Reviews for Bayou Grande Sailing Marina, MWR
Bayou Grande, NAS Pensacola, 2016-06-05
Captain: , Pensacola, FL (15)

First class crew running this little marina! If you have access to military/DoD facilities and are either stationed here or are passing though, then you need to stop by here.

While there is no fuel and the marina store is small, the slips are very nice (floating docks) with either 30 or 50 amp service, and Wi-fi (both included in transient and monthly fees). Our little boat is moored on C dock and we nose in so the morning brings us those gorgeous sunrises unobstructed by anything but a few pines.

5 stars if they served fuel!

Been a patron since the 90's, kept our boats here since 2006. Awesome staff and VERY talkative and helpful dockmaster. Serves active & retired military and civil service. Clean, decent rates. follow the chanel markers if you draw more than 4'.

Could not sponsor non-DoD , 2016-01-09
Captain: , Yorktown, VA (300)

I called to ask to sponsor a fellow looper and was told that I could. Upon arrival, the day before my guest was coming in, I spoke with a different person working the desk and was informed it was no longer possible to sponsor non-DoD boats. According to this lady, who claimed to be the assistant MWR marina manager, the person I originally spoke to was misinformed. She said for liability reasons, non-DoD transients can no longer use the marina.

We found out from other boaters that a non-DoD boat had been sponsored here the previous week. So, it kind of depends on who you have manning the desk. I just would not count on it working out.

Other than that, it was a good place to leave the boat while we went home. It was cheaper to pay for a whole month, than use their daily or weekly rate. For our 42 foot trawler, we paid about $260 for 30 days.

Overall, nice people, well maintained facility, just a little remote if you are vehicle "challenged." Enterprise has a location on base, however, to solve that problem.

Good stop with basic services. Run by the MWR it has decent docks and facilities: free pump out, laundry. There is a few places to eat on base, the nearest is about a 20 min walk, others are about 30-45 minutes depending in how fast you walk. Bikes help a lot. No Hard Licquor this side, only beer.

Coming into the marina is tricky so watch those channel markers. Protected and water and electricity on docks. Good aluminum docks. Price is right for DoD, and they can sponsor guest boats at 1$ per ft.

The big negative is the isolation (reason for 4 vrs 5 star) need a car to get anywhere, however staff have been very helpful with short rides about base.

Don't miss the National Cemetary and Navy Air Museum both free and worth the visit.

Top Notch -- We'll Return, 2015-05-11
Captain: , Prattville, AL (280)

This is an excellent marina with a fabulous staff. Even before our arrival, we received patient and courteous assistance from at least two staff members.

The floating docks are solid and well kept. The electrical currents were consistent and reliable. The bathrooms were always clean. The laundry facilities are clean and FREE!

Be mindful of the channel as you arrive and depart. As a newer boater, I was a bit nervous with our 5-foot-plus draft, but I know of other boats that run deeper than ours that came and went without any issues. Request local knowledge from the marina staff before you transit the channel between the bay and the bayou.

Heads Up! [Pun intended] While the pump out is free and available pretty much anytime, you must understand that the unit is manual and you will do all the work. The staff will deliver the pump out to an area near the office, but they will not bring it to your boat or retrieve it once you%u2019ve completed your, uh, duty. It is your responsibility to wheel the heavy unit back up the steep ramp to the office, so you%u2019ll want to enlist a friend with a strong back to help.

When it%u2019s all said and done, the marina manager, Mike, and his crew do wonderful things and always deliver with a smile.

We will be back.

Great Marina and Staff, 2015-04-25
Captain: , Kemah, TX (306)

We have stayed here before and will return again. This marina is only available to active or retired military.

The staff is super friendly and helpful. The marina has all amenities except fuel. There is shopping at the base exchange but it is a good walk away. Give the Oaks restaurant at the golf course a try for a breakfast or lunch.

If you layover on a Tuesday you may get to see the Blue Angels perform. They fly directly over the marina. We were lucky enough to get a free air show on our last visit.

Enterprise rental car has an office on base.

If you are entering the marina for the first time, I recommend you call the marina and ask them to send you a diagram of the shoaling on the entrance channel between Green 2 and Green 5. We have a 5.5 ft. draft and entered and exited at mid tide and had at times only a foot beneath the keel.

Glad to be military!, 2014-12-24
Captain: , Kemah, TX (612)

We have been here twice and will return again! Friendly, helpful marina staff. Restrooms were cold and seemed unheated, and shower was not very warm. Changed oil and marina was able to dispose of the used oil with no problem. Enterprise Car Rental was available on base and they came to pick us up. Well protected environment (security and weather) for the boat and us. Great rates!

Great People Nice Base, 2014-11-13
Captain: , Pensacola, FL (675)

This Marina has very freindly folks. You also are within walking range to a great golf course, Military PX, and all the regular base facilities. A long walk to PX and all though. Great place to stop if you are military or DOD affiliated. Head and showers kept very clean. Laundry facility is nice. One of the nicest military Marinas I have visited. Well protected from wind and current. I just became a permanent slip holder here. Be careful to follow markers entering. Plenty of water but a couple of sharp turns from the entrance channel to the Marina.

nice area/quiet, 2014-11-08
Captain: , Navarre Fl (24)

As a heads up Call and find out if the office will be open due to events. Stopped in over Blue Angel Homecoming weekend was closed all weekend due to manning the event. WHAT AN AWESOME VIEW OF THE JETS! limited access when this is the case otherwise closed Tuesday and Wednesday normally. portable pump out available from office attendant and restrooms closed 6pm-8am. closest access to needed items is 1.5 mile walk to NEX. Transient dock has 30amp power and water. Little rough at some high traffic times as boats pass In the channel.

Very nice MWR/DoD facility, 2014-02-21
Captain: , Annapolis (795)

This is a Morale/Welfare/Recreation facility for the DoD. Mike Helms manages this marina and is an excellent resource. Great staff with a 24-hr on-site hosting family. Paid staff on site from 0800-1600 Thurs-Mon. We arrived on a Wednesday, tied up on the transient dock (next to the huge boat ramp) and signed in the following day when the staff arrived. Tricky entrance - we saw 6' between tides. Plenty of water at the marina. No WiFi, and no fuel, but the bathhouse is decent and laundry facility is free. It is a long walk to anything, but there are facilities on base. Price is $0.50 / foot, including electricity. Floating docks in good condition.

Friendly, Clean & Amenities, 2013-11-03

Friendly & knowledgeable staff with great amenities. Always meet the best sailors..

A nice visit, 2013-06-12
Captain: , Muskegon, MI (980)

We came in on a Tuesday, technically they are closed, so there was no staff to assist us. It is quite, clean, and sheltered. The entrance is a bit tricky, but follow the markers and there is enough water to enter.

Captain: , Northport MI (405)
