Locations, Locations, Locations

>>> Locations, Locations, Locations >>>

There have been 6,000 boats who have downloaded and tried the Locations apps for Windows, Macintosh, Android, and iOS. Now that Apple has approved the latest update, all versions are v1.0 and have the same capabilities. If you loaded the original iOS version, make sure to grab the new update waiting from the iTunes App Store.

We received wonderful feedback about the new map capabilities and easy user-interface. Many of you are finding your friends and watching their travels. This will add a new social dimension to your cruising.

So what's next? We thought we'd lay out the roadmap of what will be coming.

The first objective is the completion of over 20 new services categories in eBoatCards Services. A new update in eBoatCards implemented some bug fixes and added some changes based on the first 4 service categories - Boat Brokers, Surveyors, Transport-Land, and Transport-Water. Next we'll be adding boatyard services such as carpentry, engine mechanics, bottom painting, electrical, storage, electronics, and many others. Watch the newsletter for the announcement - it's close.

Once this next phase of eBoatCard Services is released we will turn our attention to the following new capabilities for the Locations app:

Display-only mode - you'll select this mode when you want to use the app without transmitting your location to the server. For example, you're anchored out and go ashore for lunch but you want to watch for friends on your iPhone. You don't want your boat's location to change to the restaurant. On start-up you'll be able to select display-only mode.

Integrated messaging - this will add an inbox to Locations that will tie together ActiveCaptain, eBoatCards, and Locations messaging into one place. We'll be working with DeLorme to integrate inReach messaging into this single inbox as well.

Group support - the ability to view the locations of the members of groups you have joined in eBoatCards. This will add a significant new social feature. It'll allow you to see the location of members of your yacht club, owners group, or of interest groups you have joined, such as Pets Onboard. It can also accommodate special groups like "Bahamas 2015-2016". All of the group displays happen with individual group permissions which have already been implemented (see the Group privacy setting for all groups you have joined/favorited).

Follow friend support - this will allow you to keep a single friend centered on the chart display as they move. We didn't realize this was needed until we were using the app ourselves. As friends jumped back from the Bahamas, we enjoyed watching their progress and kept an eye on them throughout the day. How great is it to distribute your location to multiple friends as you're making long passages? There are real, positive safety implications of multiple people watching your progress.

Sponsor messaging - given your permission, sponsor marinas and boatyards will be able to send you a private message as they see you traveling towards them. This is all optional and anyone can turn it off. We sort of think that very few people will turn it off though. You'll see.

DragKing - the text-based DragQueen app needs a chart-based implementation. And since the basic capability of this Locations app is to provide live location display, it'll work as a remote anchor alarm when you leave your boat too (using display-only mode).

If things progress as planned, these capabilities should be released this summer/fall. We want them for our own cruising and are working non-stop to get them out.

Stay tuned!

We're Different
Help You won't find banner ads in ActiveCaptain. They just create noise and take away from the display you're using.

You won't find biased, misleading information here either. The reviews are real because they come from you. Come see here how we're different.
