Reviews for 3D Boat Yard
Exactly What I Expected!, 2013-06-27
Captain: , Boca Chica Key, Florida (30)

3D Boatyard is exactly what it bills itaself as--a DIY boatyard. Terry, Nilo, and Donald are friendly and did everthying we asked during our three week stay. It is a place to work, not a resort. The dust, dirt, and noise levels were unavoidable since work was progressing on everything from Landing Craft (with the ramp on front) to very nice 50-foot custom sail boats.
The bottom paint and supplies we bought from them were priced close enough to discount rates to not hurt!
We did not stay aboard, due to the nature of our work, but did use the head and shower. The staff cleans the head at least twice a day, but the tracked in dirt and dirty hands washed in the sink make it look like a service station bathroom. Once again; as expected.
My only caution is overnight security. If you want it, lock it up, well. There is a guy that claims to patrol at night, but .....
We had a locked ladder (Wordlock cable lock, and kevlar rope) removed, and laid under the boat. Maybe the thieves were startled or ran out of time, but the ladder was there. Curious.
WestMarine has a store on Stock Island within walking distance and Key West has another larger WM, but if they have your part try Key West Hardware (Los Cubanitos or Cuban Joe's) across Caroline street for much better prices.

Great Quick Haul, 2012-04-05
Captain: , Kemah, TX (612)

Very happy with prices, supplies (prices), and labor. Did loose a 6 sheive block and tackle with about 80 feet of line, but that is probably my fault. Hated to see that. Hauled and blocked the boat. No problem with 30a power, but I had to notify them before they moved the boat to the final position. Very dusty work area. Not a green work area in any form or matter, but the only yard I know of where you can do your own work. I will go back again if I need work done or have work to do. Got an excellent deal on labeled paints for bottom job and a very reasonable price to have it done. Recommend it readily for D-I-Y work

Not recommended, 2012-03-04
Captain: , Toronto Island (20)

I brought a boat in to have some repairs and was told there was 30 amp power. Got there and there was no 30 amp. Asked for help in the office and got none. Porr communications. Then when it came time to put my boat in there were 2 boats in front of it and got charged to have them moved

Great Experience, 2011-11-27
Captain: , Destin, FL (492)

It isn't often that a yard does exactly what is says it will, on time and at a price cruisers will love. I had a narrow time constraint to have the boat (46' sailboat, 6.6' draft) hauled and painted. Total bill for haul out, 1 week on the hard and relaunch was not much more than my last haul out in Annapolis. The staff was great, recommending three local vendors, all of whom did exactly what was requested, professionally and on time. Bill Peoples handled the bottom painting, fixing minor dings at no extra cost. Warren Hopkins aka the Ant Man, buffed and waxed the hull. The folks at Eyecatcher Display produced new shadowed boat lettering on the spot and installed as requested. 3D is highly recommended for haul out or inexpensive space on their wall with easy cab ride to KW proper. Less than ten minutes from the airport for crew changes or a rental car.

No frills/DIY, 2011-09-07
Captain: , St. Petersburg, FL (537)

Nice do-it-yourself yard with reasonable rates. Good access for deep-draft sailboats - the one I was on had almost 9-foot draft. Staff seems very helpful and generally laid-back. Easy to deal with. I'd give 5 stars, but there is definitely some room for improvement with cleanliness/upkeep of the facilities.

Do it yourself yard, 2011-07-30
Captain: , West Palm Beach (121)

I loved this marina because it was so affordable, we could do ALL out own work, and the staff (Jamie, Donald and Neelo) was very accomodating. We were out for 5 days and the 2 gallons of bottom paint cost more than the haul-out. (Our 37 ft boat--$861 total!) Bring extension cords--you will need them.

Lots of local fisherman and cruisers use this yard. You can walk to Dionne's quick mart--buy food and ice and get back by taxi for $6. You can get to the McDonalds in Key West for internet. You can dingy over to Safe Harbor Marina. There is also bus service to Key West a 15 minute walk from the yard.

Now the one bathroom for the entire yard is not pretty--I showered with my Tevas on--but I was not there for a resort style vacation; I was there to paint the bottom--and I was on a budget.

Great DIY Boatyard, 2011-06-27
Captain: , Key West (209)

This is a serious no frills DIY boatyard located on an old commercial fishing landing. Once catering to the commercial fishing fleet's repair needs with a marine railway, the yard has been upgraded to a modern Travelift with a 75 ton capacity.

All work is either DIY or by local subcontract marine service companies with the exception of hauling and pressure washing which is done by the yard staff.

There is a West Marine located within 1 miile and the yard allows outside supplies to be used. They have a minimal inventory of supplies available in stock, but will order anything you ask.

The staff is EXTREMELY easy to deal with, and in spite of just having a family member pass away, were very helpful. I would recommend this yard to anyone who wants to do their own work.

The only shortcomings are:
Typical old boatyard sand/gravel/patchy pavement necessitating care to keep decks clean when working, and having only ONE head/shower for the entire yard which was not very clean.

Hauled there for hurricane season, 2011-03-21
Captain: , Key West, FL (40)

Recommend this marina for a quick haul and do-it-yourself work. Several liveaboards in the yard while owners modify or restore their boats. 5 stars for friendliness & competence of personnel. 2 stars for cleanliness of marina. 2 stars for cleanliness of head. Our boat (32' cat) was on land there for 6 months, during which time many boats had bottoms sanded with no regard for where the sanding residue/dust went. Our gel coat ('93 vintage) was stained in several places from pigments that sat on the deck for long duration. Shorter timeframes - no problem. Wish they'd adopt practices of a green marina.
