Reviews for Atlantic Yacht Basin
great service, 2017-09-13
Captain: , Panama City, FL (645)

Thanks AYB for great and friendly service on our haul out. So nice to see happy folks doing good work. Thanks also to Dennis for the reminder to stop at Coinjock!

great weather protection , 2017-09-03
Captain: , Beaufort, SC (500)

We fueled up and docked for 2 nights during a recent blow. Very well protected from wind.
Knocked a star off for having a rusty washing machine that ruined one of my wife's shirts and the water was well water.
All in all. I will definitely continue to stop here for fuel and transient dockage.

Thank goodness for 50 amp!, 2017-07-26
Captain: , Jacksonville, FL (240)

We'd planned to anchor but the temps were sweltering. We stopped at AYB for fuel and thankfully they had room for us for the night. While there we took advantage of their laundry facilities so departed cool, clean, dried, and folded. A great stop and in walking distance of retail and restaurants.

Very happy with the yard work..., 2017-07-17
Captain: , Newport Beach, CA (420)

We stopped at AYB in late-August planning a month long stay while my wife returned for to CA for biz. During that time, I had the boat hauled and many long overdue items completed, including changing the seals on my Naiad fins. Docks are a little long-in-the-tooth, but the service and dockage/labor rates far make up for not being state-of-the-art. I would have reviewed AYB two years ago, but I just realized that I hadn't written a review for them. In fact, I'm headed back to AYB from Baltimore for a month long layup for fiberglass work.

not so great, 2017-07-02
Captain: , st. pete (40)

stopped here on holiday weekend and wanted to change the oil and filters on the boat. Although the facility is a boatyard, the dockmaster on weekend duty could not be of less help. When I asked about disposal of used oil he told me that the facility was locked until Wed., that they charged to get rid of used oil and that he didn't know how much it costs, didnt have a key and basicly could not be inconvenienced to find out where I could dispose of the oil. I obviously solved the issue, but with no assistance from the yard. I asked about getting in line after the weekend for some mechanical work, but unsurpringly, the service advisor never got back to me even though he assured me he would. Consequently, we moved on.
The dock is not a bad but the facilities are limited and the water so hard you do not want to put it in your water tank. Overall not a bad place to tie up for a night, just don't expect much more than that.

Management response:
Dear Sir-
We'll review with the dockmasters the proper way and process to assist boaters with the disposal of oil when the boatyard is closed, especially during a long holiday week-end. We do not want your or anyone else's experience at our facility to be burdensome at all.

Please accept our sincere apology for the inconvenience.

Strong and Fast NEW WiFi, Great Fuel price., 2017-06-16
Captain: , Wickford, RI (456)

We stopped here again on our way North again. The dock hands are excellent here. Best fuel price in the area. Nice resturants and stores for provisions within walk distance. We fueled up, and re-provisioned for the next leg of the trip North.

We stopped here for one evening, but stayed a few days, due to the strong WiFi, I was able to get a few days of work in. Provisioning is a easy walk down the driveway to a large shopping center. There's a on-site Marine store. Easy docking, the best fuel price we found. Transient price for docking is $1 a foot. 30/50amp service and water. Friendly and helpfull staff.
We'll be back in the Spring.

Stopped here on the way North, had the same experience as we had in the Fall. Best diesel fuel price we encountered on out way north. We filled up. Again we ended up staying a few days, due to weather, strong WiFi and other friends we met there.
We'll be back in the Fall.

Stopped here again in the Fall. This time we stayed for 10 days.
Not much has changed, Strong WiFi, friendly staff, short walk to get provisions, great fuel price. and great service, and marina store.

See you in the Spring

Great Boat Yard, 2017-06-16
Captain: , Long Island Sound (50)

Stored our 40' sailboat here for a month while coming up the ICW. The marina is in a convenient location off the ICW, close to a major airport and plenty of marine supplies in the area. Good rates and from what we heard from other boaters is a great place to have work done. Took off one star because the bathrooms and showers need some attention.

Excellent Boatyard, 2017-06-11
Captain: , Georgetown, MD (372)

The staff is very accomodating and there is a dockmaster on duty 24/7. The facilities are dated but remember this is a working boatyard, not a marina. It is a short walk into town and there is a very nice shopping center with an outstanding grocery store. Good restaurants too. If you want glitz and glamour don't stop here. If you want convenience, good people, or perhaps some repairs this is the place.

Great Marina & Boatyard, 2017-06-11
Captain: , Venice, FL (170)

Jim & Karen on the Karen M.
This is one of the East Coast's premier boatyards/marinas. All that said, we want to say thanks to Ed, the dockmaster who treated us like royalty, late on a Sunday, when we needed a slip and to fuel and pump out, after a rough day on the Chesapeake. Great professional and really nice person...Ed was great. THANKS!

Facilities Need Some Attention, 2017-06-01
Captain: , Beaufort, SC (120)

We stopped for one night. Side tied at the face dock just off the waterway. Staff attentive and courteous.
The marina has 3 phase wiring which results in low voltage on our boat which has 50 amp 120/240 requirement. We were only getting 109/109 volts.
I asked the manager if he had received comments about this deficiency. He said no but later acknowledged that the facility is old. And later mentioned that all of the "power boosters" were in use.
A little irritating to experience this at a marina known for excellent repair services and technical expertise. One would think they could get the power right. And the $15 power charge... for 109 volts...

Restroomshower facilities old, need refurbishing. Not real clean. mildew, rust, stains....
WiFI was good.

Probably a great stop for repairs and cheap fuel. But as the manager said " this place is old". Yes it is, and while relatively inexpensive at $1.25 a foot plus the $15 power charge, there are better marinas nearby. And the free dock right across the waterway looked very inviting.

Sheltered and Secure, 2017-05-24
Captain: , Mooloolaba (692)

We stayed here for nearly 3 weeks. As we expected bad weather we went into the basin, not on the face dock, and we were found a spot, with power, in the rear sheds. This was very protected and secure storage. Some of the walkways can become a little under water if the wind blows consistently with a southerly or easterly content but it was manageable. We had some work done as we had a broken window. Very professional standard of work and prices reasonable. My only comment, agree all aspects of price in advance, freight extras seem to be a problem here to the extent that the freight charge borders on the totaly unbelievable. Otherwise very satisfied.
We ignored Vinos, Italian restaurant accross the road in easy walking distance, until near the time we left. Very sorry we did, we ate here for two nights in a row with the seafood pasta and dishes some of the best we have ever had. Ignore at your own cost!

Go the extra mile, 2017-05-22
Captain: , Charleston, SC (250)

After leaving our home port of Charleston, we experienced many problems with our 28 year old generator. A friend suggested we contact AYB about getting to their yard and replace genset. After a call to dockmaster on a Saturday, he called me back with name and phone number of the yard manager. We discussed the logistics of this and I told him I would call him on Monday with our decision to either replace or return back to Charleston. Monday I told him we would be there the next day. He called me back a few hours later with available gensets. We decided, he ordered, and it was delivered on Wednesday. We departed for the continuation of our cruise eight days later. We were able to stay on our boat on the face dock and the saloon was returned to livable conditions daily. The best craftsmen and the nicest employees I have ever experienced at a yard. Highly recommend!!!!

Going the extra step, 2017-04-28
Captain: , Galesville, MD (481)

Dockmaster offered us a slip during the busy north bound migration. It was an easy tie up and a welcome restful night sleep. The slip was in the back of the yard, but was perfect for us. Fuel was reasonable and service was excellent.

Great service, 2017-04-03
Captain: , Amherst (360)

My 48 year old exhaust system required a custom repair and this is a great place to get that kind of service and find some real craftmanship. Plus they were able to help me the day I went in and was underway again in the afternoon.

Our First ICW Stop, 2016-12-11
Captain: , Miami Beach, FL (210)

Headed South to Florida this was our first stop ever on the ICW. Evening dockmaster was amazing, efficient, and really hustled. Even offered to take us a short drive away for dinner. Was able to get more propane from a nearby gas station and the marine store had a couple of items we needed. Has one head and one shower for the men.

Great stop, 2016-10-31
Captain: , Cape Canaveral (1191)

We had to unexpectedly leave our 49' trawler in Norfolk, chose AYB, and were not disappointed. Left it on the face dock for four days and docmasters Damien and Rick made sure it was A OK. One of the best diesel prices around. We always stop here for something and will continue to do so.

Update: Oct 31, 2016
We pulled in at 7:30 AM with two electronics issues, GPS and sat TV. AYB called in Ayers Marine Electronics and in two hours both issues solved. We were out of there quickly at reasonable price.

Hunkered down for TS Matthew here, 2016-10-28
Captain: , Charleston SC (743)

We've stayed here many times going North and South. Although they finally raised their rates to $1.25 a foot it is still a bargain. Best fuels prices on the waterway. We tied up to the face dock for a week traveling ashore. When we returned, TS Matthew was on the way. The docks were underwater for a while but the pilings were more than adequate in height to keep us safe. Very protected from both wind a waves. We would return here if another storm threatened. Past visits showcased the friendly, helpful staff. I would give them 5 stars except for the showers/head...desperately needs upgrading.

convenient and inexpensive, 2016-08-19
Captain: , worton Creek (100)

Stopped here on the way north to get fuel. Best prices for fuel and an impressive work yard. A short walk to shopping or junk food ( we got Chinese). Tie up at the face dock overnite and had no wakes at all. Highly recomend it for an overnite.

Yard work: Honest, Customer-oriented Folks, 2016-08-04
Captain: , Key West, FL (758)

Update from 2012 entry below:

We have continued to get our Selene 55 and our new Marlow 70 serviced on each trip through VA on our annual migration north from and south to Key West. These guys are clearly among the best yards on the East Coast based on our many visits. Whether upgrading electrical and electronics or doing anything cosmetic, they do great work at good prices and always stand behind their work.

2012: I was passing through and planning to stay overnight only, when a problem came up: As a consequence of bad wiring of a new 50A receptacle by a contractor, we plugged into a new shore power connection that had "reverse polarity." I didn't notice the warning light on my panel and energized, resulting in blowing out the convection microwave, 24/100 house bank charger, Chinese made TV lift system, Italian espresso machine, Ericsson phone and Internet system, cordless phones, and a "Monster" brand surge protector that saved all of our other home theater equipment.

The yard immediately investigated. Though it was the fault of the electrician contractor (and was totally avoidable by me, as well), they stepped up, paid for all of the replacement equipment, expedited the shipping to ensure that we had everything fixed. I even had to get a new TV to fit the new lift system; and they paid for that. They also had an electrician come out and ensure that there wasn't anything else that I had not noticed. The repairs were made in three workdays (even authorizing some overtime to ensure that we were not further delayed).

These guys are really "stand-up" guys, who also know their trades quite well. I highly recommend.

Tried and True Repair Facility, 2016-07-15
Captain: , East Greenwich, RI (660)

I was delivering a boat last week and pulled in for repairs. With one day of notice they were able to have 4 different trades on the boat the morning after our arrival. This is a great working boat yard that has been in business since 1936

Excellant Service - Great Place to Stop, 2016-07-13
Captain: , Detroit Yacht Club (10)

I was directed here by Boat US for repairs incurred on the ICW in May. Repairs were made professionaly and as rapidly as possible. They also did extra work on time and were reasonably priced.
This is also a very good loacation prior to the Great Bridge to get supplies, etc. They have arrangements for transportation with local grocery store and are close to good restaurants.
Many thanks to Jack Stumborg, James Taylor and Marty Smith for keeping in touch during repairs and completing them as repidly as possible. A very professional and friendly group.

Excellent Service - great team, 2016-05-11
Captain: , Southport, NC (140)

When we purchased Shangri-La at AYB, we knew she needed some updating and refreshing. The James and Marty at AYB lead a professional team of 'get it done' tradesmen. Whenever something came up needing a pro to get involved, they were on it pronto. We had a lot of work done. The total package came in on budget and on time for our scheduled arrival. Thank you all for a great experience!

Great Place!, 2016-05-10
Captain: , North Palm Beach, FL (490)

We stopped by here on ARIES 5/9 for a night and we were happy we did! Ed did a great job moving boats around, then giving us the tour of all the sheds. Folks here could not have been more helpful. Dock masters are on duty here 24 hours and we took on fuel 0600 the next morning. Next time, we will stay awhile! Anne & Peter on ARIES

Great fuel stop for lock and bridge, 2016-04-16
Captain: , Chesapeake Beach, MD 20732 (200)

Great fuel prices with 24 hour fuel service. I get fuel and ait at dock for the lock and bridge to open Cheap overnight but not much near by or on site.

A very nice place, 2016-03-20
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (70)

Well staffed, well stocked, fast and friendly service. I always like stopping at AYB

Excellent repair yard and stopover, 2015-11-10
Captain: , Alameda (667)

We got here on Saturday morning when the yard was closed to deal with a leaking transmission and one more bad water hose. Called ahead to let the dock master know, and he asked that we check in on Ch16 after the lock and bridge - coming southbound. After checking in we were directed to a slip around the back in the basin, where the dock master was waiting to help us settle in.

We spent the weekend here - walking distance to groceries, several restaurants, shopping. Very convenient location. Showers are limited on the property, a fairly long wait one day. Laundry facilities in the yard and a dry cleaner next door if you want it!

Monday morning James came by at 8am and we debugged the transmission - thankfully just some mis-assembly by the transmission shop that had worked on it a month ago, which was easily managed. Replaced a hose and we were underway by 9:30. Great help. Friendly staff. Fast repair. Good internet. Very good experience here.

Very Convenient, 2015-11-10
Captain: , Bedford, NH (775)

Stopped for one night (11/1) after having to wait for the construction scheduled opening of the RR bridge and going through the lock. Because of the limited bridge schedule, about 14 boats locked through at once, most of which stopped here at about the same time. The staff was a bit overwhelmed and it took a very long time to get fuel and slip assignments. I am sure it isn't normally like this. We stayed right next to the fuel dock for the night which was very easy in and out. Weather was rainy so the walk to town could have been better. Had a great dinner at the local Japanese Restaurant. Great place to stay.

Arrived for the night then returned for a six week stay undercover, 2015-11-04
Captain: , London (709)

Good place to stop as its just before the lock, looked around and we were amazed to find so many covered slips with boats from 20ft to 90ft. The yard is very busy and looks like it provides a good service.

We returned at the end of the summer and left our boat in the covered storage for 6 weeks. During this time there was the flooding from the passing hurricane which raised the water level about 4ft. Without me having to ask and with no charge they lowered our ariels to make sure they did not hit the roof of the covered dock. Thats what I call service!.
On another note dont ask for a diver unless you get a price that you accept first Nuff said!

There is a Farm Fresh store in easy walking distance and lots of other stores and restaurants.
Looking around the sheds is like a boat show on its own, dont miss it.

Full service, active, and excellent staff, 2015-11-02
Captain: , Moyock, NC (1084)

Sep-Oct 15, 2015 We kept our boat here for month in a covered slip while adding a compact washer and spending time with area family members and friends. The facilities are not 5-star but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. They have a lot of people working here daily in a highly active marine yard, and a lot of boats coming and going almost every day. However, the marine store and all the staff were extremely courteous and helpful. This was our first stay with them and they made us feel at home. We were easily able to come and go, or stay on board feeling safe secure and close to many emenities in Great Bridge - all within walking distance.

Proficient, 2015-11-01
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (1234)

Seemed like a whole bunch of us landed here at the same time after coming thru Great Bridge - the staff and helpful boaters got us landed on the face dock with no drama.

The price is right, but would give it 5 stars except for the fact that the men's facilities are limited - one shower and one commode; can make for an AM rush hour.

As I understand, they do great work here, but luckily, we didn't need any. Would stop here again

Convenient stop for fuel, water, pumpout, 2015-10-27
Captain: , Jamestown RI (263)

Echo all other reviews. Stayed for one night. Convenient on/off ICW to large face dock. Did not use any facilities. Arrived late afternoon with multiple boats coming in. Josh was courteous and professional.

Nice stop for fuel!, 2015-10-26
Captain: , Everett, WA (939)

We stopped here going South and were greeted by great fuel prices and an open spot along the long pier set aside for fueling boats. Easy in and out- well wroth the stop if you need it.

Great stop, 2015-10-25
Captain: , Charleston, SC (364)

We stopped to fuel and overnight. Fuel dock was very busy and limited slips available. Did not use any facilities so can not comment.
As others have stated staff ( we only met one ) was very professional. Josh handled several large boat converging on fuel dock at once ( some without prior notice or reservations with pleasant efficientcy.

Always a good place to stop, 2015-10-18
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (1244)

October 2015. Same comment. Paid $1.98 all in for fuel. Highely recommended! Docks need some work or would be five stars.

June 2015
Stopped again on my way north. Docks need some updating. Competent, friendly staff and still among the least expensive fuel stops on the east coast. Easy walk to groceries, restaurants, etc in near by shopping center. Always a pleasant visit.

The first/last 10 miles of the ICW is always trying. AYB helps make it a bit more bearable. Excellent fuel prices, competent and friendly staff. Easy walk to groceries, sundries and restaurants. Covered sheds if you choose to leave the boat there for an extended time.

Easy fuel, docking on the ICW, 2015-10-12
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7375)

Nearly the least expensive diesel in Virginia. Several fuel pumps, easy to tie up to fuel dock and later move to an overnight spot. Restrooms, showers were adequate, clean. Lots of area to walk your dog.

Convenient & reasonable, 2015-10-11
Captain: , Erie, Pa. (1896)

Right on canal, prices are as good as it can get, Dock $1.00 per foot, diesel $3.50 and 5 cent discount over 200 gal. Power is weak, 100 amp plug generated 200 volts or less, checked numerous dual 50 amps and not in phase. Dockmaster very cordial, short walk to all restaurants etc.

10-11-15 Diesel $1.93 over 200 gal. $1.00 per foot p[lus $25 for 2 x 50 amp. 12 feet water in back basin

First class repair, 2015-09-11
Captain: , merritt island, fl. (55)

We dinged the prop on our trawler Sunday afternoon. Called Atlantic Yacht Basin first thing Monday morning. Within an hour they had us pulled and by the end of the day we were back in the water with a reconditioned prop. The boat runs smoother than it ever has. Thanks to all for the excellent service and especially the prop shop for the reconditioning.

Convenient, 2015-08-25
Captain: , Oriental, NC (231)

In need of fuel, water, and a pumpout, we stopped here 27 May 2015 instead of tying up at the free public docks across the canal. It's an easy walk to groceries, pharmacies, etc. The transient dockage seems to all be on the face rather than in the basin itself.

Tired but inexpensive, 2015-07-16
Captain: , United States (3192)

This is our first stop here after having passed it several times in both directions. We usually partake of one of the free docks on either side of the bridge, but on this trip the mercury had climbed well past the 90 mark and we wanted full-time air conditioning. For a buck a foot we decided to give the generator a rest.

The docks are in rough condition, the power outlets are corroded, and the WiFi is barely usable. Really the only thing this place has going for it is the price.

I've written before about the great Mexican restaurant, El Toro Loco, across the street and some of the other nearby dining options. On this visit, we found a new Italian place, Vino Italian Bistro, which replaced an unremarkable eatery that I remember as someone-or-other At The Lock. The Italian Bistro is equally unremarkable and this Italian-American found it not worth a repeat visit.

Great Location!, 2015-06-24
Captain: , Rockland, ME (283)

We stopped here for an overnight heading north on the ICW after missing the 4:00pm Centerville Turnpike Bridge Opening. We had a reservation at the Top Rack Marina but decided to stay here instead and catch the top of the hour Great Bridge/Lock opening. Easy docking on the face dock and an easy walk to restaurants, shops and a nice grocery store at the nearby strip mall adjacent to the marina's entrance. One perk we didn't take advantage of was propane tank filling right across the street at the gas station...easy!

Great stop for reprovisioning, 2015-06-21
Captain: , Ft. Lauderdale (420)

My star rating is for the marina only as I did not use the services. It is getting tired. 10 minute walk to the the liquor store and supermarket. Marina no longer provides curtesy car, nor does the grocery store provide transport any longer. Call Vickie 757-462-9160 for a cab if you buy too much to carry.

Interesting stop, 2015-05-21
Captain: , Bethel (130)

The long docks make for easy access, and a long walk to the minimal shower facilities if you end up tied upstream. Facilities are limited and a bit tired, but the location is good and watching the shells on the river is fun both morning and evening.

Best spot for protected storage, 2015-05-13
Captain: , Oriental NC (10)

I had stopped as a transient a couple of times & found no place better for shopping and restaurants nearby. The staff was just the best. When we could not go south this past winter, so we stored there for 7 months. I could not have had a better experience. Great protected storage & excellent staff. We had the boat hauled, painted, and some other work done. ALL was compleated in a timely manner, done well, and at a fair price. I plan on keeping the boat there from now on, when not cruising.

Have work done here, 2015-05-06
Captain: , Boothbay Harbor, Me. (30)

I wouldn't consider coming to the Norfolk area WITHOUT stopping here (26 TIMES). Very low fuel price, real grocery and resturants a few steps away and then walking the "Sheds" is something between going into a candy store or a visit to the best marine museum ever.
If you have an issue with your boat sit down with James- he's the guy at the picnic table- and listen to what he says. James has done-it-seen- it all. He has resolved issues for me that major "Best" yards could not. World class craftsmen of all trades work here.

Now that all the bridge's are gone through Norfolk (35') it is a great kick-off point for the route North on YOUR schedule. Enjoy all the "Navy" stuff in the morning.

Unique Marina just South of Norfolk, 2015-05-03
Captain: , Louisiana, MO (391)

We left our boat at AYB under covered storage for a month in mid-2014 with great results. I'd consider it a great spot to weather a hurricane. They did some routine maintenance and discovred some minor issues I wasn't aware of beforehand. We stopped again in May 2015 due to a couple days of bad weather. THEIR NEW WI-FI SYSTEM IS EXCELLLENT! I'd be careful laundering whites here.

Don't have work done here, 2015-04-27
Captain: , florida (60)

We have logged over 150,000 NM part of it being 16 trips up and down the ICW from Florida to Michigan. For years we used Atlantic Yacht Basin as our "go to" yard. We stored there several summers and had well over $200,000 of repairs done there over the years. The last two times we were there 2012, 2013 we had significant problems with the work they did. Most recently, in 2013, we left our boat for the summer with a long list of items to be repaired and an agreed to delivery date on those items. I flew back on the delivery dates to check completion and despite what I had been told things were not even near completion on the projects. One of the major projects was a new $9,000 enclosure which we left in the fall with it not done properly. While the enclosure was a subcontractor they were to manage the work (and were paid to do so). One of their in house projects was to reseal the windshields. The work was not done properly and has susequently caused the windshields to delaminate and have to be replaced. So far this has cost me weeks of lost use of my boat and over $30,000 to get repaired. There answer has been "not our problem". They authorized a few hundred dollars to fix their mistakes for repairs they charged me over $5000 to do. When I said that was not going to work they said not our problem must have been bad sikaflex (which they bought and provided). The sikaflex factory representative looked at the problem and said they did the job wrong. Glass installers in Florida looked at the glass and the job and said they did it wrong. Atlantic's answer remains "not our problem". They also had problems with some pretty small tasks. They "fixed" a leak around a hailer horn that continued to leak and had to be repaired in Moorehead City the day after we left, the fiberglass repair they did turned brown with in a few months etc etc. I like their staff and always recommended them however based on our last two experiences I would STRONGLY recommend and have done so to all our friends on the waterway that they go else where for repairs.

Management response:
Atlantic Yacht Basin (AYB) has and always will stand by its work.

Within 10 days of notification that the SIKA product might be defective, AYB authorized Mr. Holmes to have the windows recaulked at AYB’s expense. He never had the windows recaulked.

AYB’s sub-contractor volunteered to fly down, at his own expense, to the boat to meet Mr. Holmes and discuss the canvas work and Mr. Holmes refused.

Great place to winter your boat, 2015-04-26
Captain: , Newcastle upon Tyne (533)

We kept our boat here from November to April in the covered sheds. Staff were consistently friendly and helpful. We even got a free month as we were recommended by a previous customer. Safe, secure, and convenient.

Full service boatyard, easy docking, 2015-04-12
Captain: , Chicago, Racine, Fish Creek,Wi (3189)

We stayed with another boat traveling North with us On April 10,11 2015. Strong storms were predicted and we wanted a safe place to stay. It met our expectations to weather the storms. Good help when docking. Many restaurants in walking distance and a very good grocery store about .75 mile away. Showers, laundry, and washrooms are what you would expect in a working marina.

Full service boatyard, 2015-02-01
Captain: , Greenport, NY (10)

AYB is a great place to store, refit, or repair your yacht/boat. AYB has high yacht standards and excellent craftsmen such as painters, carpenters, mechanics, and systems experts - many of them loyal 30-year employees with customer relationships to match their longevity. AYB has five in-water storage sheds, complete with 24-hour security/dockmaster, electrical service and water, making it a perfect place to take your vessel out of service for family or business obligations without having to fully decommission. They even accomodate qualified DIYers. I LOVE this facility!

Great Yard + Great Staff, 2015-01-27
Captain: , Ottawa ON (10)

We have stopped at AYB 3 times now (most recently Nov./Dec. 2014). Their rates are excellent and the yard does very good, professional work. The yard is a good working yard, there is laundry ($1/wash), showers and much improved wifi. We have had our mast stepped, have been hauled out, had thru hulls and cutlass bearings changed and have had other engine repairs done. The staff has treated us like family and have taken excellent care of our boats and us. A Dockmaster is on 24/7 and during heavy wind and storms additional staff is brought on to adjust lines and fenders and keep a good watch on the boats. The ships store is well stocked and prices are fair. Excellent grocery store, and Mexican Restaurant (El Toro Loco) are within easy walking distance. We are 42 ft sailboat with 6 foot draft.

Great Experience 15 Dec 2014, 2014-12-16
Captain: , Colonial Beach, VA (650)

Dockhand helped with every aspect of tying up -- stayed one night. He was professional. He gave us summary of marina and services bringing up wifi and other issues without being asked. Diesel was $2.73 per gallon (over) 200 gallons. All in all fantastic place. I wiill also stop here in future trips thru the area. They do care if you are satisfied.

good place to spend a calm night, 2014-12-12
Captain: , Santa Maria CV (415)

we came in just for one night. Found a nice place, friendly staff and everything you need to spend a calm night. looks realy like a working marina. We had nothing to fix, but if we would have - I'm sure you can get everything here. short walk for shopping and restaurants.

A boatyard with the right stuff, 2014-11-24
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (1344)

Heading south to Florida, we brought our new-to-us American Tug 34 to Atlantic Yacht Basin with some newly discovered problems, and James Taylor assigned ace technician Brian Gould to help us deal with water-in-the-fuel problems, polish fuel, chase a generator overheating problem (which required replacing a defective exhaust elbow), and handle a few other small jobs. Through two days of work, Brian proved himself an extremely capable technician who thoroughly understood yacht systems and was excellent both at troubleshooting and making repairs. He was also consistently upbeat and positive and made it clear throughout the process, as did James Taylor, that AYB wants to make its customers happy.

In my case, James, Brian, dockmaster dockmaster Damien Brown and customer satisfaction and quality control guru Marty Smith all pitched in and provided us a great experience. So did Faye in the office. They and the entire AYB team get an "A" from me!

Unlike many other yards where auditing the bill has sometimes brought me bad surprises, the AYB bill was clear, precise, correct in every detail, and the pricing was very fair.
I wish other boatyards of my acquaintance had AYB's terrific focus on keeping customers happy.

Working boatyard, 2014-11-14
Captain: , Minnetonka, Minnesota (11)

Good people. Dockmasters helped us during dock repairs, James Taylor made sure our service requests were handled promptly, the marine store had what we needed, the office staff is pleasant. My wife would like upgraded bathrooms, but, AYB is a working boatyard. Will return here in the Spring.

Dependable marina, 2014-10-31
Captain: , Oriental, NC (110)

We have stayed here several times. Great place with a long dock to tie side-to. If you need mechanical service this a boatyard that is dependable.

Fuel prices were very competive., 2014-10-29
Captain: , Ft Lauderdale, Florida (20)

The service attendant was very helpful. The fuel pump was semi fast. Easy to tie up to face dock. Right on the Intracoastal Waterway. Would use them again

Personable and Professional, 2014-10-28
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (486)

Wonderful staff, all are helpful and friendly, and the job they did scraping and repainting our bottom was first rate. This is a busy yard, and we can see why. We would trust them with any work that needed to be done on our boat.

Fantastic old boats to visit, 2014-10-25
Captain: , Clayton, NY (655)

The marina was packed because high winds were keeping people from traveling so we were on the back docks but very secure. They did their best to get a lot of boats in out of the weather. This is definitely a working yard. There were boats of all sizes being repaired everywhere. We loved walking the docks. The bathrooms were minimal - one toilet and 2 showers for 50 boats. The twon was definitely walking distance to the Farm Fresh grocery store that steamed your shrimp while you wait. There were also othere shops to borwse in.

Nice Place to get repairs, 2014-10-23
Captain: , Cambridge, MD (170)

We stopped to "hide" from bad weather and wait until one of our buddy boats had their bottom done. I decided to take advantage of our layover and have a couple issues addressed. Bobby did a great job and had us ready to continue our journey in a couple hours. James is an excellent Service Manager and all the staff of AYB made our stay very comfortable. Don't be put off by the "old looking" docks and buildings. This is a first class repair facility.

Overnight for fuel on the way south, 2014-09-17
Captain: , naples, florida (90)

This place is very well known and after taking three hours to transit the ###!!! brigdes and lock heading south from Norfolk we were very glad to get there in a driving rain. It's open 24/7 which is good because it was late. Hey, getting through those bridges at rush hour is just not recommended!. Easy side tie at the face dock and friendly fuel service. Then a 10 minute walk to the Mexican restaurant. Very good but be VERY careful crossing the highway, lots of high speed traffic. Afraid the AYB is looking pretty tired these days. The facilities are in real need of a clean up and fix up. The docks are falling apart and the showers and bathroom are marginal at best. You will probably stop here because there isn't anything else nearby, but you won't linger unless you need service work.

Be careful of the service department, 2014-09-15
Captain: , St. Petersburg (749)

We had our stabilizers serviced by AYB which involved replacing the upper and lower seals. A year later we had them checked by Stabilized Marine out of Ft. Lauderdale who pointed out to me the poor quality of AYB's work. One critical issue was that AYB used bolts that were too short to attach the shaft collars back to the underside of the boat (only about 1/4" was holding them to the boat). The stabilizers also were not bonded which caused the shafts to be pitted to a point where they had to be replaced (the missing bonding wires were an existing issue that AYB didn't catch but should have. I should state that I already had pitting but not as much when AYB looked at them). I also had them investigate a leaking vacuflush toilet that they worked on for a couple of hours (and charged me for) but didn't fix. I was able to determine the issue within 15 minutes after buying the vacuum test pump that should have been part of normal diagnostics. There were several other issues that would make this post too long. My advice is to go somewhere else for service work.

Pump Replacement, 2014-09-15
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (10)

Excellent work finding and replacing raw water pump (Perkins 135 hp, Monk 36). Took a week to find the part, no charge for leaving the boat. Work was done well and quickly.

Slow down and step back in time at AYB, 2014-09-12
Captain: , Fort Pierce, Florida (60)

We extended our planned stay at AYB because we enjoyed the atmosphere so much! We found it a great place to stretch our legs, do some cleaning and maintenance and re-provision our boat for our continued journey north in the Chesapeake. The entire staff at AYB was courteous, friendly and helpful. The staff was working on quite a few antique and classic wooden vessels, which is a passion of ours. They seemed as enamoured as we, answering our questions and providing interesting history and tidbits of information about their work and the individual history of the boats. AYB is a working boatyard, not a deluxe marina with all of the typical luxury amenities. AYB reminded us of boatyards we grew up in.... where vintage buildings, tools and equipment, and old-time craftmanship and expertise breathed new life into beautiful classic yachts. We were surprised that many of the staff had worked for AYB most of their adult lives, in fact. The dock areas are adequate, its the staff, fellow cruisers and interesting collection of vessels (...everything from rowing shells to Fead ships) that makes a stay here such an enjoyable experience. For anyone wishing to store their vessel or just spend a short time, AYB has very reasonable rates and is conveniently located adjacent to Great Bridge. It's also only a short ride from or to the Norfolk airport.

Great Spot, 2014-09-01
Captain: , Oriental,NC (588)

Pulled in here for a night, what a great place. Friendly staff, washroom was good, and there is a huge area to let the dog run around. Very cool boats being worked on here as well. Walking distance to a great Mexican restaurant.

Captain: , Great Bridge, Virginia (35)

When we bought our GB 42 in 2007, it was located at AYB. We opted to keep it there after we purchased it for a couple of reasons: we could keep it under cover & and it is a working yard.
Now, over 7 years later, we still keep our GB at AYB. The quality of their work is top-notch. All of their staff, from mechanical to carpentry, from paint & varnish, and everything in-between -- are professionals who have years of experience.
I have been around the yard long enough to see a wide variety of yachts worked on here-- old classics, wood, glass, contemporary mega-yachts, pocket cruisers, outboards-- you name it...they can work on it.
The Marine Store is well-stocked and a great resource. I have received a lot of great advice on "how-to" re: repair/replacement.
In addition, AYB has an excellent and responsive cadre of subcontractors, from refrigeration to electronics.
And finally, location: AYB is within walking distance to an excellent grocery store and plenty of restaurants.
I feel so strongly about this yard, that when we are cruising and have a problem, unless it is something that is beyond my ability to remediate and requires a repair for us to continue on, I will wait until I get back to AYB to have the problem addressed.
And finally, my wife feels as strongly about AYB as I do.
I know there are other facilities on the east coast that have excellent reputations and offer quality services. I also know other boat owners whose home ports are far from AYB, who will wait until they are passing thru Great Bridge on their way North or South, to have work done on their vessels at AYB.

easy on and off fuel, 2014-08-04
Captain: , Bethlehem, PA (736)

Great fuel prices and easy on and off fuel dock. Great place for the night, even when full they found a spot for us - they have a very few slips without electricity (we were there when they were totally filled to capacity) but at least we were tied up safe and sound.

Great staff and friendly customers, 2014-07-07
Captain: , Fort Myers, FL (117)

We stayed here one night on our way south from Norfolk to Fort Meyers, Florida. Found the dockmaster very helpful with knowledge of the area and the next legs of our journey. Very easy walking access to good restaurants and a great Grocery store, plus pharmacies, dollar stores, etc. Spent the evening in adirondack chairs talking with the other mariners over wine. Clean facilities- a nice place to tie up for the night.

Why isn't there a zero-star option?, 2014-06-26
Captain: , wensleydale (940)

We've only been in mainland USA for a couple of weeks and the think we've enjoyed most about being here has been how friendly and helpful everyone is. AYB brought us back to earth:

We stopped at Great Bridge in the hope of getting our seawater pump fixed as they're apparently Authorised Yanmar Engineers & Suppliers. My enquiry as to getting the repair done was 'we don't repair them it's easier and more cost effective (for whom?) just to replace them. A follow-up enquiry as to how much/how long to get a new pump was met with 'can't say' whereafter my suggestion that they might perhaps be able to look it up on their computer? Was met with "do you want one or not? If you're placing an order, then we'll look it up." It was early in the morning, I might well have been the first customer of the day? Hey, I'm married to a girl that doesn't 'do' mornings! But even in England, retailers are prepared to quote you a price & delivery period before expecting you to place your order.

I walked away, Google-searched, then emailed/phoned an outfit called Bay Shore in Annapolis who managed to answer my questions both civilly and helpfully, then sent me the parts by UPS in less than 24 hours - that's 5-star service!

Good but not great, 2014-06-21
Captain: , Weston, VT (570)

Tied up here now for one night. Am single handed for this week and Ed (dockmaster) big help although with no tides, current etc side tie was easy. My complaint is shore power. Could only get one leg of my 120 to work and 230 never had power. Ed brought and connected a booster which lit up both 120's but one leg was fluctuating very strangely so disconnected. Had to run my genset to have AC and other half of 120. Only here for one night so not a huge deal but in over two years of cruising this was first marina with this problem.
Good wifi and easy walk to some dining.

Excellent work, but, 2014-05-28
Captain: , Lewis Creek, Md (1304)

I recently had some work done at AYB, new a/c, rebed stanctions, redo engine fuel tank sensors, stop engine water leak, replace fuel lines, work on compatablity issue with depth sounder, and adding float switches. There were two issues, the service manager was off so it took 14 calls to get follow-up on two occasions, and I did not know about the 15 % overage on subcontracted work)( in this case a/c refrigeration and marine electronics) which increased the bill by $700. The new A/C was 3500 plus 15% which was similar to another estimate I got from Denton's in Oriental minus the 15 %. Ask questions!

Excellent Value, 2014-05-16
Captain: , Tarpon Springs (983)

Excellent value on both fuel and dockage. There was no wake at all on the outside dock and the staff were great. In the morning you just pull out (Northbound) for whichever bridge opening you choose. Shops a five minute walk away. Recommended.

Always take my boat to AYB, 2014-05-05
Captain: , Virginia Beach (50)

Always take my boat to AYB. Great people that do great work. Installed a wash down pump and dripless shaft seal among various other wish list times this year. Painted, polished and ready to go quickly.

My Favorite Yard, 2014-04-29
Captain: , Stuart, Florida (50)

I left my boat at AYB over the winter for repairs and updates. The work was completed on time, on budget and was first class.
Anything I questioned was immediately taken care of.
It's a good place to lay-over and the fuel prices are the lowest around.

A very competent working yard with a convenient stop, 2014-04-20
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

This actually is several ratings. The ship yard and long term storage rate 5 stars. The mangaement and staff also rate 5 stars. This four star rating is only applied to the marina facilities side. The bathrooms are clean but very dated and only have one shower and toilet in each men's and women's bathrooms. This is a working yard so expect the typical traffic, and noise and dust associated with a working yard. This yard can do it all with experience dating back 40+ years. Long face dock for transients is secure and convenient and not subject to wakes from commercial traffic, just the occasional inconsiderate private boater rushing to make the bridge opening. The staff go out of their way to accomdate your needs when asked. For example, the electrical system is 208 volts (commercial type) not 240 volts, which may cause issues with some A/C motors on startup. If you have a problem they have and will provide a power booster at the hook up for yoiur boat. Unfortuneltly for me my ultra sophisticated inverters only would pass one leg into to the boat since the A/C wave form is 120 degrees not 180 and the booster couldn't help that. This is an issue with my one invertor that the manufacturer claims should work however it has never permited the 120 though. This certainly is my problem not the Marina's. AYB is a great protected, secure spot with on site staff 24/7. You can leave your boat if necessary and feel comfortable that it will be looked after and be secure while you are gone. I will stop here again.

Good stopover marina, 2013-12-06
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (216)

We spent three days laying over for weather. Convenient to shopping center with multiple restaurants.
We'll stocked marine hardware store with decent prices.

Rest rooms were clean and convenient. Lounge with TV, coffee and internet was a welcome find.

Atlantic Yacht Basin, 2013-11-20
Captain: , Essex, CT (30)

This is a fantastic yard. I keep my boat there when I am on the West Coast. It is a hurricane hole, has covered slips, a fantastic full service yard with the best manager (James Taylor) and a staff that cares. They have fuel and pump out capability. The quality of work is excellent and fairly priced. Walking distance to grocery stores, restaruants, hardware, and propane. Wow!

We stay there for a last minute plan change, thei toke use on the spote with two nice staff to help use with line. We add a realy quite and nice night there. And price are good to, plus a lot of service in walking distance.

Atlantic Yacht Basin, 2013-10-22
Captain: , Quoset Daviseville Naval Yacht Club (250)

Just south of locks, good price on fuel and only 1.00 foot for transient. Laundry and Dryer at $1.00, great long term rates and under cover storage availabe at $1.00 a foot more if you are leaving boat. Modest charge per month for battery maintenance. This is also a working yard with a lot of work in progress.

Owners were having annual pulls down as they cruise because of great rates. Some of the owners I talked to have used repair facilities in past and are back for mainenance and work again.

A marina owner that is willing to supply reasonable rates and high quality service.

Not impressive looking marina but impressive value.

Easy walk to every store you might need to restock and great ship store.

Very helpful staff, 2013-10-22
Captain: , Michigan (583)

Agree with earlier comments - we have stopped here several times and will continue to schedule fuel and supplies here. After coming through Norfolk and waiting for Steel bridge (didn't open at 10am as schedule because of train) then making the locks during a very busy time frame it was great to tie up early and relax.

Great Marina, nice folks, 2013-09-17
Captain: , Winter Garden, Fl (2391)

We have stopped at other marinas in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area in the past - up in the city. After hearing and reading about AYB we decided to try it out. There are no frills, it's a working yard and you are on a face dock. However, it has some of the best fuel prices, dock rates, laundry facilities ($1 per machine), and a complete ship's store. You can take a five minute walk and get to groceries, lliquor store, restaurants and bank. The staff is pleasant and, unlike some other marinas that have kids working the docks, these folks know what they're doing when you come in for fuel or to stay the night. Very well run facility, we will return here rather than the higher priced venues north of here.

A great stop with provisioning nearby, 2013-08-31
Captain: , Guilford, CT (120)

After an eight day run from Guilford, CT we stopped at AYB for two nights to rest up, provision and do laundry. They have a special on right now, $1.00 a foot. The laundry machines are also only $1.00 to wash, $1.00 to dry. There is a strip shopping center less than a half a mile away with a Farm Fresh food store where they will even cook you breakfast. The only negative: my Captain used the self-help pumpout next to our dock. The hose was old, and broke midway through the process. Luckily his body blocked the effluent from getting all over our boat :)

AYB Reads ActiveCaptain Marina Minute, 2013-08-06
Captain: , Buffalo, New York (1809)

Though our stay was planned as a functional stop, AYB makes it easy and pleasant. Team supporting the docks are very helpful and pleasant. Laundry is easy to use and reasonably priced. Ladies room is newly renovated. Farm Fresh is a 6 minute walk, and, nearby are AutoParts, RiteAid, Walgreens, Radio Shack, plus some. All the information we needed was current and detailed on the ActiveCaptain site, which makes planning easy. Only downside is that water has heavy sulphur scent.

It is what it is... Update 2013: Still a great yard., 2013-08-02
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (1306)

All the below is still true. WiFi is a little weak, but if you have a powered antenna it's okay.
I had problem not far away... the James Taylor, Service Manager along with the Jack, the owner, showed up and had me on my way that morning.
A convenient marina when leaving the bay to start back south to Fl or Bahamas. or a good place to store your boat for the summer.
Good old style boatyard... a bit pricey but not too bad.
Interesting to watch all boats coming and going as they all have to stop for lock and bridge.
One caveat is Ayers Marine Electronics tends to put their thumb on the hour meter. Tried to charge me 6.5 hours labor for 2 hours work. And... I was on the boat helping.
The young fellow who did the work was pretty good but must have lost his watch. Have heard the same from other boaters.
AYB has other Marine Electronics guys available.
Other than that, I had a good experience.
Will have them do my bottom job upon returning to the Chesapeake.

Everybody is right!, 2013-07-01
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1850)

This is a great marina with all of the services. Everybody's reviews are spot on. There is nothing new I can add other than my agreement.
The only thing you need to watch for is not about the marina but the reach up into Norfolk from here. 1) Weather conditions at the marina and out in the harbor can be totally different. 2) If you want to get an early start out of AYB and Great Bridge on a weekday you have to make sure you time things so you can make Dominion Steel bridge for the 7:00am opening. There is no 8:00am opening on week days. That means going through Great Bridge bridge and lock on the 6:00am opening.

Great place for pretty much anything, 2013-06-30
Captain: , Fort Lauderdale (93)

Excellent facility, friendly staff, great prices. Close to supermarket and restaurants. Spent a week here and was amazed by the great atmosphere and the way the staff were so helpful. If you need a haul out or any work doing, this is the place. Don't pass by without stopping to say hello.

Easy access dock, 2013-06-22
Captain: , Jacksonville Fl (1550)

Great place to stage for run through bridges and lock into Norfolk. Dockage price can't be beat, best fuel price around. Clean facility, laundry a buck a load. Good grocery and restaurants a short walk away. Good place for any type of repairs or long term covered storage. Will stop again next time.

top notch choice, 2013-06-14
Captain: , Harrison Twp, MI (350)

Economically affordable ($1/ft transients) marina with great service. Clean showers, $1 laundry, guest lounge, spar services, metal shop, paint shop, electric motor shop, paint shop, wood shop, all repair work, marine part store. Friendly! All stores, restaurants, etc within walking distance. A noted hurricane hole. Beautiful rustic location. Staff is beyond friendly and helpful. #1 marina in my book.

Great Stop, 2013-05-29
Captain: , Solomons, MD (1025)

If you are northbound and trying to time your passage through the lock and bridges, there is no better stop than AYB. It is right next to the Great Bridge Bridge and very easy on and off the ICW. It is also a great place to provision for a longer journey with an ABS store and a grocery store within walking distance. We'll be back.

A REAL Marina, 2013-05-28
Captain: , Lewes, DE (178)

We had ordered parts the morning before and were scheduled for a stay over. We were running a bit late and it was getting dark as we headed north to the marina. As we went under the great bridge bypass the forward lookout yelled and I felt a bump. I pulled back the throttle just in time for the bump at the stern. But we had bent two blades on the prop backwards just enough to cause a vibration. Not only were the parts there that we had ordered, but they squeezed us in for a short haul and prop change on the Friday before Memorial day. James Taylor changed the prop himself as all other mechanics were already assigned their jobs. That's service! Shopping close, facilities good, boat yard outstanding.

First stop in Virginia, 2013-05-22
Captain: , Charleston, SC (140)

Long face dock on canal is easy docking just before Great Bridge. We stayed three nights because we had satellite TV installed by Ayers Marine Electronics. Todd put Cracker Jack Adam on the project. Adam is an example of hard working young American and one you know can count on to perform. We even had our surround sound system installed. If you need any electronic work done you MUST use Todd Ayers!
Bicycled up to main road, easy walk to everything you need for provisions and eateries. Court House Cafe will not disappoint.
Great dock rate at AYB.

Nice facility, 2013-05-13
Captain: , Apex, NC (224)

We stayed here for three days waiting out weather while going north this spring. The people are friendly, and it is a short walk to shopping and many food choices. The mens bathroom was a single stall affair, but I never had to wait. It was a treat to walk inside all of the covered sheds to look at the great old powerboats.

Excellent Bottom Paint Job, 2013-05-10
Captain: , Gloucester, Mass. (799)

We took advantage of the Active Captain special on bottom paint, adding hull cleaning, waxing and polishing. Got to say that in our 17 years of cruising the East Coast we have never seen such careful and thorough work. We felt as though Molly Blossom had gone to a spa for boats. Quoted price for the work was within $30 and well worth it. The ladies bathroom has been overhauled with new wood panelling, new floor, and a very pretty paint job. I'd like to have one like it some day. All the other positive things previously reported about the area are still correct. Thank you AYC for all the TLC.

Has everything you want or need, 2013-05-10
Captain: , Cape Coral FL (4188)

Great stop, one of the best we have been to in a long time. Spencer and his crew have it all here: easy docking, good fuel price (open 24 hrs/day), full service yard for repairs/maint., very good marine store, knowledgeable and courteous staff, close to restaurants, stores, grocery store, bank, etc. And the best of all: $1/ft !!! How can it be less than 5 stars?

Neatest mechanics ever, 2013-05-02
Captain: , Charleston, SC (72)

We recently stopped at AYB for repairs to fuel and oil leaks in our Ford Lehman SP275's. AYB did not have the parts (hardly anybody does), but diagnosed the problems immediately and ordered in the parts for the repairs. While we were stuck there, they updated us daily on progress and completed the repairs as soon as the parts arrived.
The best part of the ordeal was their mechanic, Tim. The days he worked on the boat, he was neat and organized and very particualar about covering our new carpets and not leaving a mess in the engine room or in the salon. He also explained what he was doing every step of the way. Definately would have work done there again.
Good job!!

Who knew..., 2013-04-20
Captain: , MV Red Head (3106)

We always knew that Atlantic Yacht Basin had convenient transient dockage right on the ICW at a great price. We also knew they did repair and maintenance work. What we didn't know was the extent of their yard and storage capabilities. Then Spencer Hull took us on a tour of the facility and we were amazed. We had no idea they had such extensive storage capabilities. There are six storage sheds providing in-water boat storage, most under cover. The first thing we noticed were the boats, each one beautifully maintained. It was clear that this was a place for boaters who really cared about quality work. The rest of the yard facilities showed the same kind of attention to detail one would want.

As for our overnight stay it was great. The facilities are good and it's a short walk to a shopping center with several restaurants. We will be back and will definitely consider storing our boat here once we have completed the Loop.

Best Breakfast Deal on the ICW, 2013-04-16
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (110)

This is a great marina to stay when there are April storms threatening the ICW. The staff are friendly, the price is right, there is a grocery store and restaurants nearby. And, we found the best breakfast deal in the produce section of the Farm Fresh grocery store. The deli dept cooks up 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, and 2 bacon or 2 sausage for under $3!!!

Perfect location, 2013-03-29
Captain: , Stafford, VA (1079)

This is the place to stop after a run up the ICW from Coinjock. You can get fuel while you wait for the bridge/lock opening. Friendly, helpful staff and stores nearby if you need something.

Wonderful Service, 2012-12-29
Captain: , Cuckoo, Va. (30)

Pulled in for some maintenance. The work was done promply and professionally. James Taylor and his crew really bent over backwards to get the jobs done. I had refigeration work (contractor excellent), electronics (contractor excellent) the tech came in on his day off (Christmas Eve) to help get me moving, machanical on site and excellent, carpentry well done. Stayed long theb I had planned, but if you have to get stuck some place this is the place. It's close to shopping, restaurents, grocery stores, and entertainment. Dock masters were all very helpful.

a great overnight, 2012-12-19
Captain: , New Bern, NC (40)

I stayed here in mid-dec and felt very comfortable and safe. I was helped by the dockmaster at the fueling dock and even his small son was friendly as he tried to help tie me up. I was then gently pulled back down the dock to spend the night on the outside dock. I was able to borrow a hose, questions were answered and even a nice place was found for breakfast (a filipino diner about a mile north over the bridge). The bath house always seems wanting here, but the friendliness, the packet of information and the community of boaters far outweighs this small issue.

AYB is Cool, 2012-12-05
Captain: , Seabrook, TX (260)

We left our sailboat here for two months, and could not have been happier. Had Hurricane Sandy gone ashore in VA instead of further north, this place would have been a great hurricane hole.

Showers are basic, but ok. The fact that there is a dockmaster on duty 24/7, who walks every dock at least three times a shift, was a comfort.

Impressive Ships Store.

Resonable place, 2012-11-18
Captain: , Oxford, Md (130)

Dockage is along bulkhead, power is good, staff friendly. Ladies bathroom has just been renovated, mens bathroom is useable but old hopefully will be renovated soon).

Good prices for dock and fuel, helpful staff, good laundry and showers, and all sorts of shopping within walking distance. Glad we stopped.

Captain: , Herrington Harbour, MD (680)

Nov 1,2 3. We went here to have AYB replace our washer and dryer, and check our electrical system after being hit by a surge at
Tideswater Marina in Portsmouth. We were lucky Home Depot could deliver quickly so we were able to complete the job.
We stayed there when Sandy went by and were perfectly safe.

A great stay, and a superb hurricane hole, 2012-11-02
Captain: , Cape Coral, FL (1541)

You can't get more convenient or professional than Atlantic Yacht Basin. We had to leave our boat on AYB%u2019s dock for two weeks while we took care of business up north, then arrived back at the boat just in time to sit tight for another five days as Hurricane Sandy blew through. We don%u2019t believe we could have been in a better spot the entire time: we knew when we were away that the staff was checking on the boat, and the location proved to be a great hurricane hole during the storm. We were impressed seeing the staff walk the docks every few hours throughout the storm, making sure all the boats were faring well. Everyone we met at AYB was friendly from the dock masters and office staff to the various yard/shop workers that were going about their business, but special kudos to the dock masters who always went out of their way to lend a hand or answer our questions. We were very impressed with AYB, and strongly recommend them. Great folks!

Carolina Loop Trip, 2012-09-06
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (282)

Stay at AYB on a short cruise doing the so called Carolina Loop. Friendly dockmasters and helpful but was expecting more regarding their facilities. Restrooms were not up to par. Gas is not ethanol free so be aware. Best of all is we met a yard worker who gave us the okay to do a self guided tour of the boat houses. This is worth the stop over as they store some very neat old and newer yachts. A who's who of yachts. Also looks like they have a huge yard capabilities.

Great New Attiude, 2012-09-05
Captain: , Sea Cliff, NY (1075)

AYB has been around a long time, and recently they have stepped up their game for cruisers. Take a look at the transient rate- $1 a foot! The dockmasters are second to none. Very helpful, extremely courteous, and they are on hand 24/7. Highly unusual, and greatly appreciated. Stores within walking distance, too. Of course, they have a yard that seems to be able to service most any boating-related issue.
We recently sold a boat through Virginia Yacht Brokers, which is located on site. Unbelieveably professional service by Chuck Grice, the owner of VYB. Boat sold in less than 90 days.
As cruisers we try to reward those facilities that are making an effort to earn our business. We will keep AYB on our list of preferred stops along the ICW.

Quick Haul Out, 2012-08-01
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (555)

Another yard had put the wrong parts on our Spurs. We determined with some phone calls to James Taylor the yard manager at Atlantic Yacht Basin that they had the correct parts in stock. Taylor and crew hauled us put the right parts on and we were back in the water with no problems. Very professional yard and good little marine store is on site. They then let us stay overnight on their docks to wait for the morning bridge and locks. We would definitely come back to this yard.

Conenient & Responsive, 2012-07-25
Captain: , Little River, SC (2037)

We wound up staying here because the Great Bridge was not working. God Fuelprices and a dockmaster on duty all night. Good Grocery and other shops within walking distance as well as several restaurants. Our refrigerataor was not getting as cold as it should. They had a technician show up that same afternoon. Who quickly diagnosed the problem (burned out cooling fan) and fixed it while his girlfriend was waiting in the car to go to dinner. The restrooms/shower facilities were in the process of being remodeled so the mens room was the ladies room amd the mens room was the employees lounge. Not inthe best of shape. Chose to use the on-board facities instead.

Ready to Help You, 2012-07-25
Captain: , St Augustine, Fl (480)

I was traveling up the ICW and lost one engine, they had a worker waiting at the dock to take my line, and had a mechanic on my boat within an hour. we did have a few snags in that the mechanic initially misdiagnosed the problem but they stuck with it until the job was done. I had some concernes about the amount of time the mechanic billed me for ( he would leave the boat quote a few times and then come back, but the manager worked it out to my satisfaction. I was satisfied. my only suggestion is maybe have the mechanic show up with a workorder in hand...have the owner sign hsi time start and then answer any questions. That woud save the marina from any misunderstandings with the customers. the ship store was awesome. I stocked up on fuel and oil filters while i was there.
The manager James Taylor made sure we were satisfied. I will use this marina again and recommend it.

Great place to buy a boat, 2012-06-26
Captain: , North Fort Myers, FL. (268)

If you want to buy or sell your boat you must visit this marina. The marina staff and the sells staff are great people. Also good price on fuel. Docks are covered and in great condition. I have not had any work done here but the yard has a good reputation. Great stopover along the ICW.

Safe and protected inside, 2012-06-10

Captain: , Saint Simons Island, GA (115)

Got fuel and overnighted here. Helpful staff and found us a place on the ICW. Recommended a local restaurant who came and picked us up/brought us back.
Did not need repairs, but is a large yard.

Best of the Best!, 2012-05-03
Captain: , Hilton Head (130)

AYC is in my experience the best boat yard in this area. James Taylor who manages repair and service work is top notch and - brace yourself - their pricing is fair and the work is done right the first time.
Can not recommend them highly enough!

Good location, 2012-04-26
Captain: , Monches,wi (330)

Good location either northbound or southbound. If northbound, do not make the same mistake we did. OPTING for the 800a Great Bridge opening rather than 700a will prevent an 1-1/2hr wait at the Steel Bridge. it doesn't open until 900a.

But a good marina nonetheless.

Excellent storage location, 2012-04-26
Captain: , Port Lavaca, TX (451)

Kept the boat in a shed here over the 2011/12 winter and had a fuel tank leak taken care of. Great folks, friendly service and round the clock knowledgable dockmasters. Very happy with our experience. Great location for winter storage and a starting place for moving north in the spring.

Hit a log, needed a quick prop fix, 2012-04-11
Captain: , City Island New York (600)

Hit a log on the canal, James Taylor the service manager put me in the sling within 10 minutes of my arrival, an hour later the prop was pickup and back by noon the next morning I was back in the water, great service great attitude, at a fair price, there is a Farm Fresh supermarket within 15 minutes walk.

These guys are pros., 2012-03-18
Captain: , NY, NY (115)

Easy fuel while waiting for the bridge northbound. Full service yard and parts available. A few nice restaurants and convenience stores close by. Friendly, competent, knowledgeable staff.

1st class work!, 2011-11-19
Captain: , Newport, R.I. (644)

Wonderful yard with knowledgable, talented staff. Have stayed here a few times & had excellent work done here in past under James Taylor.

Great people, 2011-11-09
Captain: , Westbrook, CT (453)

Stopped here due to spurs coming loose from the prop shaft and banging loudly. People were great, they called a diver, who in 15 minutes (aned $287) took care of the problem. Several other guests had mechanical issues which were efficiently resolved. Great location, including a supermarket 10 minutes walk away which delivered us and our groceries back to the marina. Several restaurants, ABC store, and propane all an easy walk away.
Downside - showers were very basic, and in the case of the women's, black with mold. Conclusion - great place to get problems resolved, not great for cleanliness.

Great Hurricane Shelter, 2011-09-07
Captain: , Dataw Island, SC (290)

Stayed here 1 week prior to and during Hurricane Irene - quite a facility and our boat was well protected in water in shed #2. Staff very helpful and dockmaster on duty 24/7. Excellent repair facility but amenities lacking and restrooms, showers not appealing and in need of repair.

Great Hurricane hole, 2011-08-31
Captain: , Stuart, FL (167)

Our boat rode out Irene here and she did not have a single scratch. The area around the marina only lost power for a few hours. The staff could not have been more helpful as many boats came here to escape the wrath of Irene. After the storm, there is a lot of shallow flooding in the marina and we had to walk through several inches of water to check out the boat. All in all, we were pleased that all the boats were secured and no damage from the high winds. The bad news is that that the locks are not operating and rumor has it that some of the bridges southbound on the ICW may have been damaged as well.

Very professional yard, 2011-08-14
Captain: , Rising Sun, DE (210)

We had quite a bit of work done on a new boat to get it ready for cruising (name change, plumbing, electrical, stainless). The work was performed very professionally and the price was fair given the work quality. We will go back to AYB in the future if we need more work.

Not new but nice, 2011-07-25
Captain: , Rock Hall Md. (138)

We stop here for fuel and food. They always are helpful with lines and docking. It is a short walk or bike ride to the stores and dinners. The showers work and are clean but don't look for spa quality.

A great yard on the ICW, 2011-07-17
Captain: , bear, de (364)

A great yard. We unfortunately struck a submerged object several miles south of Atlantic. We were in need of an urgent haul. Upon are arrival our boat was hauled immediately, the damage assessed and repaired promptly for a fair price. Jack Stumborg runs a great operation and James is a true professional

Convenient Location, 2011-06-29
Captain: , Baddeck, Nova Scotia (160)

Atlantic Yacht Basin is perfectly located for an overnight before tackling the bridges, lock and traffic on a northerly passage. The setting was nice, a walk through the covered slips will excite a woodenboat lover and supplies, provisions and dinner ashore are only a very short walk. Passage through the lock in the morning requires no calculations, you can cast off as the bridge is opening!
I'll plan on AYB as a stop on every northerly passage from now on.

Marina & Working Boat Yard, 2011-05-04
Captain: , Lancaster VA (393)

We stopped here after a rainy morning coming from Coinjock. Marina staff was friendly and available on the dock to help us in the rain. Restrooms and facility basic but clean - boaters lounge has TV and free coffee - washer and dryer only $1.00 per load. Fixed face dock with wood piles. Town is close and an easy walk.

Quiet time in Great Bridge, 2011-05-03
Captain: , Kings Creek Marina (766)

One of the easiest tie-ups on the ICW. Just drift in to the pier and let the dock boys secure you. Great staff. The Dockmaster has unlimited local knowledge. The local grocery store will even come pick you up, and return you after you shop for provisions. Cheap fuel. Clean showers. What more could you ask for?

Great Service, 2011-04-28
Captain: , St Augustine (413)

Stopped by with a slow shifting transmission. Service Mgr James was there to meet me. He found problem, fixed it in ten minutes( bad O ring), no charge. Filled up with fuel and on my way. Dock people very helpful.

Great place, 2011-04-03
Captain: , myrtle beach sc (20)

All-round great place to get work done, James Taylor is always available and very helpful. Covered storage is a plus

great place for summer storage, 2011-01-28
Captain: , Hampton, VA (2573)

Atlantic Yacht Basin is a great place to leaft you boat in the water while away. The yard does a great job looking after things and the bottom doesn't foul because the water is fresh/brackish. Just make sure that the bottom paint can handle fresh water.....somce can't

Friendly and Capable, 2011-01-23
Captain: , Ottawa, Canada (363)

This is largely a boat yard with minimal amenities. However, if you are looking to get some work done they have capable staff, a good parts department, and are led by James who is a very experienced. They are not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. Be aware that they do subcontract some work and will take a 15% markup on cost. Over all I was pleased with the work and thought I was treated fairly.

Must have been a bad day...., 2010-07-19
Captain: , Delray Beach, FL (327)

This is not a review of the yard or marina facilities....just a below average experience with the weekend dockmaster. Don't mistake their isolated easternmost bulkhead for the free dock! Tied up to wait for the Great Bridge Lock. Not a sign, boat or person in sight. I didn't verify the location of the free dock in the cruising guide as this looked like mistake. The dockmaster soon rode up in a golf cart and after hearing we were waiting the Lock became rude and irritated. He untied my bow line before I could get the engine started. Obviously this is a recurring problem, but could have been handled much more professionally. Signs would help....recommend a "Welcome to Atlantic Yacht Basin" sign or an hourly transient rate.

Right Place at the Right Time, 2010-07-05
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (1522)

I've only been to this location one time. I came off the Chesapeake and knew that the bridges heading south were closed in the morning so wanted to get by as many as possible before stopping. Stopped at AYB to fuel up and it started pouring rain. Decided to spend the night there and they put us in a covered dock. Yeah, the building are not modern and have a few cob webs but it was so nice to be out of the rain. The staff was great with directions and help. We decided to walk to Chili's which was relatively close.. unless it is raining. Then it seems like miles. I'm heading north on a delivery in a couple of weeks and I'd stop there in a minute.

Boat yard with conveniences, 2010-06-17

24 hr on premisis security. Very accommodating employees.

Boat yard, not really a marina, 2010-05-28
Captain: , Sarasota (1427)

Most reviews talk about their yard capabilities. We didn't need that, so we'll review it as a marina. 5/24/10 $1.75/ft $10/50amp The facilities are sort of old and run-down. I'm guessing they have the marina facility as a convenience for the yard. It is convenient being right on the ICW, but there are lots of free docks within a half mile that are comparable. The Court House Cafe (short walk) did an outstanding job with fresh fish. Supermarket is a short walk also.

Pleasant experience, 2009-12-10

Made a short haul from mile 0 to fuel and effect minor repairs and stay overnight. Dockmaster was waiting at fuel dock to take lines. Helped us to secure alongside for overnight stay, answered our many questions and made us feel at ease (novice boaters here!). Within walking distance (1/4 mile) were bank, food store, restaurants, dollar tree, etc. Also most services and marine supplies on site. Can you tell we're impressed? Not 5 stars 'cause pumpout not in service.

AYB Review, 2009-07-19
Captain: , portsmouth va (10)

We finished a 13 month interior remodel on a 1973 Hatteras 88 and were very pleased with all aspects of the project. AYB has the best craftsmen I have ever encountered. They take a tremendous amount of pride in their work. AYB has certainly earned our future business.

Good, reliable, full service yard, 2009-06-26
Captain: , Boston (40)

My father brought his boats to Great Bridge for decades for work. Traveling from Boston for winter storage to have major work done was worth it to him. The yard was good for him, so when we bought our boat we did the same.

Atlantic Yacht Basin has done extensive updates on our Grand Banks 52’ including the installation of stabilizers, bow thruster, hard top, fuel polishing system, fire suppression system as well as carpentry and painting. We have cruised from Maine to the Bahamas and the people at “AYB” have always been there when I had a problem. There is no job that they couldn’t handle and I plan to return again this fall.

Had a bad experience, 2009-05-19
Captain: , Fort Myers (769)

I think you have to be around when the work is being done. I felt that we were gouged on the service done to our boat as we were not there to oversee. They did not stand behind their substandard workmanship. We won't be back.

AYB Revew, 2007-07-09
Captain: , Cudjoe Key, Fl (1)

After years of experience with this, and many other, yards I believe that AYB offers some of the best overall service on the east coast. heir rates are average, and their capabilities are numerous. The management has shown the ability to correct any fault of workmanship, and as a result has accumulated a large and loyal customer following. It is always a good idea to have major projects estimated.
