Reviews for Alligator River Marina
Nice Stop for 1 night, 2017-08-21
Captain: , Honolulu (490)

S/V Delphinia 6'6" draft

Stopped for the night. Nice stop good food. A bit shallow in the morning when we left 6'8" but we did fine mid channel. Would stop again.

New owners are great, 2017-06-19
Captain: , Falmouth, Maine (176)

We have great internet and we are able to see video. We almost never get that in a marina. Great docks - Dockmaster is most helpful.
No wind or current problems once you get inside the breakwater.
Bathrooms are clean and repairs are being made.

Great Stop & Super People, 2017-06-11
Captain: , Venice, FL (170)

Jim & Karen on the Karen M.
After a rough day in Albemarle Sound, the Alligator bridge would not open due to wind. The Alligator River Marina took us in, showed us super hospitality and the Philly sandwich is the best I've had. The new owners are wonderful folks. Docks are relatively new and heads with showers (4) are clean and roomy.

The Change of Ownership is Happening!, 2017-05-29
Captain: , Oriental, NC (190)

05/16/17 The dockmaster was great. The ladies in the store were great. The docks were in good condition but the pump out was not operable. The restrooms were tired and need updating. No paper towels and the showers were terrible. Did not meet the new owner who takes over the end of this week but have been told changes will be taking place. If you plan on being out at night bring some bug spray. 05/28/17 update. Stayed there again on our way back to Oriental. It has changed hands but otherwise little appears to have changed except the grass is taller. There was a different dockmaster. Internet did not work this time and the showers were in the same condition. I was assured the new owner would make significant improvements including a full service restaurant..

Very Nice Marina, 2017-05-29
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (160)

Our second stop here. Dockhand will meet you and help getting in and out of the slip. Very pleasant owners on site. Restaurant was not open but you can get sandwiches, burgers, breakfast at the store. Very clean laundry, baths, and clubhouse.

Nice well sheltered stop on Alligator River, 2017-05-20
Captain: , Marion Ma (641)

Everything was functioning fine when we stopped for overnight dockage last night. Closing is next week. New owner operates marina in Manteo. So all should be fine.

Full service place to stop, 2017-05-15
Captain: , Rock Hall, MD (559)

Stopped here for the 3rd time on 11/6 for 2 nights. The fried chicken was excellent as usual. The marina facilities are clean and well maintained. The internet service was intermittent and cellular service on AT&T was ocassionally spotty. Gas and diesel available at the fuel dock and there are several pumpout locations along the south wall. Overall a good place to stop for food, fuel or to wait out the weather.

5/15/17. Spent last night here. Came in in strong northerly winds (25 kts). Dockhand had no radio so communication with him was impossible. Had to come bow in. The fingers are short so I had to drop my lifelines to get the dog off the boat. As for dogs they are welcome; the signs are for people coming in from the highway and letting their dogs run all over the place. Next time I'll tie up on the bulkhead so I can get off the boat thru my gates.

Alligator River Marina, 2017-05-14
Captain: , Harrison Township Michigan (380)

Spent a quiet night here. Not a town. In the middle of nowhere. Did have a small store on property. Don't know what in store for this place. New owners take over tomorrow. Wanda sold it at auction

Nice quiet marina after road traffic died down, helpful dock hand, 2017-05-12
Captain: , Dunedin, FL (7375)

Review from May 2017: previous review still applies. As of May 2017 Ms. Wanda has sold the business, but was still working on site.

Review from October 2015: Easy channel into marina from ICW, easy to turn around inside marina. Dock pilings in good condition, dock hand very helpful taking our lines. Restrooms/showers clean.

Great price for diesel, 2017-05-06
Captain: , Cataumet, MA (30)

We stopped for fuel...10% off on an already low price when you buy 200+ gallons. We might have stayed the night but the place is covered with "No Dogs" signs. Not friendly.

Hospitality plus, 2017-04-25
Captain: , Hickory, NC (61)

Ms. Wanda is a gracious hostess and she will be sorely missed walking the docks and visiting with cruisers. She is an able manager and has invested 40 years of her life into maintaining a really nice ICW stop in an otherwise unserved area. Bath/showers clean and well kept. Docks in excellent shape. Never got around to the fried chicken but sausage biscuits were excellent. It blew hard (14-22 knots) for several days and we were provided good protection from weather inside marina harbor. Hopefully the next owners will continue Ms. Wanda's great traditions of good management, clean and well kept facilities and gracious hospitality.

New Owners are getting a Gem, 2017-04-20
Captain: , Little River SC (586)

If I was in the market for a marina this is one I would have scarfed up. Marina was sold at auction April 4th. Miss Wanda was still there when we arrived but was tight lipped about the new owners. I know she will be missed. Great facilities, bath house and captains lounge, store, fuel and pumpout. Wifi was a bit weak. Hope the new owners continue with the service.

Miss Wanda Retiring???, 2017-04-17
Captain: , Annapolis MD (150)

We stayed here in early April and saw a big sign that the complex was up for auction. Miss Wanda was still there to greet us upon arrival, but the gas station/store closed at 2pm (off season?) We had no less than 6 1/2 ft on the way in, with the shallowest reading right at the outer end of the jetties.

Hummingbird Heaven!, 2017-03-26
Captain: , Fort Myers Beach, FL (110)

I agree with all of the great comments about Miss Wanda, Logan and the staff, but the hummingbirds were icing on the cake!
We've stopped here twice now, so I guess we are now regulars. We won't ever skip by here, it's definitely a great marina!

Kind, clean and sheltered stay, 2017-03-11
Captain: , NewBern NC (30)

Read below posts too. Owner was very accommodating on zero notice after a terrifying crossing despite being closed off season. Nice clean showers and a living room for the family. Store opens mid march. Thank you

Nice place to rest after a rough crossing!, 2017-02-15
Captain: , Fair Haven, NY (100)

Even though the marina was closed for the season, the owner was very accommodating to us and another boat. very clean and well kept marina. The store attached to the gas station was closed due to it being off season. The owner did heat up the lounge and the laundry/restroom area for us which was very nice. The bathrooms were clean, but will need a little updating at some point. Nice place though.

Nice Marina Good Chicken, 2016-12-31
Captain: , Cape May, NJ (340)

Stopped on our way down south. Today (12/10/2016) is the last day the Marina will be open for the season. Helpful dockhand and well maintained Marina. Shell gas station/grocery store/ takeout kitchen had the best fried chicken. Two pieces of chicken with two sides $10. We will stop here again on our return trip

Always a nice stop, 2016-12-09
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (385)

We have been stopping here for several years. Miss Wanda and Logan run a nice place. This time (3/21/16) we are a bit early - the restaurant and shop doesn't open until the end of this week. But Miss Wanda found some things for us (chocolate ice cream in the back freezer). Nice showers and lounge. Wifi works well at our spot near the fuel pumps. It was a little shallow at low tide 5.3ft. We were told that the basin is getting dredged next week in prep for the upcoming season. This is a good stop between Belhaven and Coinjock or Elisabeth City.

Great Fried Chicken, 2016-11-12
Captain: , Bear, DE (560)

A well-run operation despite being short on staff. Logan efficiently got us refueled and onto our spot on the facing dock for the evening. Easy in and out with a well-marked channel paralleling the bridge.

Two washers and two dryers ($1.00 to wash $1.50 to dry). Captain%u2019s lounge was comfortable with a large screen TV. Wifi reception was good. Docks were in good condition. Charge for slips is less than for the facing dock. Boat US discount for dockage but not fuel. No haulout or yard services on site.

Clean showers but water was well water which has a different smell to it than chemically treated city water. Not a problem for us. It is clean water. You may not want to add it to your boat water tanks if you want to avoid the well water smell.

Convenience store had the basics plus premium ice cream. The fried chicken lives up to its reputation. Crisp, moist and not real greasy. Chicken dinner was $10 (two pieces of chicken plus two sides).

We will stop again on our way north next spring. A great place to refuel, shower, laundry and relax for a few hours while traveling the ICW.

Nice stop in the middle of nowhere, 2016-11-04
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (310)

Nice stop with good docking. Ms Wanda runs the place and is awesome. She even drove us to Nags Head for an emergent part. The food in the restaurant was good and the prices were great. Water is from the well so it has that taste even my filters couldn't improve.

Nice rest stop, 2016-10-22
Captain: , Egg Harbor Wi (70)

This is a great spot to stop. Half wway between Belhaven and Coinjock or Elizabeth City. The harbor was dredged last April and now has 8 feet of depth. The only shallow spot was 7 feet crossing the silt bar at the entrance.

Disappointed, 2016-10-19
Captain: , Noank, Ct (20)

Arrived hoping to get fuel, water and a Pumpout. There was no Pumpout and the only water that was available was in the slips, but there were no hoses to use. The staff was friendly enough and helpful with docking. There were no boats in the slips at 1pm. We opted to move on

Great Marina, 2016-10-19
Captain: , Gulf Harbor (10)

Everything you need for a quick nights stop over N or S bound. Great fuel prices.

Open after Matthew with fuel and fried chicken, 2016-10-14
Captain: , Hollywood, MD (142)

The marina is open for business after the hurricane and is still serving it's famous fried chicken. Good WIFI.

Easy in and out, 2016-09-12
Captain: , Sanford, Fl. (887)

This is a really great stop. We stopped here going north and south. The marina is really pretty well sheltered. They have a small store with quite a few things that a cruising boat may need, plus they prepare quite a lot of food. Fuel prices were very reasonable. Ms Wanda is a great hostess. The number of Humming Birds that make there home there is unbelievable.

A Good One Night Place, 2016-08-15
Captain: , Forest Lake, MN (80)

Planned to stay one night, ended up staying another due to issues with generator. Able to get help with generator so we could leave after second night. Great WiFi

A nice place to stop for the night., 2016-07-29
Captain: , Wickford, RI (456)

This is a great place to stop, it has a diner and small convenients store complete with Ice Cream. It has fix piers with no bolts or nails, no fenders are needed. There's not much around but it has good wifi. Logan the dock master is very nice and knows how to handle lines. Stay in the center of the channel, it's shallow, but once in there's plenty of water.

I just like this marina. Logan is very nice and knows how to assist in getting you docked, the food is great at the little resturant. The price is right. Due to the weather the marina was full, which put a strain on the WiFi system, but all in all a very nice stop while heading north and south. See you in the fall.

Great Stop Over, Wonderful Help, 2016-07-29
Captain: , Confetti, Kadey Krogen (1699)

We stopped on a windy day and Logan was fantastic in helping us dock. The facility was very clean. A few washers and dryers, both inexpensive. We walked over to the gas station and ordered dinner of chicken and two sides. Annette was great and had our dinner ready to pick up at 6:00. You have to place your dinner order before 6 pm. Food was very good. Overall a great stopover. Also we were headed south bound so we called the bridge before untying and when we got to the bridge it was open d for us.

Great Stop still, 7/2016, 2016-07-18
Captain: , North Myrtle Beach, SC (3210)

Love eating here and stopping. Had frest cut beans, potatoes, cole slaw, and stewed corn. Yum. Best fried chicken you'll ever eat. We got a to go box full for the next day. Nice faclilties for showers, lounge, and laundry. Now a little pricy for the fact dock, but if you have troble getting on/off your boat due to physical issues, then ask for it. The other piers are generally just fine.

2nd time in a week, 2016-07-17
Captain: , Wrightsville Beach, nc (20)

Stopped here on the way to do Albemarle sound loop and again when heading home. Simple but nice and you can get sandwich or good chicken in the store.

Great place to stop, 2016-07-12
Captain: , Marblehead, OH (296)

Wanda and all the people that work here are great. Service was great as well as the food.

A good place to stop., 2016-07-04
Captain: , Sunset Beach, NC (1146)

I asked for fried chicken and 20 minutes later we had piping hot chicken. Gas station chicken is the best. A good stop for us at 6 hours from Belhaven. Price is right and BoatUS discount as well.

A Gem of a Marina, 2016-06-25
Captain: , New Buffalo, Michigan (780)

Great place to stay. All that Mark says in his previous review is right on. Had small parts sent there and Ms. Wanda drove into town to pick them up for us. She and her son Logan run a great operation. Food was good at the restaurant. Fried chicken tasty and breakfast sandwiches were excellant. Very sercure and great cheap diesel fuel. Went thru a very stormy night and all was peaceful and calm in the marina.

Humming bird heaven, 2016-06-16
Captain: , Savannah, GA (330)

Do your laundry while sitting on the porch watching the Humming Birds gather around the feaders. Stopped here last year while delivering a 50 Carver to the Chesapeake. Came back this year in our 46' M/Y. Great stop over when Albemarle Sound is kicking up heading North. Logan is shot on with tie-ups. Yep, the building is a Shell service station with lots off outer bank wearing apparel. Fast food serves up front with a small resturant in the back. Get there early, they close at seven, must be there before 6 p.m. Great shrimp and chicken. Miss Wanda, the owner is a coot! Easy end in out. A boaters dream.

Great Stop for Fuel and Food, 2016-06-11
Captain: , Stuart, FL (165)

Ms. Wanda and staff are helpful and courteous. Fried chicken is a must. Stayed one night. Will be back again.

Alligator R. Marina remains a very nice stop, 2016-06-02
Captain: , annapolis (453)

All services previously listed still available. Breakfast hrs are 0600 not 0500 as with my previous post.

Nice stop, very close to ICW, with everything to keep you moving - fuel, laundry, showers, wifi, restaurant and mini mart w/icecream.

Ms Wanda and associates are helpful and friendly.

Planning an early start and don't want to fuss with breakfast dishes, eat at the restaurant (open at 5am) or get it to go.

Great Stop, 2016-05-13
Captain: , Harrington Harbour South (95)

Earlier postings rated the marina only up to 4 1/2 feet of draft. Dredging is complete and no problem with approach. Fuel dock is the best location for transients and can accomodate four or five large boats. Well protected. All facilities are clean and functional. Miss Wanda will take your order when you arrive and have food waiting even after closing.

Good stop for getting off of open water, 2016-05-13
Captain: , Grand Rivers, Ky (2206)

5-11-16 Stayed one night, staff very helpful, did not eat at restaurant but other boater here very pleased with their meal.

7.6 ft at the entrance today, 2016-05-09
Captain: , Poughkeepsie, NY (6077)

Good fuel stop with a very protected harbor. We chose the face dock for ease of getting on and off the boat. The pilings now have rubber bumpers, much appreciated since they cover some exposed bolt heads. We've always had expert help in docking here.

Good WiFi and great ice cream with generous helpings.

Good place to stage crossing Albemarle Sound, 2016-05-08
Captain: , Fernandina, FL (448)

After a bumpy afternoon on the Alligator River the marina was almost dead calm and Logan was a big help with the lines. Very short finger piers in slips and a few side-tie spots.

Basic, Well-Protected Marina, 2016-04-28
Captain: , Hobe Sound, Florida (480)

This is a good spot to duck into after a nasty crossing of Albemarle Sound southbound, or to leave from going north. There are clean facilities in a separate building that also includes a pretty basic boaters' lounge, friendly and helpful staff (Logan), a strong WiFi signal at the dock, and plenty of open space to walk your dog. But that's about it, and trying to figure out where to dispose of the trash is a challenge.

This is a little gem!, 2016-04-27
Captain: , Britt, Ontario (711)

04-26-16 They were dredging as we entered so should be good now. Great help to tie up and friendly helpful service from Logan and Miss Wanda. 04-27-16 Still touched mud on the way out with 5'5" draft. Dredge is still here.

Convenient and Protected , 2016-04-08

Perfect place to duck into when strong winds prevent you from crossing Albemarle Sound. We had originally planned this stop, but with high winds and gusts 40+ we stayed a second day. Logan was ready and waiting to get us tied up -- great at getting us situated so we could leave with bow out. Miss Wanda, owner, came by to welcome us and chat. Friendly, nice place with lots of slips available. Would definitely come back.

easy on and off the ICW, safe but not exciting, 2016-04-06
Captain: , South Portland, Maine (847)

the dock staff here was really great assisting tying up in a strong wind. The shoreside amenties are minimal, alyhough very attractive and well kept, restrooms very clean and lots of good hot water, laundry on site too, the food choices at the "grocery" are more akin to a gas station convienience store but they do have a grill and a a fryer for a hot meal ashore and they have a reputation for excellent burgers. The entrance has one small hump of 5 feet to transit but good water insiide and approaching the entrance. The plan is to have this dredged along with the slips soon. Fuel is available but the pump out was out of service when we were 3/30. A supermarket for provisioning is 12 miles away. The facility is fine (thus 4 stars) but there is nothing else around for boaters ( a 2-3 star).

A great place to wait on weather crossing the Albemarle. The staff could not have been nicer.

Some of the friendliest staff on the ICW, 2016-03-20
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (70)

Still closed for the season in March, and docks were still winterized. Very friendly and helpful. Would love to stop there when the season opens there. Quiet marina, well protected, lots of slips with new docks.

Off Season Stopover, 2016-01-14
Captain: , Colorado (411)

Got a late start heading south this year and stopped at marina on 1/14/16. Easy access and protected fixed face dock that could accomodate our catamaran. Saw depths of at least 6 feet at entrance. Convenience store is closed for the season (like much we have encountered on this trip...can't blame them, we haven't seen another cruising boat on the trip). Ms. Wanda met us at the dock and helped tie up. Very nice and accomodating. Marina has clean bath house and boaters lounge with TV that seems to be open 24/7. Dogs enjoyed the play area back behind the Shell station. Good stop even though it is the only game in the area.

Forgot to mention, they have good WiFi too. Particularly useful since neither of our phones (Sprint & TMobile networks) had service.

06/11/2015, 9/29/2015, and 12/20/15 stops - Late on the rating, 2016-01-10
Captain: , Wilmington NC (400)

- Sorry to be so late on the rating. Stopped for the night prior to tackling the Albemarle Sound. 3 boats kept going, 2 came back because it was so rough. The channel follows the bridge into marina and getts quite choppy on the beam. Marina is well protected in the basin. Logan, who appears to be the man who does everything on the dock was very helpful and friendly. Got the boat tied up safe in some nasty cross winds. Food is great at the station (got to order by 6pm). Owner is very friendly, restrooms were very clean, docks in great shape, great stopover.........and my dog and I got along fine....we walked west of the store. I would say the signs on site are due to people not cleaning up after their pets.
Stopped again on 9/30/2015 heading south and watching Joaquin. Good stop as usual. You can not stay here in a named storm. They ask everyone to leave.
12/20/15 Last stop of the season. Marina and store closed for the holidays. Ms Wanda was very nice as always and met to at the dock to tie up, fuel, and check in in for the night. Will always make this a stop when crossing this area.

Clear star filled views, 2015-12-17
Captain: , Charleston south carolina (90)

After pushing hard for 4 days we stopped early and actually enjoyed the place during daylight, I would stop again, the night sky was full of stars with out too much light interfering. would stop again, friendly marina and clean showers.

Good stop at the mouth of the alligator., 2015-12-06
Captain: , Norfolk, Va (195)

Glenn was very helpful getting diesel at $2.19. Had lunch at the dinner. Great hamburger. Not much in the way of groceries. The marina is behind a gas station so it is more of a quick stop. Green markers from the ICW close to the bridge. 10-14 ft depth until we got just inside the jetty. Just as I cut the throttle to coast to the fuel dock we came to a stop. Was able to wiggle and plow thru maybe 10 foot long hump. We have a 43 ft gulfstar with 5 ft draft. If I had keppt the throttle up we might have made it. Favor the red at the entrance. Well water has a mineral taste.

Nicely kept, easy side-tie, with convenience store & grille, 2015-11-15
Captain: , Moyock, NC (1084)

The dock master is friendly and helpful. The facilities are nice and clean surrounded by mowed lawn surrounding the docking slips and side-tie walls. A lot of thought and planning was incorporated into this marina to make it very functional, along the mouth of the Alligator River. There's nothing else close but it's a nice stop.

Best Option Around, 2015-11-03
Captain: , Hilton Head, SC (1234)

Easy on / off face dock for us. No water, but we didn't need it. Coming in, we didn't touch bottom, we draw 6 ft. Going out the next morning, we did have to "furrow" out seeing 5.5ft

Did not have a chance to try the restaurant there. The dock manager Logan was very helpful. Facilities were clean.

Would stop there again. But watch your draft.

A great stop!, 2015-10-30
Captain: , Michigan City, IN, USA (290)

We called ahead for a slip and were told to enter at our own risk, Wanda advised there's shoaling at the entrance - we came anyway and never saw less than 7 feet at the marina entrance. Dock hand was right there to help us tie up. Very clean and nice bathrooms and laundry, fast wifi. The marina office is actually the gas station/convenience store - the convenience store is well stocked and also has a dining area with a nice menu - not just fried food. We had dinner there and all the food was excellent. The fuel dock is easy on - easy off. Overall a delightful stop.

Service plus location, 2015-10-25
Captain: , Charleston, SC (364)

Having stopped here for many years I find it a excellent stop in a location where options are limited. Clean rest rooms, lounge, sturdy but fixed docks ( little to no tide change ), nice little cafe if needed.
Be careful on entering, I found 5/12 feet coming in and 6 feet leaving at entrance to marina.

Great Stop, 2015-10-22
Captain: , Colchester VT (380)

Other reviews are quite accurate - a great stop on the way to or from the Alligator River. We needed a place to be able to stop before transiting the Alligator River where we could get our dog ashore (there are not really any safe places until you get through to the Pungo, we felt) so we made a stop here. Logan is great. The fuel prices are the best we have seen. The docks and pilings are in great shape and the rest rooms are super clean. The only thing they need is a little better pressure in the shower water! If you need a place to stop, this is it. Will return.

Great stop, 2015-10-17
Captain: , Wickford, RI (1007)

Roberto & Maria
Kadey Krogen 48'

This is a great stop after crossing the Albermarle Sound, or before crossing. As others have said in previous comments, it's not a destination but a safe, comfortable marina to stay. Nothing fancy. Great ice cream, good wifi, docks and pickings are in very good shape with no nails or bolts sticking out. Miss. Wanda is warm and friendly, and her son, Logan is polite, respectful and just a very nice person, who by the way knows how to handle lines.
It gets a bit shallow after entering the breakwater, but with our 5.5' draft we never bumped. Will go back for sure.

Fantastic stop, 2015-10-10
Captain: , Castalia NC (110)

Great place to stop. We stop and get gas in the RV going to the beach and first stop by boat. We stayed the night with the Boat US discount. Wifi was great! Easy to get in and out. Would definately stay again!

Helpful Shelter in a Storm, 2015-10-09
Captain: , Charleston, SC (87)

Got towed to here after engine quit. Everyone was helpful and Wanda the owner let me stay for a week until I got my engine fixed. Nice showers and lounge. Clean and cheap laundry room. Very sheltered from anything but an east wind. Keep in mind that if there is a named storm headed this way you have to leave. Best bet is to go south through canal to Belhaven.

Great stopover, Great Facility, 2015-09-23
Captain: , Wilton Cr (10)

Pulled in heading north to escape 25 gusting to 30 winds. Stayed 2 nights so far and maybe a 3 rd waiting foe winds to subside. Everyone has been most helpful and friendly. Place is clean. Thanks goodness dogs are not allowed to poop anywhere. Wanda got a mechanic to help me with a problem. Quick fix. Food is good in the grill.

What can you say?, 2015-08-05
Captain: , Austin, Texas (200)

Situated right where you want a slip, Alligator Marina is a welcome refuge and staging point whether you're headed north or south. Don't let all the "Don't" signs with their many exclamation points upset you, just appreciate location, the clean showers, cold water laundry and the grill and beer cooler in the convenience store that's the marina office.

A stop not a destination, 2015-07-09
Captain: , Grand Haven, MI (684)

Had lots of help getting tied to the dock. Noticed lots of signs that said not a dog area. We were informed that dogs could be in the areas but needed to be on a leash and to picked up after. Not a problem our dog is always on leash and I carry bags.
Had burgers at the grill and found everyone in the store friendly and willing to chat. Miss Wanda could be mistaken for not friendly but she's just a little set in her ways. She kind of smiled a knowing smile at me when I asked if it was OK for the dog to use the launch ramp to cool down and was it safe from preditors.
Bathrooms and laundry were OK clean but showers were water stained, wear shower shoes, Boaters lounge was nice and cool.
Enjoyed our overnight and food was good, I picked up Blueberry Muffins and a sausage for breakfast. If there was a problem it's that they use too much mustard.

Great facilities, but Not Friendly, 2015-06-30
Captain: , Smithfield, VA (40)

We stopped here for the night. Dockmaster was great, but the "cafe" staff were not friendly at all. They were irritated that we were there.

Avoid if possible, 2015-06-22
Captain: , Beaufort SC (20)

Just a bad day all around...
After pushing through the rough waters of the Albemarle Sound (FYI-the crab pots make you feel like you are trying to traverse a mine field), we arrived at the Alligator River Marina. A very nice man was there to help us tie up. The dock is very well built. That's about all I can say on the plus side.
When we hiked around to the gas station (this is the road to Nags Head and lots of tourist need gas!), we met the owner of the facility. She immediately demanded to know where we got her email address. We had emailed her to make a reservation and she didn't like the fact that her email was being shared on AC. When we mentioned that the restrooms needed attention, she was quick to tell us that she had not had time to get to them. In her defense, it was Saturday - flip day for the beach tourists, and it was extremely hot. Regardless, the bath facilities were not clean and did not look any better later in the evening.
One more thing... I don't think they like dogs at this marina given the number of "NO DOGS ALLOWED" signs posted around the property. There must have been a dozen or more of those signs!
Bottom line - stay there if you must be I really recommend trying to bypass this marina.

Great entry., 2015-05-26
Captain: , Lloyd harbor ny (125)

First time for our 63 foot Outer Reef. Always a bit skeptical for it's close proximity to bridge but the staight in approach to their 100 ft plus main dock in a well protected basin iwth adequate room to turn around. Restaurant is really a snack bar but breaksfast was good. Staff was cordial. Never met Ms Whanda, so no input there. Only complaint was main dock water supply was turned off. Would stop AGAIN.

Nice marina, 2015-05-26
Captain: , Knoxville, Tennessee (230)

First viable stop for us after traveling 73 miles north through Alligator River. Perfect stop. Tough cross current after passing through Alligator River bridge to get there, which was further complicated by the NUMEROUS crab pots we had to dodge....but once we got out of the current, it was very calm. We had a straight in shot to a face dock, which we had a choice of either port or starboard tie

Great location, 2015-05-14
Captain: , Norfolk, VA (165)

This marina is located in a crucial spot along the ICW as there are no alternatives close by if the weather deteriorates. The owner Wanda came out to great our group of four trawlers and had us tied up in no time. Finger piers to the starboard side on approach offer about 15 feet, long enough for our mid ships gate. To port is a long face pier. A small gas station offers to go or seating style fast food. Breakfast sandwiches were great. Water depth in the entrance channel was 5.3 feet. Wind induced tides run about 6 inches here.

Great Wi-Fi, but..., 2015-05-14

Gasoline filled up...PUMP OUT BROKEN? Review from October 2014 said so....but...Still...??? Why??? Need to fix it!! NO ONE ON THE DISMAL SWAMP HAD IT EITHER!!! What do these people do?? Never mind, don't want to know!

Nice stop and people, 2015-05-08
Captain: , Dutch Harbor, RI (411)

We happened upon this place on our way north. It is a nice place to take a break from any foul weather in the Alligator River. Basic amenities but nice. Logan is a nice guy and friendly. The entrance is a bit narrow and shallow but the bottom is soft mud. We had no problem with our 5' draft.

Great staging area for Albemarle Sound crossing, 2015-05-02
Captain: , Atlanta (770)

Stayed here the night of 4/27/15, stayed two nights to wait on good weather for Albemarle Sound crossing. Fixed docks, but no real tide. Had a great breakfast at the marina/Shell station. Dock was sheltered, and they have a nice lounge area in adjacent building. Not much to do outside of the marina, but as it is last stop going north before the sound, a lot of people come through to hang with.

Thankful, 2015-03-27
Captain: , bangor me (31)

If you need a stop in bad weather - and today was 30-35kts from the north - this is the place to stop. Friendly, helpful and sheltered.
Thank you!

Great service, good food!, 2015-03-18
Captain: , New Bern, NC (20)

We had prop damage on our way from Edenton to Alligator River Marina last fall. While waiting for BoatUS, we called Miss Wanda and she arranged for the best diver in the area to meet us as we pulled in to the marina. The damage required ordered parts and a few days wait - Miss Wanda arranged for a car rental so we could go home to New Bern. By the time we returned, the parts had arrived and were installed.

The restaurant food is simple but excellent.

Nice Country Marina, 2015-02-20
Captain: , Williamsburg, VA (745)

Nice marina with deep water and wide slips behind a gas station and small restaurant. There is a hump in the entrance to be careful of when entering. But, it is well marked. Quiet and clean bathrooms and showers. We ate at the restaurant and had a good meal. Reasonably priced.

Another night time landing, 2015-01-20
Captain: , delaware city, DE (80)

We spoke with owner, Wanda, earlier in day to confirm ability for our over night stay. We arrived after sundown. We had a quiet and sheltered stay. Thank you for the hospitality. Clean and great jump off for continued trek down the Alligator River which is HUGE!!

Rough late season crossing of the Sound. Stopped for fuel and a nights rest with no fetch. New shower/laundry/lounge
Wi-fi Fuel docks don't open till 9am off season.

Nice Folks, 2014-11-20
Captain: , Annapolis, MD (310)

Friendly folks, but there is really nothing here expect for fuel.

Great spot and very helpful, 2014-11-10
Captain: , Milford, Ct (138)

Docked next to a gas station but very helpful - nice docks, laundry and showers We limped in with some problems and Ms Wanda had put us in touch with Everett Marine who were there less than an hour after we arrived. Both did a great job.

Neat and Clean Family Owned Marina, 2014-10-26
Captain: , Oriental, N.C. (352)

Easy access from ICW and well-protected marina with well-maintained docks. We tied to the face dock and had a very peaceful night. We got up early and had a good breakfast at the diner on site. We had read some of the other reviews with some concern. However, we were treated by Wanda and all her staff with the utmost professionalism and courtesy. We will be back.

Well Protected Small Marina, 2014-10-14
Captain: , Lizella GA (1826)

I stopped here for gas and had to buy Ethanol gas for the first time in 3 years. The Marina is new looking and looks solid and well protected from all but easterly winds. Very friendly service.

Beware of piling bolts, 2014-10-09
Captain: , St. Augustine, FL (1381)

Exposed piling bolts at fuel damaged our teak toe rail. Marina ok for bare essentials: fuel, water (need to provide own hose), ice. Mini market very limited (chips, candy, soda). Large lawn for pet walking. As this is a road side fuel station I can't imagine spending the night unless compelled by very poor weather.

Nice place, 2014-09-24
Captain: , New Smyrna Beach, Fl. (200)

Had a NorEaster blowing so hunkered down in here. We pleasantly surprised by the hospitality, great fixed docks, and the cleanand private, showers. There is a grill on premissis, opens at 5:00 for breakfast, closes at 6:30.Logan tied us up and got us fuel. I needed to fish a line through my boom. Logan drove 15 miles to bring me a fishing tool, the next morning. Nothing but good to say about this marina.

Needs to be somewhere, 2014-09-16
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (185)

This is a nice little marina. Docks in good condition, power and water hook ups adequate. Showers, laundry facilities meticulessly kept by Ms Wanda (who I did actually meet, as she was making the rounds, checking on the facilities). And the fried chicken was excellent! But it is in the middle of absolutely no-where. A great one night stop, but can't image counting cars pulling up to gas pumps for two nights running.

Convenient, Easy, 2014-09-15
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (502)

Stopped here yesterday for fuel and night. Had nothing less than 7' in the well defined entrance.
Never met Miss Wanda, but Glenn was friendly and helpful.
Paid $3.59 for diesel w/ .10 discount for over 200 g. $1.50 for dockage.
Showers were very clean and nice.
The place is literally a road-side convenience store with a marina.
Food is like a limited diner and the service is good. Opens for breakfast at 5:00, closes at 6:30-7:00 PM
We give it 5 stars but there is zero security.

Small but still great, 2014-09-01
Captain: , Oriental,NC (588)

4 stars just because the dockage isn't the best, however there are nice showers and bathrooms, and the convenient store that is attached does breakfast.

clean but to expensive for what it is, 2014-08-16
Captain: , Cape Coral (221)

We paid $ 1.75/f out of season. The slips ar with short docks and beside of the Shellshop there is nothing. No pool, no bycicels, no courtesy car, no tennis place, no happy hour - we recommend to anchor out and to go to Dowry Creek Marina for the next stop. There you will get all the anemnities at $ 1.25.

A good value for money, 2014-08-10
Captain: , Hartfield, VA (160)

Ms. Wanda runs a tight no-nonsense ship. Some people are put off by her somewhat brusque manner, but we saw her wait until 8:00 PM to make sure a distressed vessel made it into the marina. And she found somebody with a commerical pump to keep them afloat. How many marina owners would do that.

Oasis in the watery desert, 2014-07-23
Captain: , Havre de Grace, Md ac (50)

The first time that I came through here was very late in the season '06 and we were nearly out of fuel since most of the marinas had closed. They were open and had the best fried chicken in NC! I have been here a dozen or more times since and love Wanda and the chicken! She is no nonsense and always takes great care of us, no matter what season it is.

Alligator River Marina, 2014-06-17
Captain: , Heathsville, VA (50)

Very nice people and very responsive. Excellent help when docking.

keep moving, 2014-06-07
Captain: , catskill (290)

This marina was very rude. We stopped in for dinner, after dinner that was poor in quality, my wife wanted a shower. While she was showering the rude manager came out and unplugged our boat. Telling usthat was only for people who were staying the night. We had spent $30 in the dinner/gas station. We hoped we could have a warm shower before moving on. RUDE! bad food! wanda the *****.

A great stop, 2014-06-07
Captain: , Bourne, Ma (230)

Entry easy but at the same time a little harrowing. Very narrow entry with rocks on the side. Doesn't look deep enough. It was and the enry was easy even with a storng cross wind and current. Facilities look new and would get a 5 star from me if the showers were a little newer. Nothing near by but there is a conviece store on the property with ice cream, prepared food and some simple supplies.

alligator river marina, 2014-05-27
Captain: , Camp Lejeune, NC (180)

Disappointed in my stay this year. The cost of 1.75 per ft is not justified by the amenities. The bathrooms did not even have soap or paper towels available. Cost should not exceed 1.25 per ft. Logan the owners son is very helpful and easy to deal with.

Very friendly - accomodating people, 2014-04-23
Captain: , Fort Myers Beach, FL (361)

Helpfull docking, fueling and moving to overnight docking area.
Ms Wanda came out to greet us as we were fueling.
This is a bare bones marina in a convenient area. They had everything we needed and more but they aren't fancy.
We were so very happy to be there and tied up for the nignt after a very windy transit of the Alligator River.

Good Stopover , 2014-04-02
Captain: , New London, PA (302)

Stopped here for the night while heading north fro Beaufort NC to Baltimore. Arrived rather late but Miss Wanda met us at the fuel dock, got us situated for the night and we were even able to get in an order for dinner. Not al lot of bells & whistles but a very nice place and worth a stopover.

Yes you can stop here in the off-season, 2014-02-26
Captain: , Edmonton (279)

Many of the reviews mention the proprietress, Miss Wanda. We did not get the opportunity to meet her as she was on vacation. However I can say from what we saw, that she runs a tight ship - the facilities were in very good shape, and clean even though it is off-season. It's smart to call ahead as the on-call staff had to drive out to meet us. Diesel was reasonably-priced. Unfortunately, the adjoining Shell station/restaurant/mini-mart was also closed for the season, and there is nothing else out there. We did have a very quiet evening, enjoyed the lounge and the free wi-fi.

Good Marina for bad weather, 2014-01-04
Captain: , Stuart FL (835)

April 2012

Easy entrance to marina. Pretty good resturant at gas station. Now they have Boat US discount so price is a bit better than before. Showers and laundry OK. We have Sprint and could not get a signal. Also have an Island Time WiFi Amp and could not pick up the marina WiFi. It is available in the club house but having been spoiled using cell phone and Island Time Antenna was disappointing at having to go to club house to get signal.

Fuel Stop 20 Dec 2013, 2013-12-23
Captain: , Green Cove Springs, FL (280)

Needed fuel stop after Dismal Swamp route since Lamb's still doesn't have gas. Easy marked entrance from the channel parallel to the bridge. Very helpful with getting tied up and fueled. Gasoline $3.59 with ethanol. Fried chicken pretty good but a bit over priced at $10 for 2 pieces and 2 sides. Bridge tender appreciated a call letting him know we were going to the marina.

In the right place, 2013-12-07
Captain: , Lewes, DE (178)

There is nothing wrong with this little marina on the backside of the Shell station on route 64 on the western shore of the alligator river bridge. It's easy in and out with plenty of help from the staff. There isn't a lot of choices on this stretch of the ICW and ARM fills the bill.

Great place to stop for some good food, 2013-11-18
Captain: , Vancouver (510)

On entry to the marina I had to keep to the right with my 6ft draft but more water once inside. Plenty of room to turn the 50 feet of Northern Ice even in the wind of 18 kts. Great people to help with the lines and nice laid-back attitude.

a good place to stop, 2013-11-16
Captain: , Hayes va (163)

The wind driven tide was very low and still had 6' into the marina, deeper once inside.
Ms. Wanda is short on conversation but very helpful. Two boats had various problems, mechanical and other, and she was quick to help resolve the problems.
It is a well run marina and would recommend staying there.

Not bad for an overnight., 2013-11-12
Captain: , Hampton, VA (90)

On the way south, this is in early Nov, it was okay for an overnighter. We didn't find too much road noise, bath rooms were clean and the convenience store had good ice cream. Ice icream is important!

good for fuel, 2013-11-11
Captain: , Bristol, RI (782)

Would not recommend to stay but fine as a fuel stop. Gets very shallow in the entry. Wave action at entrance can be challenging. Fuel is basically a roadside gas station with a dock. Not scenic, road noise, not great for overnight.

Great Oasis, 2013-11-04
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (1190)

Having just crossed Albemarle Sound in winds gusting to 30kts this was a great oasis to pull into. Logan was very accommodating and handled the lines, power cords, etc. We saw no less than 6.9 across the entrance then 8' in the marina area. We stayed on the short face dock next to the boat ramp and didn't have any issues with exposed bolts as previously mentioned. Perhaps they're on the longer pier. Very good WiFi, laundry room, etc. Would definitely stop here again.

Very convenient stop, 2013-10-22
Captain: , Michigan (583)

We usually plan this as a fueling stop north and southbound. It's a gas station that happens to have a marina in the back yard but try Annette's fried chicken or crab cakes and you will come back too!
We have always had great help at the docks.

Nice Surprise!, 2013-10-21
Captain: , Cape Porpoise, Maine (250)

We don't usually stay here, but were delayed in Coinjock and decided to try this marina. The dock hand was very helpful and professional. The docks clean and in very good shape with no protruding bolts. Fuel was available at a good price. Dockage rates are very good with a valid TowBoat US card. Wanda was very helpful. Who cares if she doesn't smile a lot. She's kind and efficient. We'll be back. We didn't try the grill.

Good Food, nice location, 2013-10-06
Captain: , Cleveland, OHio (421)

The food is great, even though it is a Shell gas station.
Try the fried chicken.
We pulled in after a long day, and tied up in the well, easy in and easy out.

Very clean bathrooms, $1/wash, $1.50/dry. Good captain's lounge. Reasonable price for diesel.

Dock hands and kitchen staff were very welcoming and helped us dock and took care of our food needs.

Would recommend this as a stop between Elizabeht City and Belhaven, NC

Good Location/Easy in and Out, 2013-10-05
Captain: , Austin, Texas (1774)

We are running south from the Chesapeake and this marina is a good stop before you enter the Alligator River. Its the only marina for many miles. The greeting by the dockhand was excellent. The marina is next to and part of a Shell gas station so there is a good bit of traffic into the station. The docks were fine, and we did not find any exposed bolts as mentioned previously.

The bathrooms were not very clean, and had no paper towels or hand dryers. Guess the idea here is to just wipe your hands on your shorts. Put down all your shades as there are so many lights at the gas station and on the dock that you can read at night inside your boat.

We did not try the food but other boaters said it was good. This marina is the only choice south of Coinjock or Elizabeth City all the way down to the Pungo River. We have always anchored out in the Alligator, but this time we thought we would try the marina. It was OK, but could use some cleaning.

Small and Friendly, 2013-08-22
Captain: , Rochester, NY (493)

Friendly staff, clean and well-kept.

Easy access.

Great little restaurant and convenience store.

Has its own (non-functioning) lighthouse - a replica of the Hatteras Lighthouse, built by the owner for his wife's birthday.

Would like to have have stayed longer, but we were running from Hurricane Sandy!

Good stop going north before Albermarle Sound, 2013-08-16
Captain: , Englewood, Fl (351)

Stayed on the face wall on August 8, 2013, only boat in the marina. The restrooms and showers were quite a walk, and the captians lounge didn't smell very good. On the up side the restrooms in the Shell Station were available early in the morning, and the fried chicken was great. Going north a good stop

An Okay Stop, 2013-08-11
Captain: , Between Boats, USA (623)

Spent one night here in August 2013. I read and heard a lot of stories about the place. Ms. Wanda never made an appearance to us, so I will reserve judgement there. The place is nice and its location is key to its success.

We were met by Glenn who was very pleasant. He tied us up in our slip, but left rather quickly after just tying off a bow line or two. We figured the rest out on our own. Fixed docks and short finger piers are needing some repair. There are hundreds of nail heads that have worked out of the dock boards, so use caution walking. The gas station is what it is. We didn't try the food, but it had the usualy fare. The bathrooms were not very clean when we were there. fresh poop in one toilet and the floors of the showers were right nasty. And what felt like notebook paper as toilet tissue. A huge plus were the very actice hummingbird feeders on the facility building. That was a nice touch.

Be aware that the face dock is $1.75/ft. while the slips are $1.50/ft. and about the only thing to do there is watch traffic cross the bridge. They have a pretty good thing there, but it could use a bit of touching up.

P.S. One other plus was that we had a Thank You note in our mailbox before we got back home. Good job.

I love this place, 2013-07-25
Captain: , Jupiter, FL (1306)

Nice folks, good food, and quiet.
Logan, the Dock Master is a good guy and very acommodating. Don't let the Shell Station fool you. They have good food and great service. Really good fried chicken and crabs.
We draw 6' and it's a little skinny at the jetties, but there's enough to make without notice.
We may stay here a few days on the way south and rent a car to see the Outer Banks which are just across the bridge.
Internet was okay with a powered antenna.
Just nice folks and a clean marina with good food.

Great Stop - Consistant, 2013-07-03
Captain: , Oriental, NC (151)

Have stayed here several times. Each visit was a couple of years apart. VERY well run operation with VERY service oriented staff. Great food, good pricing. 6-21-13 weather and early morning schedule change caused us to stop in again. When they found out it was our 44th wedding anniversary they went out of their way to make us feel special. Look foward to spending time here when we are in the area as facilities are top notch.

Unique Marina, 2013-07-01
Captain: , Beaufort, S.C. (640)

This facility is unique in that it is both a Shell station serving cars going by on the highway and a marina. We spent the night on a fixed dock with a short narrow finger pier. It was a bit of a challenge getting our big dog on and off the boat, but once he figured out the system there was plenty of grassy area to take him for a short walk. There is room for a few boats on the other side of the marina at floating docks. The Dockmaster was very helpful in getting us settled into our slip despite significant wind. In the morning he came around and gave each boat a newspaper.

Wonderful Oasis, 2013-05-29
Captain: , Solomons, MD (1025)

We thought we might have to travel 90 miles in one day until we found Aligator River Marina on Active Captain. It has all the basics -- clean heads, WiFi, nice showers, fuel and a restaurant with "world acclaimed hamburgers" (at least according to the sign). It was a wonderful oasis for us and two other boats -- that's all that were there the night we stopped. The staff was wonderful (and with little tidal variance, it is not hard to tie off) as was the fact that this marina is part service station and part marina. And the price was right. If we need a marina in this part of the ICW again, we would not hesitate.

5/24/13: Strong winds and choppy waves caused us to stop again at Alligator River Marina. Our experience was the same -- great help at the dock, very good prices and good food. There also seemed to be an improvement in the facilities as they seemed even nicer than before.

Good staging point to cross Albemarle, 2013-05-26
Captain: , North Carolina (344)

Docked on the face dock. Dock hand was fueling another boat and stopped long enough to grab our lines and then left. Didn't use facilities but everything seemed well kept and clean. Store had a little bit of everything. We did not try the grill.

nice place!, 2013-05-23
Captain: , Frisco Co (92)

Very well protected marina. Bathrooms clean and well kept. Staff so helpful and very good at handling boats. Can't seem to do enough for you! Grill serves great food at a reasonable price.

Destination to the Outer Banks, 2013-05-18
Captain: , Charleston, SC (140)

Exceptional dock help. Guided us right up to the dock. Super clean, did not use the facilities but they were offered and I'm sure they were clean and spotless. Our dingy crapped out. The next morning Ms. Wanda meet us and had a rental car and repair staff on the needed repairs instantly. We spent the day exploring Kitty Hawk and Wright Brothers Memorial. Flies, our only issue. Stayed two nights when the plan was for one.
After reading a review that declared Ms. Wanda cold... REALLY! This is a first class LADY! And a boater. I have a business that I run; I would have her on my team any day! Local knowledge and a great story teller explains why we enjoyed this opportunity to visit with Ms. Wanda and her son. Stop by and give Ms. Wanda a hug. You will not regret it!

Pleasantly surprised, 2013-05-11
Captain: , Athens, AL (641)

Wasn't expecting much but it was very nice. Absolutely nothing to do here but everything was clean and Logan was the "how else can I help you" type. Definitely a convenient staging point for jumping across Albmarle Sound heading north.

Great stopover, 2013-05-10
Captain: , Lake Champlain (40)

We stopped here for the night to get some marine electronis repaired in Nags Head. Staff is v ery helpful and the marina is reall barebones. It's attached to a highway convenience store so they have pretty much everything a 7-11 has plus some marine stuff. Only complaint is the traffic noise from the highway but it wasn't all that bad.

Well-Protected/Good 1 Night Stay, 2013-05-02
Captain: , Kinsale (130)

This marina was neat and clean but lacked adequate water pressure for showers and laundry, and the bathrooms had no hand soap or paper towels. It has a good inside lounge area with satellite TV, tables, and seating. It was nice to have the grill/restaurant for meeting other boaters and for the hamburgers and fried chicken. Although the area is remote, it's convenient to the ICW.

Nice place and friendly staff, 2013-05-01
Captain: , wichita falls (260)

Stayed here overnight and loved it. Great staff, clean facilities and good docks.

Docked behind a gas station?, 2013-05-01
Captain: , Lighthouse Point, FL (227)

Never thought I would say that I enjoyed being docked behind a gas station, but I did. Logan was a great help in docking, the docks are in great shape. Saw no signs of exposed nails. The lecture we got from the cook in the marine offices/gas station/gift shop/convenience store/restaurant about when to come for dinner was hilarious. Good stop over if not going directly from Bellhaven to Elizabeth City.

Great as Always, 2013-04-12
Captain: , Reedville, VA (689)

After a run from Belhaven, this is a perfect stop. Price and facilities can't be beat. Great fuel prices. This is our third stopover. Verizon 4G available here.

Nice place to stop, 2013-04-01
Captain: , Wilmington, NC (520)

Stayed here for the night (21 March 2013) after anchoring off the Elizabeth River in Norfolk the night before. Wanda was very accomodating, coming down in the morning before we left. There was no one but us since it was off-season, and the store wasn't open. It's a really nice place to wait for the Alligator River Bridge opening. I would rate it higher on-season as there would be more availability of the facilities.

Nice place to stop, 2013-03-29
Captain: , Stafford, VA (1079)

This marina is not near anything, but it is a very comfortable place to stop. You can have a bulkhead or a slip (your choice), there is plenty of nice grass for dogs to run, the staff is very helpful, and even though the restaurant has limited hours it has very good food.

Great place to stop, 2013-03-13
Captain: , St. Thomas, USVI (624)

There is no attraction attached to this stop and it is isolated so they could have just done the bare minimum and likely had business, but the staff/owners seemed to go out of their way to make this a nice stop over service wise, cleanliness wise and organizationally. The dockmaster was wonderful and more than willing to assist with whatever we needed. he even came to make sure the a/c was cool enough when I was doing laundry. Other reviewers are correct that there is nothing going on here and the restaurant is more like a snack bar/concession which is inside a gas station convenience store, however the Wifi was the best of the entire trip from Ft. Lauderdale and the clean and cool laundry room was great. The washers a dryers (2 of each) look a little worn, but they were the most efficient we encountered on this trip. All dry in one session!

12/31/12: Even though this marina was technically closed, the manager came down to meet us, get us settled in and to make sure we got hooked up and fueled. The above and beyond service we always receive here makes this a must stop for us after an Albemarle Sound crossing. There is no razzmatazz here but you do get a quiet, secure, well-maintained dock with competent, friendly staff.

Good stopover, 2012-11-18
Captain: , Oxford, Md (130)

Good docks, bathrooms, laundry, llounge, wifi. Only restraunt is at gas station on the road (OK). Dock fees reasonable. Notheing else near by so you'll need to do provisioning elsewhere

We had a bit ruff across the Albemarle and stopped in here rather than anchoring. The food was good, staff nice. Price knock with Boat US discount. Showers not the cleanest but had really hot water. Wifi.

Stopped here in October, after a tiring run across the Albemarle Sound. Not much here, but Ms. Wanda's did have good food. Well protected from the west. Have stopped here twice now; would return.

Alligator River Marina, 2012-10-21
Captain: , Cambridge, MD (170)

It is always nice to visit "Miss Wanda" at Alligator River Marina. this is a nice pit stop along the ICW. The docks are fine and everyone is very friendly. Annette is still cooking up that fine southern food. The facilities are pretty basic and it would be nice to have paper towels in the heads to wash your hands. The washers and dryers are a little rusty. They advertise "dog friendly" with a large play area to allow your dogs "off lease", however there are multiple signs around he marina to keep dogs out. I'm sure these are a result of dog owners that don't clean up. Overall, we enjoy stopping here on our way up and down the ICW.

Great stop, 2012-10-16
Captain: , Rock Hall, Md (230)

Friendly marina. Had all our basic needs. We stayed two nights because of mechanical and weather issues. Ms Wanda checked on us throughout our stay to make sure all was well. Good wifi and laundry. There is a lounge with cable TV. Dock master was very helpful with fuel and tie up. The ice cream was great!

When There's No Other Choice, 2012-10-08
Captain: , Hollywood, MD (271)

Alligator River Marina is a comfortable place to dock after crossing the Albemarle Sound. It isn't a destination, but there aren't too many other choices unless you want to anchor and take your chances with the wind. I've stopped here before out of necessity, but the place has lost a little of its charm. The Wifi didn't work and there was no one around who could explain the problem to me. The TV in the captain's lounge that smelled a little musty wasn't working and the showers needed so touch-up. They deliver a newspaper to you in the morning and the store and cafe at the gas station are all great features.

Convenient location, 2012-10-04
Captain: , Toronto (80)

Worked well for us
We were enroute from coin jock to bell haven, this is in a great location for a stop.
Entrance was fine at 7 ft minimum.
Good field for dogs to have a run
Washrooms were fine.
Restaurant , as others noted. , is basic

A good stop after crossing Albermarle Sound southbound, 2012-08-30
Captain: , Amelia Island, FL (507)

We found this marina to be charming. The fact that there is nothing around it is a positive; if you are looking for quiet. The grill that operates as part of the gas station serves hamburgers to die for. The wifi works fine; no problem with the electrical hookup. The dockside water is well water. Ms Wanda and her staff are most hospitable. They certainly made us feel welcome. Would we stop here again? In a heartbeat.

Easy access and clean place. Not much to see or do, but a good stop. Careful upon approach in a blow, particularly NNE.

Weak resturant, 2012-06-11
Captain: , Grand Haven (470)

I heard so much about the great hamburger at this location, however when we went to dine at 1800 the menu didn't even
list the world renoun burger. We had the trout and were not that happy with the meal. The gas was the best price that we have seen in a long time. This was a shell gas station and the price at the pump for cars was 20 cents less. That I do not understand--Maybe it's the captive cliant. No TV at the docks.

Captain: , Kings Creek Marina (766)

The Alligator River Marina is the oasis we all try to find when we%u2019ve been out too long. It is the fertile ground where new friendships spontaneously grow, and where old friends are glad to see you again.
Great fried chicken and hamburgers. Outstanding breakfasts. Clean showers and laundry facilities. Friendly staff.
The only reason we ever leave Wanda and the gang is so we can have all the fun of coming back again. And, we will. Again and again.

Great Stop Over, 2012-05-03
Captain: , St. Louis, MO (1850)

Recently dredged getting in and out was no problem. Loooong newish face dock for transients. All facilities are good. Great hamburgers at the gas station. Stayed two nights waiting for S/SW winds to transit Albermarle. Very enjoyable. Would stay again.

Nice marina, but, 2012-04-26
Captain: , Lewis Creek, Md (1304)

Wanda has a nice facility-rerasonable fuel prices, greasy spoon resteraunt, but good, and nice lounge. Don't do laundry there. There is too much iron in the water, and some yellow cloths can be the result

No Depth Issues, 2012-04-25
Captain: , Providence, ri (60)

Dredging is taking place. Saw no less than 8 feet in the channel to the breakwater, and only one small area of 7 feet just inside the breakwater on the centerline.

still not dreged at the entrance, 2012-04-03
Captain: , sassafras river, md (303)

stayed here on my trip south down the icw, slip are a bit intimadating with rock face and very small finger docks, if docking during a northerly blow it can get hairy. dockmaster works inside the gas station and will allow brief layover on the gas dock, especially if you ask. Nice little stop for breakfast before continuing either north or south
4/3/2012. Just spoke to wanda. Still awaiting the dredge. entrance is anywhere between 4.5 feet and 6 feet depending on the wind.

Like coming home 3/28/12, 2012-03-29
Captain: , Wicomico Church, VA (524)

We have always been greeted warmly by either Wanda or the dockmaster. Very well maintained. A little mucky coming through the breadwater, but we just pushed through. Dredge due in a day or so. Very well protected.

Priced right., 2012-01-17
Captain: , florida (230)

The marina is closed for the winter months, but you can tie up anyway and the marina owner will come by to collect the rent. Be careful coming in. We went aground at the entrance of the breakwater on the port side. We barely made it on the starboard side (we draw five feet).

The docks are in great shape. There is a marina owned gas station/convenience store on premises, but it too was closed. The wifi was down.

Weather stop, 2011-11-28
Captain: , Fremantle, West Australia (1448)

Ducked in to beat a closing weather window. Staff are not all that happy, but they are very efficient. Don't know why. Ms Wanda introduced herself. Dockmaster was very helpful. Restaurant had down home stuff - OK for dinner. Showers good. Nothing to do in the area but that's not why we were there.

bleak, desolate and attitude, 2011-11-22
Captain: , bristol, ri (31)

The first thing we noticed was all of the "don't do this" signs posted everywhere. The second thing we noticed was the cold welcome we received in contrast to ALL of the other marinas that we stayed at. The dockmaster isn't there much. We were lucky to have help docking from other cruisers as the dockmaster was nowhere to be found.
The only restaurant, if you can call it one, is part of the gas station and it is a greasy spoon. Everything is fried, including the drinks.
Finally, Ms. Wanda sets the tone of the marina...stern, cold and definitely in control of her domain.
Avoid if possible or just view it as a parking lot for the night.

Last Stop for Fuel before Alligator river (southbound) and Pungo, 2011-11-16
Captain: , Gulf Shores Alabama (748)

We stopped in here for fuel, ice, etc before heading south. We had planned on staying overnight but we felt that the owner was not in a friendly mode, and just seemed to have an "attitude" that I haven't seen since our start of this trip up in Lake Erie. We got our fuel and it worked well, so I guess they did what they were supposed to do.

Location Location Location, 2011-11-04
Captain: , Edenton, NC (887)

Not new marina but everything works. No depth issue for us. Minimum depth we saw on approach was 5.9 feet momentarily right at the breakwater and the wind had been blowing north for two days and probably had the water level down a little. No apparent damage from Hurricane Irene. One minor gripe. When I needed a 1.5 gallons of dinghy fuel they objected when I went fill my jerry can at the service station pump. Seemed odd to make an issue when I was just trying to not bother the staff and self-serve at a pump. Gasoline at the fuel docks is $.30/gal more expensive than at the service station pump. Odd to make an issue for $.45, but maybe there's some obscure regulation I don't know about.

Loved the alligator bits., 2011-11-04

The only redeeming quality of this marina is its location. You might need it badly.

The Only Spot to Stop, 2011-10-31
Captain: , City Island New York (600)

No frills marina, it has laundry, showers etc, which are clean, but the brownish well water makes them unappetising, and the machines only do a cold wash. Ms Wanda very welcoming, and helped us tie up after fueling, $3.68/gal. diesel. Docks $1.75/foot. Nothing to see or visit around, but Ms Wanda drove me to town to fill my propane tank. They take care of you here!

Right place at the Right Time, 2011-10-27
Captain: , Baltimore, MD (386)

When the Alligator River Bridge closed due to +35 mph wind, this marina was a life saver! Difficult docking due to high winds and the staff stayed with us until we were secure. Price was a little over $1/ft plus $4 for 30 amp service. Clean showers, toilets and laundry. Wifi available. We were very grateful to be in a safe and clean place.

Nice place to stop over, 2011-10-17
Captain: , Greenville TX (580)

This is a nice little marina. It has a fairly decent store, fast food available, decent rates, and comfortable night's rest. The entrance is very shallow - we went aground in the mouth of the marina, but could power through. Another boat (under sail only) got stuck twice and had to be towed twice by BoatU.S. to get in.

Nice convenient stop, 2011-10-07
Captain: , Stuart, Fl (70)

On our way south, this was a nice stop. Wanda and Morris are very nice folks and the marina was easy approach, never saw anything under 5ft8in on our approach. Honor the green day markers "1" and "3" and you will have no problem. Other than the gas station and grill, there is nothing here. We like it quiet, so very happy. Diesel was competitive 3.759/gal, cheaper than other places south of here. Clean showers and laundry, nice green area to walk the dog. We would have rated it higher if there were more stores close by.

Captain: , Annapolis, Md (30)

The staff are always helpful and accomodating, even in the off season. Easy docking, good grill food, and plenty of odds and ends in the store. The kind of marina you would find back in the 1960s

Alligator River Marina, 2011-07-05
Captain: , Red Lion, DE (712)

Stayed here twice for a total of four nights. The personel were very accommodating and the store provided a good choice of items. It is a good walk to the laundry/showers. The food was typical Southern Cooking - not great but not bad. The fairway was plenty wide enough for spinning our 45 foot catamaran around.

Alligator River Marina, 2011-06-27
Captain: , Smith Mountain Lake (496)

I stayed here in August of 2010 on a trip with my son in a small 22' sailboat. We were the only people there that evening. The bugs simply overwhelmed us and we hunkered down in the guest lounge and watched TV all night. The showers were dirty and the lounge was full of bugs. All in all it was not that charming of a place to hang out but the gas station does have a nice grill and it did have everything you need and the people are nice. As we were approching, the dock master at the gas station hailed me to warn of the shoaling, as we were not on the normal approach. I have a swing keel so it didn't matter but I did appreciate her effort.

Alligator River Marina, 2011-06-23
Captain: , Marco Island, FL (50)

The marina was nice and they do have a restaurant but we were covered with bugs. Apparently in June the bugs are out of control here.

Our second stop here., 2011-06-07
Captain: , Madison, Ohio (400)

This our second stop here, we stopped southbound in the fall and now back northbound. Channel is shoalled to 5 1/2' in the breakwall. Pumpouts are $17.50, but they warn you before pumping out. The slips are cheaper than the side tie on the wall. Restrooms and showers are OK Small convenient store with snackbar and AM breakfast at 5AM.

alligator marina rate increase, 2011-05-30
Captain: , st augustine (10)

rate is 2/ft plus $7 for electric. lots of noise from the highway. no wifi, only hardwire. lots of no dogs allowed signs everywhere.

Shoaling at breakwater, 2011-05-20
Captain: , Springfield, VA (130)

After making a slip reservation we learned that the marina entrance had shoaled up and no boats drawing 5 feet or more could enter the breakwater. At that point options were few. We went on across the Albemarle river and anchored late in the day with strong winds.

protected spot, 2011-04-28
Captain: , Brookings (308)

Great protected marina for the 35+ mph winds we expected. Price was right, food available, showers, wifi, laundry in nice clean areas, & the paper waiting by our slip when we got up this morning. Nothing else in the near by area but still was a pleasant place to hole up for a couple days waiting for the weather to pass.

Only game in town, 2011-04-26
Captain: , Stratford, CT (658)

There was help getting into these tricky slips with short docks, making boarding on and off a chore, especialy for the dog. The showers were clean but don't expect soap and paper towels for your hand washing. Use the dryer next to the washer-it runs twice as long as the other.
Good dog run area but dogs are not allowed any other place or you will be asked to leave without a refund. (Posted sign)
$1.50 a foot/BoatUS
Adequate restaurant if you don't feel like cooking.
Remote area with shopping 12 miles away.

Very nice marina., 2011-04-22
Captain: , Full Time Cruisers (2244)

Great marina. Very good staff. Well maintained facilities - dock area. Combination gas station/mini-market and marina all rolled into one. Laundry room, captains louge and restrooms are average. If your on the face docks, it could be a little tight to turn around on a windy day. Entrance is also tight, do not navigate when another vessel is transitting through jetty area. Don't pass this one.

Alligator River Marina., 2011-02-13
Captain: , Beaufort, NC (531)

We always try to stop here on our travels between Morehead City and Manteo. The staff is always been friendly, the diesel and slip prices are reasonable. The food in the small restaurant, when they are open, is pretty good. The entrance can be a bit tricky in a strong wind out of the North.

The showers are clean, they have a pet area and a convience store. That is it; do not plan on major shopping. Some of the slips are a bit tight (13'-6" beam) with a narrow finger pier on one side and they have no bulkhead, just rocks. Make haste slowly and use a spring line.

This is the only fuel on the ICW between Coinjock and Belhaven. It is never crowded, so you will have peace and quiet. With the right wind bugs can be a problem. Overall, we like this place.

A note, we were up in Manteo in late December 2010 and planned to buy fuel here on the way home. When I called I was told that they were "closed for inventory and would reopen soon". I suggest that you verify that they are open if you are depending on this place for fuel. TowboatUS is at least two hours away if you run out.

Spent one night 6-5-10 Convenient Stop. Pleaant Staff. Dockage $1.25/ft 50 Amp $7.00 The local Bridge Tender was very helpful
and Miss Wanda is doing fine. Good Place to stop. Very reasonable.

Review UpDate 9-11 & 9-12-10 Big Pice Increase to $1.75./Ft. Called on Phone and VHF for Fuel Prices they refused to quote a price advising "You have to wait until you get here" (Hours Later) Their mystery price was $2.729. It was $2.65 both at Midway in Coinjock and Dowry Creek Marina. Put off taking on 400 gallons due to their atttitude. It is No Free Newspaper. Very shallow entrance Depth 00 under keel on approach to breakwater with a 5ft draft. Water on Face dock .9 ft under keel with a 5ft draft never got higher than 1.1 ft Under Keel. Overun with Swarms of Bugs that don't go away. We were the only boat in the entire marina. Will definitely check out other locations in Columbia, N.C. before Next visit

Captain: , Houston, Texas (164)

Logan was a great dockmaster. Water and Fuel. Trash disposal. Great, friendly and knowledgable. Easy access to a very long face dock. We put a 42 ft. catamaran and a 53 ft. trimaran with alot of room to spare. Two independent diesel pumps and able to fuel both boats at the same time. Water is well water. Reported drinkable. The cost of overnight dockage is $1.25 per foot ffor the face dock and $1.00 for the slips. Definitely worth stopping here. Family owned business.

A gas station with a dock, 2010-07-05
Captain: , Boca Raton, FL (1522)

I haven't been there in awhile but that is what I remember. The docks were nice, the fuel was resonable and the out building with showers was ok but the gas station with the quick stop and little grill wasn't exactly what I anticipated by the advertising being done which made me anticipate a full restaurant. For that, I give it a low grade.

Economical stop., 2010-06-22
Captain: , Havre de Grace, MD (299)

Good stop(and the only marina) on the ICW between Bellhaven and Coinjock.

Rock jetty entrance helps in a blow, except if the wind is out of the east which can cause some excitement getting into the marina.

There are no 'bulkheads at the slips, just a rocky shore, make sure you have a spring ready to keep you from grinding on the rocks. We have a 13'5" beam, and they put is in a 13'8" wide slip. No damage to the boat, but a few splinters out of the pilings.

They still deliver a paper to your boat in the AM.

We have stopped here several times. It has always had calm water in the marina, even if the winds are strong. The facility is kept in very clean condition. You can purchase the necessities in the little quick stop and get meals until 7:30 at night. Staff is friendly and helpful. When leaving and heading north, follow the markers and not your charts and you will be fine. We have seen several people go aground in that area and Tow Boat is 3 hours away!

Miss Wanda is the Cruisers Friend, 2010-05-09
Captain: , Block Island (1679)

I love this spot. Cheap fuel, very close to ICW, protected docks and a full day's run from Norfolk. I save $4 by declining the electric, and use that $$ to buy dinner at the little restaurant. Great pet areas, clean facility and friendly staff. Nothing else to do here but stop, fuel, eat, and rest. Always the cheapest fuel around.

Great Marina, Great Owner/operator, 2010-02-23
Captain: , Cypress Landing, Chocowinity, NC (10)

I can't say enough about Miss Wanda and this marina for its care and hospitality to boters travelling the ICW. There is a helping han for docking and getting fuel, help to find local mechanics or divers when you are in trouble, and a hot breakfast if you want it. We were surprised to find a local newspaper on our boat each morning we stayed there.

Nice facilities, stressed out staff, 2009-08-05
Captain: , East Greenbush, NY (745)

First off, we never saw anything less than 8.4ft of depth, and most of the time it was over 10ft, on the way into the marina. From what I understand, the only thing driving the depth is changes in wind speed and direction, and even then it doesn’t vary much. I can’t speak to that though. The entry was easy - turn to the west immediately north of the bridge, follow along the bridge to the green mark and then head straight for the green/red entry markers to the marina. We came in with a 20kt south wind with some uncomfortable choppy seas, and the second we entered the marina the wind stopped and the waves were gone. Interestingly enough, a small bobcat was swimming across the entry channel just as we were entering. That’s the first time I had to yield right of way to a feline!!!! The marina is comprised of slips with short piers (i.e. you have to back in and put lines on pilings) or face docks. The face docks are slightly more expensive. The facility is basically an automobile gas station with a marina added behind it, but it seems just fine. They have a separate building with clean, private bathrooms with showers, laundry and a “TV Room” with a 13″ TV with satellite. The free WiFi signal is strong. I can’t say that my phone call to make the reservation or our reception upon arrival was overly friendly. They did seem annoyed to have to talk with us, but they are the only game in town and the facilities are decent. The station part of the facility has a short order restaurant (burgers but also steaks, alligator, and HARD ICE CREAM) and the regular assortment of drinks and snacks. Outside of that, it’s in the middle of nowhere, so there’s nothing else to see.

Good Stopover, 2009-07-01

Taste the Water before you fill your tanks, 2009-06-14
Captain: , Vero Beach (527)

Interesting people, good facility -- some 30 amps are dead. Every other finger pier has a bow line across it if there's a boat beside you. Morning papers delivered to the slip, lowest fuel prices we encounted in 7 month cruise. No hoses on the pump out dock, rig your own first. Pump out is $17.50. Good heads, but soft, soft water.

Taste the water first. It is soft well water and was not to our liking. Ruins the taste of ice, tea, coffee, lemonade. Feels flat an oily on the tongue. We had to pump most of 200 gallons out at out next stop and refill.
