Chartplotter Support Questions

>>> Chartplotter Support Questions >>>

It's been a busy week. At the Miami Boat Show, C-Map's booth was filled with a stream of people interested in seeing ActiveCaptain on different chartplotters. We posted some pictures from their booth on the ActiveCaptain Facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/activecaptain/

The Facebook group is a good place to ask questions with pictures and receive input from many experienced cruisers.

Here are some of the common questions we've been asked about the C-Map integration putting ActiveCaptain on millions of chartplotters:

- Is there any reference to the announcement?
Jeppesen C-Map's press release is on their website. We copied it because we can display pdf files within a browser so it's easier to see the official release. Here's the link on our website:
http://activecaptain.com/news/ActiveCaptainPRv5.pdf

- Should I update my charts now to get ActiveCaptain?
No. ActiveCaptain is set to be on the March chart update and then will be updated on each C-Map update moving forward. Watch for information in our newsletter about release specifics.

- Won't the data be old?
The ActiveCaptain data is updated at the time of the C-Map chart update release. Because it is being put on memory media, there is no dynamic update capability. All pricing data has a date of the price. Much of the other data and reviews are fine if it's just a few months old. The reality is that there is no other alternative today with most chartplotters. So instead, obtain frequent chart updates - join the Club C-Map and Club Jeppesen programs to receive updates automatically.

- Will you eventually be able to update chartplotters over the internet? Most definitely - it can be done with some Furuno chartplotters now. As more chartplotters gain better connectivity to the internet, we're ready to provide dynamic updating just like we do with all the apps and nav products already.

- Does this mean I don't need to use a tablet while underway? We think a tablet is a fantastic chartplotter backup. It can also provide another view of the path you're moving along. And since the mobile devices all support immediate updates, they'll be the place with the latest data. But having bridge restrictions, known hazards, marinas, and anchorage right on your chartplotter is quite valuable too.

- Will ActiveCaptain be available on Navionics data too for chartplotters and the Navionics app?
No. Our partner is Jeppesen/C-Map. We think they have the best charts throughout the world and strongly suggest you start using C-Map data in your chartplotter. It has to be said that Jeppesen/C-Map hasn't paid us one dollar for using ActiveCaptain. We want to align our data with the best chart providers and so we selected C-Map.

- ActiveCaptain is now everywhere. What else is there for you to do?
Plenty. We're pushing new ways to share and use the knowledge from others in the community. Electronic boat cards, our Locations app, community anchoring, Service groups, and more are things we're working on right now. The benefits of electronic boat cards are bigger than all of ActiveCaptain. You'll see...

Dylan and Dee Dee have been enjoying a lot of beach time here in George Town, Bahamas. Last week they took a trip across Stocking Island to visit the beach on the ocean side. It was a windy day and the waves were tall. But that didn't stop this brave crew from doing a little retrieving. Check out Dylan and Dee Dee's adventures on their blog:
