laundry facilities are only available during "office hours" when the staff are present. Not particularly convenient.
There is a single shower for the whole facility.
All in all, the marina felt cold and indifferent to me as a transient yachtsman.
Next time I'm in Charleston, I'll look for somewhere else to dock.

Good access to town, 2013-12-01
Captain: , Wiscasset, Maine (290)

Excellent facility, more geared towards special events, but are very hospitable to boating guests. Coast Guard seems to target this area for boarding inspections. Free laundry is always a plus. Very clean and well kept.

Good price, Great Location, Very Friendly Staff, 2013-11-05
Captain: , Nashville (315)

We stayed here for one night and were extremely pleased. The staff gave detailed directions for approach over the phone and the dockhands were great. Great view of the bridge, close to downtown, clean facilities, free laundry. My only complaint would be the wake - there's some ferry traffic and lots of other boat traffic, but later in the evening it's a non-issue. Would definitely stay here again!

Great Place to Stay, 2013-10-29
Captain: , Callawassie Island SC (31)

We have stayed here many times....can't beat the price and location. Free laundry! A short walk to Harris Tetter for groceries. Short walk to stores and restaurants. COMPETENT dock hands. Although there are some wakes, it seems way less than on previous stays. I have noticed that the container ships are going by very slow, so maybe that is whY??? Anyway, highly recommend this Marina.

Perfect Location, 2013-10-23
Captain: , Anna Maria Island (573)

Located directly downtown. A little roll but worth it, Great staff although difficult to reach via telephone to make reservations. To be safe watch the current and arrive at slack if possible, it makes for a stress free time.

CLOSE TO TOWN, 2013-10-22
Captain: , East Falmouth, MA (1643)

The staff is good, the docks are good, the price is right, and its close to town. The current runs pretty swiftly here so docking can be difficult. The wake protection leaves something to be desired. It was somewhat bouncy from boats going by.

This Place Rocks, 2013-10-16
Captain: , Seabrook, TX (260)

I cannot say enough good things about CMC. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The floating docks are great, the showers, laundry, etc, are also first rate. It's a short walk to the historic part of Charleston. Grocery store, hardware store very close. Some say the current and the larger boat traffic can make the marina bumpy, but we found it to be ok. Were there some mignight ship wakes? Yes, but nothing outrageous. we will definitely be back.

Good but bouncy, 2013-09-25
Captain: , Houston, Texas (970)

Great service from the staff, good gas prices, handy location, but no protection from wakes in the channel and the current flows through the marina. It can be pretty bouncy until late evening when the boat traffic dies down.
Small book exchange for boaters. Free laundry. Nice bath and shower.
Directions to get to West Marine at 975 Savannah Highway:
Walk 3 blocks to the Aquarium.
Catch the 210 Trolley to the Visitor's Center.
Walk 2 blocks north on Meeting St. to Meeting St. at Mary St.
Turn left on Mary and go 100 yards to the bus stop.
Get on the #30 bus and tell the driver you want to stop at the Teeter Harris Supermarket on the Savannah Highway.
West Marine is next door to Teeter Harris.
The Chinese Buffet in the same shopping center is ok.
You can get bus schedules at the Visitor's Center.

Location is great, 2013-09-16
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (1145)

Update - This is our 4th time here and the marina is consistently good. Dockhands are great, power, water, facilities all good. And the laundry is free.

There's nothing special to the marina - no pool, tiki bar or restaurant. But the location to downtown Charleston is worth it. There's quite a bit of wake so if you can tie up so the wake pushes you off the dock. We were waked to hard, our fenders came out of the water and on the dock!

Great place, location and docks, 2013-06-28
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (4188)

Came in on SW wind, very protected for SW. However, bring lots of fenders. When the harbor is busy the waves roll in here. Nice concrete floating docks. Helpful staff got us tied up quickly (my wife has a shoulder problem). Free laundry, close to Harris Teeter grocery store, lots of restaurants nearby in down town. All within walking distance. Can take a water taxi to the Yorktown aircraft carrier across the bay (plus a submarine).

Great access to city, 2013-06-10
Captain: , Neversink NY (260)

Location and price are great even have a free laundry room!!!! with nice machines. Great access to the city and grocery & hardware just down block We have a cat so the wave action was not bad but i could see the Mono guys swinging.

Easy access, 2013-06-02
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1550)

Great place to get to the city and all it offers. Yes, you will rock and roll a bit but who ever said all waters are calm. Boat US discounts and free laundry make this a very ecnomical stop while passing through.

Location is perfect, but it is rolly, 2013-05-11
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

We stayed a second time at Maritime and we still like this marina for its location. In spite of the wakes that make you roll for sure in this marina, the postives of being so close to everything that Charleston has to offer more than makes up for the wakes. It is a five except for the rolling wakes. I like this marina.

The prior reviews are correct, but we still like this marina. It is a close walk to everything Charleston has to offer, and that is alot. If you want a fabulous dining experience, do not miss The Fig.

If you need service, call Wade or Chris at Diversified Mobile Marine 843-562-6688. These guys show up on time, give you an accurate estimate before you incur any charges, and their work is excellent. They did not track into the boat, they cleaned up afterward, so the areas they worked were cleaner after they left than before. These guys are good.

All in all, this is a small but great marina.

Too bad about the docks, 2013-05-04
Captain: , Trenton ON (668)

Would be5* because we were so impressed by the location, the price and the amazingly helpful staff, but the docks are open to wakes and any slight breeze cause a uncomfortable night. If you can handle the rocking and bumping stay here, if not pay the extra $$ and stay somewhere else.
Don't miss the market, the carriage tours or Patriots point.

Make sure they know which was your slip, 2013-05-01
Captain: , wichita falls (260)

Marina itself was great so was Charleston but they made us move from one place to another. If you are younger than 40 this actually might happen very often.

Love the location, 2013-04-30
Captain: , Friday Harbor, WA (490)

All the other reviews are correct about location. East winds are not fun..roll roll and more roll

Best location of any marina in Charleston, 2013-04-26
Captain: , Poughkeepsie, NY (6077)

The location near downtown Charleston and next to the Aquarium cannot be beat. The dockhands are top notch, they know how to handle boats in the current that runs through the marina, be sure to follow their directions on powering and rudder when you come in.

The WiFi is excellent with good signal strength throughout the marina (they have multiple antennas around the marina), I measured the speed at 3 Mbps. Did I mention Harris Tetter, an outstanding supermarket only three blocks away!! There's also a hardware store next to it and a Rite-Aid down the street. Be sure to explore downtown Charleston, only five blocks away starting at the old slave market which has just been renovated.

They now have two washers and two dryers, a great improvement and they are free! Be sure to take advantage of the free trolley service that connects to many downtown areas. Pick it up in front of the aquarium, runs every 15 to 20 mins.

We were here in 35 kt winds out of the east. We rocked and rolled for over 12 hrs. We never felt unsafe but it can be very unsettling if you're expecting a calm marina.

Great location but rocky and rolly, 2013-04-15
Captain: , Keyesport, IL (170)

The location is great. Easy walk to stores, trolley and bus service, access to Fort Sumter, the aquarium, the Yorktown. The marina staff is helpful and friendly. We have been here twice, now. The finger piers are short, even for our 32 footer, but we always come in stern to and have no problems getting on and off. Free laundry, book excahnge, clean restrooms. Only one shower, but it is very nice, clean, with a large changing area. The tidal currents can get pretty strong, which can be tricky getting to the fuel dock. But the fuel dock and the slips all run with the current, so if you know in advance how the current is running and where you want to go, it can be fairly easy to get in and out. If you get crosswise to the current, though, there is not much room. The slips can be uncomfortable with a southeast wind or any easterly wind, which can set up wave action inside the marina. Also, the large container ships can send a large wake that gets into the marina. We will be back when we want to provision or do some touristy stuff but will not stay long, particularly depending on the weather and possible southeasterly or easterly winds.

Winter stay, 2013-04-13
Captain: , Charleston, SC (135)

Relocating from Annapolis area we stayed for 3 months from mid Jan to mid Apr. We are on a 47 ft sail boat and tied up to a 30 ft finger pier with no outside piles. Northeast winds made it a bit rough and rather cold. We rocked and rolled with the passing of each tug boat. With 6 ft fraft I could not get in or out at low tide as there is a bump right in the middle of the marina and the currents are pretty strong. However, the staff was great, alway there when I was docking, the walk to the dog walk area is short, laundry is free, price is good, grocery store and all that Charleston has to offer just blocks away. I will be back.

Did I Hear You Correctly?????, 2013-04-11
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (180)

This happened to me back in late October 2012. I know what you are thinking why write it now. I have met several cruisers since then and they all said the same, write it up. I was cruising south for the winter. I wanted to stay in Charleston for a couple of months, November and December, and thought this would be a great marina being close to the Market Area and entertainment. I was in Charleston in October by car and stopped by to make arrangements to stay for a couple of months. I spoke to the person in charge and after I told him my plans he told me he did not need my business. I looked at my significant other and wanted to be sure we both heard the same thing. I asked him why he wanted to give up a sure income for two months and he told me he did not need it, he had plenty of transients. Needless to say I will not stay here in the future. We left stunned but went to Charleston Harbor Marina across the river. We have been here now for 5 months and have enjoyed it.

Location is a 10, wind/ current protection a 3, 2013-04-03
Captain: , Port Charlotte, FL (694)

Cannot beat the location, all of Old Charleston is within walking distance. Be wary of slips near the entrance, we are a 42 ft sailboat on a 25 ft finger pier, righti nside the entrance - wind is howling and we are straining our docklines to stay alongside the finger.
Marina employees are very courteous and helpful, very accommoating. Laundry facilities are free! Cruiser's book exchange upstairs by the office too.

Wow - what a mess!, 2013-03-13
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (624)

We chose this marina because of its proximity to the Charleston Aquarium. Had we received any communication about the tide flow and current ripping through this marina (which is not readily apparent in the morning mist as you approach until it is too late) we would have simply changed plans and moved to another location or waited for slack tide. Instead, we were directed in by the staff and told to turn left. Before we could change our mind we were entering the marina sideways (on a 53%u2019 motorsailer with no bow thrusters). Needless to say it was an exciting few moments. By some miracle from above, we were able to get turned around and into the slip unscathed and luckily without damaging any other boat, but only because the owners of the boat next to our slip were topside with fenders pushing us away as hard as they could with their feet! If that wasn%u2019t bad enough, we were then abandoned and had to use our winches to pull the boat close enough to the dock to get off and hook up our power. We decided to stay mainly because there was no way we could get out even if we wanted in the current conditions. In the end we were offered a refund, which we declined, but would not go back here again. We moved the next morning.

Smaller Nice Marina, 2012-12-31
Captain: , Howe Island, SLS, Ontario, Canada (427)

Good location with an easy access to historic downtown, stores, and restaurants. The necessary hookups, gas/diesel, pump out, restroom/shower, laundry ... all available and neat. The dock side closest to shore could be a bit shallow ... +/- 3 feet at low tide.

Great location, 2012-12-07
Captain: , Tracys Landing, Maryland (350)

Can't ask for a better location to explore historic Charleston. Within walking distance of everything. Free laundry is a plus too. On the downside, there is only one shower for the whole facility.

We also had some trouble docking, currents and winds were fighting us. Use caution and clearly instruct the dock hands how to help if it is windy.

Rocky but worth it!, 2012-11-26
Captain: , Richardson, TX (552)

We spent 2 weeks here during Thanksgiving. During most of the first week the winds were out of the NE and we rocked and rolled a lot. The staff offered us another slip when it opened up which was more protected and conditions improved immensely.....however the wind had also settled down by then. After the move, the only real wave action we got was from the ships in the harbor and that was always short lived. Not a problem for us, after all we have chosen to live on a boat, it's part of the deal! Everything else about this marina is excellent, staff, docks, bathrooms, laundry, price and as everyone else has said, the location is fabulous. We will be back but will check the wind before we venture in!

Great city access, 2012-11-15
Captain: , Stony Point, NY (852)

Very exposed to NE wind and wave action. We were put on a facing dock that is broadside to to current and wind as the weather would have it. Excellent help docking. Tidal rise and fall is considerable, so at low we have a view of the underside of the seawall and fixed dock, but at high we have a great view of the harbor and bridge.
Excellent access to town and shopping, museums etc.
Nice accomodating staff. Will come back, hopefully not in a NE blow.

Nice staff and easy access and convenient., 2012-11-10
Captain: , Live-a-board (350)

Popped in for some fuel, two day stay and to see Charleston. William and George helped us get the boat to the fuel dock and to our slip. Friendly and very helpful. Had good insight on getting some repair to our outboard as well. As mentioned, easy walk to Harris Teeters and downtown sight seeing. WOuld stay here again. Also offers a BOAT US discount.

Needed some work done on Dinghy outboard. Used Chris and Wade at Diversified Mobile Marine and they were very helpful and accomodating to our schedule. They left a card with the staff at CMC so if you need some outboard work I would start with these guys if available.

Charleston Maritme Center, 2012-11-04
Captain: , London (342)

Overlooked by most people. This facility is open to a northerly swell / winds and wakes from the passing cargo traffic. Protected inside on floating docks. Good walk or short taxi to downtown Charleston with restaurants and all the facilities of a large town. Recommend close pass and check the conditions, if OK then a good alternative to the other marinas. Currently home to the Spirt if Charleston tall ship.

Cheap and right in the action, 2012-11-02
Captain: , Gosport, uk (191)

We stayed a week at the discount rate of $1.50/ft pay for five nights and get seven. Apparently the rate reduces further into the second week

Two modern washing and drying machines are free and have multiple options you don't normally get in marinas.

Close to all the downtown action and Harris Teeter is a couple of blocks away.

You do get wash from tugs and shipping but not unreasonable and a couple of long springs mitigates most of the action. We noticed it maybe 2-3 times a day.

Line handlers a very good but there is cross wind/tide so be ready with mid-ships line first. There is lots of room inside and the slips are wide and long.

If you want super yacht facilities and super yacht prices then head to City Marina.

This is not a fancy marina but is friendly and helpful.

very nice marina., 2012-10-28
Captain: , N Fort Myers, Florida (516)

Very nice, small marina has good showers, restrooms, and a helpful, friendly staff. Shopping, groceries, eateries, and sightseeing are all within a few minutes walking distance, as are free trolleys. We were here during huricane Sandy, and did a bit of bouncing, but overall was relatively protected.

If in a sailboat, not a place to stay, 2012-10-16
Captain: , Woodbridge, VA (209)

Current and tidal flow is very bad- only had 4 foot at low tide and rocked hard all night. Marina only has 1 shower for everyone! Rate is cheap but not worth it.

The best place to explore Charleston, 2012-10-11
Captain: , Bear DE (694)

Staying here for 2 nights and enjoying it - nice floating concrete docks with a clean Shower. Very friendly staff in this marina. The price is just right. But aware that the inside Basin is very low - we meassured only 3ft of water at low tide.

Good Marina, 2012-07-24
Captain: , little river (269)

Stayed there for two weeks July 11 through 24, 2012. Staff very friendly and helpful, there to meet us and offered to assist us when leaving. There is only one bathroom but it is clean and in good repair. There were only four other boats so I never had to wait for a shower. The shower has a sign for marina guests only, but it doesn't keep the general public out. The biggest negative is the roll from east, south east winds, and from passing ships. Charleston is a very bussy harbor. We bounced around quite a bit.The price was reasonable though. Very close to downtown. Take the trolley from the Aquarium, its free. Eat at Husks on Queen St. Best meal I have had on this trip.

Excellent spot except during stong E quadrant winds, 2012-06-28
Captain: , JUMBIE 45 ft sailing catamaran (407)

We stayed for almost two weeks as we needed to sit out three tropical storms that came through. The location of the marina is close to town, restaurants and grocery shopping. Staff were extremely accommodating as we had planned to stay only 3 night and keep extending due to weather. Free laundry is an unusual treat for us liveaboards. The only negative would be the wave action in the marina with strong winds out of the eastern quardrant. The north side of the marina bears the brunt when the winds come from SE and we, being a catamaran and thus on the face dock, had enough movement with winds out of the E the NE to pop out all six fenders when one large wave hit the boat. Other than that, I would give totally positive reviews on all other aspects of the marina and staff.

Excellent experience, 2012-06-23
Captain: , yorktown, va (50)

Spent nearly 4 months at CMS this past winter and our only negatives were the occasional rocking from big ship wakes and only one shared shower facility. The location allowed us to walk to anywhere in "Ole Charleston" and is close to a free trolley stop. The staff of Jeff, Chip, Bob and William were most accommodating. The walk from "Ginger's Mercedes" to shore was very short as compared to the big marinas on the Ashley River. Dolphin played at the entrance EVERY day we were there.

Closest of all of the marinas to the things you want, 2012-06-17
Captain: , Cleveland (2083)

Update 6/2012: we intended to spend just one night here as we really enjoyed the stop last year. However, just after leaving the harbor we discovered a leak in the engine fresh water system and turn back. The harbormaster allowed us to just tie to the long face dock for however long we needed until repairs were made. After ordering a part to be overnighted, he brought the part to us the next day when it came in so we could do the repair and be on our way. We will stay here anytime we come to Charleston again!

Original posting: Stayed here 11/12 and 11/13/11. We found this to be much closer to everything than the marinas on the other side of Charleston. The Harris Teeter is the best grocery store we have seen since leaving Baltimore! And only 3 blocks away. Saffron was a great place for breakfast (also quite close) and a bakery that made me gain weight just walking through it!

Restrooms were excellent - assistance docking was, as previously stated, very helpful with the current racing through the marina. There was some rolling at night - not sure what went by but it is NOT a no wake zone and the waves do tend to come right into the opening.

Aquarium nearby + Ft. Sumter museum right next door.

Good location, great stop, 2012-06-13
Captain: , Marthas Vineyard (506)

We were quite happy at this marina and would certainly return. You do get some wave action from the harbor, for the most part its gentle, rocks you to sleep. It was windy from the SE when we arrived, quite rocky, but didn't last. The location is so convenient, its near the Fort Sumpter museum where you can take a ferry to the fort, near the acquariam where there is a stop for the free trolley that goes all over the city, but better yet its pretty easy walking distance to the historic downtown, plus there is a nice grocery and hardware a pretty easy walk away. Good services at the marina, including free laundry.

Great Location!!!, 2012-06-12
Captain: , Beaumont, TX (669)

Within walking distance to city center, aquarium, restaurants, city market, ace hardware, grocery store. Agree that downside is rocky rolly when ships go by but convenience of local location outweighs down side!

Power problems, but 4 stars for location, location, location, 2012-06-11
Captain: , St. Petersburg FL (187)

We had stayed here with friends on their boat a few years ago. Hard to beat for convience to downtown Charleston. We stopped here a couple nights ago in our trawler, headed south. Very rocky night from wakes and/or wind. Current & wind made for a tricky docking. We have twin 30 amp power, and had to plug into two separate power poles, after isolating the problem to the marina side, not our boat power. If the marina had been full, this would have been a problem, but we were one of only about 4 boats.

Great location & staff, but can be bouncy, 2012-06-02
Captain: , Fort Pierce, Florida (369)

Great location, rates (BoatUS) and top notch staff. Everything within walking including grocery & hardware store. Market Street a little further, but worth the walk. Downside is wakes from larger ships at night. Will still stop again on the way south and spend more time there.

Great location, rough water, 2012-05-29
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7375)

Can't beat the location for visiting Charleston. Next to water taxi to the Yorktown, very short walk to Ft. Sumter ferry and Aquarium, free trollly stop as well. Harris Tweeter (24 hrs) and downtown both walking distance. Small number of slips, about 18, so they can fill up with all that goes on in Charleston. Restrooms & shower always clean, although single shower for all was barely sufficient. On the negative, water will be rough in all but a west wind. We had several very rough nights leading up to Beryl's arrival at the end of May. Hope to be back again.

Close to town, 2012-05-23
Captain: , Grand Haven (470)

This is a very convenant location for access to the market. The dock hands are great, however this is the most that we have tossed around in our slip on our entire trip.

Perfect Location and Great Staff, But bouncy, 2012-05-21
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

For the $1.50 and everything is close by, especially tourist things, and Grocery. shallow in spots and rocky. Pump Out is easy to get to. Security is very good. We much prefer here to Ashley or City Marina for seeing the town. No currents in basin.

Nice location, 2012-05-18
Captain: , Old Saybrook Ct (250)

Stayed two nights 5/15/12. easy to find just follow the red range lights cant miss it. Depending on the wind and the current it can be a little tough getting into your slip, but they had two excellant dock hands to assist. Generally it is very clean and nice, baths /showers and free laundry. Easy walk to groucharies and Historic down town.

Outstanding location and service, 2012-05-07
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (386)

Agree with other reviewers. We stayed for 2 weeks in April, 2012. Took out our bicycles and were in the middle of historic Charleston and the Battery in minutes. We were also there when the wind came from the N and had a very uncomfortable night. But overall we loved it and would return for its convenience, location and fabulous staff.

Great marina in the heart of Charleston, 2012-04-30
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (1541)

We stayed 10 nights, and were very pleased. Great little marina with easy access to grocery, pharmacy, great restaurants and easy walking distance to historic Charleston and the Battery. Very friendly and helpful staff, dog friendly too - our dog got treats every time we were in the office. Good dog walking on the lawns next to the center and on the fields across the street. The aquarium and the ferry to Fort Sumter is right next door. The only reason I didn't give the marina five stars is that you do get some wakes rolling in from the ships, pilot boats, tugs and excursion boats. The bit of rolling you get is worth putting up with for the location. Great place!

A GREAT Location, 2012-04-19
Captain: , Essex, CT (1245)

A GREAT marina - now even better! Last week, they finally installed a 2nd set of washers and dryers - FREE!

Overall a great spot - right near the action! Excursion boats, water taxis leave from the marina and ships of all type & sizes go right by. The Maritime Center building hosts all types of (private) functions & activities. Something is always going on or going by.

A very short walk to Harris Teeter, a fantastic cafe/bakery (Saffron), Rite Aid Pharmacy, along with the historic downtown areas and restaurants nearby.

Unfortunately, the action also includes the wakes from container ships, tugs and excursion boats - but weren't too bad. Avoid N or NE higher winds though. Some shoaling in the basin too.

The staff is about the best we've seen. They even drove us across town to the U-Haul for a propane refill and refused a tip.

Great location to city, 2012-04-18
Captain: , Cairns, Queensland, Australia (121)

Stayed here for three days, great location to city and grocery Harris Tweeter, just 10 minute walk away. Close to all kinds of restaurants, closest Saffrons bakery, excellent food and decadent pastries and cakes. Sometimes can get very rolly with passing traffic and if the wind is from the N to NE. Keep away from the long centre dock, ask for a slip if possible. Friends had a roller come in and they rolled badly on the centre dock. Staff super helpful. diesel price was 4.099 a gal when we arrived on the 16th April.

Great staff/location, 2012-04-14
Captain: , Boulder City, NV (259)

Probably the most enthusiastic and helpful staff I've met.

Nearest marina to downdown, everthing is walking distance.

My first stay here (out of 3 trip) and will definitely make it my preferred Mrina in Charleston.

My favorite in Charleston, 2012-03-10
Captain: , Bristol, RI (938)

Small, friendly place with a friendly group of long term cruisiers (at least when we were there). Much more convenient to Charleston than the other marinas. If you don't want to walk, it's easy to call a pedi-cab. Costs less than a taxi and the drivers are fun.

Still the place to stay, 2012-02-08
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (1522)

Back here again on 2/7/12. It is just the best place to stay. Much better than the other marinas on the other side of Charleston. Easy Access, no need for a cab, a very complete Market that is open 24hrs and almost puts WholeFoods to shame. The center of town. Great dock help!! What more could you ask for.

THE place to stay in Charleston, 2012-02-05
Captain: , Topsail Beach, NC (480)

On our third trip to Charleston we finally found Charleston Maritime Center and loved it. So convenient to everything. Grocery easy walk. Downtown historic sites all very convenient to this marina. Dock hands were friendly and helpful. Restrooms were clean. Overall a great experience. We will be back!

Make Charleston Accessilble, 2012-01-17
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (435)

I love this place for its proximity to downtown. You can easily walk to many great services and restaurants. Yes, it does see a lot of movement when the wind is from the North but I think it is worth it.
The staff is always friendly and helpful also.

Good stop in the city, 2012-01-02
Captain: , Galesville, MD (481)

Dock staff were helpful getting the boat tied up. Charleston is a working harbor and the boat wakes are tempered by the harbors breakwall. Free laundry. Walk to Harris Teeter, liquor store and good vegtable market.

A rocking good time, 2011-11-28
Captain: , Greenville TX (580)

Great marina for closeness to downtown, great grocery and other shopping, and great staff. They hosted a Thanksgiving feast for all the cruisers in the marina.
The only negative is the lack of protection from wakes and waves. We rocked a lot.

Good location, lots of current and wakes, 2011-11-24
Captain: , Downingtown, Pa (111)

The marina is walking distance to downtown or pickup the free trolley at the nearby aquarium. Strong current, you may find yourself crabbing your way in. Dockmaster and dockhands are really helpful; they know what they are doing so get their assistance docking. Marina is small since much of it has silted-in so best to call well ahead during fall and spring migration periods.

Nearby Ace hardware is well stocked with great owners. Adjacent produce market and Harris Teeter supermarket with Starbucks. Nice small restaurant and bakery named Saffron just a few blocks away. Saturday morning farmers market and craft sale is worth the short walk or trolley ride.

Free washer/dryer open 8-5 but usually a wait due to limited hours and pushy live aboards. Understand they've gotten approval for additional washer and dryer. Single shower so likely a wait in mornings but unlike washer/dryer is available 24/7 with lock code.

Great Location, 2011-11-18
Captain: , City Island New York (600)

We spent 4 days here and the location is perfect. 10-15 minute walk into downtown, or take the free trolley, or a Pedal Cab ($9 for 2 people). Docking is tricky, ask for help, the dock hands know what they are doing. Long line for free laundry, did not check out showers etc. Harris Teeter 10 minute walk away, they let you take the cart back to marina. Avoid the tourist trap retaurants and eat at SNOB or High Cotton. Loved this stop.

enjoyed the place, 2011-11-12
Captain: , sassafras river, md (303)

Arrived at 7pm after a long day. Place was closed but they had saved a place for me, The dockmaster gave me excellant advise about entering and where to tie up. 2 crusiers helped me tie up.They have free use of the washer and dryer. I only waited 1 hour for its use (normal wait at most places. They have a dedicated shower for transients. It was spotless/clean/ and really hot water. Plenty of room to hang your clothes/ sit while dressing, and the shower wasn't the typical phonebooth size showers of most marinias. Great Location, easy walk to great growcrey store, and places to get a quick bit or breakfast. No car? No problem. there are Petal taxi right at the front door. With a little negoiations you can be driven to any place within reason for 5 bucks, mush less than a normal taxi. Want a ride to downtown, they take you for 12 bucks. No waiting. 14 local tv digital stations, ABC,CBS, FOX. Stong current and occational wave action from the busy harbor. But no worse than other marinas I've been to.

Good location, 2011-11-10
Captain: , No real home port. Cruising. (320)

Docking/leaving can be dicey due to current but not that bad if you prepare. Staff very accommodating. Location is very nice, easy walk to great grocery store and hardware store. Aquarium nearby.

Charleston Maritime Center, 2011-11-09
Captain: , Stuart Fl (300)

The attraction to this facility is the proximity of downtown within walking distance. It is on the Cooper River with a very strong current. Add 30 knot winds and docking is very difficult. Very lively dockage. Not fun.

If you need any mechanical work done try these guys.., 2011-11-04
Captain: , Portsmouth RI (60)

Quick note.. we got superb service from Marsh Marine, ask for Marshal himself..843-813-8181. We had a leaking dripless problem.. came to us at the Charleston Maritime Center.. quick diagnostic.. pulled things apart inspected, re-aligned, tightened up and back in business. $75. The other marina said after my description of the problem; we'd probably have to pull the boat, replace the part.. Bottom line.. an honest man. (Others wanted $85 just for the service call/clock starting when they left the shop). If he can fix it he'll tell you, if not he'll find you the right person/shop.

Captain: , Portland, OR (716)

Yes, the marina can get a bit rough in strong winds. Yes there is only one shower, and one washer and dryer - however the location can not be beat for being in Charleston. Marina staff very courteous. Winds out of the east makes it rocky, but we did not have issues with north winds.

Captain: , Black Earth, wi (63)

we had a hard time getting into our slip, though the staff were very helpful, and hadn't been there more than 4 hours when we had to ask for our money back and leave - the waves were so violent that my husband became ill IN THE SLIP and dogs were miserable. What a shame - it's a very nice facility otherwise and the staff are friendly and helpful. Would stay here if the winds are not out of the north.

Great location, 2011-07-03
Captain: , Beach haven NJ (510)

Very nice marina. We only stayed one night so can't comment on the rough waer in the marina as others have stated as we didn't experience this. We were able to walk into downtown Charleston and find numerous bars and restaurants within walking distance. Charleston is one of the nicest cruising destinations I have found amd this marina was right in the center of everything.

Centrally located, 2011-06-26
Captain: , Gloucester, VA (514)

Bob was very helpful in getting us tied to the dock as well as local info. We did a bit of rocking and rolling but it did die down somewhat at night when the winds died down. The rocking started right back up again early in the morning. Beware of southerly winds at this location. It is a short walk to the grocery store and all of the downtown. I would rate this marina 5 stars if it were not for the rocking. It definitely reminds you that you are on a boat. Use of laundry was free and 20# bags of ice were only $4. The bathrooms are very clean. There is only 1 shower but we didn't have to wait.

Charleston Maritime Center - Great Location!, 2011-06-23
Captain: , Pensacola (460)

This is our 2nd stay at the Charleston Maritime Center and we really enjoy it. It is within walking distance to historical areas of Charleston, a nice grocery store, post office etc. The staff members are all very nice, extremely helpful and proficient. There is also a free laundry facility and nice restrooms and a great view of the varied commercial shipping traffic. The only negative is the rocking, as mentioned by others previously, but there are so many positives!

Great Marina in Charleston, 2011-05-31
Captain: , Baltimore (317)

We stayed here for most of the 2010-2011 winter season. The marina is pretty small (only room for about 20 boats). It is in a great location, very close to downtown and a grocery store. It has a free washer and dryer (even though it is used quite a bit). The staff is friendly and helpful. It definitely gets rocky at times. You will get woken up on occasional nights by some type of wake (not that often), and you may also be there on a nights where it is hard to sleep if there is a storng SE for a long period of time.
There are separate men%u2019s and women%u2019s restrooms and one room with a shower. They have free wifi that is accessed by a code. It works about 95% of the time and they are quick to respond if there is an issue.

Dont miss Charleston, SC great place to visit, 2011-05-08
Captain: , Melbourne Florida (4616)

This is our second time here. The slips rock quite a bit, but the price is right and we don't spend much time on the boat here. The City is a great place to visit.

Can't Say Enough Good Things, 2011-05-03
Captain: , Buffalo, New York (1809)

Great location, and, warm, accommodating dock team. Chores were easy, given access to grocery, hardware store, wonderful restaurants, FEDEX, post office, free laundry at the marina. Lots to see and do, walking and by bicycle. Top rate farmers market (plus some) on Saturday mornings April - October, with local eggs, raw milk, and vegetables. Other services within easy access, too ---- hair salon, pharmacy, yoga studios, etc.

Close to Downtown, 2011-04-22
Captain: , Stratford, CT (658)

The Charleston Maritime Center is a great place to stop. It is walking distance to downtown Charleston, groceries, several museums, and more. The staff is great and they just remodeled the shower facility.
The only flaw is the hike up to the heads and only one shower for all boaters in the did get crowded. Free use of washers and dryers was appreciated!

I agree with most all the former reviews, except would add that the surge/rough water is only occasional and I enjoy the commercial traffic, especially the ships that transit the river. View of Cooper River Bridge is fabulous. After completing the loop, this is still our favorite city, and the only place to stay!

Good tricky at NW end, 2011-04-06
Captain: , Stuart FL (835)

Great Marina for touring, getting groceries etc. However we were assigned the second closest to land slip on the NW side. Very tricky getting in. The shallow water near land seem to reverse the current and pushes bow back towards the entrance. We bowed in and fortunately when we left there was slack water. If there had been much current I believe it would have been difficult to get out. Our biggest problem was a large sailboat with very long bowsprit in the dock behind us and therefore little room to maneuver.

This is certainly not a reason to stop here but for a single screw trawler would definitely try to get a slip nearer the river.

Location, Location, Location, 2011-03-28
Captain: , Solomons, MD (464)

Just spent the winter here. It is without a doubt the best location to see Charleston from and the staff is friendly and helpful, but there are drawbacks you need to consider. First, it is rough. You will read many euphemisms describing the conditions like "rolly", "surging", swelling", but in reality it's just plain rough. With a NE or ENE wind and opposing tide you can see one foot breakers rolling into the entrance and slamming boats against the docks. You better have your fenders out. Second, you are at a working city dock where the Water Taxi, Harbor Tour, and other assorted commercial operations come and go. You are on display for all the people as they wait for their tours and you will begin to appreciate what zoo animals feel like. Lastly, the marina is silting in rapidly. Several boats sit on the bottom during low tide and a small beach appears during extreme lows.

The two of us would weigh the positives and negatives each month over the winter and always decided to stay. You just can't beat the location as long as you are ready to handle the negatives. Charleston Maritime Center is a great location, but unless the city gets some dredging going it won't be around much longer.

One of our favorite stops, 2011-03-27
Captain: , East Haddam, CT (315)

The Charleston Maritime Center is a great place to stop. It is walking distance to downtown Chasrleston, groceries, several museums, and more. The staff is great and they just remodeled the shower facility.
Hope you enjoy it as much as us!

Inconceivable--> Charleston Maritime Center, 2011-03-24
Captain: , Richmond VA (281)

This is a great marina to enjoy Charleston from, off season rates are reasonable, good customer service and docks are well maintained. The Location OUTSTANDING, you can walk to the Aquarium, Charleston%u2019s main drag (King Street), Harris Teeter (open 24 hours), Fort Sumter, Library, and more. The seas have been noticeable calmer since recent changes to the harbor traffic. From what we heard this change is to help accommodate a public walk that will got completely around Charleston peninsula starting / finishing at the Maritime center. The only drawback to staying here is the currents and wind can make it difficult to dock. Now we time arrivals and departures with high and low tide, and that has reduced the issue.

Nice and Friendly, 2011-03-02
Captain: , Hampton, VA (389)

Nice and convenient location to downtown and to the Aquarium and Fort Sumter buiding. The commercial shipping docks are right next to the Maritime center so there is some rocking when the boats are pulling in and out.

I like this place, 2011-02-08
Captain: , millsboro DE (300)

I have stayed in this marina on numerous occasions on my way along the ICW Although it is not a working marina it is a perfect place to stay when visiting Charlestown it is close to everything including a real grocery store (2 blocks) You will not go wrong here

Nice place from which to vist Charleston, 2010-11-09
Captain: , Sarasota (1427)

11/09/10: USD$1.50/ft, $7/day for a 5 day stay.
Comments about boat traffic seem consistent - quiets down at night. If a strong Easterly was blowing, probably would be uncomfortable. Of course, you have similar results at the City Marina. Otherwise, marina is great - staff is helpful. Apparently this is the municipal marina in town - the City Marina is privately owned. Saffron's Cafe and Bakery is very near - great breakfasts and lunches - and a bakery!

Staff are great. It is rolly at night but location to downtown Charleston makes up for most the the wake action. Only one negative, shared bathroom for women and men is not cleaned well and needs tile repair.

Good marina if you don't mind rocken'n rolllen, 2010-06-06
Captain: , Buffalo (1154)

Location is great, staff are friendly and helpful, and the price is good too. But every passing boat will rock you, and there are a lot of them, from small runabouts to huge Container Ships.

Great Marina, 2010-04-22
Captain: , Louisville (301)

This is a municipally owned marina that has a very friendly staff, skilled in landing you with the wind and current conditions. Yes, is is open to some wakes of passing cargo ships, but the roll was minimal. Best price in the Charleston area, and the most convenient marina to the historic and market districts. Highly recommend it

Great folks, great price, great location, 2010-04-11
Captain: , Sea Cliff, NY (1075)

They found room for us an short notice, no problem. We were on the north face of the north dock and there was little wake action. So close to downtown and all it has to offer. Great supermarket- easy walking disatance.

The only thing keeping it from 5 stars for us was the dock we were on. There were a lot of non-marina folks walking by the boat as the spot we were in is next to a number of tour boats. Also, our boat could not be seen from the marina office. We liked the spot, but just be aware of what this particular spot lacks

All in all, a great stop. We will be back.

Rock and Roll, 2010-02-22
Captain: , Wilmington Deleware (330)

I feel we have to offer a bit of advice for any Top heavy cruisers considering to stay at the Maritime center, While the Staff at the Marina are very nice,The facility itself is well maintained and the location is Great for exploring Charelston(walking),However cruising on our 47' Atlantic (top heavy)our stay was terrible, we where woken many nights with violent rolling,This is a Major shipping channel so even on a calm night (wind & sea)The roar of Tug boats merely 100 ft away rushing to meet ships coming into port would set our boat in a beam motion that was violent, with all of the things we liked about the Marina we would never stay again, you see With the many nights little of sleep I was close to going postal on some inconsiderate Tug (drivers) note I did not say Captains since the majority of seamanship is the consideration of others?

Interesting place, 2010-01-28
Captain: , Newville (488)

We spent almost a wek here. pricing was fair; facility was clean & staff was more than helpful. Free laundry; clean showers & rest rooms. Town is just a walk away; as far, or as near, as you want to go. Great burgers at Moe's. Staff can arrange a guest pass at library for access to computers, etc. The only problem we had was experiencing heavy rolling during certain wind & wake conditions. We'll stop again.

The toughest review to write..., 2010-01-01
Captain: , MV Red Head (61833)

This is the toughest review I've ever had to write about a marina. On one hand, it is well deserving of the 5 stars I'm giving it. On the other, I'm so concerned that others will find how great this facility is and I'll never be able to come back because it'll be too crowded.

We stayed here for a month - December 2009. We got to experience everything this marina has to offer as well as the surrounding Charleston area. We've been to Charleston many times before but never had as much time to explore it. Staying at this marina is the perfect way to see Charleston. Everything is within a 10 - 60 minute walk.

Our typical day was to spend the morning doing work on ActiveCaptain and around the boat. After lunch we'd head out walking around the town. It was a wonderful way to explore and there is so much to do and see here. It's just impossible to list everything.

There is a farmer's market on the weekends at Marion Square. The square is large central area where there's always something happening. Surrounding the square for many blocks is shopping and some of the best restaurants you'll find anywhere.

Right across the street from the marina is a huge off-leash dog park. It must be 50 acres or more in size. Our two dogs met other dogs there every morning and played hard. They will certainly miss that field the most.

A Harris Teeter major-sized grocery store is 3 blocks away. It is rare to find such an excellent grocery store so close to the water. It's a real gem with exceptional quality food. There's a Red Box in the store too for single night video rentals. You'll also find a Blockbuster Video store 3 blocks away with free membership. A hardware store is across the street from the Harris Teeter with a good selection of parts and tools.

The marina itself is run very well. The staff is very helpful and make staying here easy. If you're expecting a package, they'll call you when it arrives. Touches like that are really nice. They are truly professionals.

The only negative thing about the facility is that is can get bouncy in certain wind/wave conditions. It's a small price to pay for the exceptional views of the river and bridge and the incredible access to shopping and siteseeing.

If you're coming to Charleston, I'd highly recommend staying at this marina during all times of the year. Well, except for when we want to come back!

The marina is in a great location, the commercial activity can be interesting and the staff is very helpful and professional. Swift current requires you to plan your arrival and departure carefully. We stayed here the last two weeks of October.

Great location, 2009-11-13
Captain: , Mystic, CT (270)

This marina is in a great location with easy access to popular spots in Charleston such as the Visitor's Center, Market Street, and the SC Aquarium. The staff was very friendly and professional. They tend to overbook the marina to maximize revenue and to accomodate everyone so you may spend a night or two on the fuel dock. It can be tricky getting into your slip due to the intense current. The marina is a bit lumpy in the strong current and can be noisy because of all the nearby commercial docks. The week we were there they were dredging just outside the marina 24/7 so it was very noisy at night. But it's great location and the weekly discounted price makes it worthwhile. They also have a free laundry which consists of one washer and one dryer.

Can be bouncy, 2009-10-16
Captain: , Worton (445)

Nice facility, close to downtown, market and college. Spent the night there with 15-20kts from the north, very lumpy. Boat US cooperating maring.

Stay here to visit Charleston, 2009-08-29
Captain: , South Portland, ME (537)

Charleston is a beautiful old city with character and grace. The Maritime Center is an easy 3 or 4 block wak to the French Quarter. Great shpping and browsing. Lots of history. The Maritime Center is a nice marina with good service and good docks. Fairly strong current getting into the enclosure but easy from then on.

Captain: , Chattanooga (327)

What a treasure, great weekly price, free laundry, close to everything you could want in Charleston; Harris Teeter, Ace, Rite-Aid, Historic District, Deli, Blockbuster, Bike rental, all within a one to two block walk. Does roll a lot, but that's boating isn't it?

Hate to leave, we are still discovering neat things right at our dockside. Great staff, they even send a midwife to the boat for deliveries, honest.

Close to everything, 2009-06-04
Captain: , New Rochelle, NY (1000)

I left the boat here in December '08 for three weeks and then stayed another week when I returned from a business trip. Everything is close by. The aquarium is well worth a visit. This Spring, I went back and stayed a few more days.

Well Kept Secret, 2009-05-14
Captain: , Kingsport, TN (470)

This marina may not be as big as the other two, but they make up for it with a great service attitude, and convienience to the heart of old town. The Harris Tetter grocery is in walking distance, as is much of the historic and restrant sites. Call ahead for reservations, because it fills up fast sometimes. Jeff Davis the dockmaster goes the extra mile to find you a spot, and help you get what you need.

great place with westerlies, 2009-04-13
Captain: , fairland (2653)

Directly across the cooper from the USS Yorktown, this is nice marina. It is small, but well maintained and the staff is very good. Closer to the best restaurants and shopping than the other side of the peninsula. But it sure does roll in an Easterly! With 15 knots or more, you need to find another place. The waves bounce off their seawall and makes a terrible place to be. Even though they just raised their price, they are still the cheapest marina in town, but it can be terribly bouncy.

Charleston Maritime Center, 2008-09-28
Captain: , On the water (1501)

Great little marina with wonderful access to downtown activities! The water taxi also pulls in here, jump on the taxi and ride it across the bay to the USS Yorktown. Not the place to be during a strong north/northeast blow, as we found out. Great staff that goes out of their way to be helpful.

Great experience, 2008-01-04
