Reviews for Black Dog Wharf
Great dock side service and location, 2016-09-19
Captain: , Sakonnet Brewers Marina (10)

Dockhands were very helpful, friendly and attentive. The bakery, tavern and shops on site are great and convenient. Limited slips and only hard dock (no floating docks), but generally a queit and relaxing place to stay.

Our attempt at a two-day stay at Martha's Vinyard was a disaster because the Black Dog marina lured us there with the promise of a 55' dock for our 45' mororyacht. When we arrived, the manager, Peter, did a bait-and-switch and tried to get me to back our 15' beam boat into a 17' wide slip, in a strong crosswind. I refused the slip, (which had no finger-dock either). In that narrow slip for egress, we would have had to somehow climb over our dingy and it's davit - which was impossible. We couldn't walk off our boat.

Peter then said we could dock at the 55' dock, which we had previously agreed to on in a phone conversation. However we could only stay that night, since Black Dog had sold it to a larger boat which was coming in the next day.

All this for $247.50/ night. We decided to leave the island. Black Dog was the only place we could get a reservation. Now I know why - it's the last resort marina. It's for boats much smaller than ours, and for people who are willing and able to climb verticle ladders to get on and off their boats.
There were no finger docks anywhere there that I remember seeing; and no floating docks.

The cheap-thinking management, then charged our card for the second night. I would also bet that they would have also sold the slip and still charged me for the second night. Black Dog's owner "Morgan" something-or-other, simply wants to lure any boaters who are unaquainted with the slips there. It was cheap-thinking toward the customer all the way. After threatening to dispute both night's charges they refunded the second one - after Dockwa intervened. Dockwa still represents the Black Dog marina though - kind of questionable thinking I think.

We have been criuising since May 1, 2016; staying at about a dozen marinas each month, from Florida to Maine. No other marina came close to the disaster Black Dog was for us - two days of wasted travel, and $247.50 for a miserably managed marina. All other marinas had decent facilities and much better owners. Those who are inexperienced with this marina should : Beware of the Black Dog's bite!

We lucked out by getting a slip for two days at the last minute. Very convenient location and clean bathrooms and showers. Thanks for a great stay. We will be back!

We are back for the second year. Great place with wonderful people. Plenty of help for docking and leaving. Nice place to stay in the Vineyard

Like other recent reviewers, I was very pleasantly surprised by my experience at BDW. If you are looking for an ultra modern experience, BDW may not be for you - it isn't perfect, meaning facilities are older and rustic, internet service does not work, etc. But if you want old-world charm, excellent and friendly service, an amazing location, and more, you will be in for a good stay. Not to mention the restaurant is still great, as are the complimentary muffins. We will be back.

Great service by a very friendly staff., 2016-07-31

Very good experience. I would highly recommend them.

we'll be back!, 2016-07-29
Captain: , Milford ct (10)

cute and quaint, yet not touristy. dock hands very helpful, friendly. Marina very pet friendly (maybe because we had a black dog on board). "harbor TV" very entertaining-marine railway on one side and mega yachts/ferries nearby, free muffins were a bonus and tavern has great eats! ferry effect was nothing and cute town with easy provisioning-will definitely return! waaay more interesting than Edgartown

You'll wish you stayed longer! , 2016-07-27

When we arrived at the Black Dog Wharf, we were greeted by two dock attendants who helped tie up and hook up the power and water lines. They shared some local knowledge with us and helped us make plans for the day. All of which was very much appreciated. The restrooms and laundry were very convenient and clean. We stayed four nights and would have stayed longer if time had allowed.

Never again! Low rent docks and service at Newport prices, 2015-08-20

The worst marina I've stayed at so far from Port Washing east. Fixed docks soaked in creosote. Dock hands that are disinterested summer breakers at best (with the exception of one girl who was helpful.) One dock hand didn't know what a halyard was. I had a 5 day reservation and the dock master had me wait for 6 hours out on the hook because the guy in my slip had left and they didn't know where he was. I finally came in at 3pm and tied up in an empty slip near it where I could have been all day. I talked to the guy when he came back and he was't told he had to move as he was staying another day. I think the dock master was too lazy to change his schedule book. Two power boats from Duck Dynasty were tied up with about 8 screaming kids and their VW size float toys jumping off the dock and paddling between the boats. Very dangerous. Dock master did nothing about it. The same helpful girl finally explained to them that they couldn't throw their kids (all under 8) off the dock. The parents were drunk and thought it was funny. I left a day early gladly giving up my slip fee just to get out of there. Never again.

Stay if Vineyard is your port of call!, 2015-07-14

Small marina with a killer location for Vineyard Haven. Staff is friendly and helpful. You will rock 'n roll with winds blowing from the NE. Ferry wakes are VERY minimal. We have been to Edgartown and OB, so we thought that this would be a change of pace. Staying at the marina does not get you special treatment at the Black Dog Tavern. Will return in the future if Vineyard Haven is a destination.

quaint and wonderful, 2014-08-27

stayed 07/14 and just loved the vibe! docks nice a little rolly but overall nice-watch the ferrys turn around and eat at the Black Dog you will love this place too--rented some bikes right in town and cruised the island...

We spent one and have anther long weekend scheduled. This is our third year staying here. The small marina is very acomdating - good showers/laundry - free coffee in the dock house and coupons for the back dog bakery. Staff is small but very pleasant. Easy access for provisioning and to catch the MV bus system which is a cost effective way to get around the whole island. Harbor master pump out is very prompt and works a long day.

And best breakfast at the black dock tavern at the end of the dock.

Food and Such, 2013-08-29
Captain: , Cotuit, MA (94)

VH was a dry town for years, now u can buy beer and wine but only in restaurants and only if u eat. The Black Dog gives you rolls free so you can order booze! Food there is good but expensive; e.g., $22 for fish and chips. Closes at 3:00 weekdays, too. Use Yelp but you'll find little: cash only Mexican takeout, a couple pizza places, Viet Namese, Moxie Cafe and Mansion House--nice but costly. Best deal is to walk up Main Street (a hill) a couple blocks to "The Market." Great sandwiches ($6-$8 and huge), soup, salads, coffee-no booze. Careful, as they change a $20 bill like it's a $10 hoping u won't notice! There is a super market across from the ferries. BTW see my Maciel's Marina (in the lagoon at the end) review for much cheaper dockage then MV harbor if u have a smaller power boat, say 28 ft or under.

The Black Dog is the place to stop in Vineyard Haven. A good stop for sailboats versus the mega yachts next door with their generators and parties running all night. Great food and access to Vineyard Haven. More dock space than Edgartown.

Great location, friendly staff, 2012-12-06
Captain: , Wickford, RI (386)

Close to everything in town and near the ferry dock, thr frienlf staff is somrtimes quite creative in squeezing boats in and tying them up. The "famous" Black Dog restaurant is at the foot of the dock and the food is actually good!

Great stop, but avoid if the wind is easterly or from the northeast.

Friendly, good location, BUT it is in Vineyard Heaven, 2010-08-02
Captain: , Miami, fl (3544)

i'm not sure i get the hype about MV and Vineyard Heaven in particular. too much traffic, too much noise and frankly the harbor isn't that pretty.

that said, the marina is nice and the staff very friendly and helpful. There is a Stop n Shop across the street (convenient to re provision). Free muffins in the morning at their bakery.

So if you really want to stop in VH, this is the place to be otherwise, just go straight to Nantucket and Edgartown.

Great location with access to everything you need., 2010-05-19
Captain: , MA and Southwest FL (538)

Overall it is an excellent location if you want to get away from the Oak Bluffs crowd. Beach, stores, provisions, restaurants all right there. Dock hands were excellent at assisting us with anything we needed.

The only complaint, which I must voice, since their web site boasts about it and they have a framed picture on the wall, is in regard to their showers and restrooms. They won a 2007 award. "Pristine private showers and washrooms %u2013 Voted %u201CBest Heads/Showers%u201D by Captain%u2019s Guide Magazine". Well they may be "cute" and "quaint" but they are outdated and dirty. The dust and grime looks like it's been there for 10 years. Will return though.
