Reviews for American Yacht Harbor Marina
A mixed bag, 2017-07-09
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (1342)

UPDATE 9 July 2017

Another day, another disappointment. Stopped to do some engine work (Island Marine is right here). Called when we got in cell range (about a day out) and got a slip assignment.

On arrival we could not get in the slip between wind and a flaky engine. Tied up on an empty t-head and called the office to let them know. Got yelled at by management for nearly an hour. It wasn't like we had anywhere we could go. Got off the phone anf fixed our problem and easily moved to the slip. Less yelling time and we would have been on the t-head for half the time.

Truly not impressed with AYH.

Tap and Still is still great for burgers. Customer service at Moe's Grocery, Island Marine, and Neptunes Fishing is outstanding.

Original review:

American Yacht Harbor has some really good and some less impressive characteristics.

I delivered a boat (Annapolis to St Thomas) into AYH arriving on 23 Jan 2017. The owner had made a reservation in advance. I emailed the marina a number of times from sea to confirm, to get more information about the location of the slip, and to get bathhouse access information (after two weeks at sea showers are a priority). No response.

The private rooms in the bathhouse are a good idea but they aren't very clean. The motion sensors that keep the lights on don't cover the shower or the toilet so they lights keep going out. They are a very long walk from the deeper draft slps.

The receptionist in the office was off-putting.

They do have a map of the marina on their website which is a good effort. I printed one before leaving Annapolis. The resolution is pretty low and the slip numbers aren't shown - this is a real issue when approaching a pier - are the slip numbers alternating, inside-out, or outside-in? Of great frustration was a nice, high-resolution map with slip numbers taped to the counter in the office. POST THAT ON YOUR WEBSITE.

The docks are in poor condition. Only 50 and 100 A service are available on the deep water docks.

They do have security on the docks 24 hours a day. The young man from security responded immediately to my VHF call (although he didn't know which side of the pier our slip was on) and showed up promptly with the bathhouse access card and WiFi passcode.

Fuel is available in the slips which is very nice.

On site restaurants Molly Malones and Tip & Still were very nice. The service at the Tip & Still was particularly nice - fast, courteous, and present without being intrusive.

The chandlery at the head of B dock is outstanding - a good inventory at very good prices. Impressive.

I hope IGY gives some real attention to management and infrastructure. They have a diamond in the rough at American Yacht Harbor but the "rough" approaches a lump of coal.

Excellent jump-off or return spot, 2017-05-04

We were impressed with AYH. Its location makes clearing in to the US very easy (just take the hourly ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John and clear in there, much cheaper than a taxi to Charlotte Amalie and the marina is about half the price of the CA one as well). Fun restaurants and bars on and just-off site, decent food store for provisioning, chandlery, dive shop, coffee shop, pet store, lots of other services, all within a friendly environment with nice staff and a good combination of locals and boaters. We had dinner with friends who were staying at the IGY in CA and were very happy we chose AYH. Also appreciated the two after-hours security guys being available on VHF to talk us into our slip and take our lines. Yes, the fixed wooden docks are old and weathered but we were happy to see that cleat bases were reinforced or replaced when needed and pilings were quite solid as well. Suprisingly little surge for an east-facing harbor but not the quietest place, especially with the pile driver currently there.

Pulled in because of engine trouble on our way to BVI, great help from the office staff and the dockmaster was at the dock waiting for me. The showers/bathrooms are private and clean, great setup. Laundry and mechanic on site. Walk off the boat to restaurants/bars/shopping galore. Great place to provision.

Good stop for fuel and water, friendly and helpful staff, 2016-04-22

Stopped in for fuel and water. Easy entry and exit, dockhand was helpful with lines and hoses, prices were OK typical of the VI. Did not feel rushed at all.

Nice place but low service quality, 2016-04-03

I had stop for water and fuel and I did it myseft! They let me go to the marine store without discussions. Price was ok.

We'll be back...soon, 2016-01-16

AYH found us a spot for an overnight, even during the busy holidays. Norman was quite accommodating. We also enjoyed lunch at Mollie Malone's and got provisions at Moe's.

Stopped by a week later for water and provisions. Again, AYH was very accommodating.

Unfortunately, I did not make arrangements ahead of time for a passenger drop off just after New Years. AYH was so busy, we just dropped the hook in the bay and took the dinghy into to A dock.

AHY is a busy and narrow marina with a following east wind, so I strongly encourage an invitation to enter via VHF. You and the marina will appreciate the coordination.

Great Place to Stay and Prepare for Cruising Further or Stay Awhile, 2015-12-05
Captain: , Virginia Beach, Virginia (84)

The staff at AYH Red Hook are very helpful and of the best quality that we have experienced. They worked with us to accomodate our mechanical problems and getting alternate slips and changes we needed to make. Top notch!
The facilities are very good. The docks are weathered but very acceptable. Diesel fueling is accomodated at your slip if needed and a good price for the VI.
The area around AYH is also very good for food, entertainment, marine supplies, provisioning, and repairs (Mi'kmaq Marine is very good). New marine chandlery on site and Budget Marine a few miles awar, many restaurants (try the Shwarma place), lots of bars with good food, excellent grocery store.
Our experience was very good and we look forward to our next visit.

Yes, the docks need to be rebuilt or resurfaced - a process that is underway. We can't address the previous reviews regarding the showers since we only use our onboard facilities.

What is important to us is the way we're treated! Everyone has been exceptionally accommodating. We arrived two hours early to drop off family heading to the airport. A spot was found for us to tie up waiting for our assigned slip to be vacated. Norman and other dock crew made certain we gently backed into our slip without incident. It's nice to feel welcome and greeted with a smile every time we meet on the dock!

Although fully booked, Jenny and Melissa allowed us to extend our stay an additional five days while awaiting generator parts. (It took a lot of effort to shuffle arriving boats into other slips.)

Although not Charlotte Amalie, Red Hook is a convenient location for provisioning, marine supplies, Sprint, Medical Clinic, restaurants... We will stay again.

MV Gotta Smile

Not nearly as nice as their advertising, 2014-01-07
Captain: , Eastport, MD (532)

Owned by IGY, same outfit that owns Yacht Haven Grande in Charlotte Amalie AYH is not at all in the same league. Fixed wood docks have needed replacement for years (i.e. wear shoes for sure). Service pillars are not bad, though our slip did not have 30 amp - had to dig out my splitter.

Our experience 4 years ago was their wifi was terrible. You know that when the office also gives you a sheet with wifi id's of surrounding restaurants it's not going to be good. We were a bit surprised that at least on the day we were there recenty it was working, even from on the boat (at the dock right in front of the office).

Showers are in the building next door, two of the four were out of service, and wiring was exposed in the switch box of the one I used. Walls are OK tile, but floors are some kind of texture that looks impossible to get really clean. Still, they were OK, with decent water flow that did get warm if you let it run long enough.

As marinas go it's not bad, just not nearly what we'd expected.

Antagonistic Staff, Run Down Docks, 2013-12-02
Captain: , Miami (10)

We came into Red Hook after a week enjoying the BVI to provision, do some repairs, and get set for a charter heading down island. American Yacht Harbor is too shallow to accommodate our yacht, so we had to anchor out and dinghy in - and this is where our problems began - we had a number interactions with AYH staff, none of them friendly, starting with them padlocking our dinghy during a brief run to a laundromat on an early Sunday morning and only after I mentioned that I had bolt cutters did they relent from their demand of $100 to unlock it, and merely charged us $20 for dockage for the morning for our 10' RIB - this for tying up next to other dinghies in a section of dock that was unlabelled. Unlike the IGY marina in Charlotte Amalie, where staff came out to help us tie up when we approached, at AYH the staff seemed genuinely antagonistic, unfriendly, and unhelpful. On top of this, the docks are run-down and falling apart, and after finding the designated "dinghy dock" section (buried in the back of the dock section) we found that it was inhabited with derelicts and was falling apart, with numerous protruding bolts and nails threatening our inflatable. I was very unimpressed, and would definitely not recommend doing business here.

You have to consider where you are, 2013-05-11

Not a bad area at all. Nice little pub at the top of the center building named "Island Time" with a great happy hour and good food. There is a nice little breakfast place on the second floor named "Latte's" with doughnuts, pastry, coffee & tea. A little Chandlery is in this group of buildings also. The grocery that was across the street has closed and supposedly has been bought and will re-open in a few months. Closest provisioning is a couple of miles down a road that you don't want to walk down due to traffic, so it's a cab ride. Grocery items here are very expensive ($6 for ritz crackers, $11 for a 6-pack of Corona).

Captain: , Bonita Springs, FL (221)

Yes the WIFI is inconsistant, although it works great at Molly's, but American always was and still is the best place on the east side of St. Thomas. Lots of bars, restaurants, ferry depot, bus, grocery, marine supply.. all right there or close by

OK, but . . ., 2011-02-25
Captain: , Chebeague Island (929)

I expected something like Village Cay in Road Town but was disappointed. We were given a slip that was really inadequate for our 60' (though maybe OK for a twin-screw sportfish), the head/shower rooms are few and marginal, and the Wi-fi didn't work.
If you stay here, make sure they understand your boat and its maneuvering requirements.

Steadily Improving, 2010-03-22
Captain: , Road Town (450)

We've had our boat here, on and off, since Dec 1/09. Never had a problem the friendly and efficient staff couldn't fix quickly.
Greatly enjoyed the in-slip fueling. AYH will negotiate price for larger quantities.

OK place, 2008-07-13
Captain: , Sarasota, Ft. Lauderdale (643)

Lots to do right at or near marina. Nice grocery store across the street. Good tackle shop on site. Didn't seem to unsafe to us and we stayed there on and off for several months.

Docks are a bit run down.

American Yacht Harbor Marina, 2008-05-11

Now an IGY marina, but docks are run down. High crime area, but lots of marina security. Close to restaurants and shops. Some noise and wakes from ferry boats. (5/08)
