Reviews for Alton Marina
Happy to be a return visitor, 2016-11-28
Captain: , warm waters (828)

We stayed here last year on our first Loop. This year's visit was shorter but no less pleasant and accommodating. Friendly service, easy entry, and Looper discount ($1 ft). We walked .5 mile to Gentilin's for a very nice dinner. As we were leaving we put on our matching, bright yellow raincoats. One of the servers asked, "Are you Loopers? Do you need a ride back to the marina?"; She then told us that the restaurant will come collect and return Loopers for dinner. We assured her that we would let our fellow boaters know via Active Captain.

Good Looper Stop, 2016-11-28
Captain: , St Louis (320)

The marina has most everything that you'll need or want. If you like to gamble the casino is within walking distance. Check to see if there are any concerts in the park, also within walking.
Shopping and St Louis will require a car to access, call Enterprise and they'll pick you up at the harbor and take you back to the marina when you're finished with your rental car.
If you're heading downstream call the lock before leaving the harbor to get a time frame was to when you'll be able to lock through. Better to kill time in the harbor than to do circles on the river.
Speaking of the lock, Mel Price has a great vistor center that's worth visiting.

One of the nicest marinas so far (north half of loop), 2016-10-19
Captain: , North East, MD (385)

We used the pay 3 free 3 plan for 15 days. Friendly helpful folks and beautiful facilities, including pool, hot tubs, and private bath/shower rooms. Everything at the marina floats and just about all the slips are covered. We were charged for two pumpouts since we have two tanks, which was a first in 3000 miles, but only $5 each. Schwegel's grocery store will pick you up (as will Enterprise).

great stop!, 2016-09-27
Captain: , Fort Myers (700)

took advantage of the 6 nights for 3, and the covered slips protected us from the heat. pool was sweet. enterprise had a weekend special for 10 bucks per day with harbor frieght, lowes, target, aldes and kmart near enterprise office. Downtown Alton is really nice. Irish bar had lousy food. great staff at the marina with decent diesel price of $2.3x. casino has shuttle pickup, and rumor is that Macs will golf cart you to their otb

Loved our stay, 2016-09-13
Captain: , Punta Gorda, FL (2870)

We had a great time here for 3 days while we rented a car (Enterprise picks you up) to take day trips into Saint Louis. The marina pool and 2 hot tubs were great. There is a sign saying the pool and spas close at 3am - have fun. Gotta love it.

The staff was wonderful and the price for Loopers is fantastic.

Couple of Issues, 2016-09-04
Captain: , Chicago (125)

Hit something submerged directly between the fuel dock and J dock. In the main channel and well away from the bridge. We draw 4'10" so be careful if you draw anything close.

Power off the 250/50 pedestals is below 192v'

Great place, friendly harbormaster, 2016-09-04
Captain: , Cape Coral (221)

Perfect marina, clean, new and under cover with cheap diesel. Greg the harbormaster Even gäbe us his Car (a Cadillac) to drive to Hoppie's!

Absolutely Superior Marina, 2016-08-06
Captain: , Portland, Oregon (576)

This is by far the best marina we have ever stayed in and to get all of the amenities at the low cost is fantastic. If we weren't "looping" we would stay here a lot longer.

One of the best places in the mid-west, 2016-02-16
Captain: , Saint Charles (669)

Because of the staff we now call the Alton marina home. Come stay here for the top notch showers, slips, pool hot tub, food, security or the nearby amenities like a band shelter or gambling boat. But the staff will take care of you like you%u2019re a VIP and you will return just to see them again. We have traveled the mid-west river system and the great lakes for 30 years and for the last 20 this has been one of the best places to stay. If we could get more marinas to take this type of pride in the facility and customers our boating numbers will start growing again.

Can't say enough Good..., 2015-10-23
Captain: , Seattle, WA (40)

We left our boat here for a month in the care of Marina Manager Greg and his able crew who checked on her regularly while we were away on the west coast. Can't say enough good things about this marina... best in class anywhere on our 9,000 great loop journey so far - one of the few shower facilities I rank over our on-board shower and that I actually looked forward to going to every day we were in the Marina (they even have body lotion and the 'smell good stuff' in the shower rooms... ) !! Our bow thruster went broke at the fuel dock and Greg was a great help in finding local advice on repair help.

Great Marina!, 2015-10-18
Captain: , Bayou Bonfouca, LA- Great Loop Cruiser (708)

We loved this stop. The facilities at this marina are top notch. Hot tubs, swimming pool, clean bathhouse, laundry for $1.00/load.
We stayed 12 days with the buy 3 get 3 looper deal.

This marina is welcoming and full featured, 2015-10-10
Captain: , Beaver Island, MI (291)

We are here now on Oct.10, 2015. Manager helped with docking and showed us around. As other reviews have mentioned the showers/toilets are fantastic, best anywhere!. There is a pool and town is an easy walk
Entrance is very easy. If southbound come under Cass St bridge (can't miss this beautiful bridge), do a 180 on the left descending side and go in in! Great depths even at low water.. Looper discounts and you can stay 6 nights if you buy 3, ie 3 free nights!

great marina, so-so town, 2015-10-02
Captain: , Wilmington, DE (780)

This marina is excellent, well maintained and professionally run. No depth problems. The great dockhands and office staff were friendly, very customer oriented and helpful. Bathrooms were exceptional, tho wifi was iffy on the t docks. It's next to a large bridge and so a bit noisy at times, but we weren't bothered by it. The town of Alton was just ok, but I wouldn't walk at night to or from the marina. Taxis are available.

Fantastic stop, 2015-09-28
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

Stayed here the night of 9/26/15. Pool, hot tub, covered slip, easy walk into town to watch football at sports bar (would have given 6 stars if my team had won).

One of the very best anywhere, 2015-09-25
Captain: , Chattanooga, TN (370)

I agree with a previous reviewer who said these were the nicest bathrooms on the Great Loop. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the nearby town has everything you might need including a good Enterprise Car Rental (we did not try to get them to pick us up). Very convenient to Stl Louis, St. Charles and metro area. Good restaurants are Gentelin's, Tony's, and Bluff City Grill. My only complaint was the scarcity of 50Amp service; we had to move to a slip that was covered but not tall enough for our boat, so we stuck out a good bit. Marina was being dredged during our stay. If you stay 3 nights, you get 3 more nights free- a great incentive to see lots of St. Louis.

Great place Highly recommend, 2015-09-19
Captain: , Deltaville, VA (80)

We have been here three days and find the people here to be outstanding as well as the facilities. Would highly recommend as it has been extremely convenient to for us to visit St Charles, St Louis and Alton as well. There is a great little downtown area here in Alton with good restaurants and nightlife that is about a 1/4 mile walk which is well hidden from view in the marina.

We will be stopping here again., 2015-09-14
Captain: , Illinois (2471)

Enjoyed a great stay here again. Barb worked the docks and assisted boaters in so many ways. Outstanding help.
The bathrooms and showers were cleaned after every use. Very, very nice and so clean.
We did experience poor service from Enterprise car rental. They advised and promised a certain pick up time then were 45 minutes late even after calling them three times to see if we were forgotten. Barb even found more rental places for us much more interested in properly treating their customers.

First the good stuff. We stayed here 3 days the first part of September. The showers were very clean and well appointed with soaps and shampoo's, etc. Clean shower mats were provided for each user.
The slips were covered and clean. No issues with power pedistals at all.
The staff was helpful and friendly.
The pool area was appealing and clean. It made us feel as if we were at a nice resort.
A great place to eat is Fast Eddies. Anybody can tell you how to get there.
The only down side is the road noise from the bridge. Not much can be down about that. There was a party that was too loud on an adjacent dock but they did stop at midnight sharp. That kept us from complaining to staff. We were just glad it did stop. A 11pm shutdown would have been better. If it weren't for the the road noise and party, another star would have been given.

We have a winner!, 2015-08-30
Captain: , Iuka, MS (1130)

Superb facility with all the amenities, plus recently dredged harbor. Also, after a 3-year search for the best restroom/shower on the Great Loop, we are declaring Alton Marina champs. It had been a 3-way tie between Marina Jack (Sarasota), St John's Yacht (near Charleston), and South Jersey (Cape May), but Alton takes the crown with individual shower/baths, full amenities including towels, and cleanings between each use by marina staff. Oh, no long walk either.

On a more navigationally important note, we also saw 9' throughout the marina basin at Summer pool conditions in late August. This compares to the unusable so-called 5-star marina 14 miles upriver that has 3 to 4 foot depths except for 7' at the fuel dock and entrance.

Wonderful Experience, 2015-02-20
Captain: , Summerlin, NV (350)

We stopped here while trailering our 23' boat westward. Nice launch ramp, and very accommodating beautiful marina. Warm friendly staff, ready to help as needed. Nice grounds, beautiful pool for those hot days. While cruising the rive several miles north of there we had our first interaction with 100s of Asian Carp that suddenly started jumping (flying) out of shallow water. Fascinating to see but drives home the need for all of us to do our part in trying to control invasive species.

Check the water level if river is on a quick rise, 2014-10-21
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (778)

Its prudent to call Alton Marina ahead of time and ask their water level. The river state gauges to not really reflect what is happening in this area of the river due to something we term the "Bathtub Effect". Essentially, if you look down a bathtub drain you'll see there is hardly anwer water just above the drain. Exactly what happens here whenever their is a dramatic rise in the river above the dam.

BTW, this is a very nice marina, so, do not be discouraged by this occassional phenomenon, but, do be aware it does occur.

Hand to Cancel Reservation Low Water, 2014-10-20
Captain: , Green Cove Springs FL (1394)

We had a reservation for 10-16-14 with plans for an early start the next day into Mel Price Lock and then on to Hoppies. Called Alton an hour out having departed Grafton Marina. Alton had us talk their Harbor Master Greg Brown who advised us honestly and with concern that because Mel Price Lock had pulled the plug and had taken the Alton Marina Water level to a 5 ft in the marina and approach that we might get stuck. Not wanting to get aground or risk Alton loosing more water we returned to Grafton Harbor Marina. It was 2:30 PM and there would not have been enough time to make Hoppies. Thanks Greg for your Honest assesment and concern. We continue to hold tight in Grafton 10-17-14 for a report from Fern at Hoppies on River conditions at her location. Hoppies can be found at Active Captain location Imperial, MO. Capt Helen and Chief Engr Bob onboard

clean and friendly, 2014-10-08
Captain: , Detroit (30)

Great place to stop along the Mississippi River.

Nice Facilities but Allowed Loud Parties, 2014-09-30
Captain: , Everett, Washington (824)

We stayed for two days in late September. On a Saturday night, the quiet hour starts at midnight which is later than every marina we had been. There was a loud party and it was so loud-it was way over the top-with music heard very clearly 75 yards away and in a sealed up boat and went on past midnight. The night security staff was invisible. The event was reported to the Harbormaster by leaving a message on his phone, and the call was returned the next day. The management staff, the manager, the harbormaster, the office adminstrator were all very apologetic, the moorage was refunded, and action was vowed. They are working hard to attract loopers. Genuine apologies aside, a marina local said the small group of problem people on I-Dock is a chronic issue and the police had been called. Allton is a beautiful marina, well maintained and nice staff. However, the loud music and party atmosphere and the invisible night staff is a problem that needs to be addressed. In over 100 marinas on this trip, this was a first, and it was all preventable.

Lovely, but a little noisy, 2014-09-29
Captain: , Penetanguishene, ON (162)

This is a lovely marina with lots of nice bike trails around. The pool and hot tub(s) are awesome! The only problem is that it is a little noisy (right under a bridge) and there is no grocery shopping nearby. The good news is that the local store will come down and pick you up and drive you back to the marina. Wonderful, pleasant service and a great little family run store!

Five Days at Alton Marina, 2014-09-25
Captain: , little current (272)

The Marina is well run and maintained. Facilities are all in good shape and attractive. There is even a farmers market in an adjacent parking lot on Wednesdays (4 to 7) and on Saturdays
Management even came out to our slip to check on us to see how things were going.

Great marina with excellent total facilities and services, 2014-07-29
Captain: , Moyock, NC (1054)

Everything is on floating docks including boat slips, docks, covered roof, office, facilities, and swimming pool. It is built to fluctuate up to 30%u2019 when the Mississippi rises and falls . . . amazing place. It is the nicest cleanest most accommodating marina we%u2019ve seen and is inexpensive. The new suspension bridge adjacent to the marina and the lock in the distance is invitingly scenic. The small marina deli has ice cream and will serve meals to the boats upon request. The grocery store six blocks away will send a car for transportation, and the marine store / auto suppliers (O'Reily's / NAPA) will deliver to the marina. You can't beat the cleanliness, beauty, services, and people.

Our Favorite Marina!, 2013-12-16
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (165)

Other than the clean atmosphere and being within walkind distance to just about everything, the staff were awesome! It was obvious that the staff enjoyed their jobs and they treated us very well. We visited off season and it was very quiet. You have to check up Fast Eddies and Chubby's if you stop here. Both are a safe walking distance away.

Alton Marina - First Class, 2013-11-20
Captain: , Maryland Heights, MO (314)

This is our favorite marina - a first class operation without pretension. The restrooms are like those in a high-end country club, and the quality of service is without peer.

Good Stop to Tour St Louis, 2013-10-14
Captain: , MV Red Head (3106)

We were at Alton Marina on our anniversary and decided to celebrate by spending the day in St Louis. Enterprise picked us up for our rental car. We went to the top of the arch, had a nice meal, and were tourists for a day. Alton Marina was a great place to be for a few days. The marina is top notch with lovely docks, a pool, and nice facilities. I loved the splashes of color that manager Karen scatters throughout.

The staff is first rate and makes you feel very welcome. Don't hesitant to ask for anything you need. The town of Alton has some nice restaurants and shops and is worth taking a stroll.

There's a nice park right next door where we walked the dogs. Early in the morning we took them off leash for fetch with the stick. It was a great stop for the whole crew!

Best on The Loop, 2013-09-22
Captain: , Oriental, NC (80)

This is the best marina I've stayed in so far on The Loop. I concur with previous reviews. A lady with style runs it. She and her staff make sure everything is just right. Also got a good wax job by Akeem's Marine. He does a quality job at a reasonable rate.

Well worth a stop, 2013-09-20
Captain: , Chattanooga, TN (554)

Great marina with floating docks, pool, spas, fantastic showers with shampoo, conditioner and soap furnished, and deli-snack bar in the ships store. A shuttle takes you to the grocery store. Laundry is only $1/load. Lots of antique stores on Alton's main street.

No problems with depths in mid-September. The office said that the marina area was at normal pool, which is 10'.

Fabulous Marina - Stop Here, 2013-09-16
Captain: , Burnt Store Marina (70)

Covered slips, pool, floating docks, fuel and dockage discount for Boat US members, terrific harbor hosts (Patty & Robert Mitchell) - Robert gives a briefing every night at 5:30 for AGLCA loopers (and probably anyone else) who are continuing down the river - extremely helpful.

Excellent, safe harborage, 2013-04-26
Captain: , Louisville KY (408)

Off the channel and in sight of the beautiful bridge. All the creature features and courtesy shuttles

First Rate Marina, 2012-10-29
Captain: , Detroit (767)

This is a very well run marina. Staff is very helpful. Found out that you can take the casino shuttle back and forth and it cuts half the waking distance to town. Talk to the office staff about this and they will call. Had a great dinner at Gentelin's. Although we were on the end of the T-dock really like the covered wells.

Top Notch Marina, 2012-10-01
Captain: , Colorado Springs CO (180)

Clean facilities, floating docks, plenty of water in a low water year, friendly staff and harbor hosts. Pool and hot tub available. Bit of a walk to town. Looper fee = $1.00/foot

Great marina!, 2012-09-26
Captain: , Spring Lake, MI (379)

I agree with the many positive posts below. Robert and Patty Mitchell, the AGLCA harbor hosts, greeted us and took us to lunch at a State Street Market. They gave us a driving tour of Alton and even dropped one boater off at the train station. Terrific people.

A haven during rthe recent Chain of Rocks Lock closure, 2012-09-26
Captain: , Portland (140)

We were greeted with genuinely friendly staff and found facilities to be fantastic. Individual shower/rest rooms were supplied with freshly laundered bath mats as well as anything one would need to feel pampered (shampoo, conditioner, body soap, lotion, deodorant, hair dryers). Laundry facillities were reasonable. Everything was immaculately clean! Some unusual "walk-to" destinations . . . i.e. a casino, the Great Rivers Museum at the lock site, an office supply store, and more usual fare such as Subway and McDonalds. Mac's (not to be confused with McDonalds) is a local favorite, reasonably priced restaurant.

Great Stop, 2012-08-19
Captain: , punta gorda, fl (1448)

One of the nicest marinas we have seen. Very nice covered floating docks. Nice pool. Good restroom/showers. Good protection from current and wakes. Several restaurants within walking distance.

four and half star stop Great Stop Boat US Discount, 2011-10-14
Captain: , Gulf Breeze, Fl (6909)

Very protected with nice floating docks and silps under cover. Bathrooms are private with shower and fresh bathmats, hair dryers, toiletries, trash pickup at the slip ... this would be a full 5 stars if they had a courtsey vehicle. The nicest I've seen at any public/private marina. All this at $1.00 with Boat US Discount.

All the necessities, 2011-10-04
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7374)

Docks in great shape, pool, hot tub. Marina was a little under-staffed the afternoon we arrived, everyone working the fuel dock, no one in office or on docks. Local grocery store will pick you up and drive you back. Local shops a little far.

Outstanding Marina, 2011-09-22
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (4257)

Great marina with new, clean, secure facilities. With BoatUS or AGLCA discount, transient rate is $1/foot - a great deal. A must stop.

Clean restroom and showers, 2011-09-21
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

Yes, this marina has the fuel, pumpout, etc. But the restrooms/showers are the nicest I have seen. Attention to detail by the staff here is impressive. Great stop.

And if you are a BoatUS member, it is cheaper! by 30 cents a foot!
And the town is a real town, local grocery will send a van to pick you up and bring you back...this is the place to stay--we stayed both...

Best on the Mid Mississippi, 2010-07-21
Captain: , Absarokee Mt (1228)

This is our home marina for the next 9 months. Has a Deli, washer/dryers, clean showers, ships store and knowledgable staff. Not close to stores, but taxi is available. Is dredging the entire marina, this should be finished by md Aug. I show 10 feet in the marina but a bit shallower on entrance, about 7 feet. I enter about 100 yards downstream from the rip rap and hold to the west side of the entry channel, be aware of the dredge pipe markers (old fenders)

Top of the line, you'd think you were in Florida

Alton Marina, 2007-06-19
Captain: , St. Louis Mo (328)

This is a first class "city" marina. Full transient services based at the foot of the City of Alton Illinois. There is a Casino and many resteraunts and bars within walking distance. Taxi service is available and it is a short 20-30 minute trip to Downtown St. Louis. This marina is located on the Illinois shore under the Clark Bridge. The marina has gated access to both the parking lots and the docks to make for a secure stay. The staff is alway friendly and outgoing. There is ships store that is always well stocked and plenty of local knowledge is always at hand.
