Reviews for Block Island Boat Basin
Hate them on VHF radio, 2016-08-26
Captain: , Portsmouth, RI (10)

Their dock hands have to learn proper VHF radio operations and etiquette. They never switch off channel nine like every other marina in the North East. I%u2019ve been sailing in the area over the last few weeks and every day you hear endless chatter between their dock hands and incoming boats about dock assignments, fenders, lines, reservations, etc. Some boaters seem to need a lot of help and the boys keep chattering on using channel 9. I%u2019ve heard them from Newport, Jamestown, Fishers Island, Sag Harbor, Montauk, Cuttyhunk, Martha %u2019s Vineyard and more. It%u2019s distracting, annoying and very unprofessional. They should be ashamed to represent themselves as a professional marina. I want to do the right thing as a mariner and monitor channel 9 all day, but BIBB makes me want to switch it off.
%u201CSwitch and answer channel 10%u201D (or 7, 8, 11, others) is all they need to say. Stop the madness!

Excellent Service!, 2016-07-27
Captain: , Westport CT (170)

Just spent 3 days at BIBB...first rate staff...very helpful and knew what they were doing. Great dog friendly place that also has store, bike, car scooter rental all right there.
Food at the Oar and mudslides were great. Walking distance to Paynes donuts in the morning and Dead Eye Dick's. First choice in Block

Off Soundings Spring 2016, 2016-06-15
Captain: , Hampton VA (140)

Great docking, plenty of water, but make sure you have long bow lines, pilings are almost 50 feet from dock so with a 34 ft boat you will need longer bow lines.
Docks in great shape, staff friendly and helpful. We are from VA and helped a friend race his boat here.

Labor Day weekend getaway, 2015-09-06
Captain: , New York (241)

Stayed here 3 nights leading up to Labor Day. Couldn't stay the entire time because they were booked up so if you want to stay over a holiday weekend make reservations early
Other reviews were spot on. No rafting but very tight slips. Bring bumpers.
There were a lot of regulars there and they all made us feel right at home. Several boats had trouble docking in the wind and all the neighbors chipped in to help.
Oar resturant has good Sushi.
I was able to make my reservation over the phone and they took my credit card.
I took one star away because of the bathrooms/showers which were part of the resturant and locked up after the resturant closed. We also showered on the boat
If you don't like rafting this is the place
We'll be back

mixed feelings . . ., 2015-08-25
Captain: , Pt Pleasant Beach, NJ (10)

Definitely an experience . . .
PROS: well-located with proximity to ship store, bar/restaurants, bike rental, and town a huge plus. Good dockhands.
CONS: The token-operated showers are part of the bathroom for the bar (read: crowded and dirty). We showered on our boat. Reservations are done the old-fashioned way--via (snail) mail with a personal check only.

Awesome place to visit, very nice marina too, 2015-08-19
Captain: , Rochester, NY (200)

Nice Marina, Oar's Restaurant good food, can get very crowded though.
Short walk into town, lots of shops and restaurants. Moped rentals and bike rentals to get around too. LOVED the Block Island experience! Great dinghy exploration too.

Nice Marina, 2015-08-07
Captain: , Pawtuxet Cove (11)

We stayed here the week of the 4th of July for 5 nights. I took one star away because the dock hand neglected to tell me to back in. There are no fingers between slips so you have to back in. =) Spun the boat around and had a great stay. Heading back this week!

Terrific disappointment, 2015-06-20
Captain: , Portland, Oregon (496)

Date of our stay: May 28 and 29. We had read about the marina and the launch service and, yeah, there were only two transient boats in the mooring field but, the day we arrived, the launch driver was no where to be found and we could never get a ride in that day. We launched our dinghy and gave the captain of a sailboat near us a ride in but there was no launch service. To be fair, we were told by two different sources that there had been some %u201Cmanagement changes%u201D at the marina so they may not have gotten their act together yet this early in the season. They only had two docks in the water and the one we stopped at for water wasn%u2019t even permanently connected to the pilings and they were still putting moorings out. The moorings were scattered helter skelter and one of them was so close to the channel that the boat on it hung out across the channel. And, the store was closed for renovations. No word when it will reopen. The Oar restaurant was good though.

Best on B I, 2015-06-07
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1459)

The best marina on the island, no doubt. Very frendly and helpful staff. Elec is being updated. Easy access to town and if you are hungry, the Oar is just up the dock. Hate to leave this magical island, easy going locals and just a fun place.

ships store is very nice, 2014-07-13
Captain: , Milford (439)

we stayed on town mooring but landed here with the launch service. the store has lots of selections and lots of food that is cheaper than the grocery stores "in town"

Classic BI, 2013-10-31
Captain: , Mt. Sinai, NY (243)

This marina is BI thru and trhu. A great place to stay with great people. No rafting here! Watch the volatge on Summer weekends, more often or not you will only be getting 205V on a 220V line. Great store on site along with the famous Oar bar. Bike and car rentals on site as well.

excellent staff, 2013-06-02
Captain: , Jamestown, RI (277)

I arrived late on a Friday afternoon in early June. Had some trouble raising them on the radio, so the local Harbormaster ran in and got someones attention for me. My slip was in between two large and well kept Sportfishers, and since my sailboat with folding prop backs like hell, I was a little nervous. Dock hands did an excellent job helping me into the slip with a 25kt cross wind. I guess June is still the "off season", as there was plenty of room, and not all of the docks were in yet.
Facilities seemed nice enough, although I did not use the showers. From speaking with the owner, there is limited room for deep draft boats, so reservations would be needed well in advance.
A great spot, within stumbling distance of one of the best bars on the island (the Oar).

Best Marina on Block, 2013-03-27
Captain: , Snug Harbor, RI (30)

Only marina to give you your OWN floating dock. Stern-to tie up.
Ship's store & The Oar Restaurant at top of main pier. Very friendly & helpful staff. Scenic 1.5 mile walk (or cab ride) to main town.
Close to miles of ocean beaches. All in all, a great place

Living on island time, 2012-09-07
Captain: , Norwalk, CT (32)

Stayed on a friends mooring in the Great Salt Pond from 8/13 - 8/18 and used the BI Boat Basin dingy dock and beach to get to and from shore. Easy accessibility and had a provisiong store right at the dock. Also the OAR which is right there is a great place to relax and have drink at a picnic table or at the bar. Bathrooms are decent just wish there were more of them. It was also a pleasure to see kids catching crabs at the dock, they never looked happier. If I could I would go to BI every weekend.

My Favorite on Block Island, 2012-08-13
Captain: , Deep River, CT (250)

When we go to Block we only stay at the Boat Basin. In New Harbor there are three marinas, Champlin's, Payne's and Boat Basin. Boat Basin is the only one that provides slips for each boat (No Rafting) and floating docks. The others have some floating, but I have never been able to get on a floater. The showers do require tokens, but that is so the hundreds anchored out don't overrun them. The docks are floaters without fingers, but the staff are excellent in helping you in between pilings and always do a great job getting you correctly tied up.
Block Island is unique, and takes some getting use to, but it truly is a great destination.

Nice Facility, 2012-07-27
Captain: , Aventura, Florida (330)

We were here for 2 nights on transit of the Sound. The dock hands were very knowledgeable and helpful. They are fixed wooden docks. We were away from the bar on the end of the main pier but still had access to the music and festivities that were going on. The marina could use a shuttle service to town as it is a good distance away. The pool was nice but small. Overall a nice stay.

Expensive Shower, 2012-07-03

Captain: Dave Deem, Doylestown, Pa. 18902 (244)

We anchored out with friends,my wife and I took the launch into the launch's docking area walked to the showers, said we needed a token, they directed us back down the dock to the dock master. The dock master asked us if we were in the maraina we replied no we were anchored, they said no showers for you go check with the harbor master,we did and she directed us to the main harbor in town someone ended up giving us tokens, the cab ride to town 11 dollars each way, launch 6 dollars each way, 34 dollars later not including tip we had our shower. We would have gladly paid to take a shower at the marina near the launch landing, but they did not seem to realize they had missed out on that. The showers near Ballards were just showers no hooks, curtains in the mens area just the token machine to hang you stuff over. Not a good experience. We will not return to Block Island

Not ready for season yet, 2012-05-29
Captain: , Lottsburg VA (127)

Still "fixing up" for current season. Nice folks but not in hurry to help transits.

Best on the Island, 2011-07-14
Captain: , mamaroneck (140)

This marina is truly a find. The staff is friendly and helpful. The dock hands experienced in helping you dock in ever present winds. Each boat gets its own slip; no rafting. It is an easy mile walk to town and restaurants. You will meet an eclectic group of boaters, adding to the allure of this marina. The island is easy to navigate and fun to explore within a day. If you want steamers, go to Finn's. The beaches are sandy and the Town beach rents umbrellas and chairs if that is to your liking. The weather can change on a moments notice. So give yourself some leeway in making travel plans. We enjoyed the meals served at Dead Eye Dicks and the Oar is a wonderful place to watch the sunset and enjoy the food and atmosphere.

Expensive but convenient, 2011-07-03
Captain: , Beach haven NJ (510)

This marina is small and overpriced but is located next to the Oar (local watering hole). There are bathrooms and showers available with tokens at additional expense. There is nicely stocked ships store with bike rentals and a cab station that will take you to Old Harbor. After staying in great salt pond for a few days this provides a break from taking water taxis and allows for electric hookup and fill the water tanks.

BI Boat Basin overview, 2011-03-28
Captain: , W. Islip (1025)

The Block Island Boat Basin is the 2nd marina on the right (west) as you reach the southern end of the New Harbor channel. The marina has concrete floating piers and ice and fuel can be bought. It also has a small general store stock with groceries & marina supplies. The Oar Restaurant is also located at the Boat Basin & offers breakfast, lunch & dinners both indoors & outside. A must place to visit if only for a drink at the bar and at look at the interior decor. Closes from mid-September to Memorial Day.

Very good staff, THE OAR restaurant and bar is a great time.

Nice Place, 2010-08-29
Captain: , Mt. Sinai, NY (232)

We stayed there 4 days in August - arriving just before a Nor Easter. The dockboys were extremely helpful in docking, and in checking on the boats during the storm.

Great location, helpful staff, decent facilities. I would stay there again.

Mediocre for the price, 2010-08-26
Captain: , Robbinsvill, NJ (148)

Old facilities with high price per feet and additional charge for hook up. Shower and head facilities old and not very clean. Staff not customer service oriented. High cost and low volume for ice. In summary, I will anchor out next visit to Block Island.

Nice Place to Vist, 2010-06-15
Captain: , Hampton, VA (423)

Stayed there 8-11 Jun. Not crowed and still putting together the docks. $4.00 a foot plus $20 a night for electric. Very helpful staff. The marina now has installed showers that take tokens - free for those staying there. if on a mooring not buy tokens. Only marine I saw with floating docks. Car and bike rentals by small store at end of dock - commencted with Oars resteruant.

BI Boat Basin, 2009-07-22
Captain: , Old Saybrook, CT (1021)

The stern-in docking with no finger piers might seem a little intimidating, but the excellent staff will get you into the slip with no trouble. Much quieter than either of the other marinas, a decent convenience store, a good restaurant, bicycle and car rental, and closer to town than that "other" place.

The only marina on BI I will stay at, 2008-08-24
Captain: , taunton, ma (20)

The best dock hands I have experienced anywhere! 2 young men helped me into the slip, tied me up and made sure I had my power and water connected before they left. One of them even took some extra time to show me on my chart some of his favorite fishing spots! That is going the extra mile! There was an insane amount of boat traffic in the harbor, but the dock hands kept in communication with me to make sure there were no problems. Taxi service, a small general store and a nice restaurant are all right there.

No Rafting, 2007-08-19
Captain: , Greenport, NY (23)

It a welcome treat to dock your boat on BI and not have to have other boaters trapsing all over it or you over thiers. The staff is friendly and you can walk into town, bike or take a taxi and its a lot quieter than some other marinas

Block's Best, 2007-07-12
Captain: , Sag Harbor, NY (605)

The Personnel are extremely friendly and professional. Individual slips with floating docks is a welcome feature compared with BIs other marinas. The Oar Restaurant is one of the islands best drinking and dining spots.

Most Friendly Marina, 2007-05-07
Captain: , Block Island (1679)

The only marina on BI that doesn't force rafting. Every boat gets her own slip.
