Reviews for Carousel Marina
Rude and incompetent, 2017-07-29
Captain: , Pensacola,Fl (110)

The older man who apparently runs the slip and mooring assignments for Carousel Marina could not have been more rude and impatient on the phone when I called for a mooring reservation. I thought maybe he was just having a bad day. When we arrived we were given 'the only mooring we have', which looked small to us but they assured us our 50' trawler would be fine. And we were - for about an hour, at which point we were fending off the next boat over as we all shifted at slightly different rates. We called the office and talked with the same jerk who told me to shorten the pennant (already had) and then said it wasn't his problem. When I asked if there was another spot he could put us he huffed and said we could just stay and fend off all night. No concern for either boat. No offer to help find another spot in Boothbay. We checked around and Brown's Wharf Marina found us a very nice mooring with plenty of room. Same charge. When we went in to pay they couldn't have been nicer. Carousel, on the other hand, remained hostile and refunded our money only after we demanded it.
We suggest going to Browns - or anywhere else - before patronizing Carousel.

Wonderful Stay!, 2016-10-09
Captain: , Avondale, PA (448)

(Visited on 9/3/2016) We stayed at Carousel while cruising in company with friends on another trawler. We were given adjacent moorings to facilitate the sharing of a tender. Dockmaster responded quickly to calls on VHF and gave good directions to the moorings.

We and our friends had an excellent lunch at The Whale's Tale restaurant which is part of the marina. The seafood chowder there can't be beat. We also walked into town to sightsee with the rest of the tourists. We spent several hours oggling the many large sail and power boats that entered the harbor. It was a pleasant afternoon.

Other reviewers noted the free Trolley that runs through Boothbay and to the marinas. It should be noted that the trolley also stops near the Hannaford grocery if you need to reprovision.
We used the heads ashore and looked around the small marine supply store. We did not use the showers.

The harbor was quiet over night and it was very pleasant for sleeping.

Carousel Marina Boothbay, ME, 2016-08-30
Captain: , Eliot, ME (115)

Carousel has decent moorings out of the way of the "tourist" boat traffic.
Nice restaurant.
Laundry and showers a little expensive but well maintained.
Easy walk to "downtown".
Courtesy car available.
Also a town trolley. They ask for a donation for the ride.

Pleasant and clean, 2016-06-22
Captain: , Bucks Harbor ME (10)

On one of their moorings for a week while waiting for repairs. Showers and bathrooms are clean. Whole facility is well kept.
Mooring fee reasonable. Owner Jack is cheerful and helpful.

Great location, 2015-07-22
Captain: , Beaumont, TX (669)

Stout moorings. Easy access to downtown with free dingy dock. Excellent food. Fogged in for three days but a nice place to relax

Best marina EVER!, 2015-07-01
Captain: , Boothbay Harbor (10)

The location of Carousel marina is absolutely excellent! Spectular sunsets, great food, great people, great service. Best place in MAine to keep your boat, pick up a ball or rent a slip!

Good place to stop, 2014-11-27
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (380)

Can't say exactly why, but I like this place. Feels very homey. Moorings are reasonable, showers ($5) are clean and nice, staff is friendly, restaurant on-site or walk (or dinghy) to town. Not fancy but has everything needed.

Nice town to visit, 2014-08-04
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1164)

Competent, friendly staff. Floating docks in OK shape. Power is solid. Restaurant on site. Fuel is expensive for Maine.

Nice facility, 2014-03-31
Captain: , Roxbury ME (79)

Spent the night at the dock there. Friendly staff. parking can be an issue for vistors unless they don't mind a long walk.

not a good place to catch a mooring, 2013-10-10
Captain: , Salem Ma (790)

Aboslutely no service come with a mooring. They didn't even tell us where the dinghy dock was.

There is a fuel dock at the marina and this means all the boats coming/going to it rock you with their wakes.

It is a very long walk inot town.

Overall it would be better to anchor across on the other side away from the channel and take your dinghy into the town center.

Wonderful Marina!, 2013-08-31
Captain: , Cape Porpoise, Maine (250)

Boothbay Harbor has many marinas and we have stayed in many of them, but after yesterday The Carousel Marina has become our favorite. The dock hands were pleasant and knowledgable. The owner, Jack, was welcoming and friendly. The on-site restaurant, Whales Tale, had good food, attentive service and the friendliest bar crowd in Maine! We were welcomed immediately and made to feel at home. The marina store has many items, but when we couldn't find a certain electrical part, Jack gave us the courtesy car and directions to the closest Radio Shack. We loved it and will return.

Stayed at another marina but on the last day we learned this marina has a ship's store with a surprising inventory. The town hardware store does not come close.

Friendly Staff, 2012-12-12
Captain: , Portland (50)

All of the Carousel staff I have ever met have been very nice. I have never spent an overnight in one of their slips but I have used them repeatedly for filling up. Great place to go, and very convenient. Extremely easy to get in and out of.

Great place to stay, 2012-09-27
Captain: , Annapolis (264)

The mooring balls at Carousel Marina were easy to find and pick up. Their fuel dock is very accessible. You can dinghy to town and tie up at either the central town dock or the footbridge. Don't miss visiting the Maine Botanical gardens (via taxi). Check the schedule at the Opera House for musical entertainment.

Boothbay Harbor, 2012-08-28
Captain: , Seattle, WA (415)

Boothbay is a busy little town. If you like shopping this is your place. A very busy harbor we counted 8 tour boats going by our mooring ball between 3:30pm and 5pm all with their microphones going. There is a very small but nice Maine State Aquamium that you can dingy to. We learned a ton about Lobster Fishing at the Aquamium. Mooring buoys were $35 a night but you had to pay additonal for a shower. To busy a port for us.

Decent moorings for larger sailboats, 2012-08-18
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (92)

I had contacted several of the operations in the harbor to see who could handle my 52', 9' draft sailboats. Carousel was one of two who could do so. Professional operation managed by a former boat builder. No problems. No hassle.

Friendly marina, good facilities, well-maintained, 2012-06-21
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (1332)

No changes from my previous review. A fine marina in pictureque town that's a vibrant Maine tourist destination.

Although we hear that a change in ownership may be in the wind, during our stays owner Jack Coggswell has always been on-site to make sure things go well, and they do go well at Carousel--it's especially well maintained, has friendly folks who seem to enjoy working there, good electric, great water pressure, and floating docks which aren't pretty but are very functional. The ship's store is thoughtfully stocked with stuff often not found elsewhere. Didn't try to restaurant or bar this time around, but we did use the very nice courtesy car to avoid walking into town to visit Sherman's Bookstore & Stationery. Although we have not tried other marinas in Boothbay Harbor for years, I see no reason to go anywhere else!

Great Spot but Ouch!, 2012-06-01
Captain: , walpole, me (101)

We love the marina and the restaurant and usually stop for fuel but we went in on Memorial Day and Diesel was $4.50/gal - apparently a 40 cent increase from the previous week! Unfortunately we learned of the change after we filled up (the dock boy hadn't known)

Well run marina, 2011-08-07
Captain: , Castine, Maine (284)

Rented a mooring for $35 plus $5 for two showers. Facility was clean and service was great. Easy walk to town center or a quick dinghy trip to the town docks. No pumpout on site but town pumpout boat came right to our mooring.

Carousel Marina (named for the famous movie filmed nearby), 2011-07-01
Captain: , Stuart, Fl (360)

Nice spot with small store, Captains lounge and restaurant. Nearby you can catch the free trolley that makes numerous stops to Hannefords, YMCA, nearby Coastal Auto Parts, etc. but only runs until 4:30pm. You can also dinghy across the harbor to the town dock(max.3hr.)& be in the midst of souvenier shopping, restuarants, etc. Jack, onwer/operator is very kind & offered us the use of his car if needed.

Terrific Stop, 2011-01-26
Captain: , Swampscott, MA (10)

We stayed at Carousel Marina in July, 2010, and loved it. Jack is a great guy, and made us feel at home. I had to do some sail repair while there, and gratefully accepted the offer to set up a temporary loft in the yacht club area on the second floor.

The walk to town is pretty easy, and Boothbay is a fun take. Don't miss the "boat bar" at the Chowder House restaurant.

Great spot, 2010-11-26
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

All the other reviews are right -- this is a terrific place. Easy moorings, very nice launch service, best fuel dock in Boothbay and very nice staff. And yes, they really let you borrow their car to fetch groceries (otherwise a 2 mile hike). And Boothbay is a charming spot. A bit touristy -- but not too much. The hardware store, by the way, is incredibly well stocked. We enjoyed this so much we decided to come back on the way home.

excellent marina wonderful staf good facilities, 2010-08-24
Captain: , Rowayton, CT (181)

The moorings are easy to spot when you come into Boothbay because they are bright yellow. They have a very good lounge with coffee and donuts and a TV. Showers are very clean; but, they cost $2.50 per person. We paid $35 for our mooring, We have a 40 ft. sailboat. They do not offer any discounts.

Very nice operation., 2008-08-03
Captain: , Saint Petersburg, FL (181)

The moorings are well maintained and the land-based operations (store, showers, heads) are very clean and also well-maintained. We would definitely stay here again. They offered to move a lobster trap buoy if needed. Not sure of the price per foot, but our cost was $30 per night for our 49-Ft vessel.
