Our experience with BBY was not a good one. We purchased our sailboat through them while we were still out west. Before we could move onto the boat, they contacted us and said the entire deck was wet and needed to be replaced. They wanted to get started on it immediately. They also said they would be able to replace the core from underneath instead of tearing into the deck. This did not sound right to us so we said no, wait until we get there. When we arrived, we discovered they had taken the moisture readings from the inside of the boat and then wrote said readings on the headliner, with a black Sharpie. First of all, there is at least a 2 inch space between the deck and the headliner (with wiring running through it) so getting an accurate reading is impossible. Second, who writes all over someones headliner with a Sharpie! After we arrived, we did our own readings with our own moisture meter and surprise!, not nearly as catastrophic as we were led to believe. Strangely enough, after we arrived, no one from BBY came and spoke to us about repairing the wet deck. We literally spent hours scrubbing the black Sharpie off our white headliner with Barkeepers Friend and had to use MEK to get the "ghost" of the rest of it off. When our boat was surveyed at BBY, the surveyor took pictures when he had the boat hauled out. When we went to leave Wilmington, we had prop problems. We hauled the boat out and the 15" propeller that was in all the surveyor photos had been replaced by a 12 inch propeller, that had at one time been a 16 inch that was ground down to a 12 inch. Luckily for us, the person we bought the boat from included a spare 15 inch propeller so AFTER we left BBY, we had it replaced. The boat hung overnight on the travel lift when it was pulled. It was in a secured boatyard. And yet, the propeller was stolen and replaced with one that had been machined down to a smaller size. While we are not making any accusations, we will say that something like that should not happen in a secured boatyard. While staying at Cape Fear Marina, we had contact with a lot of people who had work done by BBY and were not at all happy. We don't know why they haven't placed reviews here but they should. We cannot recommend this place to anyone.

I am sorry you did not have a good experience at Bennett Brothers Yachts with your 1972 Morgan 41. Wet decks are typical on a 45 year old boats but I am glad you did not find it to be the case with Sunstrider. I spoke to Joe Rose who has been our Paint & Fiberglass supervisor for nearly 20 years regarding your overhead. He said the protocol BBY uses for moisture readings is to put the numbers on easily removable sticky paper, never directly on a boat surface. I had not heard that your prop was stolen before. As you know having lived aboard Sunstrider at the Cape Fear Marina, there is a great community that really watches out for one another.

Although you only hauled your boat with Bennett Brothers Yachts, I would certainly welcome you to come try us for some work on Sunstrider and give us the opportunity to shine! Chris was very helpful getting us docked in a blowing wind and fast current. Laundry facilities were excellent, baths clean. Can get pump out at ur slip. Uber was easy to grocery store. Short dingy ride to Front St for restaurants and bars. Long walk to marina. All staff very courteous. Noisy if docked too close to bridge. Took advantage of free dockage offer and ended up staying an extra day.

Nice working marina. Looks like you could get about anything fixed or repaired here. Unfortunatly our dock was right under a very busy bridge and well we were fine inside the boat it was nice to get underway to get back to a quite environment. The Wifi was iffy, but we were at the furthest dock from the buidings, which might have been the issue. Good power and weak water pressure. Thanks for having us.

We were so delighted to find this marina to be more than others had stated. The restrooms are clean and tidy, the laundry facilities are top notch, the wifi worked with no problems noted, and the staff is amazing. Our boat was pumped out, and he even worked with us to flush our tanks. We ordered some parts, and Rolf was helpful and accommodating. We asked if we could have some mail delivered, and there were no issues with that. The only drawback is that the marina is not close enough or conveniently located to walk into town. However, if you dinghy to the free town docks, call them, and they will allow you to tie up out of the way. We enjoyed our free week here at BBY/CFM and will return! Thank you all for making our Thanksgiving weekend great!

(This is a review of Cape Fear Marina -- a separate entitiy from Bennett Bros Yachts.)
A few months ago I was forced to pretty well pan this marina. It has turned a corner, and is making a come back.
The restrooms have finally been renovated. Wifi is back up and running reasonably well (though I'm told that there are still issues on the south dock). With a change of personnel the docks are being maintained (it will take a while to catch up, but the effort is being made), the grounds and the dockhouse are being maintained. The dockmaster is doing pumpouts again, rather than leaving it to individual boaters to take care of their own waste. The security gate is operational again (this was a BBY issue, but it affected Cape Fear Marina).
There are still a couple of issues that need to be addressed (the laundry facilities and additional landscaping for security reasons, as well as aesthetics)
This is, once again, a comfortable marina to pull in to. .

We left our boat for bottom paint, running gear paint, new dripless shaft seals, transmmission oil change, new aft sunshade fabrication, varnishing brightwork and buffing/waxing (and some other misc items) while we took a break from the Loop late June to Early Aug. BBY did agreat job, costs were within reason of original estimates (there is always something extra that needs attention on a boat) and done in a timely fashion. We had arranged for them to check AC, strainers etc. One morning we received an email stating that the AC pump quit running, they had located and installed my on board spare and would I like them to order a new spare? They also gave us rides to and from the airport which is only 5 minutes away. They also reviewed all work done to explain what was done/found, etc as work progressed. Boat was clean and securely tied in the slip when we returned. I would not rate their costs as inexpensive, but the work was done in a quality manner. I guess anything on a boat is expensive though.....

Amenities are disappearing but fees have remained unchanged. WiFi disappeared two months ago, security gate was distroyed be a delivery truck a month ago and is yet to be replaced. The men's room & shower is closed for repairs, it's like living in a boarding house with 30-50 strangers that only has one restroom.
If it were not for business in the area I'd be long gone.

Have stopped here twice now. We thought we had been well service the first time but later learned parts they installed were the worst available after the parts failed in about 4 months. We stopped again in October at which time they streached our stay out 1 week & attempted to streach it at least another 2 weeks. They spent several days diagnosing an engine oil leak problem, said it would take 4 - 5 days to get the parts then did not order the parts at the end of the week. On both visits they have streache our stay out & have tried to install parts of poor quality in the first place & more than needed on the second visit. We had told them we wanted to store our boat here upon our first visit but on this visit they informed us they doubted they would have room for us even though we palnned to have extensive hull & deck work done. We will not be back!

Docks are getting old, loose boards on walkways. Fast current, dirty water, had to clean strainers every other day. Nice laundry area, dead mosquito wallpaper not attractive, toilets not cleaned as they should be on men's side of showers. Nice charcoal grill available with free charcoal and starter fluids, free bag of ice daily. Long ways from downtown if no car, no provisioning close by....kind of out of the way. Flies get ravenous at sundown. No fuel available.

Unfortunately due to engine complications and strong currents my boat drifted into an opening bridge and fortunately the damage was minimal (spreader was broken, shroud damaged, jib ripped). We stopped at this marina because it was the only one around but I know now thats that proably because no other marina can compete with Bennett Brothers. They fixed our boat in 4 days, the dockmaster found us a welder who repaired our spreader for extremely cheap (and the work was amazing). All the marina staff are extremely skilled and friendly. Some of them drove me and my buddy into town for groceries. Weather you hit a bridge or not I would highly recommend this marina for anyone traveling the ICW. Without them I would have never been able to make it to the Bahamas.

They did not like the way the finish looked when completed and told me they were going to sand it down again and start over. The final job looked great. We spent a week plus a couple weather days at Bennett Brothers and were amazed at the many things there were to do in Wilmington! Fabulous restaurants, entertainment, a wide selection of grocery options (Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter), we even went to a Farmer's Market. We got a great deal on a Hertz rental through our Gold membership - they even picked us up - so we could really check things out. There is also a special deal through the marina for Enterprise discounts.

It is primarily a boat yard but the other facilities we found to be very nice. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. We snooped around the yard and were impressed with what we saw. This would be the perfect place to be "stuck" for maintenance or repairs as there is so much to keep you occupied while your boat is being worked on. We got a few estimates on some future projects and hope to do just that!

Stayed at CFM while passing through. I stayed for three days and my husband a few days longer. I think the ladies room should be cleaned more. Not sure if they clean them every day but while I was there, there was some hair left behind that remained for the 3 days I was there. It looked like the garbage was emptied but not to much else was done. Same way with the laundry room. Not cleaned while I was there. They also seem to have started a log collection. They tie logs to the dock and they seem to keep them for a while. The times I went near the bathrooms/laundry/deck area the manager seemed to always be sitting there smoking. His time would have been better spent cleaning. Would not stay again and would not recommend.

Arrived 7/2/2014 to ride out Hurricane Arthur. BBY is a hurricane rated marina. Michael, the dock manager met us and was very friendly and professional, even predicted wind pattern for storm and put us in a slip so as our bow would face the brunt of the gale winds. Nothing luxurious, a working yard/marina, but overall a pleasant stay, even enjoyed viewing downtown Wilmington's July Fourth firework show from the docks. Good laundry and shower facility, was a long walk to the marina facilities, though. No car available, and locals advised not to walk or ride bikes to the city, so we stayed put and didn't venture out.

When I heard that the Cape Fear Marina was offering a week's free storage, I decided to take them up on it and use the chance to drive home for a week.(We are doing the Great Loop and had been traveling for two months) We were actually gone for nine days and expected to pay for the extra days, but were not charged because we had a little work done on our return. The work was done professionally and quickly on very short notice, and at a minimal cost. Al Noble, the service manager was very helpful, as were his technicians Eddie and Chris.

Usually if something seems too good to be true, it is. Not in this case.

We had a great stop here. The folks here were super accommodating and friendly. I needed to complete some work on my engine and Eddie the mechanic even came by to check on it and make sure I didn't have any questions.

The facilities aren't a spa, but they are clean and more than adequate. The docks are in good shape. The wifi worked fine while I was there, but they were even starting the process to upgrade it and make it better. The setting is beautiful.

For on shore activities, a car is a necessity. Enterprise is nearby and will pick you up and drop you off.

It's a hike up the river, it in our mind it is really worth it.

Full Disclosure: I frequently keep my boat here and I really like the place so I may be somewhat biased.

BBY is a bit out of the way for people on the ICW but worth the visit if you need ANY work done. There is a draw bridge (Isalbel Holmes Bridge) that has a funky opening shedule (10:00, 14:00 and any time before 0600 or after 18:00 hours). The bridge tender is a sypathetic guy but his hands are tied in this matter. You can usually tie up temporarily on a face dock at the small marina (Sawmill Creek marina- no phone available at this time) on the east side of the river right down stream from the bridge to wait for an opening.

Cape Fear Marina's mechanical staff is first class as is their paint and FG operation. They have a large crane on call if needed to pull masts. Their rigger is really good! They can haul really large vessels as well (70 tons, 90 feet and 10' draft).

I started out contracting jobs to individual craftsmen when I began restoring Willet. BBY's GM talked me into coming to BBY (close to where my boat was originally built) in 2011 and I found better work at overall lower net costs per project. I stopped again this year on the way back from Maine to have them do a couple more projects and then moved my brother's boat here from Washington DC for work.

Hey, you can always find something to kvetch about anywhere but these guys are the best I've found south of New England.

Another nice reason to visit is the Wilmington Waterfront that really hops in the summer as well as many great (not terribly expensive) restaurants such as the Indochine on Market Street or the Dock Street Oyster Bar. There are several High end restaurants as well as a myriad of Bars and Bistros along the waterfront of the old town. Bennett Brothers (Cape Fear Marina is about a $4.00 cab ride (about 5 minutes) from Wilmington Internationan Airport.

We kept our boat here for the winter while we went home for the holidays. After returning we had the boat hauled for a cleaning and some repairs on a few thru hulls. They did a superb job and was comparably priced to our home port service centers.

They are fairly close to downtown as the crow flies but it is not an easy area to get around by foot.

Very, very close to the airport which we found handy for our purposes.

I asked Bennett Brothers, based on an enthusiastic recommendation from a very experienced boater on Yacht Forums, to do some complicated and unusual repair work on my 30+ year old Hatteras 56 motoryacht. This required many, many man-hours of thoughtful, careful work. Ultimately, more than 15 repairs were made, and every one of them was done right.
Both Al Noble, who heads the Service Department, and Dale Jones, who is exceptionally knowledgeable about old Hats, were a pleasure to deal with, repeatedly demonstrated their broad and deep experience with complicated and sometimes outdated electrical and plumbing systems, could think outside the box when they had to, and always aimed to please.
I heartily recommend Bennett Brothers to anyone who can get his boat to Wilmington. It will be well worth the trip.

Questionable practices, 2014-01-21

The marine facilities are great and staff friendly but the boatyard seems to have questionable practices. We were towed there on instruction from Progressive insurance with a bent rudder and crack in engine compartment as well as cracks midship in the cabin and on one of the stantions. The boatyard hauled out the boat and started with repairs even before the insurance adjuster got there. Then they started other repairs when they got an estimate from the insurance without any authorization. When we questioned it and requested a detailed estimate on what they planned to do, they were reluctant to give it and it turned out that they were planning to slap some 5200 on the crack in engine compartment with a leak. They advised the adjuster that the damage inside the cabin was cosmetic while the head door does not want to close and shifted. They also charged for 2 hours consultation and a bolt that snapped on the rudder mounting was not fixed even though the mechanic noticed it and undertook to replace it. The rudder was removed twice and it was still not fixed. Judge for yourself.

We recently had our boat hauled at Bennett Brothers to have a prop shaft recoupled. BB has a full service facility with a 70 ton travel lift and will let you do you own work on your boat. We also had a raw water sea cock replaced while hauled. The BB people were knowledgeable and friendly. Al Noble, the service manager, is a good guy and was easy to deal with. Once back in the water, we stayed a few days longer to get a new water pump installed. The bath house facilities are not new, but were clean and certainly very adequate. Plus you get a free bag of ice every day. Fuel is available by truck at a great price, but you do have to pay the hourly rate for a BB employee to pump it.
Whether docking or hauling out, it's best to approach at slack time due to the river current which can be a little tricky. Call ahead for information on when the slack tides occur.
There is nothing within walking distance of BB, but downtown Wilmington is only a couple of miles away by car. Lots to do and see in Wilmington and some great restuarants.

Overall, I would recommend Bennett Brothers for repairs or a stop over when cruising.

Stopped on the way north and left boat for about 10 days, had some work done and was pleasntly surprised at the level of service provided by Patrcia Bennet along with manager Steve (even drove us to airport). All the staff was competent and accomadating, including having someone meet us when we came in on Memorial Day when yard was closed. The only criticism is the taxi service was problematic; certainl not the marina's fault.
i would have no qualms about leaving my boat there again. It's worth the short trip off the beaten path.

We had picked up a coupon for a week's free dockage at the AGLCA rendezvous and decided to take advantage of it. While there we had them work on leaky hatches and cracks in the forward lockers. We were on a pretty tight time schedule, but they got the work done and we were very pleased.

The floating docks are great, the facilities adequate. I would give them 5 stars if they had a courtesy car. Actually, we had our car with us this time so didn't need transportation. But if I had really been a transient without a car the location is not great. However, you can dinghy about a mile and be in the heart of downtown. But current is very strong at times, so be careful in the dinghy!

Overall, a fine facility especially if you need work done.

We took advantage of a weeks free dockage that was handed out at Trawlerfest-Baltimore and were not disappointed. We wethered Hurricane Sandy here and felt quite safe. We took the opportunity to have some extensive repair work done and I have to say that the repairs and service people were first class. Facilities were always neat and clean. Pumpout at every slip. The only downside is that you really need transportation for groceries, supplies and to visit Wilmington. Enterprise will come and pick you up and have special rates - we paid $45 for a full size car. I would recommend this marina and their service department to anyone.

We learned about this marina at their booth at the Annapolis Power Boat Show (2012). As we were traveling south on the AICW we decided to visit and as luck would have it, hurricane Sandy was approaching. We were greeted at the dock and stayed for the duration of the bad weather. We were secure and safe. The folks here are competent, met all our needs and made some repairs for us as well. Definitely recommend a visit for a good place to stay out of a storm, for repairs, and for simply visiting Wilmington.

Our boat was trucked from Texas and delivered to BBY. Steve, Bryan, Ollie and the yard crew did an outstanding job of recommissioning the boat quickly and their work is first class. Our little trawler got the same care and attention as the multi-million dollars yachts. Their location is convenient to the airport, downtown Wilmington and "hotel row" on Market Street.

Had the boat overlanded to here from Texas. Steve Wallace and staff were superb in handling all the issues of re-commissioning. Upon initial departure struck a log in the river; had to be pulled and prop repaired. Everyone went out of the way to be supportive.

Stopped here to have some minor repairs done and visit Wilmington at the same time. The Service Manager Bryan handles the service department and the marina. This is a full-service boat yard capable of all levels of service and repair. The facility is in first class condition.

The only drawbacks are the location which is not downtown but not far away either. Yellow Cab will get you there or Enterprise is less than three miles away. The other consideration is the current which can run at 2+ knots and making docking tricky.

I would not hesitate to return here if I was seeking a full-service yard on this part of the ICW.
