Approach

The harbour is located by Pendinas, a conspicuous hill 120m high, with the Wellington monument at its crest. The head of the north breakwater, the Wooden Jetty, on the Wellington monument leads 140°, which clears you south of the Castle Rocks. The approach should be treated with caution in strong onshore winds, beware of cross-tides and boulders around head of the South Pier, the Stone Pier, and the Trap (an area of rough ground) which is to the north of the Wooden Jetty. The leading lights, both fixed reds and the white day marks on the Ystwyth Bridge, Lead 133°.

The Wooden Jetty is marked with Q WR 9m; Red Sector (141-175) which covers the Castle Rocks. The south Pier F1.(2) WG 10s 12m 10m. There are four FR (vertical) on a radio tower 2.8 miles to the south. The entrance is narrow with a 90° port turn inside the Wooden Jetty head. The bar is immediately outside the head of the Stone Pier; at low water springs there is about 0.7 metres on the bar when on the leading line.

Boats drawing 1.8 meters are advised to enter up to 3.0 hours before and 3.5 hours after H.W. in calm conditions

Reviews for Aberystwyth Marina
Pleasant marina, lively town, 2013-04-29
Captain: , Conwy, N. Wales (13850)

The harbour entrance can be challenging in strong NW winds, and in any conditions care needs to be taken with depths as there are shoaling patches within the harbour. Check the marina web page on navigation (http://www.abermarina.com/navigation-and-approaches-to-aberystwyth/) for really good, clear pilotage information.

We had no problems with a draft of 1.7m, but the boat on the outermost berth (hammerhead T), which is also the fuel berth, reported grounding and heeling over with a draft of 1.8m on a low spring tide of 0.4m. On talking to the harbourmaster, they said that the harbour hadn't been dredged for some time.

Aberystwyth is a university town, with a well preserved Victorian waterfront. The town is interesting and lively, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants and transport is good with the railway station close to the centre. The marina is a short walk from town, and Mike the marina manager is very friendly and informative. The facilities are currently being refitted (April 2013) so everyone has to share a single ladies shower at the moment (not all at once, usually!), but in previous visits they have been clean and smart so hopefully the new facilities will be finished ready for the summer.
