Reviews for Brewerton Boatyard
Help on a Sunday on a three-day weekend!, 2016-09-16
Captain: , Boulder (10)

Wayne helped us out of a jam with a problem prop on a moment's notice on a Sunday on a three-day weekend. His helpfulness and attitude as well as his knowledge saved our day and our 8-day trip on the Erie Canal. I can't say enough how great it was to have found Wayne and the Brewerton Boatyard. Don't pass them up if you need assistance with your boat!

Outstanding and Knowledgable Service, 2016-07-29
Captain: , Southport Queensland (300)

We have been having continuing problems with our new Westerbeke generator that was wrongly set up from new. We called Wayne from Phoenix on the canal and he offered to help if we could bring the boat in. Dan was on the boat within 30 minutes of arrival, fixed the problem and a couple of others he identified as well. The best service we have had in the US and a pity some of the supposedly highly rated yards on the ICW can't deliver the high level of service provided here.

Wayne & Ed Saved Our Vacation!!!!!, 2015-08-18
Captain: , Grand Island, NY (10)

We hit ground or a deadhead somewhere in the Seneca River section of the Erie Canal, heading East just past Cross Lake (beware, green buoy 389-385 area). We could barely make 5mph on one engine. We called Brewerton Boat Yard, past closing hours, and got Dan on the line. He directed us to the marina/dock and said they would haul it in the morning. When we arrived just before sunset we were met by a seasonal slip-holder who was sent out by the staff to make sure we arrived OK and had everything we needed.

Damage: We lost a shaft and 2 props and were looking at a week plus on the hard and a lost vacation. Wayne and Ed wouldn%u2019t settle for anything less than their best effort to get us on our way. In short, they were nothing short of amazing in everything. They way they dealt with us, their expertise in mechanics, and their accommodating nature were unbelievable. They pulled the shaft and props, plugged the hole, and put us back in the water where we enjoyed a few nights at port. He worked tirelessly to procure a props and shafts, and in short had us on our way to Lake Ontario in 4 days! Wayne and Ed saved our vacation.

In addition, Ed also troubleshot a few minor items in the bilge, and the boat runs like new.

I have worked with a lot of mechanics, and at home I have an awesome guy, but I have to say, Wayne and Ed were just about the best I've ever watched. Quick, efficient, and above all great to work with.

The repairs came in under estimate, they worked with my insurance agent, and the work was flawless.

Marina: The wifi was strong and reliable. The docks are a little old, but in good repair, the marina very well-maintained and the ship%u2019s store is excellent. Outside docking affords a fantastic view of the sunset. The fuel is ValveTect, the pumpout was in great working order. The only thing I would have liked to see would be a washer/dryer.

I can%u2019t thank the team enough. Wayne, Ed, Dan and Helen %u2013 you guys rock!

Great Little Marina, 2015-07-28
Captain: , Petoskey MI (240)

Stopped here after crossing Oneida Lake. The owner greeted us. He couldn't have been nicer. Restrooms were spotless! It's probably the closest marina to the restaurant across the bridge. Not a bad walk and Rosie's Ice Cream on the way back to the marina. Good stop for us. Nice fixed docks for larger boats. Easy access from the river.

Delightful owners -- facility needs some TLC, 2015-06-28
Captain: , Essex, CT (1675)

The owners, as stated earlier, couldn't be nicer. And their ship store is amazing -- I doubt you could ask for a spare part without them finding it hidden somewhere on their shelves. However, the docks need a bit of care -- we were right up against the driveway so felt like we were docked in a car park. And sadly the restrooms aren't the best and now laundry machine. That said -- if you can get an outside dock -- you'll love the personal touch by the owners.

Oswego closed down for a week and a great stop, 2015-06-17
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (935)

On June 15, the Oswego Canal closed due to high waters for about a week. When i looked at reviews for this marina there was only one for the past year. Made me nervous... so tried to go to a sponsor AC marina but they couldn't give us dockage so we stopped here. I am really glad we did. They were right on the dock for us, put us between a couple of other nice boats and in front of a house so we really didn't feel like we were in a boat yard, gave the owner a ride to Syracuse to get a rental car, helped us get a cummins mechanic for a problem we had, and am having work done on a water pump problem. Couldn't ask for more. I'll stay here where transiting this area on other deliveries. I hope others will too. Walking to a restaurant is a hike although there is a little place right at the main street several blocks away.

Full-service yard, 2015-05-22
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1120)

As advertised--a yard, not a marina. We were stuck there 3 nights due to weather. Owner adjusted our nightly rate after-the-fact to a more favorable one for us! 24 hour access to bathroom facility, but no laundry. Town is very pedestrian unfriendly.

Top Notch Marina!, 2014-06-13
Captain: , Venice, Fl. (919)

We wintered Charis here. Wayne and Helen and Ed are wonderful, gracious people. Never a hesitation to help us get things ready to continue cruising. Deep water dockage. Good ships store. A few restaraunts a couple of blocks away.

Good winter storage, good workmanship, close to town, 2014-06-08
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (6425)

We left Adagio for winter storage in un-heated shed, no problems. Wayne made a nice starboard box for our spare prop, makes it easier to store or carry around. Close to town for a couple of restaurants, shopping is further out. Wayne also gave us a ride to the train station when we need to shuttle a vehicle.

one month stay, 2013-06-22
Captain: , Alex Bay, NY (431)

Wayne and Helen are excellent hosts and owners of the marina. They will go out of their way to help you. Deep water docks for boats up to 80 feet, good power, clean restrooms, Walking distance to some decent eating places...very little rocking on the river...its about a .5 mile from the west end of Onieda Lake

Everything is ship shape, 2013-04-10
Captain: , Brewerton, NY (489)

Coming up on fifth season keeping my Nordic Tug at Brewerton Boat yard. Facility is neatly maintained and well run. Good Ship's Store, and Helen offers a nice complimentary DVD library! Wayne Carroll's service is highly regarded by just about anyone you talk to on Oneida Lake.

Good place, good people, 2013-01-31
Captain: , Gloucester, MA (806)

Nothing fancy, but fairly priced with great service.

Service with a smile, 2012-08-28
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1459)

Stopped here for Volvo service in 2005 while on the loop. Now 7 years later needed a gear oil change and could think of no better place. Same great folks, same great service. Wayne and Ed had us out, serviced, and back in the water in time to catch a smooth crossing of the lake before weather arrived.

Good place to stop/repair, 2012-08-17
Captain: , Powder Springs, GA (214)

Fuel is a little higher here than at others, but the service is outstanding.

We Liked It, 2012-06-08
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1328)

Bought fuel and stayed here 6/5/12. They have several large boat slips for transients. Adequate rest rooms/showers. Walking distance to town. A couple of restaurants which we did not try.

Wonderful, knowledgeable people, 2012-04-09
Captain: , Clayton, NY (645)

As new trawler owners, we were headed west on the Erie Canal and in Canajaharie we noticed a sever leak in the area around the shaft (which is encased in cement). We called Boat US, but there aren't many marinas along the eastern portion of the canal. Other boaters suggested Brewerton Boatyard as a good place to stop. We had installed 2 new bilge pumps before we left Port Washington for our trek home to the fingerlakes. The new pumps did their job and kept ahead of the water coming in and we made it to Brewerton. Wayne removed the propeller shaft and found an 18" slice in the shaft tube. He said there was a slight bend in the shaft that in time wore through the stainless housing. He also rebuilt the stuffing box and cutlass bearing. They looked brand new. I could not believe they were the same pieces that had been rusty and covered with green slime. He did this all for hundreds less than the estimate he had given us.
We never made it to the Fingerlakes. We felt so comfortable at Brewerton that we did our complete rebuild project there.
We travel to the 1000 Islands for the summer, but we return every winter to Brewerton for our winter projects. What we can't handle, ourselves, we feel very confident in Wayne, the owner, and Ed, his chief mechanic.
There is also a well stocked marine store which is very helpful when you are in the middle of a project and you need something.

I Can't Say Enough, 2011-10-16
Captain: , Las Vegas, NV (143)

In 2004 on our cruise to Florida from the Great Lakes, this stop turned out to be one of the most important stops of the whole 3000 nautical mile trip.

While tied at the free town dock just the other side of the railway bridge, we received a call from my mother-in-law that my wife's father had suffered a stroke and was hopitalized. We had to get to the airport in Syracuse immediately and fly out to North Carolina.

I contacted Brewerton Boatyard, told Helen our situation and that we would need to leave the boat for an indeterminate amount of time. She told us to pull around immediately and would meet us at the dock to help us tie up.

Accomodations aside, you never know who you are going to meet while cruising that will have a profound impact and change your life. This was the case with Wayne and Helen at Brewerton Boat Yard.

We were prepared to tie up and get a cab out of town. Helen would have none of it: She helped us tie up, made arrangements to borrow a car seat from a friend for our toddler daughter, and drove us herself straight to the airport in Syracuse for our flight. If that's not enough, she insisted on picking us up when we returned, while Wayne came aboard everyday to check on our boat and feed our cat!

Everything turned out okay with my father-in-law and we returned in a week. I paid our slip fees, and in gratitude, tried to buy every boat/engine part possible from Wayne (he's a dealer for my Westerbeke engine), but he would only sell me the parts he had in stock. I couldn't even give him my money, for which he so rightfully earned!!!

They were both on hand to help us shove off to continue our journey. Helen even had a stuffed animal gift for my 2 yr old daughter, which she named "Bear" in honor of their dog. She still has that stuffed toy today as a reminder of two selfless people who helped a family and required nothing in return.

There are a lot of options on this section of the canal before Lake Oneida. Not all of them have good reputations. Some are even down-right nasty on the VHF. All I can say is, if you want to support an honest people who'll go out of their way to help someone in need, Wayne and Helen deserve not only your business, but your respect as a boater.

Now, six years later, I have only fond memories of a couple of complete strangers who stood up and helped a family in a time of crisis. During our cruise, we saw fabulous sunsets, terrific historical grounds, city sights to be remembered, but Helen & Wayne seriously stand out as two selfless individuals serving the boating community. I rarely make a call-to-action of any one, but I implore all boaters who transit this area to pay homage to the fine folks at Brewerton Boat Yard. I've traveled a long way on America's waterways and have yet to find such accomodating and generous folk at this.

Excellent Stop, 2011-09-12
Captain: , Everett, WA (65)

This is our fourth stop here and Wayne and Helen are always helpful and welcoming. They have taken care of our problems with knowledge and skill. They have also provided us with a nice place to wait until the canals around us open after Hurricane Irene and TS Lee.

Brewerton Boatyard, 2011-08-23
Captain: , Lake in The Hills, Illinois (542)

Wayne is the owner / manager and is one of the nicest people we have met on the canal. The marina was extremely quiet and a very convenient spot before crossing Lake Oneida. Restaurants and bars are a short walk from the marina.

Brewerton Boatyard, 2011-07-06
Captain: , Hampton, VA (389)

A nice quiet stop over a very buisy 4th of July weekend. It was a short walk over the bridge to see the 4th of July fireworks. All of the people we met were friendly. We felt like we were in our own hometown. Helen and Wanye run a great marina. The ship store carries a large stock to meet your needs.

Excellent Service, 2011-06-07
Captain: , Bay Point Marina, Marblehead, OH (180)

I just stopped to buy some oil and saw that the Ships store had alot of inventory of parts. I asked Wayne about the linkage problem I had on the port tranee and he looked at it and fixed it in an hour. He had to fabricate a new part using a new rod, rethreading and tow new ball and socket fittings. It works perfectly now and he did this quickly with much expertise. I highly recommend this boatyard. They have an extensive repair shop and I really don't think there is nothing they can't handle!

Brewerton Boatyard, 2009-08-30
Captain: , Patterson, La (1441)

We came in on a Friday just before noon for fuel and a head problem. They installed a new one at reasonable cost for it and labor, did this immediately so that we were not delayed at all.
Jim, the service manager, his assistant Drew and the dock boy Pat could not have been more professional and competent.

Great place,full service yard, 2009-05-31

Excellent Service, 2009-03-28
Captain: , Brewerton, NY (10)

The owners of Brewerton Boat Yard are professional and exceptionally courteous. We keep our commercial vessel at this marina during the off season and anyone who earns their living in the maritime industry knows, leaving your vessel there is not a trivial decision. I would recommend the boat yard to anyone in any size vessel be they private owners, or mariners.

Good stopover, 2007-07-21
Captain: , Kiawah Island, SC (152)

The people here were more than accomodating. They took us to a hardware store to buy supplies and also were able to work on the boat without delay. Wayne and Ed were very helpful. It was only a short walk to restaurants.
