This week brought news of another project we've been involved with that is now online and working. The implications of this project are far reaching and demonstrate the incredible advantages of crowd-sourcing.

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) is the United Kingdom's government agency charged with protecting their coastlines against loss of life. They are also the UK organization that provides certification for seafarers, along with producing legislation on maritime matters. In addition to many other areas of responsibility, they are in charge of the accuracy of UK charts. And that's where ActiveCaptain intersected with their needs.

MCA has survey groups looking for changes to their coastlines. But the effort is enormous. Instead, what if they could use the recreational boating community to provide feedback and reports when something was found to be different from the current nautical charts?

If you think about it, that's exactly what ActiveCaptain and it's hazard markers provide. Across the globe, boaters who are actually out there on the water, come across a hazard and report it. The boating community is wonderful at helping itself. So why not extend that reporting mechanism to the governments responsible for the charts? It's those governments who have the resources to fix the problems too.

That's exactly what's being done now.

When you make a hazard report within the territorial waters of the UK, the hazard details, comments, and any edits you make, are bundled and synchronized into the MCA's GIS systems in England. ActiveCaptain data gets inserted into MCA's databases where it is presented to analysts and officials capable of fixing the hazards documented. Obviously, like all crowd-sourced information, the data is used in consideration of each hazard - other techniques, surveys, and analysis clearly is required. But the boater-reporting happens from ActiveCaptain. From you.

This reporting process joins a similar capability we implemented for NOAA about 3 years ago. So when you report an aid to navigation missing, or come across an uncharted obstruction, your hazard updates go right into NOAA's reporting systems and end up on cartographer's desks for analysis. And while we can't demonstrate buoys that are replaced from your reports, we can show obstructions.

This type of obstruction is entered by you. A team will then evaluate it at NOAA and sometimes send out for additional surveys. The result is a change to the chart to assist every boater who passes that way in the future.
