Some resort amenities are available - Pool and tennis. Blockbuster 0.5 mi walk (across from K-Mart, plus Bank of America, UPS Store, USPS, clothing stores, Tilden dive shop). Captain Hook's Dive shop is very good and they will pick you up.

Confusing reviews, but this place is great, 2016-08-11

Don't confuse this place with Sombrero Dockside, which is no where as nice as this. And yes, back in 2014 this place may have needed some repairs.
We stayed here for almost 2 months from May 2016 to early July 2016 & loved it. This was the off-season in the Keys, so Scott the dockmaster gave us a super rate, and pro-rated the monthly rate for a partial month. The slips on the west side are taken mostly by long-term liveaboards, and the docks are not in pristine condition. But the shorter-term transients are put on the northern seawall with a side tie, and this dock is in excellent shape. Power, water is great, & weekly pumpout by Scott ain't bad neither.
The property is still being improved - the motel resort rooms while we were there. But the pool area & tiki bar have already been upgraded & are one of the nicest we saw in the Keys.
The biggest asset is Scott himself, who bent over backwards to assist us when needed (our refrig went out while there). He walks the docks to check the boats several times a day (we were gone for a month for a family funeral, so Scott came aboard to water our plants).
The location can't be beat - closest to Publix, liquor store, nature center, Sombrero Beach, etc. Anyone coming to Marathon needs to check out this place - whether staying for a week or for several months.

We stayed here from January through early April, 2014.

The good: great location, very close to Publix, Walgreens, CVS, K-Mart, Winn-Dixie, McDonalds, Wendy's, Home Depot.
Protected marina, cable TV, wi-fi (better coverage on the seawall than in the slips), pool (average), tennis courts (good), free ice, Dockmaster Nick is very helpful, golf course across the street.

The bad: the docks are in disrepair, as is the whole facility. Rumors of new management and capital infusion, but not a lot visible yet. We had to call Comcast to come out to get cable working. The Tiki Bar finally opened, but so-so. The on-site restaurant is closed and don't know if there are plans to reopen. For a boater, it's adequate, but it's not a resort. Like everything in the Keys, it's not cheap.

The ugly: Showers are password protected but bathrooms aren't so people who are not condo residents nor boaters can use, and bathrooms are frequently very mess. Unairconditioned. The laundry is $3.75 a load to wash, not enough machines, frequently broken.

Bottom line--we may be back next winter because even if it's not great, it's got more going for it than some other marinas.

This marina/resort/condo complex has been through many owners, managers, and receivership. Upkeep is minimal. The pool is nice, the location is very convenient, but the new management has no clue how to run a marina. The young dockmaster works hard and tries to please, but he is hamstrung by inexperience and lack of knowledgeable management. The docks are in poor repair and have been so for at least 10 years, including some unsafe areas. There is a tiki bar, open at times, and a restaurant which was OK years ago but has been closed for years. The laundry is inadequate for the demand of the hotel guests plus condo owners plus boaters. Many boaters have returned year after year for the location and the friendships we have made, but Hyatt is rebuilding the old Faro Blanco and when that's up and running, this place will probably go under...again.

Stayed two weeks in late January. Pool and tiki bar were open and in good repair. The docks need work, but were adequate. We had visitors, so had a car, but the walk to Publix and other shopping was easy. Dinghy to anything that Boot Key harbor has to offer - restaurants, beach etc. Nice to walk around the golf course, and good bike paths.

The Tiki Bar is open. They have Happy Hour from 3-6pm, with 2 for 1 beer and well drinks. The crowds here have increased since Sombrero Marina closed their bar.

Hot dogs and hamburgers are cooked on a grill, at least during Happy Hour.

Dockmaster is very helpful. Resort and especially the Marina are in need of major repair. Good location for shopping, Publix, Wallgreens, and K-Mart within walking distance.

Update Jan 2011: The facility continues to show that the owners don't have enough (any?) money to continue to maintain the facility. The restaurant here is closed - rumors are it may re-open. Staff is down to a very few people - the dockmaster also mows the resort lawn and collects the trash, but still does the weekly pump-out. Two star rating still in effect
The previous reviews were accurate, but things have changed. There are new owners (again) whose focus appears to be on making the land facility more attractive (paint, palm trees, new sales office, and new entrance) in order to increase condo sales.
The restaurant is OK if they aren't busy - if there's a crowd, chaos reigns - very slow service, wrong orders, and cold food. The restaurant manager was recently let go and no one has replaced him. The aforementioned dockmaster, Kyle, was also let go and has not been replaced. There is an acting dockmaster who works part-time. So, if you need docking assistance, plan your arrival accordingly. There is still a free weekly pumpout. The marina is close to everything in Marathon - you can easily walk to the Publix and there are bike trails along the roads, including Route 1.
However, the docks, finger piers, and pilings are in a shabby condition with many loose boards and wobbly pilings.
The bottom line is that the new owners haven't shown any interest in improving the marine facilities, which we suspect is keeping the place afloat (pun intended). It could be a real ,world-class facility instead of it currently being a third-world-class facility.



Most value for the money, 2009-08-19

This marina is part of a resort with hotel, cottages, pool, & restaurant. Once a nice marina that fell somewhat into disrepair, it is in the hands of new management (in last 6 months) and improvements are underway. The same is true of the onsite restaurant, Latitudes. The current restaurant management is doing an excellent job – food is fantastic (especially the pizza), and they have many different specials during the week you should check out. The restaurant is next to the large pool area with a Tiki bar. You can order from the restaurant at the pool.
The marina is in proximity (1/4 mile) to the main shopping area in Marathon – Publix, Winn-Dixie, K-Mart, McDonald’s, Tilden’s Dive Shop, Post Office, liquor stores, Blockbuster Video, Payless Shoes, UPS Store, and a couple clothing stores. The laundry area is not the nicest (a bit run down - in an area under one of the hotel buildings), but there are plenty of machines to use, so you can get a lot of laundry done at once.
The dockmaster, Kyle, is extremely helpful & professional. We took the slip at Sombrero Resort in lieu of the Boot Key City mooring field, because we had to leave the boat for 2 weeks unattended. The dockmaster did a great job of keeping an eye on the boat and making sure everything was alright. He is also a good source for local marine services.
We were there for 5 weeks and barnacle growth is significant, however we did not experience any build up of algae in our strainers (even though the a/c raw water pump ran 24/7). The resort does not have facilities for used oil, filters, or hazardous waste; however, you can dinghy them over to the Boot Key City Marina where you dispose of them for free. Dockmaster performs pump out on a weekly basis, at your request, at no additional charge.
One thing you must check out is the daily Cruisers Net – Ch 68, 9am every morning. It is great for finding out what is happening in the area, buying/selling/trading stuff, and making connections with other boaters in the area. We were able to connect with another family with children onboard this way.
All in all, we really enjoyed our stay here. The people were very friendly, and we enjoyed getting to know the area. We will definitely stay here again on our return trip.

This facility has changed hands and the name is now Sombrero Resort & Marina. This is our first season here, and so far we are pleased with the marina as well as the staff. John the Dockmaster is focused on his boaters and their needs. Infrastructure needs TLC and we understand that major renovations will be made this summer. Otherwise the property is well maintained and staffed.
