Least Expensive Option to Learn Sailing, 2011-03-01
Captain: , Berkeley Marina, CA (178)

Having been a member of CSC some years ago, I can highly recommend this truly great organization. If you are relatively young and have more time than money (which usually goes hand in hand), there is no better option around to learn how to sail.

The cost to be a member of this club is $75 a quarter. Once you are a member you can get all the sailing lessons you like at no further cost. As you pass tests showing improving levels of knowledge and competence, you are allowed to take out the various vessels in their fleet to sail in an expanding range of the Bay's waters. Initial lessons are performed in their great fleet of sloop rigged sailing dinghys. In my opinion this is the best way to learn how to sail. You are then able to move up to the club's fleet of keel boats. CSC also offers a fantastic range of windsurfing equipment. As your skills improve you are encouraged to take on the role as an instructor for the newer students - which is also an excellent way to further improve your own skills.

Because this is a volunteer run co-op, you need to be a fairly self-motivated person to make this program work for you. The quality of instructors will vary quite a bit and sometimes you might need to wait a bit longer than you would like for your next lesson. That being said, the opportunities provided to you by being a member of this club are huge. I highly recommend them.

If you are an older, more professional person with more money than time, you might want to check out OCSC on the other side of the Berkeley Marina. This sailing school is highy respected and has an outstanding program that is much more organized and professionally run.
