Newsletter #300 - January 6, 2016

>>> MMXVI >>>

Welcome to 2016! Thanks to you, this will be ActiveCaptain's biggest year yet. We'll be introducing many new items, some that have been in development for several years. We are on track to double the number of users accessing ActiveCaptain data to nearly 500,000 active captains.

For those who love ActiveCaptain just the way it is, you shouldn't notice a thing. The data will simply be in more places, with more users. That means a larger community updating, editing, and reviewing the data. The model used to collect and validate the data remains the same and you won't need to change the way you use it.

However, if you're itching to do more, there will be some great extensions and new capabilities coming. Here are the highlights:

- ActiveCaptain will be combined with eBoatCards
This will make the experience better. We know that eBoatCards is only being used by about 25% of the user base today but it is ready to explode with more use. The benefits of having an electronic boat card will start appearing this year.

- Chartplotters
We're close to having ActiveCaptain data inside many chartplotters - new ones and legacy ones. We're relying on other companies to finish development on the interface. Our part of it is done - we've been told that a March release is probable. Stay tuned.

- Europe
This spring, we'll be deploying a new server in Frankfurt, Germany to serve ActiveCaptain data in Europe. It will provide language translation for French, Italian, German, and Spanish. So if you're from the US and cruising in Italy, you'll be able to read the local Italian reviews in English. And if you're Italian boating in the US, you'll be able to read all the US reviews in Italian. This will flow through to all apps and products that use ActiveCaptain without any changes to their products.

- Locations
We will also be combining our apps. The Companion, DragQueen, and Locations will all be combined into a single app based on Locations. It'll continue to run on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.

The goal of the combined app is to provide a new type of navigation based on sharing data with those around you. If you've experienced the value of having ActiveCaptain's help when figuring out which marina to go to, or understanding how to avoid shoaling based on other's input, wait until you see what's possible with anchoring, marina services, and destination planning. And that's just the beginning.

This is going to be a fun year.

>>> We're Outta Here >>>

Our 10 weeks in the Bahamas last winter was incredible. We were finally able to go due to the fantastic internet access we maintained for our entire time away - thank you Great Harbour Cay Marina!

This winter we're going back for a planned 20+ weeks. We'll be going to the Exumas and more remote areas where we might not have good internet access.

We're leaving with a BTC SIM loaded with tethering data plans and a new data plan from T-Mobile that we're testing with them for Bahamas use. The plan costs about $50/month and provides unlimited data access in the Bahamas and US.

Yeah, we don't believe it either.

Our deal with T-Mobile is that we're going to publicly report on our experience, good or bad. We're working together with an executive there who will set up a boating plan for the US/Caribbean if we love the way it works. We'll know in a couple of weeks.

Be warned - we might be slower to respond than normal while we're in the remote areas. We intend to put in some serious beach time too.

Stop by and say hello if you see us. We've been asked to speak at the Cruiser's Regatta in George Town at the end of February. George Town will be the place where we'll be adding the new anchoring capabilities in Locations since we'll be anchored for more than a month. We'll be looking for alpha testers there.

Dylan and Dee Dee are enjoying the new year. They've made many new friends of both the two and four legged kind. There's always something to watch from the bow including a beautiful rainbow. And of course, there are lots of cuddles here on aCappella. The crew is hopeful that we will be crossing over to the Bahamas this week. Dylan and Dee Dee would like to wish you safe travels in the new year and lots of treats. You can follow the crew's adventures for 2016 on their blog:
