Reviews for Charleston City Boatyard
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, 2017-06-24
Captain: , Bristol, ri (20)

Yard replaced faulty Webasto Evo 40 heater with a new one for boat under agreement for sale. They attached the heater to a very rusty old exhaust pipe and reported to the prior owner in their maintenance report that "the boat needs more duct work". Our surveyor could not inspect the heating system as it was removed for service. Thus, we counted on the yard to reinstall it safely. We used the heater for one night waking up feeling poorly and then the carbon monoxide detector went off. Removal of the exhaust pipe and inspection by filling it with water revealed a number of holes through which exhaust fumes could flow. The cabin air intake was immediately next to the exhaust pipe. I believe the yard should not have reattached the faulty exhaust pipe; not only was it visibly rusty but it also was melting a nearby bilge hose.

Charleston City Boat Yard, 2015-11-06
Captain: , Halifax, Nova Scotia (70)

Excellent facility to get work done or store your boat for the off season. Very clean yard, great staff. We had shaft seals adjusted and an alignment. Also a diver to check our props for damage. Spent a quiet night and we're on our way by noon the next day. Highly recommend!

First-Class Bottom Painting and Repairing, 2015-10-14
Captain: , Charleston, SC (10)

My Island Packet 380 was hauled, washed, inspected, and painted (bottom) on 9/23/2015. The work quality was excellent. The staff was friendly and very competent. Although I had only two coats of ablative paint applied, they used some remaining paint to apply a third coat at the waterline -- where it is most needed -- without being asked and without any extra charge! It is the best boatyard I have encountered in several years of cruising.

Need Six Stars, 2015-08-07

We have had a generator overheat problem for 3 years and 4 boatyards. They found the problem, repaired it (undersized seacock) and as I had to have access to my boat because of paralysis made certain that we were afloat by late afternoon. Helpful with local cruising information and so much more. A nearby restaurant supplied lunches that were great. This is a gem of a place with the added bonus of clean and large rest rooms.

Helped fix a botched repower, 2014-02-10
Captain: , Annapolis (20)

We limped in from Georgetown with a whole lotta shaking going on and we left with engine, prop and shaft set correctly. Barry Mercer is skilled mechanic with the experience of a cruiser. Our boat has difficult access, so I was impressed that he kept climbing back in the hole until the alignment, stuffing box, ...etc was just right. Oliver Humphries served the role of service manager with thoroughness and kept us on schedule. The friendly staff has great knowledge and they work well together as a team.

Professional Quality, Reasonable Price, 2013-11-30
Captain: , US East Coast (610)

Looked long and hard for aplace to haul out and store our sailboat for the winter months. Found this place and am extremely happy about it.

It's a little out of the way, but the yard is super-clean (even a mat under each boat!), staff are very friendly and professional, and facilities are excellent. Power and dehumidifier provided by the yard, and free overnights on the dock while you get ready.

So much better than most others.

Great yard, 2013-10-30
Captain: , New York (50)

Just got aboard our boat after stored for hurricane season. All work was done perfectly including new solar panels, LED lights, stanshion welding, waxing and bottom paint. Friendly service and the dehumidifier kept the boat mildew free after a long hot humid summer. This will be an annual event.

Great Professionalism and Service, 2013-05-17
Captain: , Lake Barkley, KY (20)

Spent a month there having windows replaced on the aft port side of our trawler. From Edward to Batten to Oliver, in the office, they were very attentive to our problem and did their best to expedite the work. They arranged for Doug Dow to do the carpentry work, and Luke Valleza to do the fiberglass work who were very professional and accomplished craftsmen. All the way down to dock hands John and Bryan everyone was great. For a boatyard it is very well kept and maintained.

This facility gets top rating; they were very responsive to our schedule, provided first class mechanical services, and were very professional and accomodating.

Good Yard, good people, 2012-05-08
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (10)

Good people doing the the work - Arthur in particular - did it right and educated me at the same time. They are pricey and stay after management if you aren't there, but the work was quality.

Good Yard - Recommend, 2011-11-07
Captain: , Charleston (105)

I live in Charleston. This is the second time I have used this yard.

The answer to most requests is "no problem".

I had my boat hauled in August in anticipation of a hurricane and left it on the hard until the end of October.

The work that was done was excellent and the price very close to the estimate.

They do not hesitate to subcontract when something is out of their area of expertise.

Recommend without hesitation.

Good work, good people, not cheap, very isolated, 2011-01-10
Captain: , Wilson, NY (432)

We were here for about three weeks as we had to have our Max-Prop taken off and sent to Washington State for a rebuild. Also ended up needing two new engine mounts. Everything is clean and neat and very well run. The folks stayed late on their last work day before Christmas to get us in when the tide came up and check the alignment in the water. No extra charge for 4 guys staying overtime.
We lived aboard the whole time. Only one restroom for men and one for women, tiolet and shower combined, but since not many folks live aboard it was OK.
There is nothing around there and the roads have no shoulders and are very busy, so you really can't bike anywhere.
Once our repair was complete they told us we could stay at their nice floating docks with power as long as we needed. (It was off season).

High Quality Yard, 2009-01-12
Captain: , San Francisco, CA (211)

A few miles off the beaten path but a high quality, professional operation. Pricing fair.

Pricey but good, 2007-11-13
Captain: , Charleston, SC (86)

I had a fair amt of work done...including metal fabrication, general repairs, bottom painted, and the quality is good. Done on schedule. Not inexpensive, but full service place and I was satisfied with the value received.
